Paul Winchell & Jerry Mahoney

- Paul Winchell & Jerry Mahoney performing one of their classic songs - "Ice Cream". Just for the sake of clarity, it was a lip-synched performance - of which the audience was fully aware. The rest of the show was full ventriloquism as only Paul can do it. This was just a special routine to highlight a great song they recorded on record back in the 50's, and the audience loved it. The fact that it is lip-synched does not at all undermine Paul Winchell's superb ventriloquism, but rather shows an additional talent at being able to perform two different motions simultaneously. An extremely difficult task. So please, it isn't necessary to ponder or reveal the blinding revelation that it is not possible for two voices to occur simultaneously. It's for entertainment purposes and Paul was the best among them.
Paul Winchell is my grandpa :)
Although he died when i was in 3rd grade:(
he was the best grandfather in the world!
HES AMAZING YOU'RE SO LUCKYYY
Has he ever done his Tigger impression for you?
I love that Jerry Mahoney has "aged" over the decades. That's a touch which shows you what an inventive comic mind Paul Winchell had. I miss him still. I think he was probably the funniest ventriloquist in the business and a brilliant voice man to boot.
My brother, who's name is Jerry, got a Jerry Mahoney dummy for Christmas and we both loved him. We tried to do vent acts and had so much fun. This was really interactive cartoons. and a treasured part of my childhood.
This is why Paul Winchell was my hero when I was a little boy!
Not only the best, but the REAL inventor of the first working artificial heart!
Yes, I read in the Wikipedia entry for Paul Winchell that he had invented what is believed to be the prototype for the later Jarvik artificial heart, among other inventions by Winchell. So there was certainly a lot more substance to Mr. Winchell than just a man who stuck his hand up the back side of a wooden dummy.
Winchell seemed so joyous and with such a terrific smile when he performed. Yet I read, sadly, that Winchell had been very troubled in his later years, even having refused to speak to at least some of his own children. I may try to get a copy of Winchell's memoir titled "Winch," to see if I may gain some additional insight into this once beloved television host, voice actor and pioneering ventriloquist and inventor.
So funny and catchy. Paul Winchell also did the voice of Boomer in The Fox and the Hound. This song is b-b-b-beautiful! :)
And don't forget tigger from pooh bear!
Paul.Winchell was a very good ventriloquist.I always enjoyed him and his puppets.
I had the pleasure of knowing Paul and he was a great gentleman. I am sorry he is gone, what a great talent he was.
Loved watching him on TV here in NYC as a kid.
My dad recorded the Stop Look and Laugh show. Paul was such an amazing talent. No ventriloquist has or will ever top him. I first watch SLAL when I was little.
Honestly, Dan Horn is just as good as anyone even Paul when it comes to just pure ventriloquism. The one thing though that confused me at first but he had to had previously record himself as the dummy because it's literally impossible to do two voices at once unless there's some supernatural "Twilight Zone" Dummy stuff going on. But yes, Paul was an amazing talent.
Is there a way you could post them or send them to me?
For everybody who thinks paul and jerry are singing at the same time... they are not...
He mentioned to the audience beforehand that he was going to use a recording and would be lip synching... still a great reaction from the audience still. I know because I learned ventriloquism from his dvd
Paul Wichell's natural voice definitely has hints of his awesome voice of Gargamel from Smurfs.
I love how I knew Paul Winchell's voice before I'd even heard of Jerry Mahoney. He was a great voice actor, he did some of my favorite cartoon characters, and this is just a great piece of fun. Thanks!
Paul Winchell certainly was a good ventriloquist...and good voice actor, too!
I have a notion to second that emotion ! A wonderfully multi talented gent ! He could do so much ! May he rest in peace...
I love how Paul ages Jerry instead of keeping him the same aged character.
Today would have been Paul Winchell's 91st birthday if he was still alive.
Just saw him on Nanny and the Professor and had to look him up. I thought, "I *know* that voice! Who is that?" So glad I did!
I'm still amazed that he was able to have Jerry lip-sync entirely different lyrics, while he was singing different words.
Paul Winchell's daughter, April, says that her dad was a strange and tormented man, but a brilliant and creative individual.
this is great!!..and if you all close your eyes, and listen to Paul's voice (especially the beginning) you can tell he did the voice of Gargamel on the Smurfs cartoon in the 80's,as well as Dick Dastardly....good memories
Paul Winchell, beyond his mastery of the ventriloquial art form, in this routine takes us for a psychological spin, ( hear the audience gasp_watch for it, the 4th dimension of our imaginations. I believe this was his intent when he conceived the routine. To quote Nietzsche..."For what he here invented is a rarity even in the sphere of mystic incredibility and unexpected cosmic metaphors. "The world is the game Zeus plays," or, expressed more concretely, "of the fire with itself. This is the only sense in which the one is at the same time more than one. Paul creates a micro-philosophy. It reaches beyond ones self into soul of artistic invention. The one is engaged beyond the one in exchange, an interplay, voices, invisible to others that speak to all of us...Paul Winchell with his Jerry Mahoney characterization makes the inner voice visible, bright, he illuminates behind the footlights.
I remember this!! Especially the pointing!!
One of the best in the industry, Real Talk! Wits and all!
i remember as a kid in the late 50's my father getting us to say "i scream you scream, we all scream for ice cream" i always thought it was from a commercial from a brand of ice cream.
Thanks so much for taking the time to post this!
i love paul winchell like if you agree
I only remember them from the 50s & 60s. Never saw them late in life. He must have aged Jerry as he himself aged. Really cool.
Holy Underwear, Batman ! What a wonderfully heartwarming clip ! The late great Paul Winchell was a truly gifted performer ! May he rest in peace. THANK YOU so much sharing this groovy video with us ! CHEERS !! :-)
Never saw this before. Excellent manipulation. Paul was the man. And Jerry has a mustache? Paul also hosted a kids game show in the early 70's called "Runaround". Never missed it.
The best!
I love it. Too bad Metromedia erased all of the old shows. It was one of my favorites. SCATTY WADDY DOO DOO!
If anyone has an issue with the lipsync, think about Edgar Begen and Charlie McCarthy, back in the day, having the number 1 radio show! How did that work?
Metromedia was angry at Paul over ownership of the tapes and he made a gesture of good will to come to an agreement with them in order to obtain the rights back to the shows but metromedia rebuffed him and in a fit of nastyness they destroyed everything,Paul sued them in court and won but they already destroyed everything,so anything that might be remaining is in the hands of private collector's and locked away never to be seen again 😕😕
ive never understood how he could do that
they both sang at the same time!!
I remember watching this as a kid. The Flintstones at seven, the Green Hornet at seven thirty, and then Winchell and Mahoney, unless there was an Elvis movie on and then we watched that instead.
What year is this?
Did Paul come out of retirement to do this bit?
Charming to see him and Jerry (who aged, too!) again.
Must be pre-recorded. I can't see how he could do both voices at the same time.
amazing beyond amazing
how does he do it at the SAME TIME!!!!
He also provides the voice of Gargamel!
Paul Winchell, he was My Mentor.
Terry Fator & Jeff Dunham are extremely good, but Paul was the KING.
best of the best....
Paul Winchell was a terrific entertainer, and also an inventor & humanitarian. But - well, it was a little disheartening in this video to see Jerry and Paul both speaking simultaneously. That's not ventroliquism; it makes Jerry's singing seem a lot like an off-screen voice, maybe recorded earlier.
Had to be a recorder timed right because no Ventriloquist is that good, and it's literally impossible to do two voices at the same time. Either that or his dummy is alive. lol
The man behind Tigger and Gargam el
@ballerinababy444 Ballerinababy444, I used to watch your grandpa's Jerry Mahoney show all the time when I was a kid. I loved it! I was watching it when the '65 blackout hit. I got a Jerry Mahoney doll for Christmas when I was in the First Grade, and I told my teacher, Sister Fidelia, that I took Jerry Mahoney to bed with me every night. Well, she didn't know who Jerry Mahoney was, and had to ask my parents the first chance she got. I still have that doll :-)
@JVC516 This is one of the reasons that I love RUclips. (Of course, some of this gives away my age, but I am young at heart). Who needs the you-know-what we have today. (I guess I am showing my age, but I won't tell---21-plus, LOLOLOL).
man, has entertainment changed!
brilliant
I think it's cute the way Paul even aged Jerry!! heh heh
This was taken from their special on the LOGO channel.
The best.
Knuckleheadsmiff is the voic of tiger
What date was this appearance from? Does anybody know?
Is it known when this performance dates from? I'm guessing sometime in the 1980's?
Don't mean to play too much of the devil's advocate, but how in the heck is it possible for Mr. Winchell to produce two different voices at the same time?
I mean, come on.
and a few other disney characters like boomer from fox in the hound
I'm thinking this is a partial lip sync. :) But still awesome!
Never new there was an actual song , for that saying
seriously can someone explain how he did two voices at the same time? i really want to know....
I hate that you can't find any of his other music f anybody knows where I can find some please let me know
How did he and the dummy sing at the same time??
Gary Clement cause he is good
i dont know how true this is but Ive heard that it was lip synched"a historian on ventriloquism told me" but Ive also heard of some ventriloquists being able to pull of a double voice or sound
They sang together because they were lip synching
I think its hilarious that Jerry Mahoney has long hair and a mustache to go along with the times
Wasn't that Robert Jarvik?
Lyrics please!
Without Paul Winchell, there would not have been a Terry Fator. (Or should I go back to Edgar Bergen?)
2019?
Really I wish you would sing something sweet you know that song we recorded back in the 50s it was called ice cream ice cream ? Here we go I just found a crazy song not to short and not to long I think that it was written in alaska I think some girl way up and known wrote it when away from home well what's her name I don't know but ill ask her oh no its a hip it's pip so come on and let a rip oh tortonie I you got raspberry sure I'LL take baloney skit out of here oh and that's why i scream you scream we all scream for ice cream horah horah horah oh Tuesday Sunday we all scream for Sundays horah horah horah
