It's so true about color matching. If you want a BM color, you have to get BM paint. As far as Pale Oak is concerned, I have it in my living room & hallway and it's pretty. It's a true chameleon color, changing depending on the time of day and lighting.
So I watched this and was almost convinced. Turns out strands of pearl only comes in top of the line paint. $494 for a 5 gallon bucket. Pale oak. $200. Soooooo yeah....
I used strand of pearls on 2 houses over the past 20 years. Professional painter came over to estimate my family room and suggested pale oak. Then he pointed to my living room (strand of pearls) and said "or that color would be good". Then I stumbled upon this video. Ha!
I like this Strand of Pearls, however I wanted something closer to white but with a blueish tone or to reflect sky blue somehow. Its going to be throughout my home. Can you recommend something? Thanks
Pale Oak was HORRIBLE on my walls. Looked great in the 2x2' swatch, but oh gosh, it was so awfully pinkish-purple. Just putrid. I asked a lot of people and all hated it, so I bit the bullet and repainted. Expensive mistake!
I was worried about the too but Pale Oak worked so well in my house. I have all pale green and blue furniture and gold accents. I get tons of compliments.
The only problem I have with the Color Stories line available exclusively in Aura, is that Aura is currently priced at $88. a gallon. I just confirmed that with my local B. Moore store. Wow that's a lot of money considering one room requires two coats of paint.
I love Pale Oak but not for my walls, but the ceiling. Yes, we painted every ceiling in our home with Pale Oak, trimmed with White Dove and walls in slightly darker different colors. We are blessed with plenty of sunshine though. Aura is our favorite too, mainly due to the lack of odor, the coverage and ease of clean up.
I love Pale Oak! I have it all over my common areas. For some reason in my house it's perfect! All my trim is Simply White. To me it's a perfect color for all my warm tones in my home. Your furnishings, decor, lighting, and trim all change the way the color comes off. Strand of Pearls looks pretty, though.
You just saved me from a 4,000 SF mistake, lol. Thank you!! Headed over to my local Benjamin Moore store for a Strand of Pearls sample tomorrow. I appreciate your reviews!
Pale Oak would be nice to use when staging or selling a home - don't use gray; that trend is dead in the water. There are so many great neutrals to use, and I recommend using colors that have a warm undertone. Also Paint People, great advice but all this depends on the lighting people have in their homes. Thanks!
Exactly. I just finished a flip with tons of windows throughout. Pale Oak looked beautiful in the bathrooms, closets, secondary bedrooms, and laundry room. I had to finish the rest of the house with Sherwin Williams Neutral Ground because Pale Oak has a slight pink undertone in western facing rooms. It's such a cool and transformative taupe, though!
I used this color in my living room..dining/kitchen and hallway!...SIMPLY GORGEOUS!...still painting trim in same color in high gloss--fabulous!....I can't remember ever loving a color more---thanks for posting this video!!!--never would have found this color had I not viewed your video!!!!
Great video! I have been a "Pale Oak enthusiast" for a while; over the past few years, I have come to realize what you are expressing that the color trends of what is trendy have been shifting away from the grey tones. I had noticed Benjamin Moore Strand of Pearls and realized it leaned more toward the current trend. Thank you for covering it in a video.
I fell in love with Sherwin Williams Limewash, which was 3x our budget. Turns out BM Pale Oak is verrrry close and looks fantastic color matched in SW Super Paint on our ranch style house, with Tricorn Black trim. I looked at String of Pearls, but we live in Santa Barbara CA and our house is east-west facing, and SOP flashed a bit too pink for my taste.
Ok, Strand of Pearls is now on the ever growing list of “whole house” possibilities. I have a dilemma in my husband’s office. The previous owners loved Colonial Blue. I can’t stand it, but my husband likes blue so now he wants his office blue. I do have a point here, lol. I’d love to see a video on updated blue, a contemporary take on blue for walls. No dusty or Colonial blue allowed.
@@genew5758 I would go to Sherwin Williams if they weren’t so rude to home owners. The last time I went to SW I was ignored for a half hour while two contractors were warmly greeted and served. I left and went to my BM dealer where I was the one greeted warmly. I bet they can match any SW color, though! I’ll definitely check out your recommendation!
So many internet photos and videos about paint colors show rooms awash in natural light. Many of us aren't lucky enough to have that much natural light.
I always loved the look of pale oak in other people's homes. Every time I tried it in my own, it read slightly violet. This may be the colour I've been looking for. :) Thanks James!
I see the violet, too. I just painted a sample square and thought it was my imagination. I'm torn between pale oak and ballet white. Strand of pearls looks mauvish in my home.
I am having the worst time finding a color for a small to-be nursery, east facing. I’m drawn to pale oak, but thinking I’d want it warmer for the light wood pieces going in that room. But then when looking at something warmer it starts looking too yellow. 🙃 guess I’ll have to make a trip to BM for samples tomorrow lol #sendhelp
Pale Oak will be PERFECT for an east facing room!! You will get exactly what you're looking for with it. I recommend using an eggshell finish. It's more durable and will reflect light better, without looking glossy. ❤️
We have a lot of olive green accents and tons of greenery outside of our windows, and Pale oak’s pinkier tones are good in this corner case. Strand of pearls looks a bit jaundiced here
I ordered a sample of Strand of Pearls. Gorgeous! I was close to going with SW Crushed Ice, but SoP is the ticket! I've been searching for recommended pairings, does anyone have any recos? Maybe a shade darker for a bedroom and/or other colors that pair well?
Pale Oak is very complex. It looked fantastic in my prior home with oak floors and lots of natural light. Because the color is so changeable, it really depends on how it plays with natural light, artificial light, colors coming from the windows (e.g. greenery) and floor color. I loved how it changed colors throughout the day. I'm now in a low light condo with lots of green reflection from trees. I'm looking at diluted Pale Oak but still seems tricky here. Is it better to work with a less complex color because it is more fixed and predictable? The gray and green casts are hard to work with. White Opulence cheerful and counteracts the gray and green, but is kind of boring.
Talking about a lighter off white with a hint of pink / purple overtones - what about BM Collectors Item (AF-45)? It was on the 2022 color trends but not seeing a lot of info/reviews about it. Considering it for the main areas of our 1990s post-modern house. Want something with a little depth and congruent with current trends but maybe lighter than Pale Oak. On a small sample it looks good but a bit worried about the overtones though.
I absolutely love pale oak...but not in every room. It's the craziest color that looks completely different in every room! If you have a bright room with western sun, avoid pale oak, unless you appreciate slight pink undertones. A bright eastern facing room is perfect for this color! It's also nice in windowless rooms such as bathrooms. It's a really interesting taupe that can conform to a gray color scheme or a cream color scheme easily. I also recommend painting with an eggshell finish. It's more durable and helps reflect light a little better without being glossy.
I have Samplize samples of both colors. In my SW exposure room, Strand of Pearls is the clear winner. It has a spark and looks great with my multicolored art prints. Ballet White had a sad tinge in my lighting.
Thank so much James and Congratulations on the wedding! Very Happy for you. PLEASE answer this question. I have a home with pink , green , gold, and some blue undertones in fixed elements throughout my open concept main floor. Does a CSP( comprised of so many colors?) paint fair better with multiple undertones than a regular color that may contain one or two or maybe 3 ? SO WHEN YOU HAVE OPPOSITE UNDERTONES IN ONE AREA HOW DO YOU CHOOSE.? Opps that’s 2 questions. Thanks James 👍
Hi, I just joined your channel because I really appreciate and enjoy all your colour picking. I am redoing my whole house and wish to go with one basic paint color with perhaps a different color for bathrooms. Lots of Earth tones in my house dark maple, dark hardwood, and kitchen cabinets are painted with BM Natural Cream OC-14 downstairs cabinets are dark maple. I am debating between FOSSIL AF-65 and Strands of Pearl . PLEASE can you do a review on FOSSIL and matching a couple of colours. Would so much appreciate it as I am having whole house repainted in 2 weeks. I have painted boards MANY different colours and it really has come down to these two however am torn. For the bathrooms I was thinking of using either MORNING DEW or BEACH GLASS (Using Aura Bath and Spa). Just trying to lighten things up have North facing windows, overlooking lake okanagan. Currently house is painted Bleeker Beige and Alexandria Beige (in a few bedrooms). The house is11 years old and needs a repaint. Style of house is Mediteranean. Thank you so much and congratulations
Oh gosh…I’m trying to decide what to paint the walls in the majority of my new home. I’ve been looking at Balboa Mist and Pale Oak…now Strand of Pearls MIGHT be in the running. Ugh, decisions, decisions…
I did my kitchen once in balboa mist and I loved how it looked, until I glanced at my living room wall color. It made balboa mist look slightly purple to violet tones. I think you honestly cannot go wrong with Classic Gray or Paper white by Benjamin Moore

Hey brother... What do you think about painting Pale Oak in rooms that have lots of natural and artificial light, but then painting Strand of Pearls in the hallways and other low lit areas?
Hmm struggling with color for new build bath. Gray and white navy cabinets not a ton of light I already painted winds breath main areas and few bedrooms and laundry healing aloe. Not loving either of those sample in there though
An online article from MyDomaine, (one of my favorite decorating sites, said that pale oak has pink undertones. Looking at photos of it, I don’t see it. I do like the Strand of Pearls much better. I just painted a whole room in Ultra White and it looks terrible. I’m trying to find a color that will tone it down, because it looks like dingy chalk right now. None of the walls are plaster or drywall. There’s a huge stone wall and wood paneling and I painted it all.
So, i am looking for a whole house interior color for a new reno. i have light laminate floors (Lantern Glow Chestnut) and the rest of the house is a natural finished red oak floor. I originally wanted to try swiss coffee walls with white dove trim, we literally couldn't see the samples on the wall in comparison to the skim. Decided to try something darker (Balboa mist) and it seemed too dark, I was going to try pale oak but i am now considering this. What are the best trim options for this color? and if anyone has time to look up those floors - do you feel im going the wrong direction in color in general? any opinions appreciated ty.
Was considering this color to go with my copper tin ceilings and black trim in my victorian. What are your thoughts? I feel it may have too much grey in it. Other color used on the floor level is emerald greens.
Most of our home is Pale Oak with some Hale Navy. It’s great everywhere except on one wall in the kitchen. It looks pinkish/purple. Do you think the Strand of Pearls might work to correct that one wall?
Any color selection advise for me? I have natural maple cabinets in my kitchen and the finish has yellowed quite a bit. Is there a wall color that would minimize or work better with the cabinet color. The kitchen, dining area and sitting room are all open to each other.
Would Strand of Pearls make a good cabinet color? I was going to sample Pale Oak. So far I am doing a white on the kitchen walls (maybe Alabaster) and either accessible or balanced beige in halls and living areas.
Here’s my request: I want to paint my ugly apartment walls in three colors going around the single big open rooms which can be seen altogether: a chocolate brown for the “living room” (2 walls); like half the chocolate (tan-ish) on the longest wall which is my desk area going into the eating area; and then sort of half again (beige-something) on the 2 kitchen area walls that are the definite kitchen zone. Can I just choose a dark chocolate brown and have the paint guy keep adding half white to accomplish this? (The kitchen area has flooring. The living room where my desk also is has carpeting.) I love the content of this channel.
Pretty much agree on not using Pale Oak on walls but I wouldn’t go greige on walls in general. I did use Pale Oak on my kitchen cabinets and it’s great with quartz counters and Atrium White on the walls. Cabinets almost look white in sunlight and slightly gray at night.
I’ve always had good luck color matching Benjamin Moore paints at Home Depot. I’m sure there are people that had bad luck. I generally bring the paint sample to Home Depot and have them color match it. I don’t just go to them and say could you do this paint color for me from BM paints.
I love your videos and Iam having a hard time with how to do my open floor concept. I am building a house and the color choices for cabinets where not great. I choose colada in aristokrsft because it was warm. I am wondering if I made a mistake. It is a little lighter than Spanish white but just maybe a point or two, Would strand of pearls go good with cream cabinets. I may accent the wall the cabinets are on as well. If you can help I would be great full as builder won’t let me change colors.
The problem with Strand of Pearl's, at least for me, is it is a CSP color and would have to be made in Aura Paint. I just don't like matte on a ceiling. It is a nice color for walls, trim. I'll keep it in mind. Thanks for the video James
James, I was going to go with Pale Oak but I watched this video and I switched to Strands of Pearl and I just love it.. What a complex color with so many undertones.. It gives the whole house so much character. Perfect match with Simply White ceilings trims and cabinets. Very classy, thank you so much! ❤
I didn’t know about Strand of Pearls when I recently painted the common areas in my home with a 25% lighter version of Pale Oak. I usually tend to go with warmer colors and was a bit surprised at the coolness of it, but in the end I think it works better with my blue and green color scheme.

That commercial was me a few months ago. Lesson learned!
Pale Oak turns pink, sadly
Any idea why the BM website doesn’t recommend Strand of Pearls as an Exterior color?
No Csp colors are used for exteriors… too complex I think. CSP colors are only made in aura paint and aura is not ok for an external paint color.
Would Strand of Pearls make a good cabinet color? I was going to sample Pale Oak. So far I am doing a white on the kitchen walls (maybe Alabaster) and either accessible or balanced beige in halls and living areas.

I did use Pale Oak on my kitchen cabinets and it’s great with quartz counters and Atrium White on the walls. Cabinets almost look white in sunlight and slightly gray at night.
you convinced me!
Hi James, what colors do you recommend to pair with cherry wood furnitures? Wall paint and trim.
Hi James my cabinet in kitchen cabinet is gray from ikea so what color should l paint the wall in kitchen thanks
I didn’t know about Strand of Pearls when I recently painted the common areas in my home with a 25% lighter version of Pale Oak. I usually tend to go with warmer colors and was a bit surprised at the coolness of it, but in the end I think it works better with my blue and green color scheme.
This color is absolutely incredible! (Pale Oak)
