Went back and looked into it some more. And yeah you guys are real smart! The "invisible wall" is infact the effect of paralax scrolling. meaning the black room is infact 2 or 3 screens wide
Thought so! Sometimes the simplest explanations are the best. Really cool video though and I love your content. Hope you keep making stuff for a long time to come!
What's really odd is that this blank screen is in fact part of the normal stage path. The pit in the room before it is actually a branched path that leads to the rest of the level. The same thing happens in Skull Man's stage where the side room with the E-tank is part of the normal path, but the room above the ladder is actually the branching path. The same thing happens yet again in Pharaoh Man's Stage. The route to the balloon is the regular path, while the intended way is the branch. In Mega Man 4, each stage can have up to 4 branching paths, but this also includes branch entrances and exits, so one path would require 2 entries. Mega Man 5 can use a lot more.
10:26 "take this scene into the old *Analysis Machine* , we'd find that this is one *game* we can't *explain* , and I gotta admit, it's a pretty *Cool Bit* ." Shesez, you brilliant mastermind.
Jonksy Not to worry, Shesez was just using lines and references to Gamexplain at the time stamp above and at the end of the video to make things more entertaining. I'm pretty sure you've heard of Gamexplain?
One of my all-time favorite GameXplain memories is when Ash answered my question from the chat in his Mega Man 5 stream. _"@Ash - Are you hungry?"_ "No, I just had a lovely peanut butter sandwich."
As a longtime Mega Man fan, this episode was great to see :) Also, despite being one of the devs for Mega Man 2.5D, the Mecha Dragon going to the start of the stage was new to me :)
01:30 are you sure this is an invisible wall? To me this looks like you just appear being stuck because the camera is moving with Mega Man. The camera stops moving (and Mega Man is able to get to the right side) once you reach the right end of this room. This also explains the weird behavior, since the lines you've drawn pretty much seem to match the points at which the camera starts/stops following you. Might be wrong, haven't played Mega Man for ages though.
Love you man. You have always been calmed and quiet in this loud and angry world that craves for attention. I know it's hard to lose someone you love, but they're in a better place
For that black area with the false walls, could it be that you're not hitting a wall, you're hitting the center point of a long room where the camera is panning?
I don't think he's referring to a full screen pan but rather a long 2 screen wide section, like the intro to mm2s wily stage 1 and such. The Invisible disappearing wall is probably just the camera staying centered as you scroll across a 2 screen wide black screen, and it "drops" when you hit the end of the screen, letting you float over to the wall, and going back left recreates the barrier
I agree, this just gives the illusion you are stopped by something, but rather you are moving while the camera is centered, as there are no other objects around, it gives the illusion that you just stopped, also it's pretty weird for a pass-through wall cheat to suddenly not work.
You might be able to prove it if you stop halfway through the "barrier", turn around, and see if MegaMan moves immediately or gets "stuck" for just as long.
1:28 - Sorry for spoiling the mystery, but I have a surprisingly obvious explanation for this, which I'm really surprised you guys didn't realize. It's not an invisible wall. It's simply the room scrolling with you and camera just stays on Megaman until you reach the other side of the room. That's pretty much all. You simply can't see the room scrolling because the background is pitch black with no objects for reference ;p
I feel terrible for saying this, but is it possible to seperate the fan game stuff from the main series stuff? I cant speak for everyone but it doesnt appeal to me Obviously if its want you want to do nobody can stop you and ive certainly no objections to you doing it, id just prefer it if you went half and half so those of us only intrested in the non fan game stuff can stop there I feel i need to speak out because i get the sense that nobody else wants to for fear of causing offence
Alex Lee being part of the Megaman 2.5D Team, I completely understand the desire to keep canon and fan stuff seperate, and whilst I personally have no issues I also can see your side of things and I personally take no offence to your view.
I kind of agree with this comment. As a hobbyist game dev I actually enjoy watching these videos to see how the pros did stuff. Sometime I see something in these videos a pro did that I also did and it felt hacky to me, but I guess it wasn’t lol. Showing fan remakes or fan projects don’t show you how the real game was actually made and the strange things they did to make things work, especially since the fan game are made to run on modern hardware and can probably use better solutions to problems the devs of the original couldn’t use.
But would that not make it a good learning experience, to see how fans overcame technical issues that the original developers encountered? Especially if those same fans force themselves into similar hardware restrictions? (See Battle Kid as a prime example!). With programming there is no "one way" to solve a problem, and the way you solve it may be entirely different from how I solve it. Do not get me wrong, I am not saying you have to be interested in fan games and sure it would be neat if they were seperated; Just I think your reasoning -feels- a little flawed?
DDRKhat I dont think the point was ever 'no fan games' They just appeal to different people for different reasons so some people may not neccesarily want to see them Surely if theyre just seperate, nobody loses
1:38 its not a barrier, its the camera locking because the room has scroll. Once you get to the other side of the room the camera cant go further so you go beyound the center area of the camera
DUDE you completely missed the megaman 1 level artifacts that were left in megaman 2 that can be accessed by glitching through the boss levels. You can cheat your way into Wily 2 by glitching through Air Man's level.
I was happy to see that this episode was uploaded. Not because it was Mega Man, but because I saw Shesez was back. It’s great to have you back. Keep making great content. And I wish the best for your father.
With all due respect, I wish you hadn't covered the Megaman 2.5D and instead dedicated more time to the official games. Being a fan game, even a very cool and interesting one, looking behind the scenes of it doesn't hold the same value as it does with the famous and OG games themselves, at least to not to me.
How do you feel about if these episodes were clearly labelled "Fan game" or "Official" , think that would help at all? Surely there are some fan games you have played that you would love to see taken apart?
DDRKhat That’s a good point. I would just like to see them separated into their own respective videos. I already wish these Boundary Breaks were longer, but I wasn’t going to say anything about that. I know he likes to make his videos a certain length and I won’t try to make him change that. I just would have preferred that the length wasn’t cut into by an unofficial game of the series this episode was about.
As he said there wasn't enough to cover, and what difference does it really make in a series where the story isn't important if its cannon or not if the topic is looking at boundary breaks? Are fan games somehow less interesting regarding the topic of Boundary Breaks?
i hope you’re doing okay, man. you’ve been through so much recently, and i’m amazed you still find the time and motivation to make videos for us. you are such an inspiration
The "Barrier" that appears to be in the black room seems to be the thing that keeps the camera centered on Megaman. You assume that the black room is a single box, but it's most likely several screens worth of auto-scroller space.
this was an enjoyable episode but i didnt care for the megaman 2.5D parts. we're here to see the BB secrets of the official games, not really the fan games.
1:35 that's the screen scrolling, it's not an invisible barrier. Remember the background is black, so there's no detail to show you the screen is scrolling, but it is.
I don't like to complain in youtube comments about free videos, but I feel like I just watched a sponsored video for that fan game, which was one of the last things I expected to be in a video like this. I'm even surprised at how bothered I am by it. I mean, it could have at least been in the title or the description. Also as an aside, while I'm sure it wasn't easy per se, just turning a 2D (8 bit game no less) game into a 2.5 game in a shot for shot remake with ripped sprites.....I'm not sure if that's worth "singing the praises" over one might say. Level design, sprite art, game mechanics, and game concepts.....all done by Capcom and that's like 90% of the work. These fans did an amazing job no doubt, but really?? At least the shut down Chrono Trigger project was 2D -> 3D remake of a way larger 16 bit game and everything had to be hand made from the ground up with way more intricate detail.
And I would still be upset if there was time spent on the Chrono Trigger one and a plug in the Chrono Trigger game. What if you made a whole video just for various fan games?
I seriously wish I could understand this attitude, like what has you so upset? Isn't Megaman 2.5 a game? Isn't the game about Megaman? Isn't he looking at boundary breaks for it? What is so important about Capcom having been involved in making it, I mean there are plenty of things they had no involvement in making that is considered official, like Megaman 2 for the Gameboy, or the dos games, should he exclude them too?
1:42 don't quote me on this, but i may have the answer to this. it may look like megaman was blocked by invisible barriers which have an inconsistent location. but, i think that's not the case. what are you seeing here is when megaman move to the right, the camera also move to the right which makes megaman in the middle of the screen creating an illusion of a barrier in front of him. but you can't really tell the camera is moving since the background is pure black. same for the left side. but when you go all the way to the right, you can see the camera stops which means you are reaching the right side of a some sort of room. same for the left side. in conclusion, there are no barriers here involved here.
Just shows how polished these games were back then. Pretty much no unused assets or oddities; they knew exactly what they were doing the entire time. Great episode!
Heya Shesez! Been here since the early days (episode four, I think?). I got my monthly issue of Boy's Life a few days ago, and I saw they mentioned something about Breaking Boundaries in the little Table of Contents page. I was honestly so surprised to see you had actually gotten an interview by BSA. Keep up the good work, and long live the Scouts!
I needa start paying attention to titles more often, I always miss the fact that it's a collab until I find out while watching the video. XD It's cool to see someone from GameXplain show up!
Isn't that "barrier" in the black area just the screen scrolling to keep up with Mega Man? It doesn't look like much without a visible background, but it makes the most sense for something that would seem to prevent movement for a while, then stop as Mega Man approaches the edge of the area.
I'm so glad that you're back! I missed this series and look forward to it every week. I can empathize with losing two people in short amount of time. Your community supports you and will always be with you!
I remember seeing the planet in the background in previews of Mega Man 3 back in an old EGM magazine. Very cool to see it edited in to be shown in action.
Hey Shesez, nice to see a classic game. Also welcome back, and hope things are going as well for you as they can be. I'd be glad to give whatever support I can.
He actually states this in the video >>; it's still a game the only difference between this and one Capcom made is they offer authorization. how is the boundary breaking effected by it being made by fans then a big company?
@@hdofu Well, for one it's more expected to see easter eggs in fan games so it feels slightly less special. The dev room for example was cute but not really what someone comes to the video to see. Nobody clicked on this vid to see MM 2.5d content
Hmm. For those 'invisible barriers' in the black room, have you considered that's where the screen is scrolling to the left and to the right, perhaps? Are those the usual places where Mega Man 'stops' and the screen scrolls left and right in the blackness?
I feel like including the Mega Man 2.5D stuff in here was a mistake, even if you did want to promote your buddy's project. For me at least it distracts from the rest of the content and is a bit confusing. Is it possible that you could remake this video without the 2.5D stuff? Maybe it would make sense to remake this video anyhow since you most likely have better methods to boundary break the games these days.
So is this just one big advertisement for megaman 2.5 whatever? Because I don't care about that. If anything I somehow care less about it now than I did before I knew about it. The first "false wall" thing is obviously wrong anyway, MegaMan is just being held at the same X position, it's not some false wall that's in a different spot depending on direction.
It certainly was not intended to be Megaman 2.5D and I am sorry that you feel it comes across as such. As for the "False Wall", it's probably more accurately a long scrolling room (just to clarify, as, when I read your message it seemed like you meant a panning screen?)
It's looking at boundary breaks, how is it anymore of an advertisement then any boundary break videos that he does? It's a fascinating look at how the level maps are designed, whats the big deal if it's not by Capcom?
3:44 So Wily hides that fact that he's a hermaphrodite behind a whole planet? Quite the secret. XD 4:47 Wait... Is one of the Fan-Game creators actually named "Ontikarus" ? The other names seems quite normal, so I wonder...
An idea about that wall at around 1:30 - it might just be the camera scrolling. The approach the center of the screen, the camera starts moving to the right, making it look like Megaman is standing still since he's constantly standing in the middle.
Ash....biggest fan? i doubt that. There are others that are objectively bigger fans than him. RoahmMythril being one of them, when concerning the original run.
And what about GeminiLaser? He has a ton of playlists on his channel dedicated to mostly Mega Man titles and he is currently livestreaming Make A Good Mega Man Level Contest 2.
Honestly, the choice to remove the planet from Gemini Man's stage was a good idea - it just didn't make any sense for it to disappear and reappear. Great finds!
Went back and looked into it some more. And yeah you guys are real smart! The "invisible wall" is infact the effect of paralax scrolling. meaning the black room is infact 2 or 3 screens wide

no probably not because I can still move megaman around while the barrier is up. if it was a screen pan, I'd lose control of megaman for a moment
I don't think he's referring to a full screen pan but rather a long 2 screen wide section, like the intro to mm2s wily stage 1 and such. If that was the screen scrolling, wouldn't it cause him to pause in mid-air?
that would be if the screen was changing, not scrolling continually
I am pretty sure this is the correct answer
I mean just regular scrolling, not a full transition to a new area which happens when you reach the edge of the screen.

I remember seeing the planet in the background in previews of Mega Man 3 back in an old EGM magazine. Very cool to see it edited in to be shown in action.
10:17 YOU HAVE GAINED MY LOVE AND TRUST
Welcome back! I love this show
Awesome episode (as usual). It was cool having Ash make an appearance in this
Hey Shesez, nice to see a classic game. Also welcome back, and hope things are going as well for you as they can be. I'd be glad to give whatever support I can.
So glad to see you back!!!
Was there so little material from actual Mega Man games that you had to spend half the video showing off a fangame?!
Thanks for covering my favorite series!
Dude thanks for another episode and much love 👍, have a great rest of your day
Congrats for appearing in this month's Game Informer! Hope the coverage bolsters your subscriptions.
Awesome video as always!
So happy to see you back
3:44 So Wily hides that fact that he's a hermaphrodite behind a whole planet? Quite the secret. XD
4:47 Wait... Is one of the Fan-Game creators actually named "Ontikarus" ? The other names seems quite normal, so I wonder...
Probably just a pseudonym, just like how "Otaking Mikohani" is obviously not my real, legal name.
Actually, yes, it is my real name.
DDRKhat Your parents named you after Dance Dance Revolution?
Sure, why not.
man i'm tired i heard ash paulsen and immediately went "hey he has the same name as rob paulsen's son" and then i realized. he is.
Good to
Have you back. We are always here for you.
If I couldn't love your channel any more, this iced it. Shesez you're the best!
Damn youre already back at it again. Great job man. Good content.
Good to see you back !
nice episode !
i'ts good to see you back !
Hey man, saw your feature in Game Informer! Grats! That’s awesome!
Hey welcome back man! Hope all is well! It was cool to see Ash from Gamexplain here!
10:25 all of those Gamexplain references were awesome btw
An idea about that wall at around 1:30 - it might just be the camera scrolling. The approach the center of the screen, the camera starts moving to the right, making it look like Megaman is standing still since he's constantly standing in the middle.
Ash....biggest fan? i doubt that. There are others that are objectively bigger fans than him.
RoahmMythril being one of them, when concerning the original run.
I'm pretty sure former Channel Awesome member Andrew Dickman is also a much bigger fan
And what about GeminiLaser? He has a ton of playlists on his channel dedicated to mostly Mega Man titles and he is currently livestreaming Make A Good Mega Man Level Contest 2.
Yeah, Shesez is unaware. Have you seen what other Mega Man fangames have done before? The good ones show fan dedication at a whole new level!
Great video! It needed some more Mega Man VI but I enjoyed it!
Honestly, the choice to remove the planet from Gemini Man's stage was a good idea - it just didn't make any sense for it to disappear and reappear. Great finds!
You’re back! Love your content dude!
Another awesome episode and good to see you back too. :)
Thanks for doing my favorite series
Love you buddy, nice to have you back.
Schedule or not, I love when you make a video!
