I think that this build is pretty flexible, you can switch exotics around, weapons, abilities, and still do pretty good work, I personally use Final Warning and A strand grenade launcher with Foetracer
I highly recommend using ensnaring slam with maelstrom as it enables you to slam directly out of a grapple melee suspending nearby targets who have not died. this can give you alot of breathing room when grappling into more dangerous areas. this also works to generate more tangles and upkeep class energy (with aspects). If you are also diligent with catching your needle or simply use Monte Carlo (which gets 5x stacks on each needle kill) you can have a near 100% uptime on all 3 abilities while also always having a tangle and making everything severed.

Rdms are also a fun choice. Main loop is similar to arc hunter, Melee, dodge, repeat. Heavy handed/reaper + recuperation, powerful attraction, and thread of warding is great for survivability. This build works independently of the aspects, so you can go with any of them. I personally use Widows silk and whirling maelstrom, with shackle nades. Listen, I'm not saying it's viable in high end content, but Threaded Specter+Whirling Maelstrom+Bombardiers is such a fun combo I can't stop using it. Grapple in, melee, dodge out. Dodge leaves a specter, which pulls aggro, melee makes a tangle, and the bomb from the exotic boots detonates the tangle, proccing Maelstrom. It also often pop the specter, sending out the threadlings. I call it my "cool guy shit" build because I feel like I'm doing cool guy shit while using it.
While soloing Ghosts of the Deep this set up with the specter aspect was HUGE for the final boss. Used liars for the first boss because of proximity but with how big that final space is, having tangles everywhere, a distracting dodge and woven mail off grapples saved the run many times
One thing to note is foetracer's ability creates a strand tangle on its own separate cooldown from your base cooldown from the strand subclass. So this means you could absolutely have 2 whirling maelstroms up at once if you wanna have fun
Bear in mind that there is an option to play this build extremely passively that works really well in gm’s. You set up behind cover, make a grapple point behind cover, get woven mail, then refresh woven mail every 10 seconds. You then plink behind cover with something like wish ender while letting whirling maelstrom do a lot of work for you. Elemental charge on the boots pairs really well with this as you’re able to get armor charge for surge mods just by breaking tangles which you can do from far away. I ran this setup for the europa gm and only died in the boss room to falling over the edge 😂

The seasonal artifact makes this build SO potent. Elemental Munitions procs from tangle kills, including Whirling Maelstrom, so this build generates ammo hilariously fast (and ammo scouts on the helmet can give your team drops from it too); and Frenzied Stacks increases your tangle damage by 30% additive for every armor charge you have on, although Whirling Maelstrom specifically is a little less than that (20/31/42/53/64/75% for 1-6 stacks; typically I run around with one chest mod to cap out at four, that's plenty). Throw in Refreshing Pickups to get ability energy back and Elemental Fury to increase Maelstrom's damage on stunned champions and it gets even crazier. I was going to do Assassin's Cowl with this setup for contest Crota, but unfortunately the mods relevant to it were disabled for the race, so I ended up just doing Sunbracers instead. Cowl adds a different form of safety compared to Cyrtarachne, so try both and see what fits.
You can also set a grapple point behind cover and use it to keep refreshing your woven mail safely in high end content, you don’t exclusively need to use the ability to go in offensively
I highly recommend assassins cowl, with all the grappling it’s a great way to get your health back, and you generally have enough time to think if you’re safe enough to grab your melee attack on its way back or if you need to stay invis and regroup
For lower and medium content this is great, otherwise in like a GM or high level stuff is where it fell off for me. Finishers to go invis is still very nice but getting those melee kills in high level content might get you in more sticky situations than what it’s worth
@dylanmelvin3126 I disagree, the thrown rope dart hits harder than you might expect. You gotta be a little more specific about your targets but in a large enough group you're almost guaranteed a kill as it bounces around. Just don't catch it as it comes back, it breaks invis
@@iponce2 yeah I agree it can be done, I’ve used it in GMs to test before but in my case I like to play a little more aggressive and like you said being selective with targets or doing pre damage to get the secured melee just didn’t fit my style. They did buff the threaded spike and yeah it’s way better and will get you some kills with a group of red bars. No hate on using it just wasn’t fitting for me at higher level. I like using the new helmet like in this vid for woven mail to make me a little more tanky
@@dylanmelvin3126 valid points. I don't actually use it in those activities either, I still rock two shackle nades and sixth coyote with ensnaring slam. Even with the suspend nerfs, locking things in place while you ready a leviathan's shot is nice and easy damage. Cowl is better for soloing stuff imo, especially for me cause I don't usually mind taking my time.
Foetracer is better, its so easy to get woven mail from the insane amount of orbs so the cytargshehdh facade isnt needed on the other hand you can have high strand damage on your weapons from surge and grenade kickstart on at the same time which is way more valuable, also instead of going the grapple or suspend route i switched it up and went with threading grenades and fragrants and also threaded specter aspect which actually helps you get out of a bad situation since the enemies prioritize shooting your afterimage instead of you (plus it creates a threadling) and that build has been soo insanely fun, i slept on the beyblade at first because it looked weak compared to warlock and titans aspects but this is great for hunters and also do not forget the artifact mod that gives heavy and special for elemental pickup kills and the whole team will be drowning in ammo. Just such a great build overall
Radiant dance machines can make this build just as strong. Woven mail uptime won't be an issue with the fragment, especially when you can make orbs,.so easily with the amount of melees you can throw out. And if you prefer suspend over grapple. Change the grenade and have the best of both worlds. Suspend spam, strong tangles, and plenty of melee charges. Very fun build
I believe you said on stream that you might not be doing build videos anymore because they don't get as much traction but they are still very much appreciated!
I was running a similar build in the GM with Lucky pants instead of cyrtarachne. I was mostly just trying to test out warden's law in a GM, and I really enjoyed it. I was using suspend grenade+ thread of ascent.
I went Threaded Specter after playing around a lot. The buff is substantial, like most enemies immediately near you (and for a pretty good distance) start targeting the specter and the amount of health it has lets it stay up for a long time while you do whatever you need to do. The fact that maelstrom procs both Thread of Generation AND Fury is insane. Widows Silk is a great way to use the grapple as a way to engage enemies but as long as you make sure to open up with your melee first to sever targets to get that first tangle going, you don't really need it as you'll have constant grenade and melee energy. I actually swapped for Marksman dodge as it's 10 seconds shorter than Gamblers and with the amount of melee energy we're getting with everything going on I felt I really didn't need Gamblers to get it up.
I run pretty much the same setup but with shackle instead of grapple for high end content. The whirling maelstrom allows you to kill enemies outside of LoS that would otherwise be death sentences (such as the infinite spawning snipers in the Seraph Bunker Moon battleground). It procs itself if throwing correctly during your tangle cooldown, so you just pop your head out from time to time and repop your whirling maelstrom. Maelstrom's so effective that, if I'm on another strand build on Warlock or Titan and I see a hunter using it, I let them take or shoot my tangles.
I actually think foetracer is exceptional with this build because the tangles created from killing a powerful combatant with a weapon matching your subclass can override the tangle cooldown
I love the new aspect! I run it with spectre on my infinite melee Radiant Dance Machine build and it's soooo good. With recent buffs and newer mod setups, it's so good.
i feel like you should go with only either transmutation or fury fragment. Reason for this is with fury you use the melee to sever them which makes tangle when they die, that tangle will spin around and do damage alot of times giving you your melee back, plus you can catch the melee to get a lot of energy back, meaning you can always make a tangle without transmutation and the same goes the other way around, you pick up and orb and your weapons generate tangles, grapple melee can proc heavy handed as well as rope dart can proc it, and give you the orb giving you essentially 3 abilities that can generate orbs making the uptime super high. Personally i prefer the Fury fragment.
My preference for this aspect is to make it a lot more supplemental to another playstyle, in this case RDMs and melee spam, using the grenade charges to be able to spam the tessellation super-shot on bigger targets, you get basically constant woven mail with warding, and spamming dodge means you are constantly picking up orbs all around you, everything is severed if it doesn't die to the melee, and tangles are spawning off cooldown because everything is always affected by a strand debuff, so you can let the maelstroms rip constantly to clear stuff out.
An insanely high risk, high reward variant of this: run a 1-2 punch shotgun and assassins cowl. The change to how grapple melee activates means that you can fairly consistently get off a 1-2 punch buffed grapple melee, which is A LOT of damage, and can one hit orange bars even in high level stuff. Of course, if you miss or mess up, you are instantly dead. But it is wildly fun when it works. Grapple melee will make you invis and give health, so it’s decently chainable. If you do this, use a crafted lightweight with enhanced 1-2 punch so you don’t have to land as many pellets, and the high handling helps with whipping out the shotgun after the grapple to make landing the blast easier
The spectacular hunterman build, as for strand I wish we had strand/stasis energy weapons in the energy slot. There’s the new exotic but it’s 100$ and takes up the exotic slot like throw a couple fusion rifles or shotguns for strand/stasis in the energy slot for more build chaos
Cyrtarachne giving guaranteed woven Mail is just so great to me. And I believe ppl underestimate how good grapple can be. It doesn’t HAVE to be offensive, especially when using facade. You can just use it for movement or for woven mail. Note that double special has been needed i think I’ll adjust my Vicente strand build, swapping out ensnaring slam for the new aspect and use quicksilver.
I learned that most of the final 5 artifact perks bug out armor charge on strand subclasses. sometimes my surges don't have timers, other I just can't get armor charge, meaning I can't pickup orbs when my super is full... that last one has killed me a couple times since recuperation could not proc.
It's probably not as good as the exotic you use, but I like to use assassin's cowl with a build like this, it makes it a bit less risky to do grapple melees, since those make you invisible and heal you if you get a kill. Plus, strand hunter melee is pretty solid now
I like to run Sixth Coyote with Threaded Specter and Whirling Maelstrom myself. I'm also an omega level hunter I guess cause I go for triple 100s (Mob, Res, and Dis) for pretty much every build I make. Grenade doesnt really matter but I like the mobility offered from Grapple. As far as fragments I run the usual combination of Warding and Generation and then slap on Binding (I think, the one where super final blows suspends targets) or Ascent, and Transmutation or Evolution. I started with Evolution and Threadling grenade because I wanted the clone to deal more damage but I shifted away from this and started to use it more defensively since it got buffed to take a better beating from ranged attacks. Some people may like that though so I figured I'd mention it. Of course if this setup doesnt work for you with basically minimal changes you can instead run Widow's Silk and Suspend Slam over Specter and Maelstrom and run Suspending grenade for the usual "infinite" Suspend build. Swap Transmutation/Evolution for Mind for more slams. Far as mods go its kinda up to you. Kickstart means more Grapples or Suspends, Surge(s) mean more Quicksilver DPS (because come on, are you REALLY running something else?), stat mods are never bad (imo). Very flexible subclass and I have grown to like it more and more.
Yiu can get monstrous ad clear with this and actually really good boss dps as its constant dps ontop of your weapons and you could use necrotic grips or witherhoard for extra passive dps
really love whirling maelstrom and its very flavorful to have a moving grapple point for hunter, but a part of me feels like this is a better summon than anything the literal summoner class has. and that makes me sad
Strand hunter can summon decoys to take enemy aggro and summon pretty decent ally with whirling maelstrom. Strand warlock is stuck summoning threadlings which die because one red bar was in their way...
I could be wrong but doesn't propagation actually work with grapple melee? I usually use that and Im pretty sure grapple melee gives me unraveling rounds
threaded spectre is nice to grapple in, slap the beefier enemy in the face, dodge out and leave the clone. Uptimes are still pretty solid even with 1 less grenade charge
I just use mothkeepers coz strand already gives you woven mail if you add an orb making mod to your helmet. Mothkeepers can double as grenade + backup health too. Such a fun time this build
I've been loving the build all season - and if there's any way you can get off of Quicksilver Storm, this build is FAN-TASTIC with Rufus' Fury and the new preorder exotic fusion, Tessellation. As Datto says, you will almost never not have your grapple up - and with a Rufus's Fury with demolition and two grenade charges via Widow's Silk, that means A LOT of opportunities to load the massive damage shot into Tessellation and still always have a grapple ready. I'll load one every time I fire one and then stow it, and I'm back to full grapples almost immedaitely - and then I've always got this super high damage shot ready to go, along with my heavy. Oh, and did I mention that this also allows for a strand weapon in all slots, making those strand surge mods do triple duty? AND we have barrier auto rifle and unstoppable fusion this season, making this setup great for endgame content as well? Again, I know Quicksilver Storm is amazing, and works great with this build, but give Rufus/Tessellation a try, it's outstanding.
Mothkeeper's Wraps is probably a better exotic choice. Possibility of utilizing both Woven Mail and Void Overshields, blinding grenades that seek targets AND do good damage, I just think its better.
I personally run Thread of Warding to ensure my Woven Mail uptime is 100% (having melee kills made orbs means I essentially proc when I start the grapple and refresh when I finish), Continuity to keep the Unravel train chugging along to always have a source of Tangles, and Generation to have near 100% Grapple uptime. For the last one I switch between Propagation to get Unraveling Rounds for barrier champions, or Ascent for free reloads if there are no barrier champions. Transmutation is pointless as every enemy around you should be Unraveled or Severed at all times, so they will already be turning into Tangles if they can. Fury is also fairly unnecessary if you are using Gambler's Dodge but a good pick otherwise, though Marksman's Dodge is made fairly obsolete by Ascent.
I always wanted a build like this since the first moment Strand dropped, but I was dissapointed the way Bungie handled Grapple and I was forced to use the Six Coyote suspend build, which was a lot of fun don't get me wrong, but now with all the cooldown buffs to Grapple from past seasons and the amazing new aspect, I really live my slinging Hunter fantasies to a full. I wish the exotic helmet looked less uglier tho. Now I only need Navigator to complete my strand fun.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Whirling Maelstrom is bugged and wont allow you to get armor charges. I tried out Datto's build for myself with strand surge mods and the surges were not activating, did some quick experimenting and swapped to another aspect and they worked just fine. So if you're planning on using surges for this build they will not work.
You know, I still think Assassin's Cowl is the best Hunter exotic, it can get you out of some really tough situations easily, especially that it works with the Grapple melee and you can add Specter to that for extra defense (helped me a lot in Master lost sectors)
I've been running this with Foetracer and Threaded Specter, Quicksilver Storm, a sniper, and the new Strand rocket launcher. Been working great and it's a lot of fun. I just hate grapple, and I'm producing so many orbs that the idea of using grapple and an Exotic just to have "Woven Mail on demand," when I borderline have that already with a free 25% damage-buff, is dumb.
Try Assassin's Cowl instead. It procs off of grapple melee, and also your knife now properly tracks/returns to you while you are invisible. It gives you the survivability you need. In Higher level content, obvs this is a bit more difficult. But still doable (especially with a banner of war titan that's common right now, buffing your thrown spike)
It’s a little sad but I feel that assassins cowl is just a better grapple strand exotic for all high end content. It’s hard to find a reason to use anything else over it, for solo or group content. Pair that with a god rolled adept immortal with demolitionist, it’s just crazy the damage and survivability
Honest elitist Datto question, do you have a solid reason to actually use Cyrtarachne on this build? (Or in any pve in general?) With thread of warding, you can do what it does but easier, in any level of content given how plentiful orbs are. Whereas you can use any other exotic that gives you actual benefits like dance machines, star eaters, even lucky pants. I assume you see the great synergy with all of those options (lucky pants just being lucky pants tho)
I actually made this build last week and I was having a blast using it. I didnt use that exotic helmet though cause I feel like its a waste of an exotic slot, so I was using Frostees and tbh frostees to me are very mid. Anyone have any better exotic armor suggestions?
Foetracer for strand weapon damage and more tangles Wormhusk for health Assassins cowl for some skillful invis on melee and finishers (grapple will get you killed in gms) Aeons for support Lucky pants for handcannon shenanigans Stareaters for better super Radiant dance machines for reload / melee spam
Rufus with demo and paracausal let's you equip the teselation for all strand weapons ps I think hunter has a bug that dosnt let you get armor charge with too many mods equipped
I love the aspect. But I also think it needs a bit of a buff to its movement speed while attacking and it needs to be looked at by the devs because it can be very buggy. Lots of instances of it getting stuck in objects or just outright not moving (usually from teammates tangles) the pvp damage is also incredibly laughable at 5 per tick and it can also be destroyed in one shot by most weapons by opposing guardians.

For gms I’ve had plenty of success swapping to Foetracer to buff QS and shackle for champ help. Tip: QS gl portion 1 shots barrier shields!
Loony Toons Tasmanian devil
Love it when Datto uploads at the same time a Genshin Impact video also goes up, so we know which one to *always* watch.
Datto.
W
I actually think foetracer is exceptional with this build because the tangles created from killing a powerful combatant with a weapon matching your subclass can override the tangle cooldown
With its new buff, wouldn't foe tracer generate additional tangles (bypassing tangle cooldown for one additional tangle) for more twirly destruction?
Cyrtrachne makes my life better
I love the new aspect! I run it with spectre on my infinite melee Radiant Dance Machine build and it's soooo good. With recent buffs and newer mod setups, it's so good.
How are you grappling to things from so far away? I swear mine are half as long and never connect to tangles from that far away
i feel like you should go with only either transmutation or fury fragment.
There’s a few other exotics you can use in this build if you’re willing to keep the thread of warding like assassins cowl
Plus, strand hunter melee is pretty solid now
Been using this build since the beginning of the season and it slaps
I finally beat the Lightfall Campaign with my Hunter so I could unlock Strand and my goodness is it so much fun to play with
I like to run Sixth Coyote with Threaded Specter and Whirling Maelstrom myself.
This build goes crazy with RDMs ; infinite melees make a lot of tangles!
Yiu can get monstrous ad clear with this and actually really good boss dps as its constant dps ontop of your weapons and you could use necrotic grips or witherhoard for extra passive dps
You can't use Necrotic grips and this aspect
@Naturelance4 yeah my bad osteo striga I mean
really love whirling maelstrom and its very flavorful to have a moving grapple point for hunter, but a part of me feels like this is a better summon than anything the literal summoner class has. and that makes me sad
Strand hunter can summon decoys to take enemy aggro and summon pretty decent ally with whirling maelstrom. Strand warlock is stuck summoning threadlings which die because one red bar was in their way...
Shoutout to Plunderthatbooty’s Sixth Coyote Strand Hunter build, haven’t stopped using it since it’s so fun
The fact Datto said "Go with the flow" when describing a Strand Build proves Bungie succeeded at making a lore accurate subclass.
I also have been using rufus with demo on this build and can also say its nutty. Havent tried tesselation though yet because I haven’t preordered
Mothkeeper's Wraps is probably a better exotic choice. Possibility of utilizing both Woven Mail and Void Overshields, blinding grenades that seek targets AND do good damage, I just think its better.
Nice build video datto
i think this is probably my favorite aspect in the game, up there with gunpowder gamble
Fury is also fairly unnecessary if you are using Gambler's Dodge but a good pick otherwise, though Marksman's Dodge is made fairly obsolete by Ascent.
bombadiers and threaded spectre is amazing
I always wanted a build like this since the first moment Strand dropped, but I was dissapointed the way Bungie handled Grapple and I was forced to use the Six Coyote suspend build, which was a lot of fun don't get me wrong, but now with all the cooldown buffs to Grapple from past seasons and the amazing new aspect, I really live my slinging Hunter fantasies to a full. I wish the exotic helmet looked less uglier tho. Now I only need Navigator to complete my strand fun.
Who is this and what did you do you our beloved Datto?
This has been my main setup for the entire season.
Can somebody please tell me what cloak he’s using and how to get it I can’t find it anywhere
I still haven't seen one content creator use the Tasmanian Devi tornado sfx when showing the maelstrom whirlwind. This concerns me.
new datto vid LETSGOOO
Try this set up. But use mothkeeper wraps. The damage of the maelstrom and moths is pretty good in gms
FIRST PERSON EVER TO PRONOUNCE CYRTARACHNE'S FACADE CORRECTLY
like deadass ive never heard anyone pronounce it correctly until now lmao
IMPORTANT NOTE: Whirling Maelstrom is bugged and wont allow you to get armor charges. I tried out Datto's build for myself with strand surge mods and the surges were not activating, did some quick experimenting and swapped to another aspect and they worked just fine. So if you're planning on using surges for this build they will not work.
I've played so little of my hunter that I've still gotta buy the rest of the strand fragments lmao
You dont need the helmet tbh. Build into making orbs and you can free up an extotic.
Holy. Give us the transmat screenshot please.
You know, I still think Assassin's Cowl is the best Hunter exotic, it can get you out of some really tough situations easily, especially that it works with the Grapple melee and you can add Specter to that for extra defense (helped me a lot in Master lost sectors)
Remember when Bungie said they wanted abilities that compliment gunplay rather than overtake it? I remember.
I’m at a wedding but watching this anyway
Man you really luv that lost sector 😂
Harder than some of these legend and master lost sectors 😂
I was trying to figure out how these strand hunters (and titans) were completely outclassing me on add clear as a Warlock main.
ive been using this with foetracer, threaded specter, and threadling grenades
My homie has been running this with assassins cowl with great success
Need to try this
Happy birthday mr fruit
been using mothwraps with maelstrom, and the decoy for seasonal and it feels super fun its my “summoner build” lmao
Babe, new datto vid dropped
Datto is now a hunter main xD
Fun fact : Gathering Storm can attach to said Mobile Tangle........have fun lol
Amazing title datto
Babe, rasenshuriken swings dropped
Great Datto made a video… I’ll wait for the nurf next update….
It’s a little sad but I feel that assassins cowl is just a better grapple strand exotic for all high end content. It’s hard to find a reason to use anything else over it, for solo or group content. Pair that with a god rolled adept immortal with demolitionist, it’s just crazy the damage and survivability
No link to the mobalytics build? Feels bad lol
This is gonna be a fun one
I actually made this build last week and I was having a blast using it. I didnt use that exotic helmet though cause I feel like its a waste of an exotic slot, so I was using Frostees and tbh frostees to me are very mid. Anyone have any better exotic armor suggestions?
Foetracer for strand weapon damage and more tangles
Wormhusk for health
Assassins cowl for some skillful invis on melee and finishers (grapple will get you killed in gms)
Aeons for support
Lucky pants for handcannon shenanigans
Stareaters for better super
Radiant dance machines for reload / melee spam
Foetracer makes tangles on kills while buff active and using weapons with the same element as subclass*
5 damage is plenty in PVP with the initial tangle damage and the flinch and you firing your gun at them. It'd be oppressive if it were super good.
If you dont wanna grapple, I think foetracer + shackle nade is p fun
Hunter desperately needs a good strand exotic armor
Id love gauntlets that give grapple melees chain reaction
Another good strand exotic armor?
@@life-destiny1196 the strand helm is literally outclassed by sixth coyote which is a neutral exotic that should literally never be a thing.
