The Eeger Beaver Tree Service came today and removed a Cryptomeria from my back yard. It was a beautiful tree that at first had the profile of a giant teddy bear. Forces of the Pacific storms had bent the trunk so that it was growing toward my home and it was shading my whole back yard. I have hope that a new tree will develop from the trunk and that with care and pruning it can be revived and not allowed to become a problem again.
Cryptomeria, also known as Japanese cedar or sugi. Cryptomeria is a monotypic genus of conifer in the cypress family, Cupressaceae, and includes only one species, Cryptomeria japonica12.
Appearance: Cryptomeria is a large evergreen tree that can grow up to 70 meters (230 feet) tall with a trunk diameter of up to 4 meters (13 feet). It has red-brown bark that peels in vertical strips and needle-like leaves arranged spirally1.
Cones: The seed cones are globular, about 1-2 cm in diameter, with 20-40 scales1.
Habitat: Native to Japan and China, it thrives in rich, moist, well-drained, acidic soils but is adaptable to other soil types. It prefers dappled sunlight, full sun, or partial shade2.
Uses: The wood is highly valued for construction and various other uses. It’s also popular as an ornamental tree due to its graceful appearance2.
The name “Cryptomeria” comes from the Greek words “krypto” (to hide) and “meris” (part), referring to the concealed position of its reproductive organs2
