Knowledge is key, combined with experience is priceless.
Pruning makes a huge difference between a shrub or tree being a pleasant addition as opposed to a looming unkempt nightmare in a landscape. Especially in moderate climates.

I always learn so much from you, and stuff I didn't learn while working at a tree company back in the day, that's helping me climb and do work here on the family farm
    Real practical, common sense stuff

Very nice. One of my plans for business is to have a nice shop where we park equipment, ideally the employees will get paid to clean the equipment, the shop, and to hang out and watch August hunicke videos in the background. Everyone can learn something. Thanks for being such a tree nerd

Enjoyed the video. Appreciate your explanation of your pruning philosophy. All made sense to me. I do very little pruning as I'm not knowledgeable enough....not my area of expertise. I like climbing, limbing, topping, chunking, etc. Wish I had your ability to envision the pruning project prior to the work, plan it out and make it happen. Thanks for sharing and appreciate your camera work. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Great job the tree looks lovely! Two things to contribute - 1, I’m a fan of grundens deck boss boots for soft feet on delicate barks, and 2, you should give the Stihl PP101 (made by ARS) a try! I got it on a recommend from a colleague (bcma), and I loved it so much I went out and bought a second one. Best extension pole pruner ever - precision. I use it more than just about anything else in my pruning arsenal. Happy pruning! 🌳

With pruning I tend to be conservative and explane to the customer what can and can't be done. Which two weeks a go let to me removing a tree and they will plant a new one. It was "mangeled" in the past and there was no way I could prune it so the customer would be satisfied with the end result. I explained them from a to z how you would normally prune such a tree species and showed them why that wasn't possible anymore. And altough they were sad because of the end effect that it wasn't going to live up to their expectations, they were very happy about how I explaned it to them. Which let to me removing the tree and in the future pruning the new tree. "I don't want your money, I want your bussiness".

A ladder was spotted! When I discuss with a customer what I can and cannot do to various tree species I also remind them that the end result is my Business card for all the street to see and that how I get more work in the area.
They will will remember the bits you leave but forget what you take away so a tidy site is best as you drive away. Cheers

Hi August from Sydney Australia. Thanks for another video. I enjoyed it a lot even if it isn't your favourite work. I wonder if people are still delaying the big tree work that you usually prefer, pushing you to do the smaller jobs?
I greatly appreciate the explanation of the one third rule of pruning. I have personally butchered many trees due to ignorance and agree complete decapitation not only upsets the tree, it also makes it look utterly hideous. I wish I learnt this sooner. With a smaller garden, sometimes we have to shape things just to keep the trees from crowding out all the light - or each other. Tree choice is where i try to start now I have a better understanding, but most of ours were here before us and we have strict rules about what were allowed to remove in sydney. If somethng dies, i am always a bit thrilled i can plant something better!
Arent the silky saws great? I have a good collection now and prefer them to my small chainsaw because I am not agile like you!
    Have a great day!

I will rarely top ornamental trees, but if the customer wants to keep the tree and removal is the only other option, I'll do it. I almost never top a "real" tree unless it's got a dying top and the customer doesn't want removal.

August, I can't believe you would be so reckless. No hardhat, no safety glasses, no road signs, no saddle, not 100 times tied in while holding a hand saw. No 10 ways of communication. Just willy nilly throwing limbs out of the tree.
Haha. Great job homie and great explanation.

my dear old mum had what she called a snowball tree in her garden it was on the boundary next door hated it as it at the end of flowering make such a white carpet of flowers on the ground but it was nice any way my dad said give me a hand to prune this tree which ment you cut it i will clean up so having picked the worse time of day to do it the sun was in my eyes i couldn't see a thing so i am up a ladder and dads shouting instructions down a bit more chop this chop that well at the end we had given this tree such a short back and sides its was definitely pruned my mum was less than impressed we had taken far too much out of the tree , well the new growth that followed and the blossom was more than ever before so both dad and i were forgiven ps i am no gardener even now

Tree Removals are straight forward. I hate the ambiguity in pruning. You never know if the customer is completely satisfied, or if you matched their artistic vision. I ask for their opinions, probably too much.

In tree work the customer is almost never right. Because they don’t know anything about trees. 99% of the time I can get my customers on board with my vision for their tree. Because I can explain the artistry and the biology of proper tree work. If they insist on hack job stuff, I walk away.

    • @AugustHunicke
      @AugustHunicke  3 месяца назад

Was this hack pruning in your opinion?
I’m guessing prolly not. But yeah, what you are describing is daily routine educating the homeowner type stuff that all legit tree workers do.
