A bit of context for that drop goal: The Waratahs needed tries in order to get a bonus point win. Dunning's team had a penalty advantage at the 68th minute, and the Chiefs were already down one player to the sin bin. He made the drop goal attempt, thinking that it'd fail, so they can then proceed to kick for the line out. But it sailed straight through the posts, against all expectations. The Waratahs did win the game, but failed to advance to the play-offs.
By his reaction it looked more like he wasn’t aware of the situation and was wondering why none of his team mates were jumping fo joy and patting him on the back😂😂
"Was there anything he couldn't do?" Scrummage! Although in fairness none of the Australian props of that era could. Sheridan & Vickery probably still feature in those Aussie props nightmares
I watched him, my boy watched him, I met him..he was like the NZ props of today in a country that thinks that Angus Bell is a great prop..Matt Dunning was an underappreciated great..what this video doesn't show is that he was a great scrummager as well.. remember when Australian props had to do that..? Good tribute to a great era of Aus Rugby..😁
He'd struggle to prop prem grade rugby in nz. Who are you kidding. He's nothing like a kiwi prop ever. Nz props are on another dimension compared to aussie props.
@@bellrugby03 don't agree. There's more to props than scrumming like there's more to 1st fives than a boot. NZ sets the pace. Everyone else follows. Then catch up. Then we start again.
@@nathanbellamy3308 so what's your views on young Angus Bell? I think the Waratahs have the wrong idea of where to find young props..I think they have a massive responsibility in regard to the young fellas safety..in Australia we seem to pick props who can back up and score tries, as an old prop, winning tighthead scrums and lineouts is scoring a meat pie..😁
@@christiantasidaily That's not the point. It's more that because he had the frame to play prop, he NEEDED the extra bulk (particularly as he didn't have the best scrum technique). In league, he would still probably play prop but they would focus on getting him ready for the crash ball a lot more often. He could obviously read the game well enough.
@@christiantasidaily Yeah, but it's a different kind of fitness because the positional needs are different. There's no need for 20st props in uncontested scrums, so he would be leaner as a crash ball league prop.
@@RatzaChewy bruh. You still don’t get what my point was initially. He was basically saying union has no fitness - we are arguing the exact same thing 🤣
Was there anything he could not do? Well, he could not walk away from the buffet table for a start. He was a bit of a cult hero, but struggled a lot in scrummaging and was hardly the best tackler. I watched just about all the games he played for the Waratahs and at times he was good, but not as often as I hoped.
It's doable. When I was playing rugby I was 275 lbs and ran 40m in 5.5 seconds. My 50m time was about 7.3. Anything beyond that, I needed a crash cart, oxygen tank and a jug of beer. 🤣
Because they needed a bonus point win to get into the finals, needed 2 more tries to get it,they had just got the advantage, he kicked it thinking it would miss and they would just get the penalty and probably would have kicked for touch closer to try line or scrum, because he got it in, the penalty was waved.
They needed a bonus point so needed to score tries. The droppy, while a sweet nudge, wasn’t what they needed as they had a penalty advantage and could use the penalty to get closer to the line.
Dunning was great in the loose but utterly crap in the tight stuff. He urgently needed special training for scrummaging but no matter he's retired now.
Dominique Wilkins is the human highlight reel. This guy is just a lardass that bursts into a short sprint every now and then and can catch a large egg shaped ball
Gotta go that far back for some highlighys hey rugby australia? Heres a tip, stop relying on your "schoolboy prodigies" to get the job done and reward actual talent

Simplest explanation ever. Now, if you can help me put into words, why I'm breaking up with my gf. I'm married. That's why
There is plenty of other options to do when advantage is on. 😂
A back trapped in a props body lol. Legend.
Hey, sometimes we just EAT a back or two if they don't feed us before a game ;)
@@auricstorm Ah I see lol. It appears he at least ate a fly half and a winger at some point :p.
gotta love it when the props go off intercept the ball he almost got there could see the determination on his face bloody top stuff mate
Looked like he was chasing an ice cream truck, pretty impressive though
No more beautiful a sight than seeing a prop in the clear, in full flow - just a mesmerising spectacle!
When Australian Rugby had Big Personality! Bloke is a legend!
The two intercepts are when being lazy and having a rest out the back makes you look like a genius !
0:11 the dictionary definition of "determined face"! He really was giving it everything bless him!
When you play prop, there are three teams and you support like this:
Them - least
Us - most
Props - Always
Big running props always the best and doing drop goals as well is a huge bonus for any team. Matt Dunning you fucken LEGEND
Just remember: God created beer to prevent props from taking over the world.
Matt Dunning - class and character.
