Freeze frame at 2:21 -- Frans Steyn's kick is from about 2-3m beyond halfway and 6m in from the sideline; halfway is 50m and rugby field is 70m wide, hence if we use Pythagoras' equation we get SQRT((50+3)^2+(70/2-6)^2) = 60.4 meters, not the 66m that the commentators are claiming. [EDIT] In case anybody's interested, here's the formula for calculating the distance of a rugby kick: SQRT((50+A)^2+(35-B)^2) where A = the number of meters beyond halfway (subtract A if it's A meters inside the opposition's half) B = the number of meters in from the sideline. As a guide, the two dotted lines are 5m and 15m in, and the center of the field directly in front of the goalposts is 35m in. So you just plug the numbers A and B in, and type the equation into your web browser, and Mr Google (or Ms Bing) will give you the answer.
A "Longest Penalties" video and you don't include the longest international kick of them all by Paul Thorburn. It's legendary, with an old, wet, heavy, leather ball as well.
leather balls are lighter than todays balls, look it up. Leather balls don't become heavier with water so much since they treat the leather. It just becomes more slippery.
Paul Thorburn's kick was the best. It was done with a heavy leather ball and towards latter half of the game and as you say no tee. Most of the others are great too but one can push the synthetic lighter balls with tees a bit further and the kicks in the upper veldt certainly go further through the thin air too. All good kicks though
Ya, still missing the biggest ever kick. Frans Steyns drop goal for Racing against Clermont. Dropped around 58-60m out on the angle and cleared the bar by at least 15m.
Lot of comments from young Fellas here. You need to check out the Guiness book of records. The biggest kick was 77.7m by Springbok Gerry Brand. SA vs England 1932. No I didn't see it, my Grandfather told me about it when I was a kid.
As There are so many more kicks that are worthy of being in this video I will make a part 2 in the near future so as many of the biggest kicks that rugby has seen can be showcased.
It seems to me that the longest kickers are all South Africans. The drop goal from 60 meters is from Riaan Viljoen. The penalty kick at goal from 66 meters is from Francois Steyn then he again kicks at goal from 62 meters. The other drop goal from 52 meters is from Morne Steyn. These are all South Africans.
You need to look at Paul Thorburn's match winning kick. Nearly 65 metres without a tee and using the heavier old style ball. Nothing is going to beat that I'm afraid.
Some of these pitches differ in size. Years ago I watched Glasgow Warriors play Edinburgh and it was on our rugby playing field in Aberdeen which was 85m and I’ve seen games played at pro level on shorter narrower pitches. Watch Joel Stranskys 59m kick vs Aus in 1993 in a windy stadium as well. Andy Mehrtens kicked a 63-64 metre kick vs the Boks in 96 as well that flew over the posts
I've often wondered why drop-goals aren't utilised more to the extent that the points would have to be reduced. Forwards celebrate a hard-won, kickable penalty but stand far enough back from a set-piece or in open play and a drop-goal is impossible to defend.
It's way easier because they're kicking off a tee. That's why kickoffs in the NFL are so long and consistent: it's the only kick that allows the use of a tee.
Thanks for that. If I may did you take into consideration De Wt Ras' penalty against an English touring side in around the mid seventies in Bloemfontein?
A few recent kicks from the 2020 Currie Cup in SA Frans Steyn (Cheetahs) 64m penalty at altitude - ruclips.net/video/xnkf7_MO-W0/видео.html Curwin Bosch (Sharks) 61m at sea level - ruclips.net/video/BFfxgJN1SuE/видео.html Tiaan Swanepoel (Lions) 61m at altitude although I think it was closer to 65m - ruclips.net/video/l8u-EPYhTj4/видео.html
Place kicks off a holder are better for accuracy and travel at straighter angles, but Drop - kicks that hit off the ground go the highest and the furthest of all kicks because they get rikishay effects and they are taken by the wind more.
I also viewed it frame by frame and agree, it looks very short from the camera angle, but those two guys with the flags are standing directly under the posts and have the best view in the house. Of course it's also possible they got it wrong.
Very good compilation. As you mention, there will be lots more worthy kicks that should be included that do NOT include a kicking tee. I guarantee you that the bulk of those will be from South African teams in the High Veldt during the 70s and 80s. Would also expect the dropped goal from Kiwi No. 8 Zinzan Brooke to make an appearance. All thhe kicks on the video were taken by regular team kickers in the backs, but Brookes drop goal was totally instinctive and every regular kicker would have been proud of that. Another great inclusion would have been Aussie prop Matt Dunnings sweetest drop goal for the Waratahs in 2003. That one was a bit of an anti-climax though as it cost his team a place in the semi finals. I know your video is for biggest and longest.... but these would have been the biggest/longest (AND SWEETEST) from a Number 8 and a prop
some great kicks. This is why i never can understand how american football field goal kickers missed frequently enough from 30 and 40 yards out right in front of the posts. The phrase you "had one job" literally comes to mind!
They miss because the ball is snapped back and a guy has to catch the ball and position it while the kicker runs up. In rugby the ball is set on a tee and isn't moving. And a dozen massive guys aren't charging you.
agnostic47 have you heard of a drop goal it’s way tougher than a football field goal you’ve got to time it perfectly and the opposition is charging at you
American/Canadian football kickers kickoff with a tee with the ball leaning backwards. Why do rugby kicks with a tee on their penalty kicks lean the ball forward?
id say the best kick was from dan biggar in the last world cup against england where he had the kick from just behind the halfway line.it was the first game in the group of death and wales were behind at twickenham.brilliant
How are they measuring the Steyn one at 66metres when it's barely on the other side of the HW line on a "quite a small pitch" as the commentators describe it? Even with the angle it's nowhere near 66m. Verified longest kick is Bridlington High School XVs Ernie Cooper at 81 yards with a moderate side wind in 1944!
Actually it pretty close. It isn't quite right but it is close. The field may be small but for a professional match the field has to meet the World rugby standard size which is 100m by 70m with at least 10m in goal. The kick was about 53m out and was about 33m across on the angle (It was about 2m from touch meaning it was about 33m to the center). By Pythagoras you can calculate the distance to about 62.5m.
That is the measurement to the try line. A straight line from where he kicks it to the center of the try line below the center of the cross bar is 62.5m. Simply calculated using the Pythagorean theorem. 53m from the place to the line and 33m from the place to the center of the field gives a hypotenuse of 62.5m which is the calculated distance.

I don't want to demote your dads kick but I'm wondering on the 'moderate' regards wind speed, in the North that could be considered quite a gale by Southern Softie standards ;o) All the best to you and your dad plugging a few over the pearly gates no doubt!
Altitude is the definitive reason why big kickers from SA thinner air less drag if Daley was kicking in those conditions he would be putting them over from 65 metres plus
My main takeaway from this is how awful Stuart Barnes is as a commentator. I wish someone would team him with Eddie Butler to make them both easier to avoid.
Commentator about Daly..."He does have a Siege gun on the left foot". Then 'BOOOM'. Good one
For a moment there, I thought Elliot Daly was Leigh Halfpenny LOL That haircut and beard combo makes them look like brothers.
interfear1 I didn’t notice 😆

leather balls are lighter than todays balls, look it up. Leather balls don't become heavier with water so much since they treat the leather. It just becomes more slippery.
The heavier the ball the further it will travel to an extent
Exactly and in a windy stadium! There’s no wind in these stadiums nowadays
francois Steyn with racing against Clermont on the Michelin drop goal from 60 meters, could be 70m never seen that before

damn Morne Steyn was so good back then...now look at the Bulls 😂

What about the 19 yo Curwin Bosch last week with a 60m penalty or Pat Lambie with the 55m winning kick against New Zealand in 2014
Yeah those are great SA players as well. But Francois Steyn's kicks beats everyone XD
at altitude any of them?
Dian Swanepoel its because of the altitude africa is high up so the air is thinner therefore the ball has less resistance

Stewart Grindlay they lost FUCKING 42-14!😂🤣

Ian O'Regan Paul thorban
Ian O'Regan it was around 63 metres actually. Massive kick nonetheless
I seem to recall that Zinzan Brooke ( NZ) dropped a goal from inside his own 22, not bad for a lock forward. And I am English, but love the game.
