    Nice video mate. It's good to see someone with a passion for kicking sharing their knowledge. I've worked as a coach & kicking coach in NZ off and on and something massively under valued with kicking technique is posture and what you do with all the non kicking parts of your body. Ultimately your kicking leg and plant foot can be doing all the right things but your kick can be derailed by poor shoulder & chest position which then dictates your hip position at contact. High chest over the ball, closed off at a 45° angle and left arm (for RF kicker) up above shoulder high pointing forward approaching contact (see George Ford/Morne Steyn - both excellent technical kickers). Keep up the good work mate.

      Thanks mate, much better phrased than my attempt! There were a couple things like that that I maybe could've mentioned but I don have the understanding to explain it in this video, only been goalkicking for 2 months alone and watching slo-mo replays to understand bits and pieces.

  • @pickngrin73
    @pickngrin73 4 года назад +3

    One thing that’s not mentioned is the swing of the opposite arm. You’ll notice that it’s pulled down and across the body which helps offset the force of the kick and adds to the power. Lots of physics in a kick!

    By far the best video in terms of depth I've found on long distance goalkicking technique, and I'm using it for ⚽️ - but keepers and footballers in general should study rugger kicks, why is it so satisfying to see a lkng driven 70 yard us kick in any of the kick ball games 👊🏻

    Great tip about running towards where you want the ball to go. Because coincidently, that’s also were I need to run to retrieve the ball....
    Difficult to convince someone to be your ball boy when you’re not a pro rugby player and goal kicker.

    Morne Steyn in his prime had the cleanest and smoothest(and most accurate) kicking technique I've ever seen.
    He kicked the exact same way from 55m as he did from 30m.
    I'd love someone to compare HOW Steyn strikes the ball vs others.
    Biggar, Carter, Wilkinson etc all have very technical world class kicking styles, but Steyn just made it look simple.
    Bulls 2009, 2010 Super Rugby titles and Springboks 2009 - 2012 are some his best ever examples...
    He also had the cleanest smoothest drop goals.
    A guy who had the strangest technique was Andre Pretorius

  • @mp9386
    @mp9386 6 лет назад +1

    Useful video, thanks. You have a nice swing - great momentum into the strike gives you good power, and pretty compact leg swing on the way through - not too much hip flexor which is a common fault. Halfpenny talks about keeping the posture upright on the way through rather than head over the ball, is this something you think important?

    • @JamesRFC
      @JamesRFC  6 лет назад +1

      Take what Halfpenny says over me anyday. I think he's saying not to lean too far over the ball, I like to keep my head down because I find myself upright in this position, generally if I'm consciously being upright I'm actually leaning backwards

    • @James-sw9vm
      @James-sw9vm 7 лет назад +1

      You are correct. 1/3 is about right but I hit the nose because the strike point is a weakness of mine. With that said, if it works for you then give it a go. Generally as close to 1/3 the way up you can get is the best and if that's the nose then that's cool

    • @JamesRFC
      @JamesRFC  7 лет назад

      Might as well it's interesting to watch back your technique and see easy improvements quickly. It makes sense but depends on the wind, sometimes you're better going really high like Jordie because then the wind has less effect (don't ask me how just experience)

    • @TheBreakDownTv
      @TheBreakDownTv 7 лет назад

      I kick on a cone sometimes, but I also have a jordie tee. Long range I use your tee and for accuracy I use a cone. I'm succesfullish.

    • @JamesRFC
      @JamesRFC  7 лет назад

      TheBreakDownTv everyone starts on a cone don't they 😂I get two and overlap one half over the other so you can still angle the ball, I use the Gilbert Adjustable Tee but not the one in the video, it's blue and green and you twist to adjust but I leave it in the lower setting, it's amazing. Heavy too so never blows over

    • @TheBreakDownTv
      @TheBreakDownTv 7 лет назад +1

      James RFC I have 3 tees: dan carter
      daly/yours
      Wilkinson

    Please read my comment!!! Can u explain how Jonathan Thurston kicks, like how her curves it every time please!!!!?? And Or his or dan carters making the balll curve the opposite way they usually do !!!!!

    • @JamesRFC
      @JamesRFC  4 года назад +2

      Dan Carter's clip was the wind, he hit it normally just lower and the wind brought it around. 99% of kickers, if they're right-footed, the ball curls right to left as it's the most natural motion. For most of these people, less curl is ideal so some kickers like DC don't curl it much at all. Thurston's style is quite inconsistent and it's impressive how much success he has; he has to contend not only with the distance and height factors, but also the curve as too much/little will mean he will miss. Essentially he places the football very flat on the tee and has a run up with a large angle. The contact on the ball is as far to the right he can get and his follow-through is across his body to the left. This means he's kicking the ball with a right-to-left follow through which means the ball will also travel right-to-left, whereas if you hit the middle of the ball (facing the posts) and follow-through straight the ball will travel straight

    • @deadwillytv6528
      @deadwillytv6528 4 года назад

      James RFC bro thanks so much, we’re about on the foot does Thurston hit the ball, like the “forward inside” part?

    • @JamesRFC
      @JamesRFC  4 года назад +1

      @@deadwillytv6528 Not too sure, you can have success with the forward-inside part or you could use the laces as described in my video. I think the contact he uses is as I described in this video, but I am not JT so that's where I cannot be certain

    • @James-sw9vm
      @James-sw9vm 7 лет назад

      Then I think there's other things wrong about your technique because forward is the best way, not arrogance btw just science. Dont think about backspin that should happen every single time if everything else is on point. Angle it forwards and re-learn your kicking style

    Nice video. I like how you have slowed down the footage and repeated it so you can really see each player's technique.
    BTW would you have any recommendations for a good quality kicking tee? I bought a Patrick one, but both the front pegs got kicked off (glued and taped, then kicked off again) after about a month's use. Is this poor technique from me following through with my kick, or just a poor quality tee?

    So you say anyone can kick no matter how strong they are? Huh? ... could a baby kick that far!?

    No goal kickers deliberately curl their kicks. Well professional kickers anyway. Since it offers no advantage to a straight kick and adds another dimension to the kick making it more difficult since the amount you curve it by is never consistent. my coach by chance happened to be an ex American football college kicker and says a curve to the ball just shows your not striking the ball correctly. So whilst some kickers have a curve on their kick no kicker intentionally put a curve on it. The curve on Barrett's kick is just where he has poor technique and it's become a habit

      Exactly my point but instead of changing it he embraces it and angles the ball to the right post as you can see. Plus you're wrong to think they don't do it on purpose, clearly never watched NRL. Thurston for example always does so deliberately and Reynolds, Smith, Maloney etc. It's not uncommon. I agree it's dumb but clearly deliberate for SOME.

      Mate, the shape of a league and union ball are different from a grid iron ball which is why they curl. Pretty stupid if you weren't able to put those 2 together.
