    The Thorburn one is even more impressive when you think about how rugby balls those days weighed an absolute ton! No built in technology to make it more streamlined or aerodynamic. Just leather and I swear, a brick, inside 😂

      It has to be the most impressive. I don't whether those leather balls weighed more than present day ones straight out the shop but they certainly soaked up a bit of water.

    I’ve never understood why we don’t see more drop goals. You take 3 points and the opposition then kicks posession back to you. If you miss you still have a posession territory battle from the opposition 22 .

      You don't see many from New Zealand because there's this idiotic mindset here that they are not in the spirit of the game, and you only use them in an emergency.

      @@CarnivorousMower what a load of absolute shite! The reason drop goals are not 1st thought in NZ is because attack is always number 1, hence a historic win record of 80% and 90% from 2010-now. Against the spirit🤭

    The first one is still to this day, the furthest anyone's kicked and probably will. Not only was he a monster power kicker but he had wind and location behind him for max distance, it's so crazy to watch it

    Martyn Davies, a Welsh hero at Rugby Lions RFC used to give the ball some lick. Had to retrieve them from a street when I was a ballboy. And Dean Morgan our stand off was great from the hand. Glad we got Goff Davies as our coach in the mid 90's. He brought along some great Welsh players. Happy memories.

    I'm a South African and I've seen Frans Steyn kick monster kicks but that kick from Thorburn is something else. Everything was remarkable - the distance, the accuracy whilst the conditions were so horrid

      Yeah I remember when the Sharks beat us Lions at Ellis Park during Super Rugby, penalty at around 60 metres they gave the ball to Frans I said oh shit, we lost that game lol, he's a legend

    You missed Gavin Hastings’ penalty kicks against New Zealand in 1990 - two of them within a few minutes. The NZ crowd laughed when he lined up the first kick. They were silent when he lined up the second.

    I like the Bouthier defensive kick against England. He hits it and... next thing you know the French are charging and the English are retreating as far as the north of Scotland to try to catch it. Hilarious and ridiculous.

    0:38 I swear it sounds like the commentator says "and Paul Pogba is going to attempt a goal!" I genuinely laughed, because I'd kinda love to see the actual Pogba play rugby and get flattened. That kinda made my afternoon, just picturing that. No personal offence to Paul Pogba, but he helped make dabbing a big thing, so watching a gigantic New Zealand front rower absolutely clean him out would be a bit funny.

    Paul Thorburn kick was another level over the next best. I've kicked modern rugby balls and those from the Thorburn era. Can get double the distance on the new balls

    Can people actually appreciate Marcelo Bosch, watch the kick in the vid and watch his other long range attempts on RUclips, I have truly never seen someone kick a ball so effortlessly. he genuinely kicks it like a centrefield 5 metre conversion and suddenly the ball has travelled 65 metres. actually scratch that some players hit 5 metre conversions harder than he kicks 60 metre penalties. its ridiculous

    These long shots just highlight the pathetic nature of rugby union. Why not score a try? Both teams need to lose two players and get rid of the ruck and maul. It will make a much better game.

      @@ieatbananaskins7926 but hes not been tested at the highest level. He might be a handy player but far to early to say yet in my view. McCaw was a pretty good player with a man of the match debut v Ireland at a similar age. Club rugby is not a goid guide for such a big call, in my view. Lets see how he goes after a few tests

      @@joedennehy386 there was a time when Beauden Barrett was uncapped and people would’ve been saying the same thing and look at him now, Coombes is more than capable of performing at test level and I doubt that he’s going to have a similar experience as James Lowe
      Besides he’s been named for the Irish summer tests for when the Lions are gone, I predict that he’s going to be the main talking point of that tour, with a hat trick against USA and 2 against Japan
