The Thorburn one is even more impressive when you think about how rugby balls those days weighed an absolute ton! No built in technology to make it more streamlined or aerodynamic. Just leather and I swear, a brick, inside 😂
It has to be the most impressive. I don't whether those leather balls weighed more than present day ones straight out the shop but they certainly soaked up a bit of water.
I’ve never understood why we don’t see more drop goals. You take 3 points and the opposition then kicks posession back to you. If you miss you still have a posession territory battle from the opposition 22 .
You don't see many from New Zealand because there's this idiotic mindset here that they are not in the spirit of the game, and you only use them in an emergency.
@@CarnivorousMower what a load of absolute shite! The reason drop goals are not 1st thought in NZ is because attack is always number 1, hence a historic win record of 80% and 90% from 2010-now. Against the spirit🤭
The first one is still to this day, the furthest anyone's kicked and probably will. Not only was he a monster power kicker but he had wind and location behind him for max distance, it's so crazy to watch it
Martyn Davies, a Welsh hero at Rugby Lions RFC used to give the ball some lick. Had to retrieve them from a street when I was a ballboy. And Dean Morgan our stand off was great from the hand. Glad we got Goff Davies as our coach in the mid 90's. He brought along some great Welsh players. Happy memories.
I'm a South African and I've seen Frans Steyn kick monster kicks but that kick from Thorburn is something else. Everything was remarkable - the distance, the accuracy whilst the conditions were so horrid
The Welsh kick by Thorburn with Scottsman Bill Murray commentating is the stuff of legends from Cape Town South Africa. 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🇿🇦
Yeah I remember when the Sharks beat us Lions at Ellis Park during Super Rugby, penalty at around 60 metres they gave the ball to Frans I said oh shit, we lost that game lol, he's a legend
You missed Gavin Hastings’ penalty kicks against New Zealand in 1990 - two of them within a few minutes. The NZ crowd laughed when he lined up the first kick. They were silent when he lined up the second.
I like the Bouthier defensive kick against England. He hits it and... next thing you know the French are charging and the English are retreating as far as the north of Scotland to try to catch it. Hilarious and ridiculous.
0:38 I swear it sounds like the commentator says "and Paul Pogba is going to attempt a goal!" I genuinely laughed, because I'd kinda love to see the actual Pogba play rugby and get flattened. That kinda made my afternoon, just picturing that. No personal offence to Paul Pogba, but he helped make dabbing a big thing, so watching a gigantic New Zealand front rower absolutely clean him out would be a bit funny.
Paul Thorburn kick was another level over the next best. I've kicked modern rugby balls and those from the Thorburn era. Can get double the distance on the new balls
Can people actually appreciate Marcelo Bosch, watch the kick in the vid and watch his other long range attempts on RUclips, I have truly never seen someone kick a ball so effortlessly. he genuinely kicks it like a centrefield 5 metre conversion and suddenly the ball has travelled 65 metres. actually scratch that some players hit 5 metre conversions harder than he kicks 60 metre penalties. its ridiculous
@@fergus156 nope, curwin bosh was playing in a stadium 50m from the ocean and steyn in france. Only joburg/pretoria is at alititude, durban, cape town and east london stadiums are all next to the sea
Could put a good number of Naas Botha kicks in this too. Nice video, but not one Naas drop goal from his own 10, kinda takes away some credit from it. But I’m being a harsh critic 😂 Good selection otherwise
Try this DON CLARK NZ fullback 6 penilties aginst 59 lions couple of huge ones TINY NAUDA SAFRICA ithink he kicked the winner over68 yds wet leather ball against NZ
These long shots just highlight the pathetic nature of rugby union. Why not score a try? Both teams need to lose two players and get rid of the ruck and maul. It will make a much better game.
How can he be one of the most promising players when he hasn't played even a single test yet? He looks a handy club player with potential. He probably needs to pick 6 or 8. The positions are different. Thanks for the tip, i had a look

Paul Thorburn's kick! Leather ball, looked a bit of a moist day, old style boots......what a kick!
I like the part when the guy kicked the ball, that was pretty great
And then he scored a goal. Most of the time.
#amazing
What about when they even did on grass oh my god🧐
I liked when it went in between the poles
You mean the very long kicks…
How about the big man paul miller place kick from 5 in from touch on his own 22 on the mighty brook clear it by 15 meters
Now try these kicks in Ellis Park.... The ball flys for days up there. It's crazy when you experience it for the first time.

Easily good from 70 metres that droppie

Great stuff again Andrew, cheers.
Morne Steyn dwarfs them all. All of his kicks went over with at least another 10m to spare
That Henry Slade kick is 4 years old already? Shit me
Wait, what!, jeez
Best kick in the video for me.
Great vid as usual keep it up mr forde
Guys the longest goal kick ever was a 90m goal kick by Louis Moolman but I cant find any footage
I was at the Arms Park in '86 for Thorburns's massive hoof! Daly's kicks are all the more astonishing for the minimal approach.....Two steps?
Could YOU PLEASE make a video of 10 minutes of Scotland being scotland
Great video and do u have any videos on Blitzboks Justin Geduld cause patience is our greatest thing❤🏉🔥🤝
Francois Steyn never disapoints.
I saw De Wet Ras knock a penalty over from his own 25m in a game between Free State and Ireland if I remember correctly in the 70`s

Every second south african school boy kicks that distance easily.
Why the the hell is MORNE Steyn not here!!?? WHY!!??? 😭😭😭
Waiting for the day Curwin Bosch will to take the place of Handre Pollard for South-Africa. Thanks good video as always.
Sad to not see the 66m goal kick from the young Emirates Lions player vs Bulls in this video
"15 Longest Kicks in Rugby History!" More like the 15 longest that there is actually footage of.

Brock James too, top 14 semi-final 2010
And Jhonny Vermeulen did it twice with the old leather rugby ball the Super Springbok in South Africa from hes own 22

Is the Marcelo Bosh one from the Premiership final?
Nope just a generic premiership game

longest rugby UNION kicks that were on TV, the goal and drop kicks aren't even the longest recorded in either code.
