I play Halfback and our Inside centre is our goal kicker, he decided to leave the country so i want to replace him as kicker, i've been practising for a month and a half and videos like these really help, this one by far has given me the best advice! cheers.
I think Shreko shreko likes u For me it was about the speed that I was going when I got to the ball. I take 4 steps back and 3 to the left. This gives me plenty of time to speed up before I connect with the ball. You also want to remember to punch through the ball, not stop when you hit it. When I kick the ball, my back foot leaves the ground for a split second and when I hit the ground, my momentum carries me forward slightly. If you need any clarification lmk and if you want, I can’t email/text you a vid of me kicking so you can see what I mean.
Would love to see you review kickers from the past and explain their particular technique and if they're actually doing something wrong. Guys like Grant Fox,Naas Botha,Andy Irvine,Dusty Hare or even the man who really popularized round the corner kicking in New Zealand Barry John .Great videos by the way
I'm a user of the hurdle technique, and your tips about taking a short step at the beginning of the approach really helped. Great all-round advice. Best rugby technique channel on RUclips.
I was having so much trouble with my goal kicking, until I watched this video. It’s excellent at breaking down kicking into small manageable steps and it’s so useful for identifying problems and providing specific solutions. Couldn’t recommend this video more!
Really well explained and broken down, footy season is on hold due to covid, and I’ve gone down to the park a bit since lockdown to try goal kicking and I’ve had quite some trouble as i am not a goal kicker, will use these tips next time i go down for kicking thank you
By far the best kicking tutorial out there (and love my rugby bricks kicking tee!). Would love some help though… As I have ‘pigeon feet’ (my feet naturally angle inwards a lot when I walk or run) I struggle a lot with the ball hooking from right to left and find it hard to get power straight through the strike. Any advice for helping flatten my foot or point my toe outwards on the strike (like in 13:24 of the video) rather than have it hook inwards? I feel like I can’t ever get a ‘clean’ strike even when I do land a good kick and when I focus hard to fix this natural inclination the ball slices away every time. I’ve struggled with this for years.
Thanks for the kind words! Pleased the video was of value. This is a unique question and not one that I have coached... yet! I would be more than happy to check your technique out and offer some advice: rugbybricks.com/collections/rugby-training-programs/products/rugby-bricks-online-goal-kicking-review
I would start with kicking into a net. Focus on good ball strikes and what that feels like. Then progress to kicking at goal. Focus on ball flight and strikes over distance. Pete
When kicking off the vortex tee are you kicking the end of the ball or what part of the ball are you kicking with the ball lying forward at that angle?
Hi Peter - how long would you recommend a kicking practice session should be for my 13 year old? Loves to get practice session in before training but not sure what is optimal before you get drop off (which leads to frustration!). 30mins or maybe less? Thanks in advance.
That's an excellent question. Continuously kicking until exhaustion sets in can result in frustration and decreased performance. My recommendation is to limit full goal kicks to 20 per session. However, focus on incorporating other types of kicks such as grubbers, punts, drop kicks, and spirals before transitioning to goal kicks. By doing this, you can ensure that you approach each goal kick with maximum energy and power. - Peter
Hey Tommy, great question. Once you understand your natural ball flight then you can start making a plan for the wind. Big thing is to find the line you want to start the ball on and commit to that 100% this is a great example of committing to the line 100% ruclips.net/video/-2ksNPBKGNY/видео.html
As a league player this helped me a lot I was chosen goal kicker for my team and I scored all the winning goals. Before my goal kick % is 65% now 91.2%
Title says The 10 Pillars of Goal Kicking but it starts with pillar number 2, I feel like I've missed the foundational step in pillar number 1. Is that pillar in a seperate video ?.
Hey David, Taller Tee means you need to keep a taller body and hips on approach and through contact. Reece Hodge is a great example of staying tall and strong through the kick. Here is a video of Reece talking through his technique: ruclips.net/video/d-2oltNjV98/видео.html
I find it really hard to change my kicking foot with the hard part because right now i make my kicking foot straight on to the ball and it doesn’t go very far
Hey Robin, Great question. My top tip would not to become obsessed with kicking off a tee. Use grubbers, drop kicks, punt kicks, chip kicks, left foot, right foot etc to keep building the skill. Just Tee kicking drives everyone insane at some point ha! Pete
Great question, short answer: start with the RBVortex Mid Cut but for more info on the tees watch this video: ruclips.net/video/uNzw7ot9JC0/видео.htmlsi=jNGqReoXkEHlJtg7 Thanks! Peter
Hi I am a 9 year old wanna be kicker's mom, no clue what to do...Just one question, the degrees at which you approach the ball from, can it differ from behind the post to the side line, example behind the post approach at 85 degrees, and at the 10m side line at a 45 degrees?
Hey! Great question and awesome work being a kicking Mom! I would be leaning more towards having the same approach angle each time for consistency. Pillar 4 - Approach Lane is the best part of this video, simple is good while you are young! Pete
I was taught to kick the ball on the end or angled on the tee away from me but I find it more comfortable to kick it angled towards me or hitting the face of the ball. Is this objectively worse?
Ball set up in very individual, once you have found a ball placement that suits your style. Stick with in and make it consistent. What tee are you using?
Hey Miles! That is going to continue for a few years until you get your technique and muscle memory consistent with your goal kicking. Keep working hard and showing up, the off days will become few and far between. Pete
