The military lady at 4:02 who runs in, kicks, then prances off is fantastic
Omg you are right hahahaha
Lady Jaye is awesome!
Are you sure it was a lady? Kinda looked like a guy to me...
Rush N Attack homage
"Jack on!" Was definitely better than the opposite, to be fair.
Mega Man Battle Network got close to that too
What's wrong with "Jill on!"?
Jack off?
@@abrahammay2063 because you can’t jill off
Isn’t that what Bender was doing?
Total length of video: 285 secs.
Total length of "SNES Drunk": 4.5 secs.
1.58% of the video was spent listening to "SNES Drunk".
WOW THANKS FOR WASTING MY TIME
This reminds me of people who calculated how much space the SEGA voice took up in Sonic.
*JACK ON!*
Truly a hero the world needs.
But then you gotta reverse the command phrase to take it off, and THAT'S awkward. Can't keep a straight face when you have to yell 'JACK OFF' to go back to bring regular radical teenager, Billy Crash
(I know I'm mixing versions go with it)
When he takes off the suit what does he say then?
There is also a Game Boy game based on the Metal Jack source material but it's a tactical strategy game. Also, the voice actually says "Armor On" in the unreleased US version of the SNES game.
that actually sounds fun, but i love me some tactical games
3:27 the blurb on the box is pretty funny. "It is the year 2015..."
Ha, remember when that seemed so far off into the future? Geesh..
And here we are, 6 years after 2015 and we don't have any mech armor, just some robot dogs with guns. Disappointing.
Imagine being the game designer for this one and knowing Atlus wouldn't publish this outside of Japan because it was atrocious and didn't want to hurt their reputation but were more than happy to put their name on Virtual Hydlide and publish that in every region.
I'd say ouch. Then again virtual hydlide was on the Saturn and the Saturn essentially didn't really exist outside Japan.
@@JohnDoe-wq5eu Saturn did okay until 1997, that's when the PlayStation really took off, and went from merely being ahead of the Saturn to leaving Sega completely in the dust. Saturn sales also dropped off when the N64 came out in NA at the end of '96.
4:09 "Player dead" had me dead even as a non-player.
1:33 goddamn that suzuki katana in thebackground looks good
This game jacks on. I do the opposite whenever SNES Drunk publishes a new video.
So you Jill Off?
Bravo 👍
I always remember the magazine add for this game shared space with “BlaZeon: The Bio-Cyborg Challenge” which, based on the box art, looked like some kind of anime shoot-em-up.
Thank you for making Tuesday's great again
“… stop abruptly to leer at you”
🤣🤣🤣
Fun fact: The anime Armored Police Metal Jack is a spiritual sequel to Toho's tokusatsu show Dennou Keisatsu Cybercop.
Nintendo of America: Change the Jack On soundbite, Americans can't deal with it!
Nintendo of Japan: OK. We changed the sound to the sound Jack makes after he Jacks On.
Sound: UhGRUUGH!!!!
Nintendo of America: ...
Nintendo of America: You're cancelled. This game is cancelled.
Jack-on is a cool character but if you beat the game on expert it unlocks a secret character named "Jack-off", he's really explosive.
I think this game was a victim of premature release-ulation.
They rushed it to market and ended up having it come too early.
They blew a lot of money on it, one would say a huge load.
Getting us SNES Drunk on a Tuesday morning, you bastard.
The 90s show "Martial Law" would've been perfect for a beat 'em up [Scott Pilgrim style]
They would need two games. The first would end on a cliffhanger, then the second would start a new story without resolving the cliffhanger.
The game may be lousy but the video was awesome. Jack on!
"Dull as dishwater" is an expert level reviewer quip 😆. Never heard that one before.
Look it up, it's an old saying. Alex seems to be busting more and more of them out as he slowly transforms into a grumpy old man.
It's accurate I'll say that much.
This game looks bland and incredibly repetitive and frankly boring.
Of all the games we didn't get this is one I don't really mind we never got.
You really haven't heard that before?
That's an old saying and it's stuff just like that, that puts him a cut above the rest.
It's from the same school of commentary as "faster than shit off a shovel", "sweating like a rapist" or "flat as a fart".
When the jack on ended: 3:41
Jack On..... Apply directly to the....... uh on second thought, scratch that thought.
This anime is a spiritual continuation of tokusatsu Cibercops. It was very popular in my country.
"... is dull as dishwater."
Hahaha, I'm definitely adding that line to my repertoire!
I laugh cause of the jack on joke, not the innuendo part, just the running "on" lines throughout history. Remember MegaMan zx "megamerge" vs Rockmans "rock on". Which would you rather shout? Also reason the game was cancelled to us wasn't cause it was crap, it was licensing issues, it always is. We have plenty of crap that came overshores, some they "shouldn't have".
Bird on
Mask on
Face on
Helmet on
Go on
Flash on
And ever fun
Chakusou
Souchaku
Both roughly meant "to put on"
Loved that even recently when localizing Japanese games some publishers felt the need to erase any overseas reference, even in games when it was very obvious where it came from.
I wonder if this was exclusive to the US or if British publishers changed every location to "London" and food to "fish and chips". Typical British names would be hilarious too
The enemies seem to movie fast enough to suit the Benny Hill theme tune.
Are you a righteous enough chap to rescue the Prime Minister?
@@ch-xr2bx jolly good show! You saved the prime minister, have a good One, lad!
Both of those sound bites made me lol
I swear Japanese always come up with those cool names, I mean Armored Police Metal Jack, Ninja Baseball Batman, that is so cool
Agree with everything said, high nostalgia tho this was one of around 8 SFC games my friend had in the early 90s so we still played this on the regular and love that muffled JACK ON! soundbite.
I remember seeing the ad for this in almost every EGM back in the day.
Love that anime 90's style, so much Better than the crap of nowadays
Considering how popular Robots and Jacking on are, this game really dropped the load.
Yeah, you could say it really blew it, too.
I appreciate the PLAYER DEAD notification
That alternate US sound for the "Jack On" line is the same as Suburban Sasquatch. Change my mind.
Well, I suppose it is par for the course. It is a rare miracle when a licensed game is actually good. It mostly depends on the studio developing it. During the 90's, Sega, Konami, and Capcom were usually the exception when creating a licensed game.
I always enjoyed the AVGN reviewing games from Laughin' Jokin' Numbnuts.
When OFF is reached for the Jack character, that is where the sound bite would be concerning 😮
i thought ''Jack on'' was funny but the drunk man's grunt they replaced it with in the localized version is way funnier
I think it's pretty crazy that the localization of this game got as far as it did in a time when Atlus couldn't even get a localized Shin Megami Tensei game released. "Our biggest franchise? No can do! This trash? SURE THING!"
I suspect there may had been plans to dub the anime that were scrapped, but unfortunately I don't recall anyone in the anime scene finding traces of an English Metal Jack anywhere.
Nintendo had a no religion policy back then and since SMT is all about demons and gods it never had a chance especially with the Law faction. This game makes sense because it's so generic and not likely to offend anyone.
@@wdbisl True, but;
1) There were SMT games on non-Nintendo platforms.
2) Other games with heavy religious themes (I.E. ActRaiser and EVO: Search for Eden, and even Castlevanias to an extent) were able to come out with edits/removal of the most blatant religious names and symbols. I mean, sure, it'd be weird having YHWH with some goofy name like "The Greatmaster", but it couldn't have been as bad as the PS1 Revelations: Persona localizaton.
@@cabbusses Its not just YHWH the fact in the first SMT you have Lilith mentioned as well as a Jesus symbolism with the law friend plus the Angel's being in a bad light especially in the second game. Theres just too much. You have to remember this is the same era as the panic about Dungeons & Dragons. Anything showing god or Christianity in a negative light would have been seen as blasphemous and satanic.
"Shirtless Johnny Bravo" 😂
At first I thought Ken Striker and Billy Crash was just a joke
Long time watcher and I love your sign off catch phrase. Simple, humble, and makes me feel good.
I armored police metal jack every night before I fall asleep
I love your vids man, keep it up!! Lotsa love from Uruguay
Jack on!!
Kamen Rider for SFC is a pretty good licensed Beat em up.
3:42 Isnt the line "amour up"
3:43 This is like the Puck Man thing....
Suburban Sasquatch?!? 3:41
From listening to DrunkFriend, riiiiight on over to this channel! :)
Today's a good day. :D
Andre the Giant didn't want Wrestlemania on the NES to be his last gaming moment.
0:32 Interesting point. There's an article in that idea...
1:22 'Gief like priority on that splash...
That level theme at the end sounds a LOT like Donovan's Atlantis.
Maybe the enemy attack distance is an homage to kids shows such as these where they kick and punch far enough away not to actually hit the talent.
Megaman Battle Network has entered the chat: Jack in!
Ohhh "jack ON", that wasn't what I originally heard. :P
I wouldn't want anyone to play this, but man do you look cool when you're taking guys out as soon as they enter the screen and tapping their hurtbox with the tip of your foot to get around their reach. Nice playing!
Red Jack's jump kick is the safest way to deal with enemies when you don't have a gun.
Unfortunately, you don't have the jump kick in mech form, and the final stage forces you in mech form the whole way for a boss rush, including bosses you originally fought on foot... meaning you can't just shoot or jump-kick them anymore.
So this is an origin story for those silly Tekken characters?
So you're saying I should take Metal Jack off my wishlist?
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!!
[insert "jack on!" joke here.]
Probably meant "jack-in!" (as in, "connect your brain to the cybersuit's control network!"), but it got messed up in Engrish.
Your menton of giant monsters being so big in Japan makes me wonder why we don't have a crapton more cryptid games in the US. Sure, I'd fight Mothman.
Maybe it was because Ultraman sold terribly? Of course, Ultraman had terrible sales because it was awful. I really loved the AVGN episode where he reviewed Godzilla games. It ended with a Super Famicom game that was definitely worth playing, but never was sold in the USA. I love how he burned with rage at the end.
"Jack On"? Hm, I have to ask the famous Doctor Vladyislaw Jerkov what he thinks about that wording....
Sooooo many bad licensed games never left Japan. Their version of a borderline unplayable LJN or Acclaim-published movie license game was the Bandai-published manga/anime game.
It was especially dire during the Famicom era, as illustrated here on RUclips by Chrontendo.
My brother imported some Hokuto no Ken (a.k.a. Fist of the North Star) Super Famicom vs. fighting games from Japan in the 90s. They were very disappointing.
And lucky us, Bandai bought Namco years later. Yeesh.
Where is Simple Jack? Is he having ice cream in Heaven?
Whoever greenlit this game is a real jack on
"dull as dishwater" when did you become a grandma?
I know I was always sad we never got a Roseanne video game
Considering how they butchered just about every license back then, thats probably for the best 🤷♀️
How could something so awful get any worse?
You have a great rest of your day too. Still praying for you SnesDrunk
I discovered ROMs and emulators in February of 1999. It was one of the happiest times of my life. I got to play many games that the USA never got, and found that for every one game not sold in the USA, 10 were either awful or average at best. Around age 8 it was because I was a huge videogame fan and knew many videogames came from there. My burning desire to go is practically a part of me. I will finally get to go next year, and item #1 on my bucket list will be finished.
I really laughed at the Sailor Moon games because I was a fan. They were awful. They were released before the USA got a translation, and that would explain why many didn't arrive.
I enjoyed the translated FFV ROM very much.
Hum... just checked about the anime series on Wikipedia. It was supposed to be a sequel to Cybercop, though it ended up not being. Cybercop was on TV here in Brazil when I was a kid and I loved it, even though it had terrible effects. The funny thing is, the first time I saw the name Lucifer was on this show. It took me years to realize its actual meaning. XD Anyways, I'd probably have loved Metal Jack if it was on TV here as well.
Just yesterday I was listening to the Brigandine soundtrack. Best Atlus game ever in my opinion. New Almekia's battle theme makes me splooge every time. The U.S. version, not the "Grand" edition.
I like how there isn't any gameplay footage of the silver character on the video
This anime never took off but my uncle had a few copied episodes on VHS for some reason and it is one of my very best childhood memories. The design of the characters is still one of the coolest things in the world to me. Someone help me find a copy!
Thanks for uploading and I hope you have a great rest of your day!
I think that we all know why the cancelled U.S. release of this game couldn't use the catchphrase "Jack On!"
On the plus side, the health bar/charge bar HUD gave me an idea for a cool sword handle design :)
That game is AVGN material
Not gonna defend the gameplay (though it does remind me of Bad Dudes vs Dragon Ninja, which I fondly remember), but I do love this game's artwork and mecha designs. I wish we've gotten more like this (with better gameplay) before power armors stopped being cool for the mainstream audience.
Jack on!!!
I love your channel
Keep calm and jack on.
I say it before, and I'll say it again... The old wrestling references never fail!
I swear that I read "Forgotten Gems" in the title, so it was funny the amount of trash you said about the game in the review
Poor Atlus, they also made Friday The 13th.
I think I remember watching the anime as a kid
High potential? low realisation. But mechform - badass!
To put a positive spin on this, this game is still better than so many other games lol
Another great Video like always!
You should try playing Choujin Sentai Jetman on NES. I don't know if you'll like it but I liked it as a kid. There is a surprise at the end of stages.
The AVGN reviewed it in his Power Rangers episode, and did like it. There were a few things he didn't like, but what game didn't have limitations?
Bubblegum Crisis Male
Thanks for the vid 👍
Yes, Thatlus.
I will have a great rest of my day.. Jackin' on lmao
The localized names are obviously superior
The music is neat, though. That's something.
So we get JACK ON
HARD (at the top of the screen)
then
PLAYER DEAD
physically demanding game
3:20 How did they manage to get anime style box art approved in the early nineties? I almost missed out on Suikoden because of how atrocious that cover art was....
Even Ranma 1/2: Hard Battle had the characters on its box "westernized", even though it was based on a manga and anime series that was somewhat popular in the US at the time. (The game that preceded it was modified into Street Combat, as Ranma was unknown in the west at the time.)
Alisia Dragoon
Between snes and ps2 they have
Alot of forgotten games .
Never saw that one before
