The legacy synth blocks in the Helix I've always felt are criminally underrated. They're tough to use right out of the box, but setting up a very certain type of signal to send into the front of them is the key to unlocking their potential. In this video I want to run through the compressor/limiter/noise gate settings that actually make the synth effects useable. I'll also be sharing one of my favorite presets that I've created in the style of a generic 80's Lead Synth.

Fantastic. I have a use for this for sure. Very well presented! Thank you
Super cool sounds!!
This tutorial is so good that I've been able to use synth sounds with my acoustic violin on loud stages. I go direct out, use IEMs, and had to tweak the gate -- but still, it tracks amazingly and absolutely blows people's minds everytime they hear it.
Thanks Alex -- I'd pretty much written off the Helix synths until I found this.
Glad it was helpful! What pickup do you use on your acoustic? I just switched to the LR Baggs
@@AlexPriceMusician I've been using Aceto pickups for years -- haven't found anything I like more.
Decent output level, but the big thing for me is the dual piezo elements built into the base of the bridge -- way more balanced than any of the semi permanent pickups where you put the element in the wing.
This is cool! Thanks dude.
Fantastic!! im playing the Chapman Stick into the Helix floor into two powered monitors... this has been so helpful... working on getting a Joe Zawinul type lead tone
Awesome! Would love to hear that if you ever record it.
Great video! I kept saying "WTF am I doing wrong here?!" when messing with synths. Now, I feel the fundamental issue has been resolved, and I can actually utilize synths more effectively. Many Thanks
Great video! It IS.a pain to get this working, and this is a great approach.
Wow thank you! I’ve at last figured out how to get the synth stuff to sound good!
Happy to help!
Hey Alex!
Thank you so much for this information!
Im also curious about your "korg miku" preset, is this one really somehow emulating original pedal?
"It sounds similar" is more realistic. I wasn't actively seeking out to emulate it, I just happened upon a synth tone that did it and I tried to take it a step further with filtering for the different vowels.
Cool vid! What if we needed blocks / DSP for amp & cab?
On this preset, it's basically maxing out the DSP. That's mostly the reverb and other effects. The Synth blocks in general do not take too much on their own though so at minimum, I'd say you'd be fine with two LA Studio comp blocks (also low DSP) and the synth of your choosing. You'd have plenty of DSP left and 5 blocks..
Hi can we create organ, flute, saxphone sound as like Roland Gr55Synth
Nothing I would use on my Helix bu it was a great video

I got the patch sounding just right, the trouble now is the sweet spot for the artifacts... 😂
What about playing external midi devices and recording midi note data with daw directly from helix floor? Possible or no?
No. The helix uses basic midi commands to send or receive messages that can make patch changes or parameter adjustments. It doesn’t interpret midi like you would get from a keyboard or a guitar with a midi pickup.
I thought I was the only one who ever uses the synth patches in Line 6 boards.
You are not alone.
Okay, there are at least three of us 😂
They still need a lot of work.

I don't find the compressors to be necessary, and those are absolutely causing those weird artifacts.
