"She's not hiding from the things that people are saying about her." - So the Look What You Made Me Do music video is what turned me into a Swiftie for this very reason. Before that I never really listened to her music and didn't vibe with the whole sweet heart girl next door image. I listened to a lot of MCR and Papa Roach and the like. But then I saw LWYMMD, and there is a scene at the very end of the video where past Taylors are standing around doing just what you noted -- poking fun at all the gossip and catty things people would say about her. It completely and totally earned my respect, and I went back and started listening to all her music. There's not a day that goes by now that I don't listen to at least one Taylor song.

On the note of people accusing your channel of not being helpful. I had an ex who during a blow up snapped at me saying that I can't just watch your videos and feel warm and fuzzy and think I'm better. I never thought these videos would 'fix' me, but they make me happy. I ended up not watching much of the channels content after that until she left me and now I'm trying to get back the joy I used to find in these videos. I had a number of things I care about come to an end recently, so I'm very glad that when I came to my senses you all were still here. Thanks for doing what you do 💚

    • @nathanrohde3292
      @nathanrohde3292 2 месяца назад +11

Videos can't "fix" a person per se, but they make you aware of how common their individual problems are and expose them to a variety of potential solutions. They give people a starting point from which they can begin to take action to improve their life.

    • @soulfireonfire6423
      @soulfireonfire6423 2 месяца назад +6

Of course I don’t know the entire situation, but whatever it was that she said watching videos feeling all warm and fuzzy , wasn’t going to make you better, that’s just a shxtty thing to say.
I understand it was during an argument but anyway…
Again I don’t know what was going on .
      But whatever she meant by
“ make you better “ or when you said “ you knew it wasn’t going to “ fix you .”
      None of.us are ever
      “fixed ! “
We can work on ourselves in numerous ways! For different reasons.
We also need to make sure that the reason a person is working on themselves , is because that person believes , whole heartedly, it’s something that needs to be not because someone else thinks you need to.
There’s a difference between working on yourself because you know you need to for you! So you will benefit in being able to experience life as your true self.
Not because someone else thinks you should work on something because they don’t like something about you or want you to be a certain way to make them happy
! People shouldn’t be in a relationship to change people or to fix why they are unhappy!
Because that person, isn’t ever going to be happy and they will make the person they’re with miserable as they keep losing pieces of who they are. It’s much easier for someone who doesn’t want to work on themselves, to
put the burden on someone else!

I was a Swiftie since seeing her perform in a Target parking lot. I saw a star in the making.
So I loved her. I loved this song.
Fast forward. My autistic, non verbal son was going to transition to middle school. I was worried. I had haters and I was popular. Middle school is just hard.
We listened to this song a lot over the summer as how we deal eithstuff. Shake it off.
First day of school in drop off line, we are playing this song, a little girl tapped on the window and said- I love Taylor.
Shegrabbed his hand & walked in with my son. After that day we played that song walking in as more and more kids joined us.
We were at a state special olympics meet a week ago. A kid came up to me from another school & said "I remember you! I loved dancing in to school to Shake it off. I was so nervous that first couple weeks & you made me smile in the morning being so goofy."
Learning to be resilient is a good thing.

Criticism can be heavy and it's easy to fixate on our flaws, which is why I liked this song a lot. Not just because the tune is catchy, sometimes you just need an upbeat uplifting song to make you feel like it's alright and it's okay to be happy regardless if our being, our actions, or the way we speak does not aligned with others.

I like your take on Swift’s “clap back” songs and I completely agree! Seems like a lot of people misunderstand Swift and say that, when she puts out songs like this, she’s “playing the victim”.
If you’re paying attention, though, it’s actually the opposite. She’s not saying, “Poor me, there’s nothing I can do.” She’s very proactive with these songs. If she feels she’s been truly wronged, misunderstood, etc. she writes a song that takes aim, fires, and hits its target with incredible accuracy. She’s not a passive victim, she responds and defends herself.
It’s a chef’s kiss that she also has a sense of humor and is willing to poke a little fun at herself. I think that may be another area where she’s misunderstood by some people. They hear songs like Shake It Off, Blank Space and Look What You Made Me Do and think she’s being totally and completely serious. They don’t see the bits of self-aware, self-deprecating humor in them. (Although, to be fair, I think watching the videos helps a lot in picking up on that. If you just hear the songs, it could be harder to catch that.)
Also, to be fair, a song/video like LWYMMD is, simultaneously, satirical and dead serious. To me, it’s one of the things that make Swift an incredible artist and fascinating person. 😊

This video is such a wonderful example of what this song is saying. No matter what some people are doing, we have people around us to lean into. Just like the particular dance style in the video requires every dancer to rely on and trust the others to pull off the moves to make it look great. No matter what we go through in the dance of life, we need people we can rely on and trust, just as we need to be reliable and trustworthy. Being an honest, loving, kind person won't solve all the world's problems, but it will make the world so much better.

She has some very empowering, reassuring and positive songs! I guess we have a fixation with suffering.
Some of her more optimistic songs: "Long Live", "22", "Begin Again", "Clean", "You're In Love", "New Romantics", "Slut!", "Now That We Don't Talk", "I Forgot That You Existed", "Lover", "You Need To Calm Down", "the last great american dynasty", "invisible string", "long story short", "closure", "Bejeweled", and pretty much all of her album Reputation (which is ironic because it's the one where she embraced a darker, tougher persona, yet it's her most romantic album to date).

Not in a dysfunctional way that ends up with restraining orders or anything "quirky", just in a "I appreciate your insights and how relatable you can make standing up for the good things feel; it takes away some of the scariness of doing that, especially right now in the world" kind of way. So thanks, and please keep doing what you do, Dad dances included!

Im a fan of hers and this was her most drastic musical change, so I was weirded out but it became a song that made me feel better during depression, when my energy was low I was like ok shake this off, she always got hated for not being a good dancer so I love this music video, the art of being yourself ❤

I love that Taylor dances the entire video. I heard it was inspired bc she was at a music awards show dancing and having fun in the audience. The next day, the tabloids were saying how awful a dancer she was. I think this was the last straw for Taylor. Thus she wrote Shake It Off. she won’t allow haters to dim her light.

The song that actually made me into a Swiftie is "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together", which reminded me so much of the courtship my oldest sister had in the late 1970s, that it gave me a flashback of her ex-boyfriend and new boyfriend getting into a fight. But my sister is the kind of person who decided to "Shake It Off" and move forward.

Thanks for doing this video, “Jonno”! I’m a new therapist and found Alanis Morissette and Taylor tend to have their therapy evident in their lyrics. Taylor won me over with “Mean” and then “Shake It Off”. Such needed messages. Keep at it, I love watching you guys! Gonna go watch your new “Inside Out” one now 🤍

Only 1 "n" 😉. And yaay hello freshly joined new therapist! How lovely to have you here. Can't (realistically) have enough therapists in society. Hope you take it slow and take very good care of yourself. I'm serious PLEASE do. Ppl will hope for you to stick around for as long as you possibly can. 😋

If there was anything I'd hate, then that would be the part of you getting hate, Jono! Gosh there's ppl who really mess up and make it hard not to feel offended, but you're such a sweet n joyful person (with a looot of life-induced-maturity-internal-type-of-darkness lol, hi pal!!! 😁Makes your choices to be kind even more epic!). People can be very rude and dysregulated for sure.
Which is why I'm extra thankful you're out here for us, against these odds.
That song is really fun and I like your breakdown. Cause my brain obsesses over the music and voice sounds so much I rarely can process lyrics. But when you stop the song and summarize it, I, too, can finally know what the lyrics are about 😂Thank you for that!

Love that your looking at Taylor Swifts songs! I believe that alot of issues would be fixed regarding pleasing people aspects if people learned boundaries through yourself and others as well as consent. I was a people pleaser growing up but I had to learn to be me through a hard situation. Bullying is never ok but you also don't have to participate or even take it to heart on what people say which is the whole point of the Taylor Swift song. You see Taylor being with amazing dancers, she did that on purpose and not learn anything so she can be thrown in. She wanted to be different to show the point of the video.

Hi! I really enjoy your content :-) I actually found Mended Light through Cinema Therapy, so for me both channels are closely related. Admittedly, I sometimes have to avoid certain videos from both channels because there are times I know I need to process some things and have a good cry, but I just don't want to deal with it and if I watch specific content on either channel I might get emotional against my will, lol. That said, everyone on both channels - Jonathan, Alicia and Alan, whomever is editing (sorry if I spelled any names incorrectly)...all of you have helped me through some tough times in ways you'll never know. So glad I came across your content here on RUclips.
I actually remember watching this same reaction in a video that was from a couple years ago. I was just wondering...is there any specific reason that you uploaded the same reaction again? I still watched and liked the video, no hate at all (if there was I'm sure you'd shake it off *wink wink*), but when I clicked on this video I kind of thought that it was going to include different insights and comments, like maybe "this, this and this has happened since the last time I reacted to Shake It Off, here's something that I picked up on this time that hits differently now or that I didn't think of last time." I don't know about anyone else, but I'd actually love to see a new reaction for this video. Or maybe Taylor Swift's Anti-Hero video.
Anyway, you are appreciated. Please keep doing what you're doing...because WE need YOUR light!

Thanks for mentioning Star Wars in this. Because even though I am a very recent Swiftie, I've been a Warsie since the late summer of 1981 - when I was nine years old. I eventually got a "hater" or two for being a Warsie by the time I was 12, and I will definitely get "haters" for becoming a Swiftie. But there is one passion I have that would never get me "haters", and that is my longtime fascination with airplanes.

Just FYI: Since you’ve seen the video, you will love these behind-the-scenes clip from the making of the music video (8 short videos, about 3 minutes/each). The dancing is both hysterical (Taylor) and amazing (the pros she hired for the video). (And, BTW, a lot of people don’t realize the range of Taylor’s music - different styles and genres. If you’ve only heard a few of her pop radio hits, then you are in for some big surprises if you listen to some of her deeper discography.)

While I have strong difference in opinion on political policy and philosophy, that's a persuasive discussion that must occur in a democratic society.
When you start actively trying to strip people of their civil rights that's a different matter. I'm specifically referring to the party that does everything in its power to prevent people from voting. While I love neither party, the one party will at least allow itself to be voted out of power rather than doing everything its power to cling to it.
Also using trans people as a political tool is hateful and unhinged. I'm never going to get it, but biologically speaking the trans experience has likely been around since biological sex has been a thing and therefore is older than humanity by several hundred million years.
When you whip people into a violent fervor over harmless things because they find them strange and uncomfortable its a line too far.

    1. Trek and Wars, both awesome! 2. Jono, would you be open to changing your view on twerking? Yes, it’s a lot of booty but it really depends in the context of how it is used. For example, Lizzo did a routine where she twerked, sang, and played the flute. I thought it was a very fun performance and a win for female empowerment performance . Conversely, I saw a performance where two female artists twerked on each other in a way that could only be interpreted as sexual. Here, Taylor’s twerking dancers were meant to add humor. Just food for thought. ❤ love your videos!

It's really interesting to compare 'shake off' to 'mean'. Few years earlier she was quite jaded about the haters, calling them names etc. During 1989 era she clearily moved past it, and just shakes it off. I love it for her :)

I dunno, I don’t think Mean is really calling folks names. I think it fits right in here - she’s saying she’s gonna move past the mean critics, she’s gonna go do things, live other places, keep living life, and all the haters are gonna do is stay where they are, being small and mean. Mean is just “haters gonna hate” in more words. 😉

Everyone hates on this song because it's so overplayed, but at its core it has a great message. Clever writing and a great bop. It's not my favorite Taylor song by any means, but it's a glitter gel pen anthem for sure.
