FYI Randy Hansen met Eddie Van Halen at the Whiskey A Go Go in 1978. Eddie saw the Floyd Rose article in the 1978 Guitar Player magazine. I was incorrect in the video (they did not meet in Seattle). Watch Randy discuss this in this video: ruclips.net/video/BgIyHft9CRk/видео.html

Wasn't the Randy Hansen article in Guitar Player, July 1979? I think it was Mick Ralphs on the cover. I may be wrong..And Roger Fisher of Heart... He knew Randy Hansen (Seattle guys) and can be seen in the December issue of GP, 1979 playing a tele with a Floyd. Looks like he's playing a large stadium without shoes. Looks like summertime. Yup, we all love the mystery surrounding THE Holy Grail.

Excellent note on Randy’s use of the strobe tuner to demonstrate the FRT-1!

As a side note, the first time Eddie ever used the Floyd Rose in public was June 14, 1979 in Brussels, Belgium. As you’ve noted, the first and for a time the only guitar Eddie had a Floyd Rose system on was indeed the yellow and black striped Charvel body with the Boogie Bodies “10th fret bloodstain”/“knotty headstock” neck.

Indeed! What I've been trying to figure out is when exactly Ed got his first FRT-1......approximately. Summer of '79 he's seen with it. I have the article of when it was in guitar player in 1978. I good reference point would be when Randy Hansen played at the Whiskey A Go Go. Another thing I forgot to mention is Roger Fischer of the band Heart supposedly got an early version of the FRT-1....another mystery.

@@SoundsofTime It is difficult if not impossible to nail down the exact date that Eddie took delivery or got his first FRT-1 Floyd in his hands, but for me the important thing was to figure out when he first used it, and that was indeed on that date in Belgium. Then the first use of the Floyd on a Van Halen record was on the 'Women and Children First' album...the instrumental portions of which were recorded prior to December of 1979. Vocals and final mixes were done after January of 1980.

@@SoundsofTime Yup, Roger Fisher is really interesting in this mystery. He could have had a very, very early one.

Brad Gillis says (depending on the interview) Eddie got the first, Santana or Neil Schon got second and he got the third.... it's bizarre that Eddie had so much to do with the first Floyd's then he goes over to musician who uses gotoh. I mean it's not bizarre the I did that, I went from having 3 floyd originals to 3 gotohs but it's because I got tired of losing the little brass pieces under the saddles. Nah. I'll stick with the gotohs.
