@@BrettBolzenthal he basically gets the strings on and in tune, but didn’t stretch them while unlocked at nut. He said that was key. I have a Kramer F6000 still. It was my first guitar with a Floyd, and never goes out out tune. I was wondering why all of the newer Floyds are garbage, now I'm starting to figure it out.
Exactly- and they did NOT explain his tuning process…who is locking down that nut at the top…because if that locking plate moves under the screw…you go sharp on one string and flat on the other….
The replica has some stock Fernandes pickups while Brad prefers a Duncan JB in the bridge and some Duncan high output strat pups in the middle and neck. I remember for a stretch he and Watson endorsed PJ Marx active pickups back in the 80s about the time when they were both Hamer endorsers. I tried some guitars with PJ Marx and they were very good. But I prefer passive pups, always DiMarzios like the Tone Zone, Super Distortion, etc.
Brad is the reason my first guitar was red with a tremolo. It was a brand new when I bought it (can't remember if it was in '85 or '86) MIJ Ibanez Roadstar II (RS-440). I beat the hell out of the tremolo trying to copy Brad (think the outro to "Touch Of Madness") and that thing never went out of tune.
Brad is great. Saw him with Ozzy and he nailed that gig. I have an old USA Hamer with a German made Schaller Floyd, and that guitar simply won't go out of tune.
I remember seeing Brad at the Crown and Anchor in Alameda back in the’80’s when he was playing in the Alameda All Stars with Danny Chauncey back when wireless was just coming out, and followed him (as the band was playing) out to the parking lot then leaned on a car and ripped a solo while sharing a joint I had just lit. 😂 This was when I knew this dude was going to go far. Brad thanks for the memories when music was still just fun 😁🇺🇸👍
When your stunt double looks like the movie star but you can still tell, side note Brad's original guitar was part of the inspiration for my building my main guitar back in the 80s , also painted at an auto body shop and has gray primer as well
Without fine tuners at the bridge, when you lock down the nut, the locks push the string sharp from where you tuned using the tuning pegs. I guess Brad is compensating for this before locking down the nut? Great interview!
Used to see pic's of Brad playing that guitar in the 80's. It's beautiful in a very rugged way. I bought my first guitar in '87. It was an Ibanez RG in the same color scheme.
Wow! I remember reading about that guitar in Guitar Player Magazine after your first album! I’m glad she’s still around. I think I read that you got a tremelo from Floyd Roses garage .
I have an old IBZ RG570, made in Japan, with an old rusty Licensed Under Floyd Rose that WILL NOT go outta tune. Even after being in a flight case in storage for over five years, still in tune.
I bought a custom made Dan Torres Strat made from Zebra Wood, made in 1978 with original Floyd Rose and EMG pickups (18v) Even the pick guard is Zebra wood. It's amazing. They don't go out of tune until a string breaks...
I have a 1992 Ibanez rg450dxlb that stays in tune just as well. Dive bomb until the strings just droop and back in tune. The trem is called the lo trs trem ii
The Lo Pro Edge's are FANTASTIC! I love them so much that when I wore out the Edge 2 in my RG471 FM I replaced it with the Lo Pro Edge. Bridge is worth more than the guitar! Ha!
My Edge Zero II works just as good., except I could beat on it longer & stays right intune. Best trem Ive ever used ever. Tried the Spyder, Floyds, German Floyds, FR2 Kaylers etc etc etc. I dont love the guitar but the fact the Trem is Phenominal, I will prolly keep it forever
Pretty cool that you would cover this. I read that years ago when Brad said they never go out of tune. That is not my general experience when dealing with Floyd Rose lol.
He said that about the original 25 Floyd made. I have to say I had an Epi LP with an FR 1000 and once properly setup it held it's tune rather well. The others I've had, well.......
How does he keep it in tune after clamping down the locking nut? Usually just the act of tightening the locking nut will cause strings to go sharp and flat.
Brad is one of my hero's.. Floyd sells these now and I"m going to have one put on a strat I just put together.. As soon as I can find someone to install it.. I probably could, but I want to make sure it's done right.. I saw Brad with Ozzy.. I had tickets to the Lousiville KY show which was supposed to have RR's. Of course, we all know he passed, and so they delayed the show like two or three weeks if I remember right.. You could either get your money back or just hang on to your tickets which is what I did and then I saw the show and Brad killed it.. I mean he really did a great job.. Considering he didn't have much time to learn all those songs and he did a killer killer killer solo that was so damn good.. Anyway, I had to comment.. I'm 62 and I've seen him and he's so good. I also saw him with Night Ranger and that was good, but I liked the Ozzy show better.. 🙂 Regards from south central Indiana. Tim
When I was in 11th grade Ozzy was coming to town on his Speak of the Devil tour and I was REALLY wanting to see Brad Gillis since he was on the live album... Our local chief of police was trying to get Ozzy banned because he "is a bad influence on the youth of our town..." My stepbrother and I made these "Ozzy for Police Chief" campaign buttons and Ozzy's press saw them and we got backstage passes and met Ozzy and Jake E. Lee and the rest of the band! SUPER nice guys. Was sad to not get to see Brad but was stoked for the rest. Brad's multi-finger taps and hammer-ons are out of this world.
All of us mere mortals go through some kind of living hell trying to keep our tremolos in tune, even when we have quality ones like the original Floyd Rose. At some point it puts us in the fetal position completely in despair and crying our eyes out. There must be some kind of magic happening with his that is supernatural.
Love Brad Gillis and Night Ranger! Saw the early in their career. Any guidance for those of us nobodies who want a more stable FR than the FR Special? Thanks.
Yeah it seems like you really just need to give your strings a good stretch before tightening the nut down in order to achieve some solid tuning stability 😯👍🎸🔥
Dive the bar, then bend the G or low E string, then play a big chord without touching the bar. That’s the test for tuning stability that no one ever does. Lots of guitars with non-locking trems can come back in tune perfectly after using the bar.
You have to block the vibro behind the back plate so it is level and does not move. You then tune with normal tuners at top. Next remove the block and it will immediately go out of tune. You use a screwdriver to tighten or loosen the screws on the claw until the strings are perfect once more. Now you have the tension from the strings and the springs leveled out. You will stay in tune VERY well unless a string is about to break or comes loose at the bridge. No magic there just a better way to set up a string change. I do this to all my guitars none go out of tune unless the blades are chipped or worn off. Then I just get a half round file grind them to shape and lube with paraffin wax and oil back on the guitar! If the posts look worn I replace them for about $20 with FR parts from their web site. I also melt paraffin wax on the springs, claw and block as well as the top locking nut area then give some light oil. This makes them damn near silent and a much smoother tooling.
Intrigued, bewildered, amazed, ....so how does it continue to last this long? Does the edge need to be filed over time? Graphite lubrication? Just how does it stay in tune?!?!?
Yeah, Brad became known for playing a Fernandes Floyd Rose #3 would be extremely primitive & like Steve Vai said “before Floyd’s got fine tuners they were a living hell”

I also saw him with Night Ranger and that was good, but I liked the Ozzy show better.. 🙂
Regards from south central Indiana.
Tim
Hey Tim! Thanks for sharing that story and the info on that new Floyd reissue, we will have to look into those! 🙌🎸
He did some bad-ass playing on Speak of the Devil.
I got to hang out with Brad years ago and he is a great guy and a great guitarist.
Brad you are the best!!
Guy is such an amazing guitar player. His NR material is incredible but that Ozzy album was freaking magic!
I hear you on that! That Ozzy album was menacingly shredsational! 🙌🎸🔥 Brads a living legend 🎸🎸🎸
back in the days 80s at Del Mar fairground in San Diego Ca, w/Stphen Wolf -
f jamming never forget !
Thanks.
If “speak of the devil” was the only album he ever played on, that would be enough for me!
That was such an AMAZING album! I wish we could get it on music streaming services😭 It’s hard to find it on CD too!
Saw them a couple years back when they came to Alaska. It was one heckuva show.
Brads my favorite guitarist...why i play... completely jealous someone got to play that guitar! Meant everything to me
Legend.
It really comes down to taking the time to stretch your strings after installing a new set. Stretch your strings until they don't go out of tune.
Good point! I got a string change coming up soon, I’ll give them a good stretch 👊😎👍🎸🎸
Yes and no. Most of the new Licensed Floyds are garbage, sadly.
My favorite part of the guitar is the Raider logo on the headstock. RAAAIIIIDERRRSS!!!!!
I agree! So badass!🙌🎸🎸🎸
I have my Ibanez from the 80s the original floyd rose on it, once the strings are played for a bit it stays in tune no matter how much you abuse it
Yeah it seems like you really just need to give your strings a good stretch before tightening the nut down in order to achieve some solid tuning stability 😯👍🎸🔥
Brad sure loves that Strat, no doubt about that.
Dive the bar, then bend the G or low E string, then play a big chord without touching the bar. That’s the test for tuning stability that no one ever does. Lots of guitars with non-locking trems can come back in tune perfectly after using the bar.
I love that guy!
Gillis is an underrated guitar legand !
Saw Brad Gillis play with Ozzy after the sudden passing of Randy Rhoads. He saved that tour…!
All you need is locking tuners, a good graph tec nut and a Wilkenson VS100 and you will stay in tune
Its like having no fine tuners, makes it extremely solid
Jeez Ralph Malph mucho take it easy on that thing, Donnie Most is goin off!
I have one of those Floyd rose bridges from the early eighties with no fine tuners.
That’s pretty awesome! They are super hard to come by these days 🎸🎸
I have a 1980 Kramer Focus 3000 with original Floyd Rose and it ain’t going anywhere.
Brother, my main take away from this video is, you look fantastic! Blessings🙏
How did they add a fret? New neck or fretboard? Cool either way!
Eventually the strings wear and they go out of tune. But with new strings all broken in the Floyd is a beast. Any Floyd really.
Your one of my favorite players
Thats my kind of shredder axe!! I would LOVE to get my hands on one of those and Brad Gillis is such a badass! I have a very similar guitar, ESP LTD Cult 86. I just love that original super strat appeal. It’s not nostalgia because I didn’t exist for a lot of this stuff. I’m curious to see if I subscribe by the end of this video.
Edit: I did subscribe
Thanks so much for subscribing and dude . . . I freaking LOVE those ESP LTD Cult ‘86 guitars! You NEVER see those out in the wild! I remember spotting one at the Sam Ash in LA a few years back and I was getting that gear itch & almost bought it 😜🎸
@@MastersofShred Thank you! Oh man it is really something. I came across it while looking for a Jason Becker-like guitar. I immediately swapped the Floyd Rose Special for a German OFR and it is PERFECT! This is an amazing channel and I’m going to go straight into your Reb Beach videos. I’m so glad you’re doing this.
@@visionop8 Thanks man! I appreciate it! 🙏 Yeah, I would have done the same thing, those Floyd Specials are pretty terrible, I hate seeing them on $1k guitars, they could at least go for the Floyd 1000’s😜 My brother actually just scored a Ying Yang Jason Becker Kiesel . . . OMG . . . It’s incredible! You can’t go wrong with any of his signature axes🙌🎸🎸
I think the interviewer wanted to talk about his " GEAR".... not his gear 😅
I assure it was about his guitar “gear”. Hope that didn’t get your hopes down 🤦♂️
*_Well Speak of the Devil! It's Badass Brad Gillis himself!_*
🤘
😫
🎸
Brads a beast ❤
Actually, Randy Hanson got the 1st one,as he was doing his Hendrix tribute shows w strat/ basically the 'test lab, as Floyd would be at his shows, refined the design/ physics of his innovative invention.
Brad Gillis = Legend
Brad is so awesome! Jesus, what a shredder! What pickups were in the original guitar? Is that an EMG in the most recent one?
Love that guitar strap.
2 of Eddie's techs describe how to set up a standard trem the way eddie used to. If you do it correctly, you will have nearly floyd results master builder john cruz shows you some tricks, too
No kidding?! 😯 We will have to definitely look into this! 🎸🎸🎸
The guitar he is playing here is NOT the guitar you are playing at the hotel.
Maybe. But he actually said I played "this guitar".
Good eyes. I saw it too
The guitar is why I play Brad Gillis
Brad’s MONSTER playing on “Speak..” is the most killer playing on ANY Sabbath album, let alone live. Especially considering how much time he had to prep, he just destroyed the licks on that album…especially his feedback control, and his taste in lick structure and delivery. Actually, ALL of the musicians on Speak of the Devil were at their absolute best. ❤❤❤
To be fair, my Edge doesn't go out of tune either (because I learnt how to set it up properly the hard way). It's been a thing for decades lol,
I have a Charvel Model 2 I can do that with. Btw your work on "Speak of the Devil" rules!
living legend
Couldn’t agree with you more! 🙌🎸🎸
I have probably the most accurate 5150 relic there is and it has a 1983/84 floyd with fine tuners that never goes out of tune. I think the 37mm brass block has a lot to do with it, but there is truth to the 80s floyds holding their tune much better.
Set it up right, install good strings, tune em, stretch em, dive bomb, pull up, stretch again and yours can hold tuning too.
