When Jeff died last year I looked at my albums, maybe 40 I have left from the 70s. I still had Blow by blow, Orange and Wired. He always seemed to have great musicians playing with him.
I asked my dad once who he thought was the best guitar player and without hesitation he said Jeff Beck, when I asked him why Beck and not some of the other usual names he just said “cause I’ve seen him play”. I get it now many years later.
Uli Jon Roth, Robin Trower, and Leslie West always hit me on an emotional level with their playing. Roth is probably the best technically of these three but Trower and West felt like they plugged their guitars into their hearts.

A lot of great guitarists. I'm glad he mentioned Beck and Zappa, two of my favorites. Of course Hendrix. But another guitarist who I think was as good as Hendrix was Johnny Winter. He wasn't as creative as Jimi. Nobody was. But he was very fluid and he made things look very effortless.

Glen was more of a technician than an innovator. He doesn't really have one single defining sound or style. Sort of like Steve Lukather. That's why they were both very "in demand" session players in their heyday. They both could play any style they were asked to play.
I highly respect Alice's analysis and I agree, but in reality, Jimi is in a league of his own, encapsulating all the nuances and qualities she attributed to the other guitarists.
Surprising he left out the best, Carlos Santana. Roy Clark was much better than Depp too. Also an under-rated guitarist Mark Farner of " Grand Funk " . Their last album " Born to Die " is an unknown masterpiece, Marks playing and singing is unbeatable. The album is a mix of rock, Soul, Jazz, Metal and Funk. it's brilliant. .

Alice Cooper has been a musician/performer for a very long time, so he has great taste in guitar players. I feel the same way. I really don't care for instrumental music and that's what he's mostly known for. Other than when he had Rod Stewart singing for him, and his time with the Yardbirds, he doesn't have a singer to give the songs a voice and lyrics. He's a great play but a subpar songwriter in my opinion.

The worst is someone saying who their favorite drummers are and if Neil Peart isn't on it, then people take offense and say the list holds no weight. It's as if they don't grasp the difference between a list of favorites, a list of best players, and a list of influences. As a drummer who is into Black sabbath and punk rock, Neil has zero influence on me and while I like some Rush songs, I wouldn't put them or him in my top 100 favorite bands or drummers, but if someone asks me who the the best rock drummers are, he's in the top 3. I'm not a huge Van Halen fan, so, he doesn't make the favorites or most influential list but in my opinion, he's the best rock guitarist ever.

Definitely Zappa, the most creative of all. Then Hendrix. I know they all kneel in front of Jeff Beck. He might be a great technician, but his music is somewhat soulless, too sterile. This goes for Page too, his music is bombastic and often - due to his drugabuse - it becomes formless when he loses control over the instrument. Brian May is a great band player but not a guitar virtuoso in his own right. Finally, there aren't too many 'greatest guitarists' IMO.

Definitely Zappa, the most creative of all. Then Hendrix. I know they all kneel in front of Jeff Beck. He might be a great technician, but his music is somewhat soulless, too sterile. This goes for Page too, his music is bombastic and often - due to his drugabuse - it becomes formless when he loses control over the instrument. Brian May is a great band player but not a guitar virtuoso in his own right. Finally, there aren't too many 'greatest guitarists' IMO.

So many great guitar players but Jeff Beck is out of his head great. RIP Jeff. Page definitely had that great sense of drama and matched it with brilliant chops and composition even though his skills seemed to decline as he aged; Becks only increased. And Zappa, like Hendrix, paved his own way and no one ever came close to sounding like him. Stevie Ray did channel Hendrix but no one did Zappa. Depp? Really? From what I"ve heard it's skill without musicality. Will Vinnie Vincent be on Alice's short list? Brian May, a musicians musician. What other guitarist could have given life to Queen like he did?
