As someone who grew up near Detroit, I used to see Cooper from 1970-1973 or so. His band was as tight as anyone's band, and his guitarists were great themselves
The scary thing about Hendrix was he could play both ways round. Left and right handed. I guess he sacrificed the chile to the voodoo. A top 5 is ludicrous by this point. Hendrix, Blackmore, Vai, Van Halen, Malmsteen, Beck, Page, Marvin, Richards, Slash, Rheinhardt, Johnson, SRV, Rodgers, Petrucci etc have all brought something. All time is an overused term.
I asked my dad once who he thought was the best guitar player and without hesitation he said Jeff Beck, when I asked him why Beck and not some of the other usual names he just said “cause I’ve seen him play”. I get it now many years later.
Uli Jon Roth, Robin Trower, and Leslie West always hit me on an emotional level with their playing. Roth is probably the best technically of these three but Trower and West felt like they plugged their guitars into their hearts.
Even Alice Cooper is wrong about believing certain guitar players are the best because it all really just comes down to what do you prefer. In the case of Blackmoor yeah he's really great but I prefer Page's style more but it doesn't mean either one is so-called better
Glen was more of a technician than an innovator. He doesn't really have one single defining sound or style. Sort of like Steve Lukather. That's why they were both very "in demand" session players in their heyday. They both could play any style they were asked to play.
