Niki Lauda vs James Hunt | A Formula One Rivalry

- Niki Lauda's heroic return from life-threatening injury made him a global sporting superstar, but for Formula One fans it was his lightning speed, supreme skills and utter domination which, as much as his bravery, that made him a Grand Prix Hero. Lauda's rivalry with english driver James Hunt was captivating but there was always immense respect between the two of them.

Archive race action, rarely-seen testing footage and period interviews with Lauda himself recall the highs land lows of a stunning and inspirational career, including film of his very first Grand Prix outing in his native Austria in 1971. Although results with March in 1972 and BRM the following year were disappointing, Lauda did enough to attract the attention of Ferrari, and a race seat for 1974.
With commentary by Sir Stirling Moss, we enjoy action from those early, challenging days, and Lauda's move to the front with the Prancing Horse -- including his first Grand Prix win. There's also action from Monaco, Zolder, Anderstorp and Zandvoort as Lauda dominates the 1975 season on his way to the World Championship.
There's race footage from the dramatic 1976 season, including the fiery Nurburging crash which it was feared at the time would claim the champion's life. However, Lauda was racing again just six weeks later, and we see his brave return at Monza, as well as the Japanese Grand Prix where Lauda, still battling with his injuries, lost the championship by a single point.
More amazing than his rapid return to action, was the speed with which he regained his world-beating form, and race action from throughout 1977 records his dominant journey to a second World Championship. His switch to Brabham for 1978 saw the first stage of his Grand Prix career fade out, although there were unforgettable moments -- including the Swedish victory in the controversial BT46B 'Fan Car'!
In addition, we join Lauda for a 1976 Ferrari test session and five years later as he comes out of retirement to test for McLaren at Donington. Footage from the McLaren session provides a fascinating insight into the decisive moment which saw Lauda return to racing and, in 1984, score his third Formula One World Championship, cementing his place as a true Grand Prix Hero.

Bruhl and Hemsworth played their characters unbelievably well.
Mike Hamilton except Hemsworth is far, far better looking than Hunt deserved.
Audfile
true. However, if Thor can't be Hunt, no one can xD Ain't no actor better suited for that role.
shit i realised now he is thor ...
cubomania3 exactly what I said. Handsome just means uglier in your example. yes, he's uglier than Hemsworth, by a fair margin.
If we were back in 2014 and if I was on The Academy Voting Committee dreaming here but Bruhl would’ve been on my first Ballot for Lead for his role as Lauda. Hemsworth would’ve been there as well in the Supporting Category as Hunt.
The Academy Awards were stacked that year as well. After Rush was released in September the rest followed and it got lost.
Holy crap, Daniel Bruhl as Lauda has to be one of the closest acting portrayals of a real person in the history of cinema.
Agreed. It is a damn shame he wasn't even nominated for an Oscar.
I know right....The actress who portrays Marlene Lauda looks just like her also.
Side topic: I never knew that a 6 wheels care existed until I watched Rush.
Couldn't agree more. After watching the film and real life footage of Lauda, I can no longer watch one without automatically thinking of the other. Credit should go where credit is due. Hemsworth is not that far off of Hunt either. If he wasn't already such a well known star for his 'Thor' portrayal, he probably would be getting similar praise for his portrayal and acting as well. Both men were well cast. But Bruhl took it a step beyond.
Yes I agree. Perfect casting!!
Thor was fine as Hunt too.
Man, the actor in the Rush was like a twin of the real Niki Lauda. It's like an actor is born just to fill in this single movie where he fits perfectly, and i've only seen a very few movies where they fit like that. Not necessarily a look alike though.
Lauda had input and actually helped Bruhl get the accent right and stuff. :p
Daniel Brühl for Oscar!
Pece17
Unfortunately that`s not going to happen, because Daniel Brühl is not an american and this movie is about F1 not Nascar or Indy, but i want he wins, he deserves!
even the actress that made the part of his wife.
Re-enact? So you wanted someone to actually literally get all burnt up and such? Make all the crashes completely real, all the damage to the drivers real? Every little part of the race real driving?
Rip Niki Lauda. More than a legend in Formula 1 ❤
I personally have always found Niki Lauda an incredibly refreshing person. He is direct, honest and isn't afraid to speak his mind. I admire people who don't feel the need to pander to the media or speak only opinions which are popular with public opinion. He may make people mad, but I like it. I found him to be the more interesting, admirable person in Rush. The bravery he demonstrated in getting back in his car after such a horrific accident is just mind-boggling.
strellasmith777 uuua
LAUDA learned the lesson, Airton Senna warned F1! Lauda warned F1! Lauda in my book is a role model. Follow speed,! But don't get caught with the curves! (life, profession, skills)

Daniel Bruhl did such a fantastic job.
Rush was awesome. Daniel Brühl was perfect as Niki Lauda.
The film was probably the most spot on casting I've ever seen. Niki looks and sounds exactly like he does in real life!
Joseph Purdue BABu
Even tge actress playing Lauda's wife looks like his actual wife.
RIP Niki Lauda, James Hunt & Sterling Moss who did this commentary. RIP Racing Legends.
excellent quality for 1976! :)
What a hero Lauda is. Very impressive man and an inspiration.
God when he talks it's like I'm hearing Daniel Brühl! lol Great acting, Daniel.
Niki is so inspiring.
R.I.P. Niki. The F1 community miss you...
THANK YOU CHAMPION!!
Ron Howard is a genius. I cannot believe how close the resemblance is between Niki Lauda and Daniel Brühl (the actor who plays him in "Rush")!
exactly!
Daniel Brühl is a quality actor, he was great as Niki Lauda, and he was also great in Inglorious Basterds and Civil War :)
the best casting ever
Chicproducer ffffffffffffff
Actually, Brühl doesn’t resemble him, but he’s a brilliant actor and truly became him forvRush.
He inspired me to get back to the wheel after the crash I had. Mentally is a huge problem and forcing yourself is even harder.
Nina Williams did you t bone a car while texting on your iPhone 6?
Audfile Its genuinely pitiful that you even edited that comment yet still ended up with such a weak attempt at a joke.
Only few words to describe Lauda: LEGEND & HERO.
Rush brought me here. I love the twist of the film, which is you go in thinking you are going to root for the cocky underdog playboy against the boring soulless Austrian guy, but in the end you come out thinking what a fucking incredible competitor Lauda was and have nothing but sheer admiration for him.
lauda has never been the most charming person ever in his life. but - somehow - i learn to like his answers to interviewers. unfortunately james hunt already died. niki always talked about him as a friend.
I wonder how he managed to get back in form this quickly. After having a crash you must be scared in the curves and hesitating. Still he was so good only 40 days after the crash.
Because he is mentally a strong man, that is all. I really admire him. Very professional guy.
43 days*
What got him that driver's seat in the first place.! It was an extreme hunger and desire to win, to not be beaten by yourself nor anyone else. That's how.
You do not attempt to venture into a boxing ring without a desire to fight. That's how racing was for the most part in that era. You raced to win no matter what.
Daniel Brühl's performance in the movie is actually uncanney, Jesus...
Daniel Bruhl was perfect! The way to talk, the way he moved, just perfect!
Open letter to Hollywood. Please make more REAL movies like RUSH. That would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.
they should make Rush 2, with Senna vs Prost as the story
The Arcadinator YES
It's a shame, not a lot of big sporting rivalries anymore, just money
Agree!
And put UK in WW II.
Lauda is a remarkable man. I've just watched the film 'Rush' it was fantastic, so lucky to survive and compete so shortly after such horrific injuries.
6 wheels ...strange to imagine that now
Lauda is an all time F1 hero. Period.
aryton senna is better
they never raced each other and/or in the same time. so you really can't compare them. also: who gives a shit?
you ovbiously know nothing. senna did race with niki
and he smashed him
in monacco
Great movie RUSH I just saw it as of now!
Wonderful work by team "Rush" on depicting those formula 1 legends! Hats off to Daniel bruhl and Chris Hemsworth.
Lauda has a much more adolescent voice here than in our current days 2013.
Two of the greatest drivers ever. Their rivalry is what made me love F1
Fantastic quality footage
Nikki Is someone very wise and so inspiring, he teaches us not to give up easily or at all but on the other hand James Hunt could be a legend because he was a good racer but he knew what he wanted "which he achieved" but living life was his 1st thing. I find it cool
If James Hunt was alive today, that would have be really great. Two legendary drivers watching themselves on big screen sitting next to each other during world premiere.
omg... now when you think about it .......... but i think thats what makes the story line so unique! and it also brings up a question.. who had the better of it.. james hunt or nicki lauda.
Indeed :)
Niki Lauda, my hero in F1
Oscar should of been awarded...
The Road & Track article in 1976 portrayed a far different account
of the accident than the movie. Lauda was standing, his helmet off,
and edema had his head swollen to the size of a basket ball.
"How do I look?" He asked.
"Fine", they lied.
He then fell over, unconscious.
That was the R&T account anyway.
Bro I’m shocked when I heard young Lauda talk I was like oh my God Daniel but then I was like wait Niki I mean Daniel I mean oh my God ... ugh rush was so amazing
This guy looked and sounded life the real Niki Lauda. Great performance
How great would it have been to get footage of Niki in his youth asking "Are you using magnesium parts?"
Daniel Bruhl has done great job potraying Niki Lauda! Focusing on how technical was Niki with the cars in his racing carrer!
RIVALRY and vengeance of sporters, is that extra, higher dimension of sometimes talented and real perfectionists in that ultimate battles in all sports
Daniel Brühl did an amazing job as Niki Lauda. He even got some of the overbite thing going on! I've seen a lot of interviews and no one's mentioned it, but I can't help but notice it lol.
I'm sure that Niki Lauda and James Hunt were representing the future and the present (or the past) of F1 motorsport. It's not about liking one or the other, rather than understanding the way these two guys were viewing the world! But above all, the truth is that they both respected each other and I think we should do the same...
love the thumbnail
Rest In Peace Niki. Remembered forever.
May they meet again in heaven.
The fact that this is narrated by one of the greatest British Formula 1 drivers of his era, who sadly had to end his career because of an accident, makes this even more interesting
Back in the days when another driver got out and helped the bloke who was injured.
Great movie
Niki, such a hero and legend :)
We need him as F1 sport director... Like he said a few years ago:
What we need in F1 is 1200 hp (which would be a V8 turbo or even a V10,
which means great sound again), huge tyres and huge wings because no
more little boys would be able to jump in a young age straight from
Formula 3 to 1 and being able to succeed!
He even talked to Bernie about that, but Bernie is even though he did a lot for the sport in the
end a used car sales man and not a real F1 Racer like Lauda.
And that is what we really need in the F1 Management more F1 Racers that now what the fans want.
Bernie even complains now that Liberty Media focuses to much on improving the
sport for the fans, because F1 is a business and that is how it should
be treated.
He clearly was and is in denial that without the fans the
sport would be dead in a matter of time and that no amount of money and
support from any rich family (Bahrain etc.) could change that on the
long run! Im so glad the dark emperor of F1 is gone!
What bike is that nearby the Umleitung Nürbirgring sign?
What a men! What a cars! (Rush bring me here)
Legend
Isso que era F1, em que o piloto tinha que ser bom e não só o engenheiro, velhos tempos não era nascido mas eu imagino a emoção que era nessa época haha
I Love Nikki Lauda!!
dat 6wheeler :D
cool car! Now in F1 cars are all the same -_-''
valenesco45 yeah, it's a shame. The whole F1 thing is stupid these days. Too much rules... I'd rather watch at least ten year old F1
Lauda is quickly becoming my favorite driver.
Niki Lauda and Lewis Hamilton will always be my favourites.
what about keiichi tsujfrtgfcvf ?
CeSayrise mine favourite is dydtsts xhxgdgdgsts.
Why was Hunt's Marlboro logo by the back of his overalls taped in 1:50 ?
KIAN HUA SOH Certain countries didn’t allow cigarette sponsorship, so at those races, all the cigarette names on the cars, and suits, were covered up.
Admire Niki very much 👏♥️
Hi Duke , will you guys be bring out the 1983 500cc championship each race highlights ?
In the first i thought niki was a cold blood machine, but after the accident niki prove that was s fucking passionate person, great story i love niki, great spirit
And a year later, in 1977, he won the championship by being again the computer he was before... He proved he's both, a driver with an extraordinary cool temper and a man with his feelings, passion and fears at the same time, in an age when both attitudes were not exactly considered as virtues...
Lauda > Hunt.
Yes. Easily. For his courage and his intelligence and a hundred other qualities.
But none of that reflects on James Hunt. He was what he was - a buccaneer racer and the last of a type. Even the great Niki Lauda himself totally respected him for that. In most ways, it's a meaningless comparison.
ludocrat I agree, comparing the two is ludicrous, they were both different people, Professor vs Playboy, and both we're amazing in there own way, and both were as brave as the other, as you had to have balls of steel to drive in them days and to be world champion is one thing, both drivers deserve respect, as they respected, idolized and needed each other, as both of them envied each other
Nah i m more Lauda=Hunt
Angus Stewart Sorry, but Lauda is not Hunt. ;p
Lauda vs Hunt is better ...or if you really need it: Lauda != Hunt.
Nikki Lauda > Vin Diesel or Paul Walker
#killedbyfastandfuriousfanboys
RIP you crazy man
good old days
lauda fantastic. hunt a personality allways on the edge. He died very young but I think he did not care at all. great moovie. for a great time. Jesus I was 21and loved the races✌😃
In reality Hunt only won because the best driver was in hospital and retired because he knew Lauda would have easily beaten him if it wasn't for the accident, two things though, it was portrayed in the film that Hunt caused Lauda's accident but wasn't noticeable on actual footage and did Lauda pull out of the last race, that wasn't mentioned here either??
+Lucky Rocket yes he did retire from the last race but no hunt did not cause his crash in Germany he simply lost control u can actually watch a video of the crash online hunt is no where near Lauda when he loses control of his f1 car
Hunt managed to survive the season with an atrocious car that did nothing but breakdown in every other race..Hunt didn't cause Lauda's accident either
Sigmund Solo it’s perfectly fine to say “in hospital” lol
02:24 good god it's like Brühl is talking now :D
niki was the best driver in the 70's and without his accident he would have won 5 or 6 titles with ferrari, but enzo ferrari dropped him after fuji as number one driver and made him leave the team.
Yes the Ferrari people didnt think he was as good as before his crash. He only Made his title in 1977 to Show them that he still was the Best then he left
Never noticed that clear panel on the side of the cars back in the 70's, what the heck?!
Mercutio Rane so the driver can check which tyre or wheel had an issue, it was only on the 6 wheel Tyrell
Rip you two
RIP Niki 🙏
Unbelievable that Niki survived that
very much alike in the movie
what is wrong with Hollywood? Daniel Brühl wasn't even nominated for the role.
Daniel Brühl do a very good job!
PELO QUE SE PASSA NO FILME, VI MUITAS SEMELHANÇAS ENTRE LAUDA E SENNA. DISCIPLINADOS, TALENTOSOS, AUTO-CONFIANTES... SEUS ACIDENTES OCORRERAM QUANDO ELES NÃO QUERIAM CORRER. LAUDA NÃO FOI O PILOTO FRIO NO SEU DIA FATÍDICO. SENNA TAMBÉM PERSEGUIA UMA VITÓRIA DESESPERADAMENTE. PRA MIM O CARRO DE SHUMMY ESTAVA FORA DO REGULAMENTO E A FIA PERMITIU ISSO PORQUE ERA ESPERADO QUE SENNA NA WILLIANS SERIA UMA MONÓTONA RECEITA DE SUCESSIVAS VITÓRIAS.
that sounds like Stirling Moss narrating.
Please make Rush 2 - Prost v Senna
so there was no rain?
There was rain at first, but it stopped
Guys if you have seen the movie rush you now how it was the crash and its sad :c
This crash keeps reminded me of senna!
aggre
Rest in Peace Niki
Now you will compete on sky with Hunt.💔
RIP Niki
6 Wheeled INDY CARS!
I Never Knew...
ill STILL remember the 6 wheels f1 car..
1:41 i thought he was conscious when the medics rushed him to the hospital
Hunt was a Good Driver but he won the Title in 1976 only because of Niki Laura’s accident.
I came here because i see daniel bruhl in Rush on TV right at this moment.
niki has balls of steel!!!
why was the narrator drunk?
should make a senna movie, im surprised it hasnt been done yet, if the guys who made rush get together and do it, i think it will be a success, they done very well with rush, the story can focus on the senna prost rivalry, unfortunately we all know the sad ending
they did make a Senna movie, it's called Senna
i mean a hollywood one, not doco style
Deux grand champions !!
alguien por favor se lo pido traduce al español esto desde ya muchas gracias y espero que lean mi comentario desde argentina un abrazo enorme..
all you guys gotta see the original formula 1 movie from the 1966 season called grand prix and you can see where opie got alot of his ideas he got all his info from wikipedia. rush is a great flick-especially if it introduces more people to formula one. the best driver of ALL time is and always will be jim clark.formula one cars were so damned dangerous back then
People say the look a like (Daniel Bruhl and the REAL Niki Lauda), but they actually have different eye color!
Firemarioflower Brühl had a wig, false teeth, changed his speech (in German & English), and has a very different personality. I don’t think there’s another actor working today who does his “homework” like Daniel Brühl. He disappears into his characters.
crash in fast corner in nurgburgring...almost dead and james said niki is talking and happy...yes HAPPY wtf james lol...
That left rear tire looks like it's at an odd angle as he was spinning. Broken suspension?
General Obi Wan Kenobi That’s how the movie presented it.
General Obi Wan Kenobi He didn’t lose control; the car broke down.
i think the 2 front wheels was more about braking than actual cornering
ze rush, wuuu
