Niki Lauda vs James Hunt | A Formula One Rivalry

  • Niki Lauda's heroic return from life-threatening injury made him a global sporting superstar, but for Formula One fans it was his lightning speed, supreme skills and utter domination which, as much as his bravery, that made him a Grand Prix Hero. Lauda's rivalry with english driver James Hunt was captivating but there was always immense respect between the two of them.
    DVD bit.ly/NVBCwO
    Duke Download bit.ly/PaGrgN
Archive race action, rarely-seen testing footage and period interviews with Lauda himself recall the highs land lows of a stunning and inspirational career, including film of his very first Grand Prix outing in his native Austria in 1971. Although results with March in 1972 and BRM the following year were disappointing, Lauda did enough to attract the attention of Ferrari, and a race seat for 1974.
With commentary by Sir Stirling Moss, we enjoy action from those early, challenging days, and Lauda's move to the front with the Prancing Horse -- including his first Grand Prix win. There's also action from Monaco, Zolder, Anderstorp and Zandvoort as Lauda dominates the 1975 season on his way to the World Championship.
There's race footage from the dramatic 1976 season, including the fiery Nurburging crash which it was feared at the time would claim the champion's life. However, Lauda was racing again just six weeks later, and we see his brave return at Monza, as well as the Japanese Grand Prix where Lauda, still battling with his injuries, lost the championship by a single point.
More amazing than his rapid return to action, was the speed with which he regained his world-beating form, and race action from throughout 1977 records his dominant journey to a second World Championship. His switch to Brabham for 1978 saw the first stage of his Grand Prix career fade out, although there were unforgettable moments -- including the Swedish victory in the controversial BT46B 'Fan Car'!
In addition, we join Lauda for a 1976 Ferrari test session and five years later as he comes out of retirement to test for McLaren at Donington. Footage from the McLaren session provides a fascinating insight into the decisive moment which saw Lauda return to racing and, in 1984, score his third Formula One World Championship, cementing his place as a true Grand Prix Hero.

If we were back in 2014 and if I was on The Academy Voting Committee dreaming here but Bruhl would’ve been on my first Ballot for Lead for his role as Lauda. Hemsworth would’ve been there as well in the Supporting Category as Hunt.
The Academy Awards were stacked that year as well. After Rush was released in September the rest followed and it got lost.

Holy crap, Daniel Bruhl as Lauda has to be one of the closest acting portrayals of a real person in the history of cinema.

Couldn't agree more. After watching the film and real life footage of Lauda, I can no longer watch one without automatically thinking of the other. Credit should go where credit is due. Hemsworth is not that far off of Hunt either. If he wasn't already such a well known star for his 'Thor' portrayal, he probably would be getting similar praise for his portrayal and acting as well. Both men were well cast. But Bruhl took it a step beyond.

Man, the actor in the Rush was like a twin of the real Niki Lauda. It's like an actor is born just to fill in this single movie where he fits perfectly, and i've only seen a very few movies where they fit like that. Not necessarily a look alike though.

I personally have always found Niki Lauda an incredibly refreshing person. He is direct, honest and isn't afraid to speak his mind. I admire people who don't feel the need to pander to the media or speak only opinions which are popular with public opinion. He may make people mad, but I like it. I found him to be the more interesting, admirable person in Rush. The bravery he demonstrated in getting back in his car after such a horrific accident is just mind-boggling.

What got him that driver's seat in the first place.! It was an extreme hunger and desire to win, to not be beaten by yourself nor anyone else. That's how.
You do not attempt to venture into a boxing ring without a desire to fight. That's how racing was for the most part in that era. You raced to win no matter what.

The Road & Track article in 1976 portrayed a far different account
of the accident than the movie. Lauda was standing, his helmet off,
and edema had his head swollen to the size of a basket ball.
"How do I look?" He asked.
    "Fine", they lied.
    He then fell over, unconscious.
That was the R&T account anyway.

We need him as F1 sport director... Like he said a few years ago:
What we need in F1 is 1200 hp (which would be a V8 turbo or even a V10,
which means great sound again), huge tyres and huge wings because no
more little boys would be able to jump in a young age straight from
Formula 3 to 1 and being able to succeed!
He even talked to Bernie about that, but Bernie is even though he did a lot for the sport in the
end a used car sales man and not a real F1 Racer like Lauda.
And that is what we really need in the F1 Management more F1 Racers that now what the fans want.
Bernie even complains now that Liberty Media focuses to much on improving the
sport for the fans, because F1 is a business and that is how it should
    be treated.
He clearly was and is in denial that without the fans the
sport would be dead in a matter of time and that no amount of money and
support from any rich family (Bahrain etc.) could change that on the
long run! Im so glad the dark emperor of F1 is gone!

Yes. Easily. For his courage and his intelligence and a hundred other qualities.

In reality Hunt only won because the best driver was in hospital and retired because he knew Lauda would have easily beaten him if it wasn't for the accident, two things though, it was portrayed in the film that Hunt caused Lauda's accident but wasn't noticeable on actual footage and did Lauda pull out of the last race, that wasn't mentioned here either??

niki was the best driver in the 70's and without his accident he would have won 5 or 6 titles with ferrari, but enzo ferrari dropped him after fuji as number one driver and made him leave the team.

Yes the Ferrari people didnt think he was as good as before his crash. He only Made his title in 1977 to Show them that he still was the Best then he left

لكن البريطاني جيمس هانت المتهور كان سبب في عدم اتفاق السائقين على قرار الالغاء

PELO QUE SE PASSA NO FILME, VI MUITAS SEMELHANÇAS ENTRE LAUDA E SENNA. DISCIPLINADOS, TALENTOSOS, AUTO-CONFIANTES... SEUS ACIDENTES OCORRERAM QUANDO ELES NÃO QUERIAM CORRER. LAUDA NÃO FOI O PILOTO FRIO NO SEU DIA FATÍDICO. SENNA TAMBÉM PERSEGUIA UMA VITÓRIA DESESPERADAMENTE. PRA MIM O CARRO DE SHUMMY ESTAVA FORA DO REGULAMENTO E A FIA PERMITIU ISSO PORQUE ERA ESPERADO QUE SENNA NA WILLIANS SERIA UMA MONÓTONA RECEITA DE SUCESSIVAS VITÓRIAS.

all you guys gotta see the original formula 1 movie from the 1966 season called grand prix and you can see where opie got alot of his ideas he got all his info from wikipedia. rush is a great flick-especially if it introduces more people to formula one. the best driver of ALL time is and always will be jim clark.formula one cars were so damned dangerous back then

People say the look a like (Daniel Bruhl and the REAL Niki Lauda), but they actually have different eye color!

    • @janeathome6643
      @janeathome6643 5 лет назад

Firemarioflower Brühl had a wig, false teeth, changed his speech (in German & English), and has a very different personality. I don’t think there’s another actor working today who does his “homework” like Daniel Brühl. He disappears into his characters.
