- Here is my Review for the Costco Exclusive Arcade1Up Pac-Man XL Arcade Machine. I did pay for this Arcade out of my own pocket. Let's dive into this Cabinet and my thoughts on if it's worth purchasing or not. Or, if you stay through to the end of the video was this Pac-Man Variant "Too Big Too Late?". It looks good. People are talking about A1Up going out of business but in my mind they are now coming out with their best products. The XL and Deluxe lines are superior to any of the previous models. They did listen to the community and made the adjustments and the machines finally look good (Outside of the Atari 50th).

@@PDubsArcadeLoft I did for class of 81 but that argument could be used for all technology. Maybe upgrade every 2 or so years. I think the slanted screen is a 100% upgrade from the previous generation.
I think their financial review is end of this month. Should probably have an idea of their direction after that.
@@PDubsArcadeLoft I don't think it's about the customers who bought machinese before. This is the first machine I've ever bought from A1up, and I suspect there's a whole lot of new customers like me, who finally bit the bullet and bought this because it sold out at the Costco near me, without them having to put it on sale. This suggests they still have room to grow. This is probably why this past year, they've been sticking to their "bread and butter" The SF, Pacman, and MK cabs
Let’s go! The XL looks nice next to that Qbert. Definitely does not look like a toy anymore. Everyone just needs more space if XL becomes more of a thing going forward.

Finally, the XL looks like what they should've done awhile ago, but let's see what else they come out with. Class of 81' seems like a slam dunk in XL hopefully it happens..

My 81 deluxe and capcom legacy fill a certain nook in my gameroom perfectly. The xl is probably too tall or maybe too wide so I couldn't get it even if I wanted to... that said I have real cabs but arcade 1ups are great to fill in spaces! I'm happy with mine and I hope these xl ones fit people's rooms nicely.
I feel like most of us have modded our way into getting Pac-Man or any of the classic 80 titles; especially the Namco ones. They should do stuff like an XL Star Wars, Tron, OutRun, House of the Dead - stuff that’s new or have unique controls. Just how I see it. I think you’re on the same wavelength there. Nice review!

I personally love this cabinet. I've had the Legacy and the 40th and this blows them out of the water. The lit buttons don't bother me. Just wish I didn't have a side panel damaged out of the box, and I usually have great luck in that area with cabinets. Oh well. It's the best one they've put in this form factor in my opinion. Can't wait for the eventual blue Ms. Pac-Man XL to put beside this!

Man this was a Fantastic Review! This Pac-Man cab is full of the many improvements requested by the Community Over Time.
But this Review is also reflective of the amount of Knowledge gained over time and dealing with the Product.
You hit on all the negatives and Positives that I personally see, and im GLAD! You made mention of the Flaw in regards to the relative to how accessible they are for people once the cab is built.
Over time more and more people are realizing hand and hand with being an Arcade Owner, also comes the need to be a Maintenance Man/Woman.
No I don't mean that These A1up cabs are as Complex as real Cabs, but because they can use the Same Exact Buttons, You inherent the same Potential Issues.
And with Arcade Cabs, there comes a time where a Button or Stick breaks, and then you gotta go in and fix it.
This build makes that inevitability such a pain to deal with whenever the time comes.
But anyways, Fantastic Content Dubs! Thanks for the Review!

Got mine coming tomorrow. Had to have mine shipped. Costco in South Dakotas got pallets of snowblowers out now. Can't wait to get this in my arcade. Never owned a Gen 1 2 or 3...this will be a nice add. 👍 hoping for turtles xl

More Pac-Man XLs need to be made because Costco is now out of stock and if A1Up makes more this time with the option of having the light up buttons turned off like the Galaga Deluxe Cab, I would get that and the Ms. Pac-Man XL cab and finally part with my Legacy Cabs. Plus, the option of adding a riser booster with the machine's color to give it extra height to make it Pro like without making a Pro cabinet.
Well..being sold out is a good thing for Arcade1Up, would be bad if they were just collecting dust in a warehouse for sure.

Great review 👏 I personally think Arcade1Up will be around for afew more years. I feel this year has been a better year for them as far as sales. They haven't done anything too crazy but they have perfected what they've done in the past

Wait, didn't A1up go out of business in 2019? And 2020? And 2021? And 2022? Now 2023? Ever since the first cabinets shipped people have been confidently predicting that Arcade1up was going out of business soon. Somehow they still pump out the cabinets, secure new licenses, and generally keep serving a community that refuses to love them.
I think the issue this year is the CEO and other Executives have all been let go and now the company has been taken over by their investors, so no clue what will happen next
Someday they will go out of business, and all the haters will smugly say "See? I told you so!" All companies eventually fail, and one that serves such a small and capricious market certainly won't survive forever. @@PDubsArcadeLoft

I love mine! Kicks the 40th’s ass in every single way. You were spot on with the 40th being a 6 out of 10. Hoping the new management can fix A1ups previous issues. I think XL going forward is a must!

Thank you! You are the only reviewer I've found who actually talks about the gameplay and the 4-way joystick option. Everyone else is just talking about the cosmetics. All I care about is how accurate this thing is to the actual original Pac-Man cabinet from the 1980's. I think I could tell by your game play here that the latency looks pretty low and the joystick looks pretty responsive. Is it responsive enough for quick moves though when you are trying to fake out the ghosts?
It's not as good as running it through real arcade hardware and a CRT
That picture quality looks great, love it next to Qbert might be a little to big for me I like the 3/4 except for gun games but this is awesome looking ty for vid

personally, i am more in favore of the original smaller form factor, but then again that's how I started collecting this machines. I don't want to upgrade to deluxe or XL because of OCD and also the fact that I can "squeeze in" more cabinets. I don't mind that they are smaller and since I'm middle aged I prefer to sit and play rather than stand.

“They” have sold over 1,000 class of 81’ deluxe in the past month on Amazon alone! No idea what kind of numbers they deal with, but that sounds pretty strong. 🤷♂️

It would be really nice if the coin doors opened on these. Lots of potential unused space inside. Arcade room can double as a pantry for the wife. All joking aside, its actually nice to be able to stash some things inside of these empty cabinets (I do). In particular cured potables that like darkness. The Suzo Happ faux coin door that opens is a great mod for anyone looking to use their arcade cabinet as a....regular cabinet.

I think the cab looks good , far as the light up buttons I just don't get the hate on them ! you don't even look at the buttons while playing so I am lost why people hate them , I personally think they add to the cab.

Its almost there...give us real T-molding (its not that expensive and people will pay for whatever expense it incurs) , flatter screw hole covers (looks like it has warts all over it), nix the light up buttons, reduce the amount of A1up logos and we're good to go. If Ms. Pac-Man drops and looks this good, I'll have to snag one and mod it.

I think it is ok for what it is. Yes a little too late in my opinion. I think for some wanting to get their first home arcade cabinet will be fine with it. If it ever goes on sale at a clearance price point then it could even be a good shell for a vertical 60 in 1 multicade.
Is it enough to keep them going through 2024 though? This company appears to be floundering

Refuse to upgrade anything that plays the same games I already own. Awesome for those who have the pick of the litter starting this hobby or others who are 6’1 and above but for me I already own 24 machines and I’m not about to start over especially when we know we won’t see 75% of their releases redone in an Xl format

Arcade1Up’s machines are great. I have the two original Pac man and Galaga units from 2018. Unfortunately all of their products now are just so expensive. You can get a real original Pac man arcade that same size for roughly the same price :(
True roughly the same price you can get a real pacman so you have to decide what's best for you. Both ways you go will have headaches

It's cute to here someone say an arcade machine that weighs 70lbs is too much.
The "too big" doesn't have to deal with weight. It's Arcade1up waiting 4 years to make XL Arcades versus their standard 3/4 size, should they have done this height from the beginning, etc. Hope that clears up your confusions.
The lack of optional scan lines is a miss for me but otherwise this cabinet looks pretty solid.
Yeah you can turn pixel smoothing on or off don't recall seeing scan lines
Yeah, I agree. I run all my cabs with scanlines on. Almost all of them have that option, wonder why this one doesn't.

This is the way, sounds like they switched to Baolain which I think it a great move, even my heavily used Baolain stick is still hanging in there on my bought used ALU. I assume you can disable the lights on the buttons.

Nice Review! I won't reiterate my full disappointment of the monitor here since I said pretty much everything in your short, but yeah, it may look great dead on playing right in front of it, but as you showed in one of your off angle shots playing Pac-Man, wash out city. I can't have another eyesore monitor situation in my home arcade. You're right though, it's better than the TM monitors Arcade1Up used to use. But not as good as the vertical aligned BOE in my Namco Pac-Man Legacy. But there is one thing we do agree on, having to disassemble the cabinet to get the control panel out? What Were They Thinking???!!! Arcade1Up perfected the easily removable control panel from day one, how did they mess this up? Hopefully they'll see this video and work out a redesign back to the perfect design :)

Yes, I think you're spot on. The standard BOE Arcade1Up chose can't handle the extreme laid down angle, which causes screen uniformity issues when walking away or at certain angles. I wouldn't be surprised if this is why Arcade1Up avoided this design all these years.
Yeah, after seeing this issue on the Namco Deluxe's at Best Buy, I was hoping beyond hope that the XL Pac-Man would get a different monitor, so I could consider that version as an upgrade. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be. Now my hope rests in the upcoming $299 edition to upgrade (I'll wait for the inevitable sale at $199 or less, though). Yes, it doesn't have a riser, but I can use my existing riser and the new version does come with the additional 2 games (Rolling Thunder and Galaga 88). HOWEVER... If it doesn't have the lightup marquee, then I'm not going for it. Though lightup marquees aren't paramount for me, I do dig how the Pac-Man one looks and don't want to lose it.
At the end of the day though, if you're happy, that's all that matters. There's a reason there are so many options, something for everyone :)

I have the Golden Tee XL, but it's going to be my only cab without a riser until they add some more weight to fix the stability issues.

on the wobbling issue I always take off them white inserts on all my cabinets on the bottom I have them on carpet also they won't wobble anymore I have XL GoldenTee that don't wobble

This cab is awesome but I don’t want to sell my Super Pac-Man to get it. I have too much money into it with upgraded buttons, stick and marquee. It’s unfortunate they took so long to get it right.

When I purchase mine, I was thinking of switching the buttons to either eclipse buttons w/ a separate on/off switch, or changing to regular cherry switch buttons. I would have two white and the rest black to camouflage the extraneous four additional buttons. Which option do you think would enhance the look more? On a side note, the Super Pac-Man cab I purchased from you is still chillin’ in the arcade. Great video👍

PS: I did illuminated buttons on my Twilight Zone pinball machine but don't love them. Pinball feels like a decent use but not an arcade video game. My $0.02

With the add ons and being full sized. It's worth the $600. I love my current Arcade 1up collection. Sadly, they have soured me too much here recently for me to even keep watch of what they are releasing. Seeing ANOTHER Pac-Man released doesn't give me much hope for them. BUT, I do hope they don't go out and keep releasing this style of arcade(s).

Dubs, did you ever switch out the joystick? Do you think there’s room to switch it out with a Tornado Terry version? Speaking strictly of size of joystick base. If you didn’t swap out joystick is that because you are happy with it? I just picked one up and I am curious. This is my 3rd Pac-Man and I have swapped out each joystick with a Sanwa stick and I don’t want to use a sanwa in this version. Either keep what I have or switch out with a better one.

@@PDubsArcadeLoft Of course there is the tornado Terry one. I also saw a 3D printed one with leaf switches and the one I want is from Groovy gamer but it is sold out and has been for a while. I emailed the man there and he said they are getting more in but that was in March and they are still sold out.

You do a great job sir, overall, but why the negative title to the video? I think newcomers to the hobby (which the hobby dearly needs) are going to look at entries like this and move on. This isn't the only example and I certainly don't mean to pick on this particular title, but you have to admit that the overall vibe from content creators in this sphere is not overly favorable to A1U. The videos and titles to these videos have to be demoralizing to a company that has brought a lot of smiles to most of us. For the sake of clicks, most creators are creating drama where there is none. Sorry man, don't mean to harsh your mellow, but there are a lot of us out here who see it that way, even if some are not saying it.@@PDubsArcadeLoft
I would like to add, that I do like your random late night and off-the-cuff deliveries at times. I apologize for my frankness. I just get a little frustrated at the overall vibe coming from the content creators. I honestly think that much of this content will spell the doom of the aftermarket, arcade hobby.

DIY mods are always fun!
I just wish they would finally get rid of the smoothing option and replace it with a good scanline option, like some of their other cabs (SFII Deluxe) have. I know different cabs are programmed by different teams, but come on, I don't know anyone who likes the smoothing option.
Hey, Great review Pdubs! Very thorough and thoughtful. I am glad you pointed out that this cab is 75 pounds and not 100 pounds, which, for me, is the biggest con of this cab. Other than that, it’s great, and prob the most authentic cab to its original that 1up has put out to date. GT XL and Shaq Jam XL are both roughly 100 pounds each. So of course by making it 75 pounds 1up finds a way to cut corners even on an otherwise great product.😮so of course it wobbles - prob a lot, even on hardwood floors, as it is much bigger overall than the 3/4 scale Pac-Man deluxe but only outweighs it by like 10 pounds:(

It's a Great looking cabinet, but it's plagued by the same input lag issues as the other pacman cabinets.

I wonder how well this larger form factor will hold up over time. The weight of the cabinet made with typical 1UP material would make me afraid to ever significantly move it while assembled (can't support itself). Not sure if the material quality will be able to hold together that size and weight. If these cabinets are "moving" while being played as Pdubs showed, I wonder if the weight of the cabinet will lead to a deterioration of the cabinet construction over time. The smaller cabs on risers are more suitable for the building materials used by 1UP and are probably more sturdy because its a better match of material and size. This is possibly too big for the materials used.

Games list is in the video description. When you turn on the machine you just navigate up and down on the main menu and select what game you want to play.

Meh I played it at my local Costco... Not impressed for $600+tax. The buttons are so distracting as well. Its decent, but you can make your own for so much less. A Pi3, P4 etc and you in business. Nice try 1up, but I just can't justify the price and the "most likely lack of future playing" that would happen. My 2 cents. overall enjoy people if you want it.

Class of 81 deluxe has Ms pac man which I find better than pac man and a better variety of games imo. Plus I dig the class of 81 artwork. Gotta pass on this one personally.

Not too big, but definitely too late. All their hardware and software issues has ruined it for me. I wonly buy real cabs now. I have my own built multicade for everything else.
