Gas Pump Skimmers and How To Avoid Them

- This video is about a gas skimmer bust initiative we took part in just before the holidays, checking every gas pump in Seminole County for internal credit card skimmers that thieves use to get YOUR information. See us pull one out of the machine and learn a few simple tips to avoid having your credit card information skimmed.
Usually where the owners of the station are the culprits
Gonna go ahead and add to the comments saying "Use cash." On top of the obvious security benefits, it's usually cheaper, because you're not getting charged a fee for using a card. Most of the gas stations around me also give 10¢ off per gallon for cash purchases. Just use cash.
Or just pay cash.
One of the benefits of cash.
Cash is being replaced by electronic currency, bitcoin and the like.
Cash is still King, and will be for a long time. It’s the international ‘lingua franca’.
@@jamesa7506 no it's not, and crypto works like cash so also a non-issue, it's not like a credit card
scammers can easily make those seal stickers.
WWy make them? They're stupid easy to bypass by either pealing them with a knife or using rubbing alcohol.
Cash is king.
Why aren’t these boxes locked!!!!
11:12 The narrator says the door is locked. Doesn't look like much of a lock when you see the inside of the door though.
@@nikiTricoteusebasic cabinet lock. Dont even need tools to open that you just pull hard
One key fits any pump.
@@luminousfractal420 Yeah. That's practically criminal negligence on the part of the pump operators. They're giving scammers a convenient place to put their skimmers and making it super easy for them at the same time.
@@robertheinkel6225 Really poor on the part of the pump operators. They should be held accountable.
The company LOCATION should be held responsible, EACH pump should be verified as NOT messed with at the BEGINNING of EACH shift
Lots done as inside jobs. Also, can't get employees to show up at work. How in the hell you think they are going to actually do their jobs - those who do show up. Ypu have a few witb work ethic people working and a bunch of shits working who do bare minimum. The ones w work ethic try to carry the load --- and get burned out. . Thos standing and goofing off get paid same as the workers. This is worse now than ever.
This is why I pay cash for gas
One of the many reasons I always pay for my gas among other things with cash, it's very rare for me to use my card anywhere other than inside my local grocery store.
and which can usaly get another 100 dollars cash back without stupid atm fee?
Cash is king.
@@citytrees1752 Yes, cash SHOULD BE king. But recently, I attempted to pay cash at a restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia and was refused. Only debit or credit cards would be accepted. Why? High crime area (On a main street!) where robberies for cash exists. Apparently, the phrase, "THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE" on our paper currency doesn't mean anything.
That's why the dollar bill "cash" is being phased out and replaced with electric money ie bitcoin, cryptocurrency, "card only" transactions, etc. It won't be long now.
or just use tap to pay which generates a new number every time
Yes, I see how easy it is to attach this. What I can’t understand is why the installation of the skimmer is not caught on camera. Most gas stations have cameras on the lot. Leading me to believe it may well be someone working for minimum wage at the gas station.
95% of the time it is the station owners or employes. I saw a recent video where someone found one in a credit card reader inside the station beside the cash register. No way on earth someone walked in there and installed that 3 feet from where the clerk stands. THe one I saw they asked the clerk and he just covered his face and walked away- obviously he knew.
@@thecityman1910wonder if that shows how bad inflation is and how raising minimum wage just keeps the same shit ouroboros samsara cycle going?
@@nightmarerex2035 I think there is a lot of truth to that. My profession is City Management which means my police department submits all the crime stats and so on and copy me on it. I can tell you that shoplifting has gotten 4 times (that isn't a figurative number, its a real one, as in we had 4 times more petty theft reports in 2023 than in 2022 for the same time period. Of course you've seen that on the news too with all these group thefts in stores. The people we arrest these days are mostly still just drug addicts and teenagers, but there are definantely a growing number of what you'd call working poor - people who have jobs but just can't make ends meet due to the high cost of groceries and other goods. So yes, I think the economy is a factor in a lot of the crimes we see now days.
Not only that the camera footage might only go back so many days and do they even bother going back through it
They dont watch the cameras 24-7 they only play it back after something happens. A camera can record a crime and it doesnt stop the criminal, if they dont watch the video untill long after.
Good tips - thank you!
How about installing a loud alarm that goes off in 5 seconds, if that door is opened and a disarm code isn't entered in time. Or a flashing light and alarm in the gas station alerting the attendant. Just a thought. I'm not a big fan of going in to pay, and possibly getting shot during a robbery. 😉
how about waiting for the scammer to come back for it ?
that's the thing... they don't have to open it again. the current models use their own wifi so the criminal can access the data without opening.
@@error.418 We've been getting wifi, bluetooth, and cell skimmers. In many cases the cell skimmers call in real time, download the data, and it's not even in the US so there's no way to go after them. We recommend if you suspect a pump checking for a wifi signal, bluetooth signal, or going to a different place. We find them almost exclusively at stations that are in the interstate, so they get lots of people who are passing through.
I saw one of the stickers that had been slit with a razor. If I hadn’t done more than glance, I’d have missed it.
Exactly same idea occurred un2 mee
here is an idea pay cash i mean I am just putt it out there
Should be doing that at the USA Gas Mart on route 422 in Warren, Ohio.
BTW...if the security tape is what you believe in.....they will just fake that too. Don't trust anything. Cash is king.
or just use tap to pay which generates a new number every time
How about just use cash instead of being a slave to the credit card companies? Oh that’s right, you get points while paying 25% interest.
What is this cash stuff you speak of? I've heard about it before, not sure how it works./s
I use my card almost exclusively, and have never paid one penny of interest.
@@robertheinkel6225 That’s the only way to do it but you can still fall victim to the card skimmers. They’re everywhere.
Are you familiar with debit cards?
@@aerofreak2053 Skimmers can hack debit cards too.
Call me crazy but how about an alarm switch on each pump door so that the store clerk is immediately alerted if ANY of the pump doors are opened?
woudln't do much good if the clerk is the one putting it in there
I'm Sorry in Advance if I sound like a Creep 😂 but Why is Every Law Enforcement Officer I've Seen lately so Damn Gorgeous 😅 its like God is Blessing them so Well 🤗 Now I couldn't concentrate with whatever he was explaining, if I Ever got arrested I Don't think I would care how I got there 😆
Thank you now it’s cash for everything when possible .
Contact the store manager............surely you jest.
Great. Except, I have never seen a pump with a security tape on it.
Or just fix the broken and grossly vulnerable card system deployed throughout the USA.
yeah... the european system has much better security
Don't the stores check the pumps daily?!
Why aren't the pumps locked?!🤔
Just gonna start paying in store
Pay cash! Never been skimmed 😎
Indoors no t out
Always use cash.
good to know... unfortunately
ALWAYS fuel up at the pump NEAREST the store where the cashier can easily see that pump.
!
Pay in cash
The criminal manufacturers and criminal users of these devices should be imprisoned for a minimum of ten years on a first offense.
They dont even get prison time, usually 2 years probabtion
Arms races are healthy (that's how our brain evolved). Using government brute force only creates a bigger weak point: the government itself. Manufacturers should most definitely not be punished.
@@alterego3734 ,
Your above assertion works great in theory. In reality, anyone making a device whose only purpose is to aid and abet crime is in fact a criminal. That is why the makers of skimmers must be punished. Multiple use electronic tools are a different story.
I pay inside. Problem solved.
Use cash people but then you have to worry about the atm 🏧 being a skimmer also 🤦🏿♂️ you can’t win
The security tape means “somebody “ put a piece of tape on the pump. If I was going to put a skimmer in a pump, the last thing I would do is put a piece of official security tape on the pump.
Did the police stake out the pump with the skimmer?
wouldn't matter, these things put out a wifi signal so the skimmer doesn't need to open the pump again to get the data
This video is 4 years old and the comments are from that last few weeks. The bigger problem here is Google only showing the entire population what they want you to see, hear and think!
wat
@@error.418 Your inability to construct a coherent sentence marks you out as an imbecile. Perfect fodder for youtube.
Instead of some stupid "security" tape why not put a better lock on it or a alarm on that door.
This report completely ignores how someone got access to the 'secure' pump in the first place.
How does a criminal get into the pump???
the locks on them are a joke, you can sneeze at them and pick them
"come back and retrieve the device" lol, no, they connect to them via wifi, they produce their own wifi signal.
That's so fricking scary because I use that gas station to get my gas because it's right by my job. I think I need to start paying with cash.
or just use tap to pay which generates a new number every time
Most people use credit cards 2 get rewards every month, like me
No wonder 15% of gas buyers still pay in cash.
Don't buy gas.
I have a Tesla, soI mostly charge “refuel” ar home. On longer road trips just plug into a Tesla supercharger, no cards required and it bills your card through your Tesla account automatically.
@@poa2.0surface77 Not sure what you’re talking about. Mine Model Y been running flawlessly for last 2.5 years. Build quality is excellent. Battery and transmission warranty is for 8 years or 120,000 miles. Only accident or flood damage is not covered under warranty.
Or just buy an electric vehicle and charge at home.
