    They way my brother use to do it was separate the two halves while standing in front of it. He only did one though. God rest his soul.

      Hahaha. They don’t even put the removable band on the parking brake side anymore. I have just done the pancake on the service side before when I was in a hurry. The service brake spring might break a finger but it’s not a widow maker.

    Not gonna lie that was really creative for not having a caging socket. We buy sealed non adjustable clamps on the chambers cause people tend to kill themselves messing with the clamps.

      @MikesMischief  11 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah I don’t think they make cans with removable clamps on the big spring anymore. I haven’t seen one for quite a few years. I mumble a bit but yeah I just use the truck air to pull the spring back if there’s enough left of the pancake.

    I don't know what some people are talking about, you said it clearly in the video that you have different brake chambers. Some people just like to talk😂😂😂😂😂😂 Thank you for you very informative video

    • @MikesMischief
      @MikesMischief  Год назад

      I know it’s illegal to have different cans on the same axle. That being said if you only have one or the other you can get by for a couple days while you’re waiting for parts to come in. The difference in throw isn’t actually a problem until the shoes are worn down. The short throw cans are $30 at Napa and for some reason a guy always has some lying around. I ran it for a couple of days until I got a long stoke can in and had time to put it on. I wouldn’t do that if you live in an area where you cross an active dot scale daily but that’s not the case here. Stupid? Probably… but it is what it is and I’m ok showing it in a video because that’s real life and a guy might have to do it to get by sometimes.

    @4:56 that is not the correct way to measure to cut the rod. there could be issues inside the can that cod cause that measurement to be wrong. you are suppose to mount the chamber then use a square to mark the rod off of the center of the S-cam.

    • @MikesMischief
      @MikesMischief  7 месяцев назад +2

      I’ve been working in shops for decades and I’ve never seen someone mount a can just to get the measurement. I’ve used a long square when a can blew out and there was nothing to measure. You can measure from the center of the s-cam to the face of the bracket with a long square because the bracket itself is a square surface that is normally flush with the face of the can when mounted. Square is square so it doesn’t matter if you measure the top, middle or bottom as long as you’re measuring from the same square surface. When the spring is shmucked inside I use a metal coat hanger or wire to get the measurement if it’s not too far gone. The average person is too lazy to mount and then unmount a can for a measurement. Probably the “correct” way but certainly far from the most common.

    • @MikesMischief
      @MikesMischief  Год назад

      @JagdeepSingh-wv1ry I replaced the brakes on a trailer once and the drums went on tough. I told my boss and he said run it. I took a infrared thermometer with me and the drums maxed out the thermometer (over 500°) in 3 miles. We ended up taking them off immediately. They sold us Q-pluses instead of Qs. The other problem could be the air lines on the wrong hole in the can. Did they change out the can? Is it on the truck or trailer? Are your glad hands hooked up properly?

      @@MikesMischief and mine doesn’t go that hot in that less miles. I have driven over 1000 miles on this. With applying the brakes they get around 400 to 500. I too measured with infrared thermometer. But even without applying brakes I used engine brakes and spike after noticing the drums overheating two of them do go over 200 plus. And that’s with no brakes applied at all.

  • @nateadams1515

    Maybe I’ve been doing it wrong but I just back off the slack adjusters and then let all the air out and done deal.

    • @MikesMischief
      @MikesMischief  Год назад

      If you can back your slack adjuster off with the brakes set then your brakes aren’t working properly. These should take 45 min tops and there’s no reason to let all of the air out of the truck.

    You text edit about long and short stroke chambers being a DOT Violation is inaccurate. The stipulation is the same "size" chambers. Size is defined as the diameter of the chamber, not long stroke vs short. Just an FYI.

    • @MikesMischief
      @MikesMischief  Год назад +1

      FMCSA/DOT Section 393.47 Subpart b says “The service brake chambers and spring brake chambers on each end of an axle must be the same size.” I copied and pasted that from the FMCSA website 2 seconds ago. I didn’t see “same size” defined anywhere. Do you have a citation where they define “same size”? Long stroke cans are visibly larger not the “same size”.

    Dude! That's an out of service violation!
    You can't mix brake chambers. I understand if you have an emergency. However,
    In a regular replacement situation, that will get you in a lot of trouble with the DOT!
