I'm 78 years old and I Trained on the 38 spl S&W 6 shot Revolver> I became extremely good with this Platform! I then went to a Glock 19 which became my Duty Weapon for 15 years as an Armed Security Officer. I was also Trained as a K-9 Officer and had a K-9 with me in my Patrol Vehicle! As I became Older, about 76 years old, I had some physical problems in my Hands and Feet, which precluded Me from handling large caliber guns so I switched to the 22LR/22 Mag Platform. I shoot once every week and I am A Member of an Indoor Range/Outdoor range here in Sunny Florida! I Now shoot better than I ever have and I carry A 22LR or A 22 Mag Gun for my Self defense! At my age, I feel good about being able to defend myself But I am Grateful that I Never had to use my Weapon to Defend Someone or Myself! Thank You and Stay Safe, God Bless You!
I picked up a very slightly used TX22 a few weeks ago. First 22 I've had in years. Wasn't expecting much due to it being a Taurus and my past with them. I bought three 325 round boxes of Federal. It came with a 16 round mag and two 16 rounders with +4 extensions on them. Went through about 750 rounds the other day and had a blast. Zero issues. I was shocked.
If you choose semi auto make sure it’s double action. Gives you the ability to double tap it or more to get it to fire… if not grip and rip. Load the next one in. Which is super easy with the sr22. 90 year old with arthritis can rack one. Why I chose the SR22 Ruger… 👍
Yhe best part of the sr22 that tandemkross makes kits to turn the ten round magazines into 15 and I have mine done and they worked perfectly this is and excellent gun for a ccw there easy to conceal Doble action a very good safty decocker so carrying with a chambered round is much safer and there are alot of holsters on the market and there is a whole host of upgrades on the market mine eats every ammo on the market even the cheap bulk stuff I may get a few missed fires but very few jams and the miss fires you just keep pulling the trigger until it fires but I'm a little careful with this stuff it usually will have no problum but I've gotten a bullet that sounds very loud so I prefer cci ammo.
TX22....total quality with no misfires or malfunctions; like it so much, got a 2nd one. Feel pretty confident with it and thinking about pairing with CCI Stingers.
Training and quality ammo are great; however, don't forget about maintenance. Because 22 lr ammo is notoriously more dirty than centerfire, you should clean it after every range trip. I can tell you from experience that you can go through 500 or even 1000 rounds of centerfire for a training / competition event without any stoppages, but you'd be hard pressed to make it past 100 - 150 rounds of 22 lr in a semi automatic platform without jamming every other round. Clean that 22 as if your life depends on it; it just might.
That may well be...your gun is filthy, there is no such thing as 'clean' .22...no big deal on the range, but if you Depend on that gun for anything, you are not being smart to rely on a dirty firearm, of any caliber...
@@waynepasko9901First off, you've got an unreliable firearm from an infamously bad company (Taurus). Second, it's a .22lr Third. It's a dirty 22lr. Clean your gun OR get a sharp stick!
I have a GSG 1911 in 22 and it is super accurate. In a self defense situation I'd rather have my 9 mm but a few well placed 22 rounds will save your life.
No body wants to see a naked grand ma. But that was a question on family feud. What is the last time a burglar wants to see when they break into a house. “A naked grand ma!” 😂😂😂😂
I don't normally carry a 22, but I have. Since buying nothing but CCI several years ago they have been 100% in an LCPII, a Ruger SR22 and even a Phoenix. Good review on the 22.
I own 2 Ruger SR22 pistols and a Ruger Mark 4 22/45 lite. I've had wonderful performance with them with only an occasional issue. I now have thousands of rounds through them! 👍
Funny for me reading your comment. I just bought a LCP II this week. Brand new gun. Shot it 10 times, it misfired (slide didn’t fully return) twice. Was using Remington ammo. Switched to CCI Stingers. Jammed on first shot. Didn’t eject the casing and slammed the next one up against it. Jammed 3 more times in 26 more shots. I just sent it back to Ruger yesterday (the store doesn’t take returns on firearms).
I've had an H&K MP5 .22 for years. My absolute favorite gun of mine to shoot on the range. I never bother to clean it, never jams, shoots like a laser beam. .22lr is very underrated.
@@heatwad1017 I bought mine at least 7 years ago. I remember H&K discontinued them around 2018, then brought them back in 2021. Great little shooter. Would absolutely recommend it over the GSG version.
I shot a suppressed TX22 recently. Super reliable and OMG it was fun! OK, not my first choice for self-defense (nor is any 22 rimfire) but if I had to that would likely be my choice.
My wife has very weak hands due to a medical issue. After trying most semi-autos as well as revolvers; she chose the TX22 and loves it. She does not carry it as she is always with me when she leaves the house. It is her home defense gun when I’m out. She is confident in its stopping power as her cousin was shot once in the sternum by a Buckmark from 5 yards, 10 years ago during a weed deal that went bad. While tragic, she knows that it is a lethal round especially using the swarm of bees method which the TX22 is perfect for.
Chris thank you for the accuracy in your reviews. It's been some years since I've been out shooting, remember when $10 bought a brick of 22's. Keep up the great work my friend, stay safe.
I remember a VERY LONG time ago K Mart would run a Blue Light Special on bricks of 22, $4.77 for 500 rounds. And it was decent ammo, it was quite rare to see any malfunction in my old 10/22, even more rare to get a failure to fire.
I've put 500 plus rounds through my Taurus TX .22LR without a single issue. It's been an amazing little pistol and I think every woman should own and have mastered the TX-22.
I love shooting .22lr. I've been shooting some old cci ammo from 1989 in a cheap rifle and had only 1 malfunction out of 100 rounds. Not bad in my book.
Haven't read through all the comments but that's why the SR-22 is a good semi-auto with its double strike capability or you have to do is keep pulling the trigger till it goes bang which will happen most times on the second hit plus you can get 13 to 16 rounds in it and it's reasonably small to carry and lightweight
The Mossad used Beretta 71s in 22lr for up close assassinations. The 71 was also carried by the Israeli Sky Marshals. A 71-armed marshal was credited with ending a skyjacking…against terrorists armed with AK47s. Training, tactics, and sheer balls are more important than caliber selection.
OSS and CIA also used the High Standard HDM as their main suppressed pistol for years...they might still be using them. If it's good enough for Gary Powers, probably is for you.
Yep, people often underestimate the .22lr only because it’s the “beginner’s” caliber and it doesn’t kick when fired. But, in reality, the .22lr is still a real bullet, and is absolutely lethal.
Make sure to use cci stingers. That gun was built for them. I put multuple thousands of rounds through mine with no issues but sold it after they were banned from Apple seed events and ammo drought a few years back regretfully.
@@tooks1509you see many 22 injuries and deaths because 22 is the cheapest gun and ammo available, and is ridiculously common. it’s because you can buy one for $70, murder someone w it, and throw it away and only be out $70. it’s not bc it’s a good choice.
Good video! The only thing I can add is something Elmer Keith said a long time ago about a defensive handgun: "Carry the biggest thing you can carry and hit with reliably under any and all circumstances and you won't go wrong." So, I take that to mean is if a .22 is the biggest thing you can handle so be it. Just make sure you can put those rounds where they'll do the most good. Hey, even a .44 magnum is just wasted energy if you can't hit the target!
I love my Mossberg 702 Plinkster in 22lr. Ive taken many squirrel with it. Plus, too me, squirrel hunting definitly helps with quick target acquisition and accuracy. Love this channel
I've got the Rossi version of the same rifle, absolutely love it 👍🤙 wish they'd release more of the 25rnd mags though, all I can get are the 10rnd currently 😢
People often disregard the .22lr as a defensive round. they say it doesn't have the "STOPPING POWER" to be a good self-defense round. I don't understand where these thought come from. I've been shot with a .22 lr, and I can tell you IT HURTS!!! Unless the person you're shooting is loaded up on drugs, getting shot with a .22 will make them stop to reassess their plans!
@liljackypaper Yeah he said it's not a good caliber for all defense cases like a crazed or drugged attacker. Which makes it a niche gun only for defending against mentally stable, clean cut attackers
"Better than nothing" is a poor expression. Bullets punch holes. The size of the hole is often irrelevant if vitals are damaged, and/or hemmoraging is significant. A .22 is as effective as the shooter makes it...just like any other caliber.
In Canada we don't have concealed carry. But I do own a S&W 422. And that shoots everything, no miss fire and is accurate. FYI, cleaned it in 20 years because my kids told me to.
It is absolutely better than a knife or a sharp stick. Lol I used to be a naive naysayer but when I thought about being shot with 22lr I quickly changed my thoughts on the caliber. Those who have trouble dealing with recoil impulses due to injuries or grip strength issues will find 22lr to be quite pleasant. My Taurus TX22 shockingly works great and id rather have my weaker loved ones use that to defend against great bodily harm or death than dialing 911 because "WHEN SECONDS COUNT POLICE ARE JUST MINUTES AWAY"
@@booya6437 Take a few properly aimed shots of 22lr hollow points to your chest and abdomen and come back to share your experience. If you aren't willing to take a few rounds of 22lr to prove your point then you've just made mines.
I like that you discuss some of the realistic considerations of self-defense shooting but feel like you should also mention that very often, just being on the receiving end of rounds is enough to make someone nope right tf out. There are a lot of videos of home defense shootings out there, and you'll see that almost every time somebody is breaking in or causing a scene, as soon as shooting starts, they run like crazy. Nobody likes taking rounds, and nobody is an action hero. So there's even another consideration in favor of .22, which is that most of the time, even if you don't put rounds where you want them, even if they don't penetrate the heavy coat, even if they don't put potentially lethal wounds on target, just by virtue of shooting a few rounds at somebody, you've got an extremely good chance of ending the confrontation anyway.
This is the correct line of thinking. Anyone that watches the Active Self protection channel knows that, as soon you start firing on perps, they run 99% of the time. I bet just firing a starters pistol would do the trick most of the time. Also, 22s are more lethal than most people think, for 2 reasons; They are very easy to get shots on target compared to almost anything else. The hand cannon is useless if none of your shots hit the target & even worse if you hit innocents with them. 22 rounds are very painful and a couple shots in the chest cavity will incapacitate a perp pretty fast. I used to drop large hogs with a 22 & they drop like a lead block when hit.
With todays technology, 22 federal punch out of extremely short barrels will still easily penetrate a thick winter coat and clear through vital organs. 22lr has the penetration needed.
@@gatorunleashed275 If you totally agree with this (100/100) and you acknowledge that any shots fired "almost always" puts the intruder on the run, isn't there some doubt in there? Arguing the merits of .22LR or any 5mm bullet in any cartridge and putting 100% of your agreement into them means you haven't experienced when they fail. And they fail enough for me to disagree.
@@thezoomguys385 setting up a well aimed shot on a baited hog with the intentions of doing so isn't the same any self defense scenario. This is a false equivalency. Watching ASP videos highlights two things. Brazil is not a place anyone wants to be and getting ready is harder than staying ready. Nobody can keep that up 24/7. I assure you.
If I was gonna carry .22 it'd be a TX22 with it's 16 round mag full of CCI Stingers. Saw a couple videos where the Stingers outperformed the mini-mags in reliability and penetration. Not trading my 9mm for it but it's a viable option.
I have a Ruger LCR 22 lr. It is very reliable and at 25 yards I am more accurate than with my Taurus g 3 c. What I have found is that some brands do not eject as well as others which is critical. CCI works well.
I carry 22lr for self defense and I can say that I am just as confident that it will function in my S&W M&P 22 Compact as I am in Glock’s that I used to own. I have 2 of these pistols, one for carry (and occasionally at the range) and the other for the range. I have literally never had a malfunction in either and that’s using some bulk ammo, but I mainly shoot CCI. I also have the M&P 15-22 like you do and I had a malfunction in the first magazine I ran but haven’t since. It’s not that I can’t shoot 9mm well or that I have any physical limitations, but I can suppress my 22’s at home and therefore I can practice in more realistic environments and conditions, whereas I am limited to an indoor range for my 9mm’s. Bottom line is that I am confident that it will work when I need it to and that I can get good hits quickly. Thanks for the video.
Great points on .22lr! For many years, my home defense consisted of a Marlin 60 and a Remington 1889 12-gauge. I didn't feel unarmed, and I think I would have grabbed the Marlin first. 'Swarm of bees effect' - I like that! Also worth considering are some of the effective .22wmr options. Not as cheap as .22lr, but considerably more powerful, and still permitting very fast follow-up shots right on the button.
Love this video! Been thinking about getting a 22 conceal carry for awhile for my wife who is smaller in stature and has a hard time with 9. I think you just convinced me to split it down the middle and get her a 380 with this video. Huge fan, keep up the great work!
I love my Taurus TX22 and have no issues at all with it and I use CCI Stinger ammo with it. I don’t use it for my EDC but it is the size of the Glock 19 and fun to practice with. Thanks for all the great content in your videos.
I have a Taurus 942. Concealable 2" barrel, 8 shots, single and double action with a light, smooth double action trigger. Excellent option for someone considering a 22lr handgun for carrying.
I also have one of those. It is damn near 100% if you use the right ammo. It likes the hot stuff. CCI mini mags, Aguila Super extra, etc. But my go-to is Federal Auto-Match. I shot an entire 325rd box with not a single failure.
@@DJ.1001 But it's not 100%. I've had my S&W 15/22 since 2009 when they came out. More than 10k rounds. Less than 15k. Probably closer to the latter. Well maintained. Still runs like a raped ape up a tree. I've used 36 gr CCI copper plated rounds designed specifically for AR style .22LR platforms. They've had the highest success rate. Still jams. I'm not grabbing a scoped low powered varmint rifle in the dead of night when I have a Glock 19 with a laser/light combo that has never jammed once.
I have many .22’s from 100 year old nail tack driver rifles to new semi-auto’s. The one I trust the most is my ( can’t wait for the negative responses) 30 year old Heritage Revolver with the magnum cylinder. Never had any issues in 10’s of thousands of rounds and I am very confident in its accuracy
I just had ours out at the range a couple days ago running .22lr...we also have the magnum cylinder, and while the gun might not be ideal, 6 rounds of .22wmr might be enough for many situations...one thing never mentioned is the size of the heritage can have the bad guy in his quick glimpse think it is a heavier caliber gun...we don't depend on our heritage these days, but another option always welcome...
We have the 6.5'" Heritage Rough Rider. We have shot over 3,000 rounds through it and It goes bang every time.we keep the 22.WMR cylinder loaded as our backup for our 38 cal.revolver for home defense. We have had ours 6 years and it is a great shooter and a lot of fun to take to the range.
Probably one of the better videos on YT about 22lr for self defense. Most don't go as in depth about the caliber itself or the firearm choices. I met an elderly man at the range a few years ago and he had the Ruger SR22, he was having issues with it so we took it apart and cleaned it (cleaning kit in my range bag) and reassembled it. I oiled it up and we shot over 100 rounds with no ftf or fte. It was pretty dirty and apparently he's been shooting it over the last year and a half and has never cleaned it. Said it was his first pistol. I can tell by his hands, he had really bad arthritis so I kind of already knew why he went with that gun and caliber. I let him shoot my M&P9 and he couldn't rack the slide on it so that was a dead giveaway. Upon discussion he had his doubts about the 22lr so I recommended he check out the M&P EZ the next time he's at the gun shop. It was a fun day, but it made me realize at that time, I have to remember some people have limitations so I can't dis someone for their choice of firearm or caliber for self protection without knowing the full story.
It was good of you to clean that gun...more than any other caliber .22 is dirty, and keeping the gun clean is a huge factor in reliability, especially the semi autos...I don't get the folks who don't clean their firearms but every blue moon, we depend on our firearms and keeping them clean adds an advantage...
I have watched some gel test done with 22lr and I was impressed with the penetration , is it a great ammo for protection no sir it is not. Good video with honest information . I own a few .22 lr firearms and enjoy shooting them .
As always, great insight. I have always been of the opinion that 22 is great for training. Marksmanship first and then clearing of malfunctions which happens way more often with a 22.
I have the .22LR Marlin Model 60. It had never jammed on me after shooting some rounds through it. But that's probably because my stepdad had good .22LR ammo. I have the bulk Winchester .22LR ammo right now, I worry my gun will jam. Winchester is not favorable to me for pistols, cause it jammed my Sig Sauer C3 1911. And my stepdad's Ruger P95 and Ruger SR9c. But it's still a really good rifle. My only complaint really is the bright plastic sights. I don't know why they didn't use steel.
I know from first hand experience that a 22lr to the head is capable of neutralizing a lot of critters even big ones. I carry 9mm but its hard to argue with the accuracy at distance of a many modern 22lr handguns. They are also getting more reliable all the time and increasing in capacity. Great Video! Have a nice day!
First gun I ever owned was a charter arms pathfinder in 22lr with a 3” barrel. I traveled thousands of miles with that revolver. If 22 is the only gun you have and you practice a lot and you use good ammo I have had good luck with it. Now I have a Smith and Wesson pre model 10 5 inch that I inherited and now that’s my main.
Back when I was a kid of 16, about 50 years ago, I owned one pistol. It was a Ruger Mk I Standard Auto with a 4 3/4 inch barrel. I naively loaded it up with CCI Stingers (then new on the market) and told myself I was well defended between plinking sessions. I then got a Mk II in 1983, and to this day, even though it has eaten thousands of them, it has yet to have a malfunction with a Stinger. It also feeds a lot of other things as well. I think if I was stuck with only a .22 pistol for defense, I'd load up that Mk II with some fresh Stingers as well as a spare magazine, and try to put my shots in the face below the brow line. After decades of shooting tiny targets the size of a quarter at distance successfully, I think I could probably pull that off. If I need something for longer distances, I have a nice 10/22 with a very good scope on it that works for me out to 150 yards. Since I'm now a city dweller, I don't worry about anything further out than that.
The M&P 15-22 is my favorite .22 to shoot this far. I don't have a .22 pistol yet. Can't stop looking into it, it goes both ways so much. I've watched a lot of your videos, just realized you're here in Iowa and your name is Kris/Chris. That's also my name and home state. I hit the sub button, love the channel! Mega jealous of your at home range!
Glad you did this video showing the pros and cons of 22LR. I have the M&P 15-22 and TX22. Both are very reliable with all ammo I've used. (Other than CCI Quiet -710fps which is understandable) I love the TX22 so much that I just bought another one for training with my wife and daughter. Agree 100% with your comments about training with a 22 to improve on marksmanship as this is exactly what I did. Thanks again for sharing.
Very fine focused discussion on the reality of .22 LR. Your coverage of a wide variety of platforms and the importance of ammunition is appreciated. Hope you had a great Christmas and hope you will have a fine New Year! Thanks sir.
I saw a podcast of a retired police officer/detective who recalls around 10 instances involving the 22 in his career. Each case resulting in a fatality! Great channel! 🤠
For my Taurus TX-22 I'm using any cheap ammo for target shooting, and CCI Stinger, CCI Velocitor or Federal Punch for self-defense. Absolutely cheapest training + very effective self-defense :) EASY!!! 👍😁
@Back In The Day 2 where did I say that? Your statement is the equivalent of me saying ‘if .22 isn’t so lethal, take a shot from one’ Fact of the matter is that no one wants to get shot with anything. A well placed .22 will end you.
@Back In The Day 2 there are zero gaurentees, whether one is using a .22 or a .45 or a flamethrower...however, as the 9mm or .45 has some advantage over the .22, so does the .22 have the advantage over someone without a firearm...I love my .45, it is never carried...the .22wmr is carried frequently...the logical deduction is the .22wmr is far more dangerous...
I’ve actually somewhat considered carrying my Sig 322. I only use CCI ammo and have yet to experience a malfunction…. Currently I own multiple 22’s. (A Ruger Mark 2 Target Bull Barrel / a Sig 322 / a Smith and Wesson Performance Center Model 41 / a Tippmann Arms M4 Elite Rifle)…
I have a P322 for sport shooting. I've shot hundreds of rounds without malfunction, but I've also seen it malfunction a few times while emptying ONE mag, when someone else was loading. Inspect the mags after loading and make sure the rounds look aligned properly.
Great video and thank you for a straight up video. Obviously a 22 is not powerful but it is a great caliber for certain uses. I have a Henry Golden Boy, a Walther p22 and a Ruger Wrangler. People visit me and at first shoot the Mini 14, my Glock 19 or the shot guns and even the Ruger PC Carbine thinking the 22s are wimpy or whatever but the 22s are the fun guns that you can plink all day on steel and they eventually see that (and not see dollar bills flying away with every shot)... Love your site and continue making great videos
Carried my tx22 for over a year and never had any problems while shooting. I was very surprised with that hun sadly I had to get rid of it but definitely going to be getting another one
I have the Taurus TX 22 which I carry and I've had zero problems with it and I use the cci bullets. It's not my only carry gun but it's pretty cool and very dependable I've shot over a thousand rounds through this gun with zero problems + I have 4 16 round magazines
Great vid as always man! I loved the explanation and your thinking around the situation of self defense, as well as the pointed statement about brandishing a weapon is not just a threat, but an escalation of force. Well put!
I carry an LCP II in .22 because it fits in my pocket and my job requires me to wear a shirt and tie all day. I feel comfortable in my particular work environment, so I can accept the fact that it's not the most reliable option. Were that to ever change then I'd likely make the switch to pocket carrying an LCP max.
That’s a nice gun. The Keltec P32 is a great pocket gun, too, very reliable, but not as nice as a Ruger for sure. The upside is 32 acp is center fire, the gun costs under 200, and weighs 6.6 oz empty. It’s my back up gun and sweat pants option.
We don't trust our lcp ll 101%, so it is never carried, but it is much better than harsh words...our lightest carry is .22wmr in a revolver, but it is heavier, bulkier than the lcp ll...my brother carries that keltec, says he likes it...on rare occasion the NAA is the best option, and even then .22 has everyone unarmed outgunned...
@@rodneyalaking8241 I'd stick with the P32 as it's a tiny bit smaller but weighs much less than the LCR 22lr. Downside is the extreme differential in ammo prices. The 32 in that tiny barrel will still net you 120 lb-ft of force while the 22 out of the LCR's barrel will get you into the 80s with high velocity ammo. Plus the biggest issue is the 32 round being centerfire has better reliability overall.
I love how I can tune to this channel and listen to an argument that's been around the block before and be entertained. I think the engagement here is sublime and we'll informed. Keep up the great work and happy holidays! Just a quick note that I've seen from other channels; there can be burnout - with that said, if you need to take a vacation; please do so. I think one of my big draws is that there's several videos a week from this channel - this is great! However, I think I speak for most when I say we'd rather have Mr. And Mrs. Outlaw giving great content for years to come than one day quitting on us. Happy 2023!
So many great call outs. Learning with a 22 is good, rats, raccoons, possums, and ground hogs is another good tool for them as well. Learning how to do 2-3 round shots helps as well. I see too many people that will take 1 shot and have to mentally regroup, if that is the correct term? Great video as always. Merry Christmas to you and your family Sir.
Intelligent people would consider the seriousness of the wound they just received, yes, that could make them "mentally regroup". However, perps are usually either not the brightest, or, have consumed something that definitely impaired their cognitive functions in order to welp, pull through with whatever illegal thing they were planning. Cheers and Merry Christmas.
I always, always, always milk my range time with about 100 rounds of .22 (either through my Rough Rider or single shot Ruger rifle). Great way to let off some steam or simply screw around with practicing your aim.
I know there have been quite a few videos on this topic, but as always, your coverage is balanced and practical. Sure, people love to argue about this, but it depends who you are. I have thought about my mom, who was talking about getting a CCW in the last couple of years, and my FN 502 would be pretty ideal for her (especially if they made a subcompact grip). Almost 1000 rounds and two failures to feed with a variety of ammo. Benefit to a newbie is ease of shooting and non-intimidating (the mom case), and anyone can put 15 rounds on target extremely quickly without your ears ringing into deafness. Thanks for another great video.
IMHO a .22 semi auto with a laser/flashlight combo is ideal for inside home defense. Low noise, less chance of collateral damage. Low cost allows for more practice too. My 10/22 and S&W Compact are very reliable with Mini Mags. Just as important we use the alarm system and the house is always well lit, inside and out. Thanks for sharing.
Chris, must say, one of your best videos. Benefits, the limitations, all the cautions, and more. As for 22LR for training? Fantastic. I hunt a lot. I try to be sharp on my bolt action. I begin with a 22 CZ 457, with a scope like my deer and hog gun. Fundamentals the Army instilled, sight alignment sight picture, breath control, squeeze the trigger, call the shot. Once I am tuned up, then the hunting rifle. Same drill, then different positions. You say it a lot, it is true, fundamentals. They must be sharp and followed. A 22LR is good training, if done right.
Trigger time is trigger time, no substitute for it...what works shooting .22 works in every other caliber...we shoot mass quantities of. 22, and your points do carry over to heavier calibers...
.22 is a fantastic way to learn, I agree with everything you said about it, but I’m a little disappointed you didn’t cover .22 MAG and the options there
22 mag has the same basic pros and cons as 22lr. I will say your selection for good defensive bullets are better, and 22 mag is obviously more powerful. But you're still dealing with a rimfire cartridge, and a more expensive one at that
I've been carrying a Ruger Wrangler in my bag more and more lately. I'd like to have a Glock or 1911, but Massachusetts doesn't like glocks and I can't afford a quality 1911, so this is the best thing I've got for now. But I'm happy to say it's comfortable and easy to use, so I'm more confident having it with me than nothing at all.
The Wrangler satisfies rule #1, have a gun, but i sincerely recommend a double action revolver for .22, there are several models from different manufacturers you might consider...my reasoning is simple, even the best available .22 ammo can go 'click' instead of Bang at the crucial moment...with a double action you simply squeeze the trigger again, the fastest, most natural reaction, and back to back dud rounds would be rare...plus, some of the double action revolvers are chambered for 7,8,9, even 10 rounds (8 seems most common), where a few extra rounds can't hurt...we own a 1911, it has never been carried, simply because of the size/weight of the gun...we have carried a Taurus 942, 8 rounds of .22 magnum (the .22lr version would be equally effective), and felt okay with it...the bright side of the Wrangler is if ever pulled in anger the actual size of the gun gives it the appearance of a .44 magnum (no one studies the size of the bore being actively pointed at them), and the gun would be reasonably accurate...we own a single action, and in a 'pinch' it is nowhere near as fast (or simple) as a double action...
there are a lot of other quality guns, you know. some also made by ruger, like the lcp (which i think costs less than the wrangler does) and security-9/380
@@PelemusMcSoy glocks tend to work reliably...offer a choice of calibers and sizes...we've never owned one, but the reputation has been earned...be careful out here...
Revolvers in 22lr are excellent for edc(DAO, hammerless snubbies) LCR22lr or a s&w43c. 8 shots of federal punch will give you more than enough penetration to immediately stop a target. Shot placement is key no matter the caliber. Also with rimfire revolvers, the hammer forces way more pressure on the rim of the primer compared to a semiauto= increased reliability. Check out Rhett over at demonstrated concepts, he breaks it all down.
Yeah, when rounds don't ignite in our autos they are sent to our revolvers, rotated, re-hit with about a 99% success rate...every now and then a round is a true dud...
@@davisjames8484the “boulders” have to hit the target though without having a FTF, FTE, and harder follow up shots. Modern day self defense 22lr ammo still gets 15”+ of penetration. Don’t underestimate “ants” lol
I'm just starting the video. My take has always been "It makes holes. It makes noise. Both can make bad guys stop doing bad guy things. It'll do okay." Now I get to see what someone smart thinks about it.
Got almost 10k rounds through my 12.5 tippmann. Pretty much all cci. Barely ever a malfunction. Would feel totally confident using it for self defence.
I got a single shot .22 rifle when I was 8yrs old. It shot lr, l, shorts, and mini caps. Back in the seventy and eighty’s when 22 long rifle was cheap, I would buy every time it was on sale. I’ve got around 70 to 75 thousand rounds. It’s still fun to shoot. Rifle, pistol, revolver. My S&W model 17 with 8 3/8 barrel is super accurate with most brands of ammo.
22lr semi automatic handguns have come a long way for carry/ self defense however, reliability in even top of the line ammo I will not carry 22lr whatsoever. It's not for me but there are those that are unable to shoot anything larger. Training and practice does a lot... Great video, thanks man. Stay safe God Bless✌🇺🇲 And a Merry Christmas to you and yours.
And there are those who are able to shoot a larger caliber who prefer to carry 22lr. BTW, an 8-shot 22lr lcr revolver is more reliable than a typical 9mm semi-auto. It is cheaper to practice on and become more proficient. Federal Punch ammo has changed the game on adequate penetration out of short barrels.
Ruger SR22, one of the smallest, therefore easiest to conceal 22s. Added a fiber optic front sight, steel guide rod, and plus 3 Magguts spring and follower to my magazines, CCI ammunition. Not my daily carry, but there's just something sweet about it.
The sr22 is almost the exact same size as the Sig p365xl. If size is your thing, today there are several handguns in competent calibers that are just as small
Why the steel guide rod? And I'm not familiar with the Maggust spring and follower; what does this provide that is not provided by the regularly aspirated factory magazine? Thanks!
@@richarde1355 A steel guide rod adds a degree of reliability, they are inexpensive. The Magguts spring and follower is able to add 3 more rounds to the magazine capacity from the factory 10. There is some wasted space with the stock follower, and the aftermarket spring adds a little more tension for positive feeding.
Ammo is key. I stumbled upon CCI 22LR Tactical 40 gr plated round nose 1200 fps - at 1800 rounds only 1 failure in my 10/22 and SR22. I've gotten it as cheap as 9 cents with free shipping. The CCI mini Mag 40 gr plated round nose @1235 fps is also good. 300 rounds in the pistol, so far OK. At home, I keep 1 mag in the SR22 with Federal Punch 29gr. Don't ask why, I have no answer. For self defense at home - closest and loaded. Merry Christmas to both of you and the 10 degrees you sent to Georgia has arrived. 🥶
+1 for a 22 revolver. Also, my S&W Victory with Federal Automatch is very reliable...if you develop good cleaning habits. Not sure if it was mentioned but the noise and muzzle flash from something like my Victory or a Ruger Mark series would be much better tolerated indoors than say your typical 9mm.
I love .22LR it's my favorite round for all of the reasons you mentioned in the video, BUT for self defense I train with and carry my Sig Sauer 9mm & sometimes carry a small.22 loaded with Federal Punch ammo for a backup gun.

I have my MP 15-22, setup pretty much the same! CCI has never failed me, I’ve ran hundreds of rounds. I have a full mag of stingers for home defense. I’m still breaking in my ar9, so until then, the 15-22 is my go to.
I like what you said...one other minor advantage to .22LR as defense round- in the home- lower chance of over penetration- of course there are more cons like the chance that your intruder is probably in very close quarters and if you don't put him down quickly the chances of things going sideways are good. Still I like the swarm of bees in some situations- I prefer the .22 in conjuction with someting else. BTW I really like the way you respect your viewers.
I'm no advocate for .22 being a self defense caliber outside of point blank, but the bad guy isn't necessarily going to politely ask what caliber you're going to shoot at them. No matter if it's .22 or .500 Magnum, getting hit by angry lead isn't fun. Definitely use what you can, but definitely upgrade when the funds allow for it.
22lr has the advantage of rapid fire with no recoil and many more bullets in the clip. It's still powerful enough to go through walls and stop people permanently. But yeah, a bigger bullet would obviously have advantages too
22LR will stop most people in their track. Enough time to get away or open your distance between them. These arm chair cowboys always think size matters. If you choose semi auto make sure it’s double action. Gives you the ability to double tap it or more to get it to fire… if not grip and rip. Load the next one in. Which is super easy with the sr22. 90 year old with arthritis can rack one. Why I chose the SR22 Ruger… 👍
I agree. I rarely get a failure to fire in my sr22, but a second hit almost always fires it. Great gun.
The best feature of the sr-22 is it’s hammer fired… I have much better luck with hammer vs striker fired… great pistol.
I love mine, it is also a great gun for training the next generation.

Love this channel. Just a fun low key production with great content, great humor and some genuine insight.

I have 400 rounds thru my tx22 and it still runs fine
That may well be...your gun is filthy, there is no such thing as 'clean' .22...no big deal on the range, but if you Depend on that gun for anything, you are not being smart to rely on a dirty firearm, of any caliber...

This made me a little more confident in using my 15-22 for home defense. I was also shocked at how reliable it is.

Yes totally agree with this, any shot fired almost always puts the intruder on the run.
If I was gonna carry .22 it'd be a TX22 with it's 16 round mag full of CCI Stingers. Saw a couple videos where the Stingers outperformed the mini-mags in reliability and penetration. Not trading my 9mm for it but it's a viable option.
You have a much higher chance of shaking loose the primer compound from the rim if you're using .22 as edc. Most folks don't think about this.

The 22LR Glock conversion kit works pretty well. Makes for extremely light gun, esp for yardwork.
Stingers are the best 22 ammo I have found
I won't bother to post here. You'd sue me for plagiarism! My scenario and thoughts exactly! I'm about your age too!
I have listened to a lot of 22 videos about self-defense. This one is the best I've seen.
Wouldn't be my first choice, but I would highly doubt any robber or bad guy would keep coming in a hail of 22 fire.
Man and 25 rounds with that Sig .22lr
No one will say ‘he’s just got a 22 get him’…no one.
The mp15-22 is a great rifle. It's our go-to rifle at home simply because it's the only rifle my wife will grab and shoot without hesitation.
Agree! Eliminate hesitancy and you increase likelihood of survival in a critical situation exponentially
Same. I have my AR9 in case of an emergency and she has her 15-22.
Mine jams all the time
@@jackripper6033 dang that's crazy. Mine eats everything. No telling how many rounds I've ran through it.
@@jackripper6033 tried different ammo...?
For my Taurus TX-22 I'm using any cheap ammo for target shooting, and CCI Stinger, CCI Velocitor or Federal Punch for self-defense.
Absolutely cheapest training + very effective self-defense :) EASY!!! 👍😁
Shot placement is everything
@Back In The Day 2 where did I say that?
Your statement is the equivalent of me saying ‘if .22 isn’t so lethal, take a shot from one’
Fact of the matter is that no one wants to get shot with anything.
Do you have the 25 round magazine?
MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL! May we have a better year than the previous one we're leaving, and may all have a GREAT and WONDERFUL NEW YEAR. BE JOYOUS ALL!

For the amount of people who talk down on .22 -- I still don't ever see volunteers to be shot by one.
Bingo.
I don't see people volunteering to be shot with a spitball either, but that doesn't mean you should carry a straw for self defense.
Bad argument. I don’t want to get shot by a bb gun either, but that doesn’t make it an effective choice for self defense.
@@Do_the_workbro a BB probably won’t even break the skin, a .22 can penetrate and screw you up good.
@@princez.2648 most 177 and up air rifles shoot over 1000fps and are lethal to humans especially wild animals
I think they are a valuable option for people (like myself) for have limited or very limited use of their hands. I sometimes edc my 22
Carried my tx22 for over a year and never had any problems while shooting.
Mine runs well and shoots accurately with 36 gr Mini Mags
Everything worth shooting once is worth shooting twice, then remember...everybody worth shooting twice is good for thrice
So nice to see you are supporting YSS in Ames, IA.
.22 is a fantastic way to learn, I agree with everything you said about it, but I’m a little disappointed you didn’t cover .22 MAG and the options there
22 mag has the same basic pros and cons as 22lr.
Thank you both for the replies! I'm in a better state now, so I'm likely going to pick up a Glock soon. =)
@@PelemusMcSoy glocks tend to work reliably...offer a choice of calibers and sizes...we've never owned one, but the reputation has been earned...be careful out here...

That MP15-22 is a BEAST ....
3000 rounds of CCI AR Tacticals .... 100% fire rate
I'd rather have violent boulders being thrown at my assailant than some ants.
@@davisjames8484the “boulders” have to hit the target though without having a FTF, FTE, and harder follow up shots. Modern day self defense 22lr ammo still gets 15”+ of penetration. Don’t underestimate “ants” lol
Thanks agree. I'm tired of the 22 lr videos that go like this: 22 is great but, but but...
22 doesn't give you enough power to stop a threat.
I'm just starting the video. My take has always been "It makes holes. It makes noise. Both can make bad guys stop doing bad guy things. It'll do okay." Now I get to see what someone smart thinks about it.
Bought a used Taurus 94 for 200 about 5 years ago. It's a nine shot revolver. Never had an issue. Nice to load lr, shorts, shot shell, whatever...

More than me. But I did trade 22 ammo for guns in the last shortage. Plan ahead folks...you amass alot and you always get the best price.
22lr semi automatic handguns have come a long way for carry/ self defense however, reliability in even top of the line ammo I will not carry 22lr whatsoever. It's not for me but there are those that are unable to shoot anything larger. Training and practice does a lot...
Great video, thanks man. Stay safe God Bless✌🇺🇲
And a Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Over 3000 rounds in my SR22 and no dead rounds. I've had one stovepipe. Great little gun.
@@tomkuhl4770 Thanks for educating me!

The other is a scam
I like what you said...one other minor advantage to .22LR as defense round- in the home- lower chance of over penetration- of course there are more cons like the chance that your intruder is probably in very close quarters and if you don't put him down quickly the chances of things going sideways are good. Still I like the swarm of bees in some situations- I prefer the .22 in conjuction with someting else. BTW I really like the way you respect your viewers.
On the up side, that burgler/home invader just hears gunfire. He doesn’t know your shooting a 22.
Also I don't care who the attacker is. If you unload 10 or 15 22 CCI straight into them, they're not gonna keep coming at you.

I can guarantee that NONE of the people in this chat have ever encountered a self defense situation especially the red head that made this video.
