  • UNEP, the Global Partnership on Marine Litter (GPML) and GRID-Arendal will hold a side event during the twenty first session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) on 5 May at 9am EST. The side event entitled “End plastic pollution - traditional, indigenous and local knowledge” will present an overview of the UNEA resolution 5/14, highlight the importance of traditional knowledge, knowledge of indigenous peoples and local knowledge systems and invite participants to contribute to the process to end plastic pollution.
We are pleased to announce that the groundbreaking resolution 5/14 entitled “End plastic pollution: towards an international legally binding instrument”, adopted at the resumed session of the fifth United Nations Environment Assembly in March 2022, highlights the great importance of traditional knowledge, knowledge of indigenous peoples and local knowledge systems. More specifically, the intergovernmental negotiating committee, established through the above-mentioned resolution, is tasked to consider traditional knowledge, knowledge of indigenous peoples and local knowledge systems throughout the development of an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution including in the marine environment.
In order to support this process, UNEP, the Global Partnership on Marine Litter (GPML) and GRID-Arendal are conducting a survey to collect information on tackling marine litter and plastic pollution through indigenous knowledge systems and using nature-positive solutions.
In this regard we would like to invite you to submit information on tackling marine litter and plastic pollution through indigenous knowledge systems through an online questionnaire.
Besides informing the intergovernmental negotiating committee on traditional knowledge, knowledge of indigenous peoples and local knowledge systems to consider throughout their deliberations, submissions will be recognized and showcased through the GPML digital platform.
