- Before JJ Abrams came on board for Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Collin Trevorrow was slated to direct his own version, Duel Of The Fates. Vastly different to the Episode 9 that we ended up with it included no Emperor Palpatine, his Master Tor Vallum (using concepts from a cut character from the JJ version) more Rise Tico and General Leia, a double sided lightsaber for Rey, Kylo Ren as the main protagonist and about the same amount of the Knights Of Ren we actually got. There’s also a Finn Stormtrooper uprising plot that unfortunately I cut due to time and money constraints. Yeah, that’s the odd thing trying to make a new teacher, because darth plagueis was palpatine’s teacher. Seemed as if Trevorrow forgot about the rule of 2, that there can only be two Sith Lords. No more, no less. And it would’ve been dumb to introduce this guy only to have him get killed by Kylo.

And this script was written in 2016, if they kept this one the 'awkward' bits could have been reorganized or thrown out in the editing process. But instead we got the Rise of Skywalker.

You're basically right. Taking the Duel of the Fates script and retooling it could have made a really solid finale. I honestly feel like the only reason it was thrown out and replaced with a new script entirely is due to ego.
Never realized how sick a Bossk cameo would have been until now.
In the script he was "in his den of pleasures" and got angry when his servant droid shows leia message.
I have a completely random hunch supported by no evidence that Bossk or Dengar will show up in the Book of Boba Fett show

The potential is there. In a world bound by the Force, where Jedi Younglings train with blinding helmets on, blind swordsmen are the ultimate Jedi Masters.
My thoughts:
- I was wishing they'd have used an already existing Sith world instead of Exagol. But Mortis would've been really cool to see again, especially with the whole balance of the Force theme going on here.
- The beacon of Coruscant would've been a handy, less nebulous device for bringing together resistance forces for the big space battle.
- Hux: * coughs/cackles * Another lightsaber to add to my collection!
- Kylo's redemption would've been even more rushed in this version.
- At least there's some reference to Mandalore in this: Kylo reconstructing his face with beskar. I feel like Mandalorians have played a big enough role in the conflicts of the past that they shouldn't have been ignored in the sequel trilogy. Besides, they're just cool.
Agreed on the rushed Kylo Ren stuff. Wasn’t even thinking of it because I was liking everything else around it.
I think, a way to make his redemption more believable is to:
1. Establish that Kylo thinks Darth Vader and Anakin are two different people (and you explain why Anakin's name is never spoken in the trilogy)
2. Have Kylo not to be that of an a*hole to Rey
3. Have Luke not tell Kylo he isnt a Skywalker
4. Have a scene were Leia is sad for fighting a war against her own son
5. Have Anakin (or Anakin and Leia) make Kylo change his mind
I was really hoping for Korriban or Byss. But honestly, if this means neither of them are stained by being associated with that movie, I'm okay with it.

The animation is great, the music fits, and it's a short comedy spoof which glosses over or ignores some of the weirder parts of the original script.
Also, you're probably comparing it to the 2 and a half hour long slog we got instead of something in a similar vein.. like... HISHE which is also short, animated, and full of spoofy goodness =]
It’s because all the sequel movies were okay just people cry so much over fake space battles that it gets ruined

Oh boy, if they went with Hayden Christensen fighting Kylo in that cave scene as a call back to his younger, angry state it would have been so cool to see. Almost a reflection of where Kylo was heading. Kylo seeing a Hayden/Vader around the same age as himself beating him easily, would have frustrated him to the point of acting out agressively. It plays on Kylo's thoughts of not being good enough, hence the action of force draining the master out of anger.

I’m torn. Parts of it sound cool, other parts sound even more fan-servicey-y than what we got. Not too into that. But still really cool to see what could’ve been, especially in animated form!

I had that thought when hearing about the Tusken Disguise. It feels weird that there would be a lone Tusken traveling the galaxy Tatooine, let alone casually walking around a First Order prison. If it was an Officer or Stormtrooper diguise, then she'd be less out-of-place
This is, at a minimum, television level animation, and I would definitely watch a movie in this animation style

The Poe/Rey romance is REALLY out of nowhere. Trevorrow seems to love that awful trope where you have the buttoned-up, no-nonsense woman and the laid-back, roguish, rule-breaking man, and they are constantly bickering with each other but also have the hots for each other. If you read the whole Trevorrow treatment the Poe/Rey relationship is basically a beat for beat rehash of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard in Jurassic World.

Did Rey and Poe interact AT ALL before Rise of Skywalker...? I read the leaked script, and the opening takes place on a first order ruled mining planet. theres a bunch of different species there, and the population lives in a huge market area. She was dressed like that to blend in on the planet. They eventually escape on a first order ship though.

All of these are so shit, and thank god the Jurassic world director didn’t get to touch Star Wars.
Having said that, The Rise of Skywalker is not good. I don’t like it much, there are only a few scenes that I enjoy. But there’s no second of Duel of the Fates that I like.

I think the movie would have been much, much better than ROS.
First of all, Rey's character would have actually had an arc and followed the path the previous film established for her, which I think is interesting. Rather than being a literal prophet or a fated hero like the two precedent trilogies, she's basically nobody. It's fitting tor star wars, to know that a strong force user could come from anywhere. She uses a double bladed lightsaber using the remnants of Luke's saber, not only following with the consequences of it braking in the last movie, but also making sense for her fighting form as she's used a stick before using a lightsaber. I love the fact she ends up blind; much like Luke and Anakin, she endure physical dismemberment and definitely isn't a Mary sue here.
Kylo is the vilain here and he's actually threatening like the previous movie set him up to be, rather than relegated to just a side vilain again like in ROS (and THANK GOD palpatine doesn't somehow return). And he has a redemption too at the end, hinted at throughout the script (though I don't know how it would have been executed). Plus, Tor Vallum isn't palpatine's master. The script says he's the master of Plagueis.
Finn finally getting to do something by rallying everyone to his side is amazing and a great sendoff to his character.
Other stuff I think would have been cool is the way they manage to send the message through the galaxy by using coruscant, rather than... Somehow, managing to bring everyone back together. The Final fight happening on mortis is thematically accurate, Luke ACTUALLY haunts Ben like he said he would, Rose doesn't cease to exist all together, the knights of Ren becoming a bit more important and essential to Ray's character and R2 telling the entire story of star wars, as a reward for him being there at all times.
Don't forget that this was just the first draft. It's entirely possible that some of the dumber elements would've been changed or removed from the final cut (which would've had to be very different anyway due to Carrie Fisher's death).
kind of crazy that this is sort of the most complete version of this version of the movie that exists.
It does make soooo much more sense as a continuation of The Last Jedi and ties back into a lot of clone wars.
The Last Jedi may not be the best movie, but I gotta give it credit for continuing what The Force Awakens set up. This is miles better than The Rise of Skywalker just because it goes along with what was established.

Rey learning to balance the light and the darkness would have been such an interesting story beat. That bit about the sith and jedi never really achieving peace because they'll always been fighting is spot on. If Rey and Ben had both lived, they could have learned to balance the two sides of the force, and finally bring a lasting peace. But nah, that would be too interesting.

I have read the whole script of Colin's Star Wars 9... And I must say: I am just baffled why Disney chose JJ's script over it. TRoS is a spiritless, uninspired, gameplay-esque film that was just executed horibbly.

Well it's not like they chose between two finished scripts. They scrapped this and gave Therio and Abrams the job of coming up with something better (while still keeping some elements). It's only with the benefit of hindsight do we realize that they actually came up with something way worse.

?? Palpatine’s return is possibly the worst decision made in cinematic history. I would take anything over it. Why did JJ think that was a good idea. Palpatine’s death solidified Anakins redemption, but oh never mind he’s back with 5000 Death Star Star destroyers and an army of red stormtroopers. Also the pacing in TROS is atrocious. This movie did so many things wrong and I would take almost anything over it
Brendan Fitzpatrick to be fair, the legends canon had the same idea of palpatine being alive and the fans were hella fine with it so....
I don't know why this ended up on my recommended, but I'm glad it did. The animation is so good here! I hope you do more of these! 👍
This version fixes several huge problems in tros:
1. Rey is no longer a Mary Sue.
2. Kylo is more intimidating and a better villain.
3. Palpatine stays dead.
4. No more Death Star beams.
5. Building upon the message of TLJ (killing the past, etc.) instead of giving it the middle finger whenever possible. While I didn’t like TLJ, I don’t think trying to erase it in the very last episode was a wise choice.
I definitely like some elements of this version! No Palpatine and seeing some Dark Side training would've been cool. The double-sided lightsaber made more sense too, since Rey had a bo staff from the beginning. On the other hand, had this version not been cancelled, we wouldn't have gotten this amaaaaazing animation. Well done!
In a alternative reality we would have gotten a leaked JJ Abrams script.

Had they constructed the last film to actually focus on the middle ground, whether they used the Grey Jedi or whatever else, that would've honestly allowed me to forgive a lot of the nonsense that this trilogy shoved down our throats. That could've at least allowed them to genuinely bill this as the final film of the saga, with true balance being brought to the Force. As it is, they left so much wiggle room for Rey and Co. to return about 20-30 years down the road for episodes 10-12.
@Charlie Vetsworth true Ben wasn't exactly on the light side in the end the only thing really mentioned to why he stopped is love and love is the most neutral thing in the force.
The rise of skywalker didn't discontinue it just because the next order will most probably be jedi (have they even said they'll be called jedi?) doesn't mean there won't be a new sense of individuality and some sort of spectrum of balance. Two movies explored it one didn't make any big jumps but there's nothing saying oh never mind lol.
With what we've seen on the Dark Side of the Force the middle ground or Gray Jedi can't be a thing. The Dark Side corrupts and can't be balanced. I mean it's the Sith, the Dark Side that's all about killing people and causing problems for the galaxy. It's not right to just roll over let that happen. It's interesting in theory, but the way it's been explained that the Force works in canon it can't be a thing.
@@NightmareTroubador that's absolutely not how it's explained the Sith are evil because their order. The nightsisters use the dark side yet they're not inherently evil. This is not a theory and grey jedi are a stupid thing because the force was always said to be inherently neutral so people can bend anyway they want while being good. The Sith don't own the dark side and the jedi don't own the light. The way it's explained it could definitely work because as luke said the force doesn't belong to the jedi. The dark side isn't about killing people it's about emotion and passion things that have redeemed people before.

Maybe one day we will but this was the first draft. They need to fix some things and then somehow make the actors come back. Right now only Daisy says that she would come back if they needed her. So yeah, that's pretty difficult

If there’s one thing I wanted more the anything else it was for Rey to have a saber staff
I mean literally in the first fight she’s in in the force awakens she’s using some kind of staff weapon, and I always thought that if she ever had to make her own lightsaber she’s make a saber staff. Otherwise with her using anakin/Luke’s old lightsaber she feels extremely samey, and I think giving her a saber staff would have helped her stand out. At the VERY LEAST she should have had a different colored saber for 9

Well in the novelization it was confirmed she was working on one, and the saber Dark Rey had was what the saber staff would have been, just a different color.
It's almost like Rian Johnson including the splitting of Luke's lightsaber in The Last Jedi perfectly set up her remaking it into a double bladed staff. But, no, it is inexplicably repaired and its destruction is never mentioned.

@@Arcin00 I mean, he left on the initial stages. Until the release, there would have been private screenings (Just like ROS. I mean, they reshoot a Lot after the private screening) and reshots. I'm not so sure wether the movie would be good or not, but the fact that it was less "Macguffin and Deus ex Machina" than the actual movie made It better for me at least.

In all honesty, with a few rewrites, I think this version would have been a lot better than the film got. I love the idea of Kylo being irredeemable, Rey's double bladed lightsaber, Luke haunting Kylo, and the final battle on Coruscant. Also, let's be honest, we all would have freaked out, in the theater, if we got that scene of Ghost Luke grabbing Kylo's lightsaber. Only thing they should remove is Rey and Poe. That's just no.
Rey and Finn would make more sense.

Jar Jar Abrams confirmed that Finn is Force sensitive, so at least this one should become canon.
Rey's saber staff however....what a tragedy to not give her a weapon like that....I mean, it's a minor grudge compared to the huge plotholes and number of wasted characters in TROS but still, it was a crime to not let her build a goddamn saber staff.

Couple details left out:
The Star Destroyer they stole was the SSD Eclipse from Legends complete with superweapon (though not as strong as in legends, but it does take down several massive capital ships over coruscant)
And the shipyard they steal it from was Kuat
They also left out another tiny detail... how the hell did Rey slip past all of the Imperial forces in a Tuskan Raider disguise? WTF kind of sense does that make lol

@@CLUN_k except in that instance there was no way to disguise Chewie so the pretended he was a prisoner while Han and Luke were dressed as stormtroopers. See that makes sense, because they're on a Death Star full of stormtroopers. You expect to see stormtroopers walking around a Death Star, escorting a prisoner.
There is no logical reason for a Tuskan Raider to be walking around a First Order prison base, full of stormtroopers, by themself. Bare bones or not, why include that little detail of her disguise when it makes zero sense.
I could go on, the whole script is full of bad ideas. It's a mess that shows Colin Trevorrow doesn't know anything about the source material. Or I should say he doesn't understand it.
@@craven1927 as someone who writes scripts for my friend's game company, this is not by any means a complete script. Writers will throw in as much detail that will be changed or removed as possible so that when they go to write a more coherent or straightforward version they can see what their thought process was and how they envisioned the scene, that Tuscan raider could very well turn into a bounty hunter working for the first order. Don't pass judgment to early
@@craven1927 So after actually reading the script they're on a planet used by the first order for fueling and not a 'first order prison base'.
This planet is full of migrant aliens all of which are poor and starving. The script describes quite a few different species so its not too farfetched to see a tusken raider there.
You also need to note that this is an early script, a lot of these issues may have been tweaked later on down the line.
Regardless, even if that was the case and Rey was on a First Order prison base, she has every reason to be in disguise, Kylo Ren is hunting her, he wants her dead.
If she's going to save her friends (people she has pointed out time and time again, and even further so in this script, that she loves and cares for) and assuming the only way to get to them is to be imprisoned herself, why wouldn't she disguise herself?
She's literally walking into enemy territory as one of the most wanted people in the galaxy...
If you want to talk about not understanding the source material than may I suggest actually reading the script first as you clearly just watched this video and assumed it was written word for word as it was in script.
Seriously, you're allowed to hate the sequels but I don't know what makes people pretend flaws exist when they literally don't.
Jokes aside i would've LOVED to get this movie instead of RoS. It sounds like it was actually planned out and The Rey getting a Double Bladed Lighsaber part is Really great (Plus in this they ACTUALLY gave a Reason for why Kylo has a new Helmet and it looks even cooler than before)

There’s a lot of very clumsy stuff that James didn’t mention that definitely feels out of place but I’ll agree it feels more like a call and response to the last Jedi than closing your ears and yelling a story that doesn’t even mesh with the story you already wrote.
Don’t get me wrong I’m a big fan of the look of Kylo’s helmet but it’s strange to me that they said “Kylo’s mask represents his insecurities and childishness. We need to remove it to symbolize his growth” and both versions decided uhh nope theme is for nerds and helmets are cool.

I think it still has A LOT of weird issues but I'd much rather start with this as a starting ground then RoS. Like it'd be much easier to improve this version
