"Did you know they actually reprise the Imperial March here??" Um, it's a theme everyone has heard dozens of times in their lives and it's the melody here, so yes?
I don’t like how the Disney films use the Force theme like it’s the main theme of Star Wars. It could work, aside from the fact that there is already a theme for Star Wars literally called “Main Title” that plays at the beginning of each movie.

I have zero doubt that the score in the prequels is a big part of why fans like me are so forgiving with them. The worldbuilding is imaginative, the music is fantastic, the good moments are great, the bad moments are funny-bad, and the wider narrative is up there with the OT if you can get past its clumsy execution.
I've always thought they were flawed but they were great star wars movies, and that's something disney can't do is make star wars movies. They can just make movies.
Tbh the older i get the less critical i get of them and the more i accept them for what they are. The OT actually looks more basic nowadays tbh. I usually put on 1-3 if i want to watch star wars.

They're both wrong, actually. "Binary Sunset," or whatever you want to call it, is actually (as I see it) the Hero's Journey Theme for ANH. Since ANH was originally just "Star Wars" and it was likely going to be a standalone movie, Williams needed a way to convey Luke's journey throughout the movie. If you think about it that way, the music makes so much more sense in the context of both the Binary Sunset scene and the Throne Room scene: the former represents Luke's longing for adventure and the unknown world, and the latter represents Luke's triumphant return to the known world. It even shows up in other pivotal points for the Hero's Journey, such as Obi-Wan's (the "mentor's") introduction and "the abyss" where every other ship has been destroyed in the trench run and there are more seconds before the Death Star blows ups the Rebel Base. I really don't understand why nobody else sees this.
Even if the movie was made to be standalone, the Force plays a role throughout the film. It plays when Obi Wan is introduced because he is a Force wielder, an agent of the Force. Much like “Vader’s Theme” is really the Imperial March, but is heard when Vader is on the screen because he is an agent of the Empire. One could argue that the Force theme could also play for Vader, but it could also be said that Vader’s allegiance to the Empire outweighs his use of the Force. As for why the Force theme plays during the trench run, that’s because Obi Wan speaks to Luke through the Force and because Luke uses the Force to help guide the proton torpedoes. The reason it plays during the binary sunset theme is because Luke is considering the consequences of leaving Tatooine, and the Force helps guide Luke down the path that will eventually restore balance to the Force (kind of). That said, I see how it could be thought of as a “Hero’s Journey Theme”, both ideas work.
@@nosher0267 He's not wrong. The original intent in annotations for the score state that it was to serve as Obi-Wan's theme. Then it evolved into the general Force theme.
Hollywood status quo hated Lucas for being succesful doing his own thing. On the other hand they now pander to Disney who finally owns the damn thing while George is retired.

I do think Qui-Gon Jinn vs Darth Maul was a true duel of the fates. Palpatine knew that only Qui-Gon was powerful enough to train Anakin, the chosen one, without him being tempted towards the darks side. With Qui-Gon's death the Jedi Order's fate was sealed.
I think it was Dave Filoni who actually confirmed it. Really fitting it being duel of the fates, if Qui-Gon wins Anakin will be the Jedi Orders saviour. If Maul wins, he would be its downfall
not more powerful but just more experienced and he knew what anakin was going through more than obi wan. qui gon was the father anakin needed but instead he got a brother in obi wan and a new father figure in Palpatine
Honestly I can’t be mad at the romance dialogue in the prequels for two reasons 1. I love the prequels and choose to overlook their flaws (most of the time) 2. The dialogue between Anakin and Padme is more believable and is a lot better than most of my romantic dialogue in every relationship lol.
I find it annoying that many bash that romance, but don't see how poorly the one with Leia and Han aged. Han doesn't respect her boundaries, constantly berates her and the constant bickering isn't charming, it's a huge red flag for an unhealthy relationship. Many creeps took inspiration from this kind of flirting and many women I know find this intrusive behaviour uncomfortable.
John Williams is literally the god of music for film - Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws, E.T., Harry Potter, Schindler's List, and so many more spectacular pieces.
I think Anakin’s theme from TPM is really great. It’s so full of childish hope an innocence but it references the Imperial March. Even though he’s still just a kind young child he’s already fated to be a monster.
NOBODY TALKS ABOUT THIS ON TPM, like duel of the fates is incredible but Anakin's theme is a 100% chance of maxing out volume and maybe repeating a couple times its THAT beautiful
@@Gadget-Walkmen basically recently Dave Filoni came out and explained that duel of the fates is the theme for Qui-Gon vs Maul due to the fact that Qui-Gon surviving and serving as the father figure and appropriate mentor for Anakin to steer him on the right path would have prevented his turn to the dark side. It’s a literal duel for the fate of the galaxy and for the chosen one.
The part with Anakin riding the speeder the reason John used duel of the fates is because the fates that are "dueling" in phantom menace is Anakin fate and when Qui-gon Dies Anakins turn to the dark side, his fate is sealed
Honestly, it feels like whenever an actual member of Lucasfilm explains why the prequels are great, prequel haters just go "NANANANANAIMNOTLISTENING", like any sort of praise for them is just automatically wrong.
My college's wind orchestra conductor pointed out that Rey's theme reflects the way she walks. her steps are always light, never heavy, almost athletic or cat-like in that regard. in that sense, her theme is never overly bombastic or heavy. it has light instrumentation, staccato beats, and an overall light and jumpy tone without being explicitly uplifting.
Duel of the Fates is about Anakin’s fate. There’s a clip of Filoni talking about it. So I think Duel of the Fates works really well throughout the prequels. It is only played when Anakin is on screen in AOTC (before he kills sandpeople) and ROTS (final duel). If Qui-Gon wins the fight in TPM, Anakin’s fate is completely different.
True... I like what he pointed out about the Force Awakens soundtrack b'coz like the rest of the movie they had potential and an opportunity to go in a unique direction.
Also the Solo score slaps and Rogue one has an okay score but “Your Father would be proud” is so fucking good. And we all know how amazing the Mandalorian score is.
The Rac19 meh. I like it but y’know those fake Star Wars sounding themes that people use to avoid copyright? Krennics theme always sounds like an imperial march version of that to me
Across the Stars is such a wonderful theme. It perfectly tells the love story between Padme and Anakin, from their unlikely meeting to eventual betrayal and heartbreaking death. I love the swells and the more sinister bits are like the darkness creeping into their otherwise perfect romance. When we get to the ritardando near the end, it becomes musically clear that Padme is going to die of heartbreak. I just love how Williams managed to tell an entire love story over the course of one theme but damn it hits everytime for me.
Anakin: Darth Vader is dead. All hail the return of Anakin Skywalker, the Chosen One! I am reborn, Sidious! Before me, you are nothing! Darth Vader: No. NOOOOOOOOOO! (throws Palpatine down the tube)
It felt so cheap when they reused the *exact* same music in episode 9 when they stopped by the old death star ruins. What once had so much meaning was instead used for "member death star?", like, are we supposed to be sad that the death star is destroyed or something? Complete butchery of star wars music which devalues the original
I was so scared Revenge wouldn't get its credit as #1. That movie takes all the music and blends it together and STILL adds memorable themes. Every time I listen to the music, I catch new motifs embedded in the quiet tracks like Anakin's Nightmare.
It makes me sad. the score is absolutely my favourite in star wars. if you ever get the chance, check out samuel kim's blending of order 66 and Anakin's dark deeds. gave me a sense of dread and sadness that is incomprehensible.
Yes I agree Revenge of the sith been always be number 1 as music theme in the movie and as movie itself. My personal favorite for years have been the theme where Anakin walks with his 501st legion to the jedi temple, when it just sounds so epic and you know where this is going towards, when his about to kill all the jedies and sith empire will rise after I think. This video ranking is preatty good, but I think all sequals movies should be last, because the movie story is copy from orginals and there is no new great music themes, because they did not put that much effort into it, when the story of the movies were also going to be shite. Atleast the prequals and even Phantom Menace offers some new great Star Wars themes we had not heard before in orginals, so thats why I think Phantom Menace themes are even better, than Star Wars sequals themes are.
Fun fact: The music for the duel between Maul and Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon is called Duel of the Fates because that battle was actually the point that defined the future of the galaxy. If Qui-Gon had lived, Anakin would not have fallen to the dark side because Qui-Gon was the best teacher Anakin could have gotten, and would have been able to help Anakin with his feelings. Almost no other moment in the entire prequel trilogy carries the same weight that that duel does, even if it isn't immediately apparent.
I found them a lot less impactful once I learned that quite a lot of his scores in Star Wars and not kinda copy or straight up copy some classical pieces or other pieces in general.
I was in high school when the prequels came out. My best friend did not understand the timeline. They thought that Leia and Padme, and Luke and Anakin were the same characters, but played by different actors. Their reasoning was because they owned the same robots so they must be the same characters.
Duel of the Fates "while Anakin is riding on his speeder on Tatooine just like how we meet Darth Maul" is completely missing the point. He's racing to save his mother, he's trying to save someone he loves despite being told to let go. What leads him to the Dark path in the end? The same exact thing. His mother warns him in TPM "You can't stop the change, anymore than you can stop the suns from setting" and what's happening in the background as he races to save her? The suns setting. Duel of the Fates is about Anakin losing his family, first his father figure Qui-Gon, then his mother Shmi, then his brother Obi-Wan. These losses shift the destiny of the entire galaxy forever. And directly leading up to each loss, a version of Duel of the Fates plays.
Duel of the Fates is about, Fates. Qui Gon Vs Maul was a Fate between Anakin’s fate. If Qui Gon beats Maul, light side wins, if Maul kills Qui Gon, Anakin will slowly drifts to the dark side. Same with his mother. If Anakin saves his mother alive, he stays in the light side. But if his mother dies, he goes deeper in the dark. The first two movies uses duel of the fates as Anakin fates to the dark side hard
@@shawerful5209 yep, what they did not mention is that for Anakin vs Obiwan its not exactly Duel of the Fates, theres a Duel of the Fates motif in the theme (bc the fate of the chosen one and therefore the fate of the force is at stake) but its not it, its appropiately called Battle of the Heroes and its a 5 min masterpiece
I think a theme that is not talked about enough, is the theme when we’re introduced to the clones. It really gives a sense of getting ready for battle, and goes very well with the troopers stomping
The piece that plays during Luke and Vader’s final confrontation, when Luke rages on his father, is my favorite piece in the entire series. It’s so heartwrenching in a way that is wholly unique in the series
He does reference A Path I can’t follow, which I do like a little bit more as it feels like the culmination of a series of events. While Anakin’s betrayal is always associated with the Jedi purge and Order 66, the other version makes me think about everyone else who died to get to this moment.
2003 General Grievous theme was awesome though, it's the musical version of "Grievous is not trapped in a room with you. You are trapped in a room with Grievous." It makes him sound like an unstoppable machine that will wreck your stuff, this music sounds like a horror movie villain theme. The screeching violins remind you of that shower theme from "Pshyco." this small part of the soundtrack wormed its way into my ears and it's not a bad thing, go hear it if you haven't before.
I B personally love A path I cannot follow a ton, it makes me think about everything that’s happened prior that’s lead to this moment. Not just order 66, but Grevious, Dooku, Maul, the Clones, The Old Republic, pretty much everything that got wasted leading to this moment.
For me Phantom Menace is misplaced, the Droid Army Theme is really good and memorable a completely new theme not just repeat of Imperial March but underlining the Invasion Force so well.

@🏳️🌈⃠[Ace Attorney] Lord Fawful I think Rey and Kylo's themes were inverse of each other too IIRC, watched a video a long time ago on how all 3 of their themes relate

If I recall correctly, they actually had Williams compose the music BEFORE the movie was done. "Duel Of The Fates fits Yoda VS Sidious better because it's an actual duel of the fates" ...The original one was too. the _duel_ would decide what Anakin's _fate_ was. If Qui Gon actually killed Maul, Vader would've never happened since he'd still be around to train Anakin properly. And if Maul won, then Anakin wouldn't have Qui Gon as his master and he'd inevitably fall to the dark side. And of course, we know what happened with that.
Also! Duel of the Fates "while Anakin is riding on his speeder on Tatooine just like how we meet Darth Maul" is completely missing the point. Thankfully I think alot of us agree that Qui Gon v Maul was actually also the more important duel for the fate of the galaxy than Yoda v Sidious. I think Sidious talking about how "Vader will become more powerful than either of us" makes it explicit that at that stage the dark side had already won.
The only theme I’m disappointed that they didn’t talk about was “Love Pledge and The Arena”. This theme takes great beats from across the stars, then immediately transitions to an ominous snap back to reality in the Geonotian arena. And when the droids get revealed to attack the Jedi, Oh my gosh. That is a bop. And the way the second half of the song gets used again in anakins March on the Jedi temple is so amazing. I don’t know why more people aren’t talking about this.
A couple points. One: I'm sad they missed the Trade Federation / Droid Army theme in Episode I, and how the Clone Army being revealed with that same music in Episode II was a clever way to tip off the audience that this isn't a good thing; is what the Senate's doing here (not THE Senate, the Galactic Senate) any better than what the Trade Federation did? Second: while there weren't many new themes in Episode III, we can all agree that General Grievous' theme makes for *a fine addition to the collection.*
Droid Invasion Theme is my favourite SW theme. Not many new themes in ROTS what are u on about. Battle of Heroes, Anakin vs Obi Wan, Grievous and the droids, Battle over Coruscant, General Grievous theme, Grievous talks to Palpatine all new original awesome themes. The Prequels are the best trilogy and have the best music
The order 66 scene (titled "Anakin's Betrayal") is amazing specifically for how well Williams pairs certain moments of the suite with small moments in the film as it's carried out.
I’d add in the SFX are also of really high quality. If you saw the movies as a kid practically every scene triggers some kind of Pavlovian response
And the script is memey
I've always thought they were flawed but they were great star wars movies, and that's something disney can't do is make star wars movies. They can just make movies.
Tbh the older i get the less critical i get of them and the more i accept them for what they are. The OT actually looks more basic nowadays tbh. I usually put on 1-3 if i want to watch star wars.

Schafrillas: The force theme
Sideways, an intellectual: Obi-Wan’s theme
Sideways must always be the intellectual.
I think it is the Force theme, not necessarily a “Hero’s Journey Theme”
It still angers me to this day that John Williams was nominated for an Oscar for all the sequel scores but none of the prequels

Same, but Across the Stars is still my favourite Star Wars piece.
Eh, it’s still a lovely piece to play at a wedding or formal dance for partners anyway.
Same
Honestly I can’t be mad at the romance dialogue in the prequels for two reasons
1. I love the prequels and choose to overlook their flaws (most of the time)

I was thinking the same thing
It's the desert mouse theme. Could be Muad'Dib's theme in a Dune adaptation hehehe.

Complete butchery of star wars music which devalues the original
I was so scared Revenge wouldn't get its credit as #1.

It makes me sad. the score is absolutely my favourite in star wars. if you ever get the chance, check out samuel kim's blending of order 66 and Anakin's dark deeds. gave me a sense of dread and sadness that is incomprehensible.
The music is better than the movie

@@Shizilol The third time is about The fate about The republic/empire/galaxy.

I love how Rey's theme is a remix of Palpatine's. Say what you want about the sequels but star wars never has a bad score.
I didnt know that
Imo Rise of Skywalker has a bad score. A lot of the time it isn't bad in a technical sense, but it's so insultingly low effort with how it's implemented, doesn't fit 80% of the time, and even more than any other movie, is so blatantly going "remember this piece from the older movies?? Clap and cheer plz" every 10 minutes or so, without anything new of substance, that I hate it
It's not as flawed in how it's written in a vacuum like some other scores outside of Star Wars, but it's so pathetic in how it's used (likely the fault of the director, JJ Abrams) that it's possibly one of my least favorite soundtracks in any movie
And that sucks to say cause I don't hate the sequels
I dont like the sequels, but Reys theme is great.
@🏳️🌈⃠[Ace Attorney] Lord Fawful I think Rey and Kylo's themes were inverse of each other too IIRC, watched a video a long time ago on how all 3 of their themes relate
You want to know something else? Kylo's theme is the last four notes of Palpatine's. In a sense, Rey's theme opening with Palpatine foreshadows her origin, while Kylo's theme being the ending of Palpatine's theme symbolizes his desire to preserve the last remnants of the Empire

Basically, even John Williams doesn't know what to do with The Rise of Skywalker.
If I recall correctly, they actually had Williams compose the music BEFORE the movie was done. The poor man hadn't even seen the film he was writing the music for, so he pretty much tried to do a tribute to Star Wars music as opposed to writing music that could clash horribly with the scenes they were scored to.
@Jimb0 Exactly. That's actually as close to a compliment as Rise of Skywalker will ever get.
Classical Music Makes sense. They were still shooting in November.
I didn’t find the score that bad.
@@octaviocontrerasvalle811 It's not inherently bad but it's not very original. And we know John Williams is no slacker when it comes to writing film scores. I mean The Force Awakens has an excellent score, even if it fails in many other aspects. the immolation scene...my favourite
@@Major_Ursa The hints of Anakin vs Obi-Wan go back as far as the Empire Strikes Back. In the scene on Dagobah where Luke faces 'Vader' that music can be heard. Not as grand or epic mind you, but the structure is there nonetheless. But seriously Battle of the Heroes alone is better than any of the original music of any of the sequels, hands down.

@@ImTheReverse would've been pretty epic if they used Duel of The Fates during the duel on the Death Star wreckage. Definitely would have made the film more enjoyable, like it'd still be a terrible film, but the music could have made it more watchable.
I need to call attention to how amazing Grevious' theme is as a theme for a villain like him, he's this unfeeling machine but he still has the heart and mind of a great warrior, and the theme does an amazing job of blending the mechanical Droid army theme with this powerful feeling of honor and tribal militarism that just perfectly frames this terrifying cyborg warrior.

"Duel Of The Fates fits Yoda VS Sidious better because it's an actual duel of the fates"
...The original one was too. the _duel_ would decide what Anakin's _fate_ was.
He's racing to save his mother, he's trying to save someone he loves despite being told to let go. What leads him to the Dark path in the end?The same exact thing.

Yes, my favorite part of love pledge and the arena is when the across the stars theme speeds up
A couple points.
The end piece to attack of the clones was also amazing for foreshadowing of the clones with the imperial march intertwined with the republic theme

The order 66 scene (titled "Anakin's Betrayal") is amazing specifically for how well Williams pairs certain moments of the suite with small moments in the film as it's carried out. In the small part where Padme starts crying as she watches the temple burning, there's this soft, haunting melody that sounds like a broken relative to "Across The Stars". It's just one of those times where the music, cinematography, and powerful acting all line up to make a perfect moment.
