A lot of hardcore Star Wars fans probably already know about this fact, but it is interesting to note that Brian De Palma and Jay Cocks were heavily involved in rewriting the opening crawl for A New Hope. The original title crawl created by George Lucas was supposedly too bloated and confusing, so De Palma and Cocks changed it to be more concise and understandable.
One tiny thing I wish was different in Revenge of The Sith’s crawl is have “Chancellor Palpatine” in all caps as a way of foreshadowing him becoming The Emperor and turning Anakin to the dark side. Thanks to you, I’ll never be able to view these crawls the same way again
I never realised how funny the sentence “hoping to resolve the matter with a blockade of deadly battle ships” is It’s like, “hoping to negotiate with a horde of killer chainsaw robots”
Now that he's done the crawls, I'd love to see James' take on the opening scenes of each film. It might seem a bit gratuitous after the crawls, but in my opinion, a few of these are some of the most iconic scenes in film.

@@lonebattledroid4474 The pacing would still be a bit odd as there would have to be some sort of a time jump between the kidnap and them succesfully recovering him. If its resolved too quick, the fact that he's kidnapped at all wouldn't hold much weight.

It introduces him as a character and the things he's capable of, making him less of a baffling addition to the story. You could also make the audience jump which would be fun imo lol
Honestly, it's fine. At this point we just think of the chancellor as a weakling, so it's expected that some general of the opposition got to kidnap him. We don't really need to know how it happened. Then, it is revealed that he's actually really powerful, but also in kahoots with Dooku, so, again, it makes even more sense that he got captured.
My favorite part was when the Phantom of the Menace crawl said “It’s JarJarin’ Time” right at the end, and then immediately cuts to imperial droids getting Jar’d on.
One flaw with the ROTS one you didn't mention is it probably has the most inaccurate statement in any of the crawls. "The Republic is crumbling!" In context it isn't referring to moral degradation or corruption, it is explicitly referring to losing the war in military terms, that the republic is faltering against Dooku's forces... that the war is causing a struggle, either militarily, logistically or economically. but we don't see much, if any of that at all in the movie... Coruscant is... seemingly entirely unaffected, we don't even see any of the lingering damage from the recent attack! it's probably the most pristine recent battleground in film/TV history.. and senators are on open-topped platforms attending operas a couple of days later... comparing to the source of inspiration, old newsreels, The USA looked more affected by WW2 in a visceral sense, nightlife diminished, bond drives, signs that the war was HAPPENING and had both direct and indirect effects on the homefront, but Coruscant had enemy boots on the ground, a battle of incomprehensible scale happening right in it and above it. The entire setting of Coruscant should have felt like London during the Blitz in this movie, but it doesn't and it feels like the crawl is just lying to you.

I thought “War!” was a cool opening to RotS’s crawl. It was the first time I saw an exclamation mark in one of them, indicating that it was something to be taken seriously.
I don't think anyone would ever say ANH's crawl is anything less than perfect. It has an unfair disadvantage being the intro, however they give you enough to know what's happening and filling you in on what's going on without having to see anything else.
This man's dedication to ranking everything Star Wars related except for the Star Wars movies themselves truly makes him a force to be reckoned with Edit: oh yeah, Letterboxd exists my bad
I personally think that the opening crawls for The Mandalorian, Obi Wan, and Boba Fett were the best ones. They were short and concise and didn't give too much exposition of too much value (Unlike "Somehow Palpatine returned"). Good stuff Disney
Until recently, when playing the LEGO Star Wars complete saga, I finally understood that "the phantom menace" refers to Palpatine/Sith and how he is the menace behind the curtains, like how you can't see a ghost/phantom. Before that I actually had no idea what it meant and never 'cared' enough to look it up, even though I perfectly knew the meaning of the words, just couldn't relate it to anything.
Another point about the use of capitalization is that the earlier movies only capitalized the important named stuff, like you would when first encountering a character in a screenplay, so it works, Rise of Skywalker just threw that screenplay-esque capslock out the window by capitalizing "revenge".
I like the aspect of it that you have to wait for the text to scroll so you can really take it in, kinda like how we have to wait for the bojack season 6 review
The one thing about Return of the Jedi's crawl I didn't hear mentioned is how it pumps the twist. "When completed, this ultimate weapon will spell certain doom...." but ACTUALLY (note the appropriate caps) the Death Star does not need to be completed to spell certain doom for them, making that twist so much more shocking. Anyway, very fun video, thanks!
@@christonadams9046 I dunno. It doesn't really work well as a standalone, considering it has no real proper beginning nor end. Hence why I always defer to A New Hope.

I think my favorite crawl is Rouge One because it didn’t have one. It immediately sets a different tone and tells you that this movie isn’t going the same direction
IMO, the reason the first crawl reads so much better and so differently from the others (forgetting for a moment that it's the first) is that it was originally *six paragraphs* but Lucas let Brian de Palma and Jay Cocks rewrite it. Those guys sadly never wrote anything else for Star Wars again but damn if they didn't NAIL the franchise's very first impression on its audience.

Yes, a wholly original ranking of one of the things that makes Star Wars so iconic! I too think A New Hope's opening crawl is the best one for many reasons, several of which you just mentioned. Sets up some of the lore, excites the viewer, & is worded perfectly. And it's all gift wrapped by a fantastic opening sequence. So glad I'm subscribed to this guy!
Ok I really loved this video, not mentioning my love for Star Wars, I loved the descriptions, the comparisons, the references and the editing in this one. It was overall very entertaining and funny
Interesting idea for a video, love it! I mostly agree with your take, my only major critique is that the Force Awakens’ crawl doesn’t really establish what the New Republic is. Considering the movie doesn’t either, it makes sense why this is, but that should have definitely been a priority when building on the established world. Same with the First Order, which is necessary since they are the main antagonists of the trilogy. Otherwise, I never noticed that connection between Return of the Jedi and a New Hope, such strong storytelling!

There are heroes on both sides is nowhere near as bad as both sides have their heroes, that one is the one that actually sounds bad and like it’s all black and white
The movies never demonstrate that there are heroes on both sides though.
I love when the separatist leader says that they were promist peace, right before Anakin, now Vader, kills him. It shows that they were never pure evil, but that they had differing opinions and were willing to use more extreme and violent measures than the Republic

In regards to Empire, I think it would have been good to say Leia was the one leading the rebel group as she had much much more control, even being in the command center when evacuating Hoth.
Yeah I thought that too but I guess the crawl is meant to highlight Luke as the main character
@@twicejaeger6997 While I can see that, it still feels weird because I feel Leia and Han were more focused on in Empire than the other original movies, and therefore feels at least one of them should be mentioned in the crawl
With regards to the Empire opening crawl, I think the implication is that Luke was leading the crew that actually found Hoth as a rebel base. You know just like how Hera was in charge of the ghost crew when they found Chopper base. At least that's my read of the situation
how about "A group of freedom fighters with their hero Luke Skywalker."
Only using Backstroke of the West clips for the ROTS reference is subtle gold
Sure its kinda weird to have palpatines kidnapping in the crawl, but imagine if the opening to episode 3 wasnt that epic shot of the battle
You could still do the epic shot but instead, we could follow the battle towards the ground and see Grevious land to kidnap Palps
@@lonebattledroid4474 The pacing would still be a bit odd as there would have to be some sort of a time jump between the kidnap and them succesfully recovering him. If its resolved too quick, the fact that he's kidnapped at all wouldn't hold much weight.
I think the shot could've been there, just not the opener. I think opening on Grievous absolutely wrecking some clone troopers would've been very impactful. It introduces him as a character and the things he's capable of, making him less of a baffling addition to the story. You could also make the audience jump which would be fun imo lol
And with the opening on Grievous slaying the clones would've be a thematic rhyme with new hope's opening

Seeing Schaffrillas overanalyze the opening crawls gives me life
One flaw with the ROTS one you didn't mention is it probably has the most inaccurate statement in any of the crawls.

Another point about the use of capitalization is that the earlier movies only capitalized the important named stuff, like you would when first encountering a character in a screenplay, so it works,
Rise of Skywalker just threw that screenplay-esque capslock out the window by capitalizing "revenge".
I like the aspect of it that you have to wait for the text to scroll so you can really take it in, kinda like how we have to wait for the bojack season 6 review

IMO, the reason the first crawl reads so much better and so differently from the others (forgetting for a moment that it's the first) is that it was originally *six paragraphs* but Lucas let Brian de Palma and Jay Cocks rewrite it.
