Aw what a lovely surprise to come across this video this morning. It being St Andrew's day I was on a "proud to be scottish" youtube trawl, and searched jimmy shand randomly as this was music I was brought up around as a child at my grandparents and being taken to dances like these. It was shock but absolutely amazing to see my gran and grandy dancing in this, I didnt even know it existed. My grandy died suddenly in 1996 when I was I was only 17, seeing him in being the big friendly sociable gentleman i remember him being was just magic, I've not stopped smiling all morning I'm so happy to have found this and defo need to buy the DVD as we lost my gran in 2010, these memories become even more cherished once the people we love pass on. So many familiar faces not just family on these vids, I still cant believe I am only finding them now and cant wait to browse through and watch some more 😍😍
Well I have Scottish ancestry in me and I love all that it entails, music, bagpipes and dance. Can listen and look for hours. Jimmy Shand and his music is great. Have a couple of old C.D. s of his and would never part with them.😢
That hall has to be a standard design… I’m saying that because in Burrawang, New South Wales, Australia, we have the exact same hall design you’d swear it was ours lol. I’m no Scot but loved Jimmy Shands music since I was a wee toddler! 😊

@@brucecollins4729 I received this reply in email and had to come to RUclips to find out what it was about. My response was only to point out that we Scots have a variety of dance temps from Scottish Waltz to Strathsapey, Jig, reel, Hornpipe and the various Highland tempos. The Virginia reel is to an extent based on American tunes and style but is in reel timeb(4/4). I have been involved in Scottish dance since childhood, having grown up only 4 miles from Jimmy Shand (Senior), and taught it for years and particularly in the West/Hebrides we are very aware of the links with Irish and Cape Breton music.

Great stuff!😅
I've never seen the Virginia reel done in this fashion. Must be contemporary.
multiply the speed by 4 or 5 and you get an Irish set dance !
christian schwender okay, this made me laugh.
There are a variety of speeds at which Scottish country dances are played - as you might guess from the name, this is an American-style one.
When was this recorded?
love listening to the legend himself.my granda played the accordion with him a few times.im learning these tunes too.
😍😍😍😍
Who is Jimmy Shand Jr's 'second-box' man?
the second box accordionist is Hamish Smith who normally plays with the Sandy Nixon dance band.
jimmy shand a true legend (and I'm english)

Are you looking at Jimmy or his son? Jimmy Senior's Red botton key accordion was specially built by Hohner, the Shand Morino.
You are supposed to smile and be happy ,c'mon Scotland...let go !
accelerate the speed and you get Irish set dancing
