- A video to show/teach the steps involved in dancing the famous Scottish Ceilidh Dance The Gay Gordons featuring the Alastair Scott Ceilidh Band - a project for the Ulster-Scots Community Network funded by ACNI.
Every time I have to brush up for a wedding I realise it isn‘t as complicated as I remember, and then forget all over again for the next one

My favourite dance with my late wife..... beautiful.
We used to do this at the church youth club - more than half a century ago. .. ❤
THANK YOU!! Our family does a different country every year for Christmas; this year it is Scotland This is so great for us to learn a dance.
It was great fun doing these at school.
Thank you very much to all. This is so helpful. 🙏❤
God, this is my favourite dance in school! One of the best
Thank you Mum and daughter .. brill !
Thank you! This was super helpful for learning how to teach this dance at a retreat
Brilliant! Very clear for our next ceilidh here near Seville in Spain!
Well done. Nicely played and danced.
Hello Ruth you make it look so easy. Next week if you could go through it a few times at our next dance class? Adrian.
Hi I don't know if my post will be noticed I'm an 88-year-old Gentleman & who has danced this dance since I was a teenager I'm surprised no one has noticed that this young lady is being taught to lead off with the wrong foot the gentleman leads with the left foot not the right check out more videos' this is not meant to be over critical as I have taught dancing of all kinds & it is important to be taught correctly best wishes good dancing.
Thank you!
In French, we call the twirl underneath the arm "pastourelle". Good teaching, thank you.
Thankyou for teaching us
Oh my goodness ! Thank you for posting this video !! I have always wanted to do the Gay Gordon's and now I can !!!! ❤️
Love from the U.S. !!
That was great Thanks for posting
Who else has a school ceilidh soon and is trying to:
A - See if they remember how the fuck to do this
And
B - Figure out how the fuck they’re meant to do this in heels??
Loved this. Very easy to undertstand and learn
She says ‘tallest’ and ‘smallest’ but I’m taller than my boyfriend and I definitely wouldn’t switch our dancing roles because of it.
Yeah but at a ceilidh in Scotland at least you dance with not just your partner, but some of your friends if your partner is getting a drink say. So it really is tallest or smallest when you’re dancing with your best friend! :)
Honestly that’s not how we’ve ever done it. I’m taller than a few male friends I’ve danced with and we’ve always based it on sex. I often take the male role dancing with female friends but not otherwise. Maybe if there was a significant height difference, but I’m just a couple of inches taller than the average man so it’s never felt necessary.
What fun!
Great job!
Thank You so much ,lovely .
I remember dancing thr Gay Gordons at a church "Do" in England in the Fifties.
Great job I watched this video at school
Thank you so much!!
Wish we could have been told Mummy's NAME. She is an excellent tutor, and the Band too have done her justice.
It’s the very first thing she says, after “hello”. It’s Ruth.
Music very good ,
Love it .with a wedding ensuing this was invaluable.Just need to keep hubby's size 12s off the toes.
Steel toed dance/evening shoes should be a thing!
Thank you
Thanks!
“ quality” all the best from Scotland 🥃
She and her daughter are very.good
She looks so much like you 😊 I'm not sure why i thought the Gay Gordon was an English Folk dance. Thanks for correcting my misconception via your video.
Very Nice ladies
Tallest person, smallest person - no! Man woman boy girl. At school I danced with chest high boys but we learned the relevant steps for our adult size.
Can’t step on it I used too go to the Social club I love to be able to do it it’s not easy
Please can you tell me the tune names. I know the first is “Scotland the Brave”
Best wishes
Miss linda mcfarlane i think thats the second tune
Very nice! Wish you wold have taught your daughter to do the polka though. Everything is perfect up til the polka-part, and that's the tricky bit you realy need instructions for these days. (I teach children and adults historic- and folk dancing in Sweden)
What is the name of the song to dance this to?
Scotland the Brave.
Reeee
That girl is exceptionally poor at keeping in time! We did these dances as younger children almost immediately once shown.
What do you gain from being rude about a child who’s just doing a nice thing with her mum? I hope you’re not mean to your own family like this. I would be upset if my ma said something like that to me.
QUÉ VIDEO MÁS ÑOÑO Y ABURRIDO!!!
