At school in the 60s/70s we were shown each of these dances once then were easily able to join in with the help of a “caller” and enjoy, with just the occasional misstep and wrong turn and clash, which all added to the fun.
Thanks!
Thank you Mum and daughter .. brill !
Толстенький дядечка так хорошо и легко танцует, просто загляденье!😊
Can’t step on it I used too go to the Social club I love to be able to do it it’s not easy
Beautiful
Music very good ,
She looks so much like you 😊 I'm not sure why i thought the Gay Gordon was an English Folk dance. Thanks for correcting my misconception via your video.
Thank you very much to all. This is so helpful. 🙏❤
Very nice! Wish you wold have taught your daughter to do the polka though. Everything is perfect up til the polka-part, and that's the tricky bit you realy need instructions for these days. (I teach children and adults historic- and folk dancing in Sweden)
Hello Ruth you make it look so easy. Next week if you could go through it a few times at our next dance class? Adrian.
So much of this history makes me crazy. The Ulster reivers/ borderers suffered the same treatment as the Irish. They were exactly alike save for language and religion and that last only for the past generation or so. They should have linked up, made common cause and avoided 300 yrs of strife between them. There was enough land for all and together they could've delivered the government in London years of payment in kind. They were both clannish, temperamental and martial ppl. Even their music and whiskey culture was alike. London starts a bar brawl between Jock And Fergal stands back and laughs.
You don't understand the Reivers - many of the riding families were both Scottish and English with branches on both sides of the borders. Nearly all the families also had allies (ever shifting) over the border. In the later 17th century for example, the allies of the Scottish Armstrong, Elliots, Nixons and Croziers were the notorious English Reiver families the Dodds, Robsons Charltons and their Cumbrian kith the Carltons and sometimes the Milburns etc. The Grahams straddled the border, firstly they were a Scottish family and latterly most of them lived on the English side. The Bells lived in both England and Scotland as did the Halls. The Armstrongs were found in Liddlesdale, South Cumberland and also north and south Northumberland. These families didn't give two hoots about either England or Scotland... they were loyal to their families and allies (until they fell out ha ha ha). They cemented alliances - oft after feuding - via marriage (sometimes mass weddings!). For example, infamous reiver Kinmont Willie Armstrong was married to the daughter of the heidsman of the Cumbrian Carltons. These are just a few examples of what I'm talking about...

What fun!
That girl is exceptionally poor at keeping in time! We did these dances as younger children almost immediately once shown.
What do you gain from being rude about a child who’s just doing a nice thing with her mum? I hope you’re not mean to your own family like this. I would be upset if my ma said something like that to me.
@@thacic8480I wanted people to know that it is very, very much easier and much much more fun than this girl is making it look. We are not all equally good at everything, a thought that I’m sure she’s able to bear by that age. Somebody has to be worst and most of us have had the experience of being that person at something other, some game, some dance, some sport, some subject, some art. What do you do? Laugh at yourself! Realize that and try harder.
Tallest person, smallest person - no! Man woman boy girl. At school I danced with chest high boys but we learned the relevant steps for our adult size.
It was great fun doing these at school.
She and her daughter are very.good
Superb! 🤩 - 👏👏👏
I remember dancing thr Gay Gordons at a church "Do" in England in the Fifties.
“ quality” all the best from Scotland 🥃
IMO this is the best version of bury me beneath the willow on YT!
Come to Tennessee please Bristol of course! Ya'll would fit right in!
Beautiful song. Keep it rolling guys.
Very Nice ladies
Thankyou for teaching us
My favourite dance with my late wife..... beautiful.
In French, we call the twirl underneath the arm "pastourelle". Good teaching, thank you.
Beautiful!
Thank you for the lovely music
Superb 👏👏👏
the boarder reivers were scottish and english transplanted to ireland due to their constant cattle rustling and thieving cross boarders between england and scotland.
QUÉ VIDEO MÁS ÑOÑO Y ABURRIDO!!!
Great info...
Brilliant! Very clear for our next ceilidh here near Seville in Spain!
Hi I don't know if my post will be noticed I'm an 88-year-old Gentleman & who has danced this dance since I was a teenager I'm surprised no one has noticed that this young lady is being taught to lead off with the wrong foot the gentleman leads with the left foot not the right check out more videos' this is not meant to be over critical as I have taught dancing of all kinds & it is important to be taught correctly best wishes good dancing.
Thank you!
Wish we could have been told Mummy's NAME. She is an excellent tutor, and the Band too have done her justice.
It’s the very first thing she says, after “hello”. It’s Ruth.
THANK YOU!! Our family does a different country every year for Christmas; this year it is Scotland This is so great for us to learn a dance.
Please can you tell me the tune names. I know the first is “Scotland the Brave” Best wishes
Miss linda mcfarlane i think thats the second tune
Thank You so much ,lovely .
Thank you so much!!
Thank you! This was super helpful for learning how to teach this dance at a retreat
Well done. Nicely played and danced.
We used to do this at the church youth club - more than half a century ago. .. ❤
Every time I have to brush up for a wedding I realise it isn‘t as complicated as I remember, and then forget all over again for the next one

She says ‘tallest’ and ‘smallest’ but I’m taller than my boyfriend and I definitely wouldn’t switch our dancing roles because of it.
Yeah but at a ceilidh in Scotland at least you dance with not just your partner, but some of your friends if your partner is getting a drink say. So it really is tallest or smallest when you’re dancing with your best friend! :)
Honestly that’s not how we’ve ever done it. I’m taller than a few male friends I’ve danced with and we’ve always based it on sex. I often take the male role dancing with female friends but not otherwise. Maybe if there was a significant height difference, but I’m just a couple of inches taller than the average man so it’s never felt necessary.
Love it .with a wedding ensuing this was invaluable.Just need to keep hubby's size 12s off the toes.
Steel toed dance/evening shoes should be a thing!
British names?? what do you mean? scottish, yes, and english names, they aren't welsh. Britians a fiction.
Oh my goodness ! Thank you for posting this video !! I have always wanted to do the Gay Gordon's and now I can !!!! ❤️ Love from the U.S. !!
That was great Thanks for posting
