    It’s a really fascinating blurring of the lines they achieved with this game, imo. To me it’s clearly running in the base game given the animations and cutscenes. But also the visuals and architecture as about as “remade” as one can get. Ultimately I’ve come around to believing “remaster” is most accurate but you can’t deny the effort. Also a great point about the industry being so inconsistent with its nomenclature. Great video again, broski!

    While I am loving my time with metroid prime remastered I have a couple of issues with it that they easily could've solved.
    -faster scan visor
    -map markers
    I think that's it, I would say autosave but metroid games don't have autosave.

    Note about FFVII:R, "Remake" isn't a noun here, but a verb-form subtitle denoting a theme of "remaking". It's not "The Final Fantasy VII [Re]make", it's "Final Fantasy VII: Re[make]" - and IIRC it's actually a time-looped sequel rather than just a reimagining. Could probably compare it to the new Higurashi anime.

    Port: copy and paste of a game code with slight tweaks for a system it’s going to. Example: final fantasy 7 on PlayStation and on PC.
    Remaster: like a port, but with alterations to some visuals/textures. Example: the last of us on PS3 and later PS4 or in this case Metroid Prime for GC vs Metroid Prime Remastered for Switch.
    Remake: completely new code on a new game engine, but follows the same story for the most part. Example: Metroid on NES vs Metroid zero mission on GBA or demon souls for PS3 vs on PS5.

  • @Mari_Izu
    @Mari_Izu Год назад +2

    For me it's a remake, as they remade the entire visual assets, remaster is a term coined by the music industry that refers to reusing the source to make a higher quality master (thus, remaster). Same with the movie industry. So a remaster in games should be things like Skyward Sword HD and Wind Waker HD while Ocarina of Time 3D and Metroid Prime Remastered which has completely new assets, are remakes.
    I hate how much the game industry calls basically everything a "remaster" nowadays, changing completely the meaning. And sucks that even the developers are defending this bullshit with their "but the original code is running under it", well, okay, but you remade the entire visual identity of the game.
    Edit: FFVII Remake is neither imo, but that's spoilers.

    • @trashaimgamer7822

    • @5h0ckblock
      @5h0ckblock Год назад

      Well you kinda went against your own point here. As you said, a remaster uses the source. Yes, Metroids visuals are different, however the animation, code, music, sounds, level design, and gameplay are all from the original. A car that has a new frame, with a new coat of paint, isn't a new car. Under the hood is the same engine, gas tank, wires, tail pipes, etcetera. Visuals alone do not make something a brand-new thing. It just looks new.

    But I also think it's as simple as the fact that they didn't redo all (or any?) of the animations, so it can't be a remake if such a large part of a game's graphics are still all the same.
    Not to slight the game, it's amazing, a huge effort, and I'm delighted! But a remake would need all animations to be redone as well, which they aren't.

    The games industry is inconsistent with the term because it's become a purely marketing term, that rose in prominence with the popularity of remastering popularity in the film industry in the early 2000's.
    Actual remasters are incredibly rare in the games industry because of how depressingly disposable original assets and code used to make a master is, especially during the time period of Metroid prime.
    This leads us into a very important litmus,
    If someone is trying to explain what a remaster is, and they don't start by explaining what a master is, they are wrong.
    If you do not have the pre mastered assets, you can not make a remaster of them.
    This is why claims that mpr is a remaster, or uses the prime code base is misinformation. The prime code base 99.99% odds no longer exists, all that's left is the result of that codebase after it was compiled, and already mastered assets that can be ripped from the ROM.
    If you want to make a neat story, or continue marketing narratives, sure, fine. If you want to claim to be accurate and factual, you need to stick to facts and hard information.
    Even if the source code from prime was still available it would be impossible to use it today, as several of it's base lynchpin hardware instruction requirements the code was written around, not only never existed outside of Nintendo's custom ibm hardware, but no longer exist in modern hardware anywhere, the instructions can not be natively executed. This is not a place conducive to discuss this so to make a long story short I'll just leave a single term of probably the most glaring instruction problem: IBM's Nintendo proprietary ppc750 paired singles.
    What instead was done is the same thing that's done with pretty much every faux marketed 'remaster', decompile and reverse engineer.
    People were already doing this for several prime games, Metroid prime hunters, and prime itself. Although I'm not sure of the status of prime Decompiled, it's been a while since I checked in on it, but I'd imagine mpr stole a considerable amount of thunder. The homebrew Metroid prime Decompiled as it was, is more code accurate than mpr. That's not a slight against mpr. What retro did... Not even talking about the incredible art overhaul. It's beyond the means of such a homebrew project, and the brute forced just in time solutions employed to overcome certain issues for mpdecompiled simply would not work in the switch environment at anything close to retros incredibly strict on lock 60fps.
    I'd Listen to what mpr itself says in the credits. MPR is *based* off of the game Metroid prime on the GameCube and and Metroid prime from the mptrilogy on Wii.

    I see it in the most literal sense of the word
    Remastered means what?
    Probably “improved” and anything that’s better could be considered remastered even if it’s a small or big improvement
    Remake means the game is remade and anything that’s reworked is remade so really it can mean anything and there’s no reason to hold these words to any specific case scenario since they can mean a variety of things.
    FF7 remake makes sense because the story could be one of the things that’s”remade”

    Remaster: Copy, Paste, Edit visuals and some controls and mechanics to current standards.
    Remake: Start from scratch and make the same thing.
    What the hell ever FF7 did: Oh, ok.
    At least that's how I see it. There's a possibility for the same quirks, glitches and nonsense to pull through. A remake wouldn't, unless it was a fan favorite and intentionally included. This difference doesn't really matter unless you're a speedrunner or something though. Or it's FF7.

    *Haven't heard of using "reimagined" before, but I like it. It's interesting that we're at a point where classics are being remade with modern tech and features.
    *Metroid Prime R could have been elevated to a "remake" level /if/ they had added additional features, like a more detailed map that shows things like water and spider-ball rails, or made fast travel between elevators possible, or had a way to find chozo artifacts via xray visor etc.
    *Random thought: If FF7 on the PlayStation was the LOTR by J.R.R. Tolkien, then FF7R is the Peter Jackson films.

    when i think of the term "remaster", i think of the practice of "mastering" in film and audio. in these cases mastering is one of the final steps where you take all the elements you have and put them all together to form one coherent piece. Thus the term "remaster " seems to imply that one would do this step again, maybe with better technology, knowledge, a different vision or a mix of all of these and more. But this definition of "remaster" means that no new pieces of get made, just that the original get ~re-mastered~

  • @BlondeBarbarian
    @BlondeBarbarian Год назад

    I'm glad this conversation is happening because I feel people keep using these terms interchangeably when they clearly don't apply. I also like your distinction between a remake and a reimagining. Lots of games get the remake treatment but the devs go so far adding new features and mechanics that its not really the same game anymore. Its using the original as a foundation, but it ultimately created something new.
    ZM and SR have always fallen into that latter category for me. As someone who grew up with the originals, the "remakes" really don't offer the same experience. Which is a shame because I feel those games have a lot of unique qualities and could really use a true remake, but now that we have these newer games it will probably never happen.
    So that's why I think we should come up with a definitive scale as to what constitutes a remake/remaster/reimagining. Games with the same underlying source code but updated visuals and maybe a few QOL improvements are remasters: MPR, TPHD, WWHD ect would fall into this category.
    Games that are essentially the same as an older game, but were rebuilt from the ground up to run on newer hardware are remakes. At least 75% of the overall experience must be the same as the original in order to be considered a remake. The Sonic mobile "ports" by Christian Whitehead are actually remakes and not ports at all. They were quite literally remade from the ground up but offer the same experience. The only thing that was ported over is the visual presentation.
    And lastly, reimaginings are brand new games that are only loosely based on an already existing game. Games that comprise 50% or more new content that did not exist in the original belong here. ZM, SR, the recent RE remakes etc are examples of this.
    There will definitely be lots of grey area titles out there that do not fit neatly into one of these categories, but it will still be good to more clearly define these terms so people know what they're getting. Yes, MPR is a remaster. Its probably the greatest most comprehensive and high effort remaster out there, but it is a remaster all the same. And there's nothing wrong with that.

      Its just a high effort remaster. Most remasters do the bare minimum and just up res everything

  • @5h0ckblock
    @5h0ckblock Год назад

    Its really not so complicated, If you are using the original game as a base, and update it, so long as the skeleton of the original still exist within the games files, then you have a remaster. No ifs ands or buts. Can't be debated, that is by definition a remaster. However, sadly this means a simple up res is a remaster. We've seen so many of this quick and easy up res type of remaster that when real effort is used people get confused and think they see a remake instead.
    A remake is just that, a remake. There are no assets from the original, everything even the code is built from the ground up. Even if you purposefully design the game to play 99% like the original with similar visuals, its still a remake simply due to the fact you never used the original code. So what does that make a reimagining then? Well its under the category of a remake. Remakes have 2 categories, faithful, and reimagining, Something like, Zelda Link's awakening is a pretty faithful remake, designed to be roughly the same game but with a couple extras thrown in. While Resident Evil 3 is a reimagining. It may have a similar story, and the same genre, but the core of the game is the creators new vision for it.
    Examples of Remasters - Final Fantasy Crisis Core Reunion, Wind Waker HD, The Last of Us Remastered.
    Examples of Remakes - The Last of Us Remake, Metroid 2 Samus Returns, Resident Evil 1, Resident Evil 2, Pokemon Brilliant Daimond.
