I personally loved everything this game tried. Also, this is the only game where I can CONFIDENTLY say that the motion controls were a delight to use, added to the experience, and were well executed

Same. Strangely, to me, Metroid Prime 2 is the weakest one. feels way more linear than 3, hate the ball bosses (spider ball boss and dash ball boss omg) and i felt that the different locals were either desert, dark desert, ruins, dark ruins, tech place, dark teck place. The luminoth guy is cool though xD

My only complaint was the lack of tracking in charged shots making them worthless except at point blank range due to lower flight speed. Really hurt the strategy as bean spam was the only choice expect for melee charge shot. Someone needs to give Sammy a beam sabre for melee action.

I liked corruption because it felt more like a lived in universe. The Federation feels like it's an actual force and I'm super surprised you didn't mention that awesome scene when you lower the planetary shields and the federation fighters swoop down and start raising hell. Then soldiers are assigned to guard the landing pads. I thought that was so cool. Other bounty hunters with their own styles exist, multiple planets; if only they had continued from there and not waited so long.

This. You felt like you were an important part of a real, living universe. The galaxy is supposed to be at stake in all the other metroid games as well, but the isolation actually works against one feeling like this is the case. Here, getting to meet the people youre fighting for really helps that part of the story hit home

Man, bro, just hearing that choir for the intro literally is marked on my soul. MP3 was my 1st Metroid game, so it means a lot to have it being reviewed and still loved and enjoyed more than 15 years after it released, so thank you so very much for bringing attention to the prime games that they rightfully earned and deserved.

Prime 3 Motion Controls were one of, if not the best implementation of motion controls there ever were on the Wii. It might have been finnicky at times with the pumping and stuff but the rest worked very well imho. All in all I liked Corruption a lot, it was a very satisfying conclusion to the trilogy at the time.

Prime 3 did bring a welcomed (to me) more narrative aspect, all the while preserving exploration and feelings of being left on your own most of the time. I love Prime 2 and 3, but I also love narration, and 1 and 2 have none (although I love learning the lore through reading the files). Prime 3 varies between loneliness/exploration, and more epic narrative sequences.

It always sucks hearing how Prime 3 didn't strike the same chord with a lot of people as it did for me. Prime 3 is my absolute favorite Metroid game in the entire series.
I love hypermode, I love the unique aesthetics, I love actually using Samus's ship, I love Dark Samus being taken as the legitimate threat she is, I love the voice acting and the Federation and the other bounty hunters, the controls feel anything but intrusive to me, the story feels more impactful, you get the screw attack much earlier, you don't lose your entry suit upgrades. It's just a blast from beginning to end for me.

as someone who plays Prime 3 a lot, the super zoomed out view in the footage is so trippy. I'm used to many of the shots being closer up, especially because they give some nice detail, like how Gandrayda in the intro to 242 leans forward in interest when it starts speaking for the first time, or when Samus gets corrupted and the close up of her visor as she falls back looks very Dark Samus esque.

I figured out why I never had the key "motion controls" fail me but always come by people saying it doesn't work reliably:
Pushing and pulling on the wii remote are not a "motion sensor" input bur rather an IR camera action, so you literally only have to move your wii remote CLOSER or FURTHER from the TV, not yank it or stab at it, the wii remote can tell how much you varied the distance from a to b by the distance between the dots of the sensor bar, the wii's gyro/accelerometer don't have to "feel" anything. That's it, thank you for reading.
(PS: I mean I "figured out" that people seem to confuse the type of action, not that I didn't know the difference, some people never played Warioware and it shows)

Corruption is my least favorite of the trilogy but I always appreciated how it is the climax of the trilogy, in the first two you where investigating two different events with the common denominator of phazon and you learn how dangerous it is, by corrpution you're at war with the space pirates and dark samus

That's the same criticism people had with Mass Effect 3. They wanted to continue making choices that'll effect the outcome of the series, but it's the 3rd Act! Now its time to wrap up the story! Corruption was now needing to be more directed and guided than the previous 2. Now that whole guided narrative didn't work well with Fusion in my opinion, but I'm glad they ditched it for Dread and let you explore while wrapping up Samus' story.

Thank you for hitting on the ship upgrade issue. I like their narrative implementation, but its clear their utility was not fully realized, and that made clear to me by the fact there are several "mission expansion" upgrades in the game. My theory was there was supposed to be sections/areas where you could call airstrikes beyond blowing up generators/walls. Probably some larger areas in each map where there would have been a large number of enemies, or even boss fights would require extra ship ammo. It sucks looking for the ship missile expansions cause you think you're finding something really useful until you've beaten the game several times and realize there is no use of a limited ship ammo anywhere.
Anyways, Corruption was my first game on the wii, and not only my first time playing a metroid game, but also a prime game. I was hooked in almost as fast as when I first played the halo series. I agree with all the criticisms you levied against it, though it holds a special place in my heart. Love the whole trilogy, but when I pull out my wii every couple of years to play the trilogy again I am always most excited to finish 1&2 just so I can play 3. The story, the designs of the federation and space pirates, it feels like a real sci-fi.

Corruption was dope imo, the wii controls may have been annoying for some, but all of those wiimote puzzles go by so quick when you have an actual wiimote,
I barely noticed them at all. I thought the story was incredible, the locations were all unique looking, and as you went along you began to feel terrible for the
bounty hunters you were taking out because you ultimately had no choice. The late game was awesome, fighting dark samus while excessively saturated with phazon
was epic. It was my first prime I really played, so luckily, I didn't really "experience" any of its problems

I played all the way until the golem and I couldn't get any further. This game has a piece of my heart since it started my love of Metroid and got me to branch out to some of the Metroid games on virtual console. Heck, I beat Dread a couple days after it came out lmao. After playing Prime 1 and 2, I can definitely see the weak points in 3, and I'm glad to see someone out there point out not only the flaws but also the things it's got right. This will forever live one of my favorite games considering this was my first Metroid aside from the gba port of the nes version. I played it to death on the wii. The variety in the environment. The fact you can see inside the iconic ship. All the upgrades and the fact the suit changes as you progress. As a kid I was utterly shocked how far it pushed the graphics on the wii. It was just so interactive and I can’t stress enough about how great the atmosphere is. If this is not ported to switch I’ll be devastated.

As someone who plays/played the games on their original consoles, you can tell that Corruption suffers from Wii syndrome. Basically they sacrificed certain game aspects to focus on their fancy motion controls. That been said the controls do make the game fun to play once you're used to them, but it does make the game gimmicky at times. You basically hit all the issues I had. Constant backtracking, being too easy, everything being easy to find. Another thing that may not have been an issue on PC but was definitely annoying on the Wii was the abhorred load times. The gunship was used as a loading screen like elevators, and it would take FOREVER to get to the next landing pad. I'm not saying it's a bad game, but in my opinion it is the weakest of the Prime series.

    • @Kohana64
      @Kohana64  Год назад +10

Oh yeah, the load times are pretty ridiculous. Even on PC. Hopefully if they ever do a rerelease, the upgraded hardware will help fix that. As for the controls thing, I totally agree. Overall, they're a net benefit, but they still have issues.

One of my biggest nitpicks with the finale of MP3 is that I feel its final bosses should have been fought in reverse.
You start by fighting the Corrupted Aurora Unit, then after you beat it, Dark Samus emerges and you fight her for the fate of Phaaze/the galaxy, in the cage match it deserves like those in MP2.
The CAU fight feels much less personal.

    • @Kohana64
      @Kohana64  Год назад +6

That actually makes a lot of sense. If you just kind of rush through the main story, it's unlikely you'd even know what's going on with the CAU, so that being the boss to close out the trilogy may seem odd. I think that it would've helped to build Dark Samus up as more of a threat, thus creating a stronger payoff. Thanks for the thought!

Something interesting to note about Metroid Prime 1 and 2 compared to 3 is in the first two games you may go through about 70% of the explorable level while going through the game and they leave that 30% for upgrade hunting. In Prime 3 however I found that by the time I finished the game, I'd more or less explored everything and the game had naturally got me to complete map exploration- hence why I feel like I was just given upgrades rather than have to hunt for them like in 1 and 2.

    • @legrandliseurtri7495
      @legrandliseurtri7495 Год назад +1

That's not really accurate. I'd say that prime 1 and 2 actually have a lot more mandatory map exploration. Prime 3 lets you never return to Norion if you want to, it lets you never explore a massive section in the middle of Bryyo if you want to, it lets you ignore big parts of Valhalla if you want to. Meanwhile, Prime 1 has some optional sections in Chozo ruins and that's kind of it. Prime 2 has some optional sections in Agon Wastes and Torvus Bog, and I feel like I'm being generous by calling those ''sections'', it's more like 2 or 3 rooms here and there.
I think the difference that you noticed is that in prime 3 you find the energy cells you need naturally instead of at the very end of the game, for one, and for two, Norion and Elysia can be completed long before the endgame. Neither of them requires more than the spiderball to fully clear them.

corruption is my second favorite in the trilogy. Mostly it's probably nostalgia, part of it not thinking motion controls are the satan, but corruption did what no other prime game did. It connected Samus into the world she's part off. She interacts with her fellow bounty hunters, she feels remorse for letting them die because of the mistakes in mp2.

I don't think 3 is the best of the trilogy, but if you like 1 and 2 I think there's still a lot here to enjoy! I bounced off it so quick when it released. I just finished the whole trilogy last month and don't understand why I disliked it so much at first. Once you get past the intro it's metroid prime game play all the way! Personally, I don't understand the negative discourse around the ship traveling - it's basically like an elevator at the end of a level that takes you to ANY region. All the prime games have elevators at the end of levels connecting them together - prime 3 just puts your ship there instead.

After playing all three, I legit cannot pick a favorite. I love them all. They work so well as a unit, and they all do so much right, while doing very little that actually matters wrong. I know this game didn't reach the sky for everyone, but for me it absolutely hits and feels exactly comparable to the prior two experiences with the Prime games. They are all incredible and until Prime 4 comes out and I gauge that one, I genuinely cannot pick a favorite because they're all so good and progress into each other so well.
Especially with lore. The mystery and exact events revolving around Metroid Prime and Dark Samus and the mechanism of how phazon created Dark Aether, and how Metroid Prime as a creature exists can all be theorized about and you can easily come to a conclusion that works because of the narrative implications that Prime 3 introduces. It's one of few series I think that made narrative decisions and implications that retroactively affect and explain things in prior entries that works, and not only works, but knocks it out of the park. It's a perfect showing of how you can leave certain things unexplained for the audience to figure out by leaving the right breadcrumbs. I love these games unconditionally, all three.

I bought this on release but didn't finish it until 2020 when I did a full series playthrough, despite loving the first two Prime games. I downloaded a save file with the online-only achievements and hypermode difficulty unlocked so I could jump straight into it.
Prime 3 shares a lot of the same problems I had with Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword and Other M. They feel designed for a player who immediately stops playing if they aren't told exactly what to do or where to go. They introduce lots of mechanics that are just one-off distractions instead of becoming core gameplay elements. Instead of using your items or abilities or unlock new parts of the game world, they're locked off until the story gives you a reason to go there.
It's hard to remember most of the new powerups you get in Prime 3. Most of them are just keys that allow you to progress instead of having actual use in combat. Hypermode is fun to use and the bosses on the hardest difficulty were still challenging with it, but it meant you're playing the game the exact same way the entire time instead of becoming progressively more capable and powerful like all the other Metroid games. The new planets weren't all that interesting even with scanning, but it was nice to learn how Tallon IV and Aether are doing after what you did to help them.

The main thing that was missing was no timed escape run from a dying Phaze. Samus is no stranger to destroying planets, but Phaze is the only planet Samus destroys that DOESN’T have an escape sequence, and it all happens off screen.

To this day I'm not 100% sure why I dont like corruption as much as the other 2 primes.
Also since Metroid Prime 4 is going to be released on switch (or switch 2 depending on how much longer we have to wait) it seems inevitable at this point that Retro will make Metroid Prime 4 massively open world like they intended with corruption. I'm open to this as long as it is done well and doesn't take away from the core prime experience.

A fitting retrospective on my favorite game trilogy. In anticipation of Prime 4 these videos are like a refresher. I'll be buying Metroid Prime Remastered for the switch soon since there are a few new things added to that version. I look forward to working my way down after getting that badass Phazon Suit.
Prime 3 is a very close 2nd to prime 1 for me. I actually enjoyed it being a bit more linear and action oriented since the mystery of phazon is at its conclusion and now you're in an all out war. The federation is there. Other bounty hunters are there. The space pirates are there. Dark Samus looms and takes on an almost supernatural aura. It's all hands on deck! The expansion of the Phazon lore is what I love. Finally we understand that on Tallon IV and Aether it was a leviathan seed that crashed into the planets. One weird thing is that the super dangerous red phazon was absent despite being in the first game. The corruption aspect was interesting since if you allowed yourself to be overwhelmed by the PED suit you'd become a dark Samus yourself. An overall great game with a great ending. Especially if you got all of the items. You'll see that someone is following you after you leave the federation armada. I'm sure the premise for prime 4 will answer who or what that is.

Great vid, I honestly love what prime 3 brought to the trilogy. Sure, it’s not as maybe atmospheric and gives you that alone feeling the first two do, but man I honestly think prime 3 might have some of the best Metroid moments ever. Great bosses, cool cutscenes and sequences, it sacrificed a lot that made the first two great but did it different enough to make it amazing to me

i respect their way of trying to flesh out the world samus occupies but i’ve always felt they metroid is the encapsulation of ‘actions speak louder then words’ i sort of like the idea that in my own head canon i’ve never heard samus say a word (probably in a lot of peoples tbh)

I highly recommend Federation force. It is genuinely the most fun multiplayer experience I’ve ever had. if you can get some friends together I couldn’t recommend it enough. It’s fun playing it alone but playing it with other people is the best way to experience it. It deserves more credit than what most people give it and most of the people that complain about the game haven’t even played it

Considering the whole "one month later" thing, this might actually be the longest timespan of any Metroid game. Usually, the events of the games probably take place in pretty much real time, however long it takes you to beat it is however long it actually took in-universe, but in this game, things take place over a month and change.

I really liked the grapple upgrade that let you grab an enemy and pull their energy out to heal yourself or push some of your own energy into them to overload them to death. I forget the real name of it, but I call it the Metroid Beam, since it does the same thing to Samus' enemies that a metroid does. I was really disappointed by the fact that you couldn't use this ability on enemies without shields though...

Also i really wish they put a main boss in the G.F.S vallhala when unlocking the code for the wormhole instead of the laughing stock instakill omega metroid. A meaty boss here wouldve been welcomed.

The demolition guys are essentially combat engineers. In any standing army they aren't going to be your best armored or trained troops, in terms of combat. That's not their role.
Now, relying on Samus to do all the heavy lifting when you nominally have an army at your disposal IS a legitimate concern, but that's been the case for every interaction Samus has ever had with the federation across all games.

hypermode overloads so you have to rapidly shoot to off gas.
In addition to that, your suit fails to deactivate hypermode so it turns off automatically.
The problem is that it builds and builds, combined with you feeling when it will turn off equals full life no matter what since you would just end close to full life.

Mogenars theme is nearly top tier for me. In video games and cinematic boss music. As well as dark samus and the aurora unit slow version. Heavy hitting base and recognizeable notes. Really helps give these characters, places and situations some real identity. Keeping immersion fully intact. I really dig many of this games tracks though i like prime 1 and 2 echoes as really great exploration music. But along with slower exploration music that ties in with the previous games This one has a sense of keeping you on the move. Samus mission is urgent. So you have more Striking music more music that conveys overwhelment. Which i feel is good trying to sell the desperate feeling of the attack on norion. The phazon corruption of you of your comrades of everything. The destruction of the leviathan seeds it just goes really well for a soundtrack

A lot of your critiques of the game were on point. I understand your dislike of how the planets were structured, but they were the best aesthetically in the entire series.
I hope Prime 4 does a good job of building Sylux up as a rival. I don't really get why people were drawn to him after his debut in Metroid Prime Hunters. I would hate to see Sylux treated like Raven Beak was in Dread, where you only interact once at the beginning and never again until the end of the game.

Corruption is good as an ending to the phazon story if you want to see what happens. It's also interesting seeing Samus slowly become corrupt. But the game is the least fun entry. It's not because of motion controls for me but it was due to the fact that it was much more crowded with characters and that broke the immersion for me. The technology just wasn't there for so many NPCs to be thrown in.

one thing the game did right, though I did like this game, was the fights against the other bounty hunters especially the one where you fight the shapeshifter which was the most sad one, being that you fight this shapeshifter that she can be anything she wants, and because of Dark Samus you have to kill her. then defeating her you feel the urge of getting revenge from what Samus was forced to do.

Metroid Prime 3 was the first Metroid game I ever completed and I learnt to play with Wii motion controls and have always favoured them over the GameCube's controls so much so that I have completed Prime and Prime 2 as part of the trilogy released on Wii. I have never managed to complete Prime or Prime 2 on the GC due to struggling with the original's controls. Never played on PC (yet)

I had to watch the ending cut scenes for Prime 1 and Prime 2 because I just couldn't beat those games.
Prime 3 was the one I finally pulled through and completed in its entirety.
With Prime 1 I got very far into the game but became lost getting the Chozo artifacts.
In Prime 2 I gave up when I faced this difficult morphball, tunneling puzzel worm-y boss. Tried for hours but just couldn't master it.

Yeah I don't get that critique at all either. You are still isolated most of the game, it's just broken up a bit. Going to planets where the inhabitants are no longer there and never running into anybody else can only not be weird or repetitive for so long.

Although I do considered Prime 3 to be the weakest of the Prime Trilogy, it's still an great game and an good finale for the Prime games. For now. Don't know when Prime 4 will come or if it will come. One thing I appreciated about Prime 3 is that amount of collectables u only need to reach the final area. Unlike the first 2 Prime games where u need all the collectables to reach the final areas ( Chozo Artifact and Sky Temple Key ), Prime 3 only let u get 5 or 6 out of 10 Power Cells to reach the final level and the extra cells u can get are for more inventory or upgrade u can get. That's something I hope Prime 4 does if it doea something like this again. It would be alot tolerable. Now as far as being an good introduction to the Metroid franchise. In terms of 3D Metroid games, maybe. But as first Metroid game in general, Zero Mission is an fantastic starting point to get into Metroid and it's one of the best titles for the franchise. But still, Prime 3 isn't to shabby to start with either. So yeah. What an great adventure.

My biggest complaint with corruption was the lack of “isolation” the other two games had. The inclusion of the space marines really killed that vibe for me. Prime 1 it’s just you and a hostile planet. Echoes has U-mos but he made surviving every trek back to the temple all the more satisfying when you finally get that sense of safety. I never felt “small” or uneasy in Corruption. I wish they would have just used the other hunters - the only friendly faces in these hostile worlds and they’re out to kill you

I'm kind of the opposite about this. Like metroid prime 1 is my favorite game of all time with the only real issue I had with it was not being able to spin the camera when in morph ball but eventually getting used to it with backtracking more.
However for me Echoes was extremely tedious, boring, and repetitive. With the slowest progression in the series. However I did enjoy the story and the official inclusion of Dark Samus.
With Corruption the only big issue I had was how over powered the hypermode was and most sections being so linear However I still prefer that over Echoes map layouts. I also enjoy the ascetic of Corrutpiom over Echoes along with the story itself though still neither beats Prime 1.
Overall I'd rank the games as 1, 3, 2 but note that they all have strengths and weaknesses and is still one of my favorite trilogies of any franchise
