Violator is a masterpiece
There's not one bad song on that album. I saw them in Maryland back then. Front 242 was warming up for them.
I remember me and a friend skipped school to buy Black Celebration when it was released 😄
My absolute favorite DM album
It really is. All the songs are superb, and different, and yet fit together into a cohesive sum-is-greater-than-the-parts whole. Fantastic production work, great songwriting, great singing, some of the best filterswept basslines ever recorded. Not a single thing out of place.
Albums perfection
It is pretty impressive. I remember getting it from a record store near my high school. There is something slightly constricted about it and it is a bit painful. Violator is like 6x better than Spirit. It is one of my for real CDs not from the internet sshhh. I also have the piano book in mint condition.
I think the song is saying that sometimes the moment is so perfect that it just needs silence to be appreciated. Words detract from that perfection.
nola speaker spot on!
Yeah, I've always interpreted it as 'i love you. shut up.' to appreciate and reflect on a brief moment in time you wish could last forever.
You nailed it! Those moments words could never describe that truly make real loving relationships stay strong.
The video is based on King Canute who showed you can not hold back the tide. Time and tide wait for no man. You can't take hurtful words back, people can use words like love and not mean it, where as a hug or kiss can show you everything. After the screaming and fighting, enjoy the silence. Awkward words can ruin a perfect moment when no words were needed.
Nice summary.
You really got that much from the video??? He isn't always by the ocean/beach. He's in the mountains at the beginning of the video, and all he does is sit in his lounger, in various places. I agree with the rest of what you said. I've never heard the video was based on King Canute, even from the band itself (or maybe they did say it, but I didn't know who King Canute was).
According to Director Anton Corbijn the whole concept of this video was to show that even the mightiest of men on earth sometimes needs a chair to sit and rest.
Dave Gahan for his part didn't like the fact that he was freezing his balls off in the snow hauling that chair around.
@@RastaSaiyaman I think I remember hearing about that "even the mightiest man needs a place to sit."
Essentially correct. But one key thing is to be King or Queen of your domain for peacefulness.
This song literally changed my 13-year-old life. I grew up in the 80s and early 90s without a VCR or (more importantly) MTV, which basically made me Amish during that era, so I was quite out of the loop for anything besides Top 40 music. But late one night, the local pop station played "Enjoy the Silence", possibly by accident? Anyway, it was a revelation to me. Before, I'd listen to whatever was on the radio and say Meh, whatever. This song made me into a fan, not just of Depeche Mode, but of music in general, music that was worth going out of my way to find.
Yes! Beautifully expressed
That's when you know you've found someone special. When you can sit together and comfortably share a silence.
Pulp fiction?
i will never forget the feeling i got when i first heard this song. a true masterpiece. i feel so alive every time i listen to it.
I always understood the meaning of the song as being in a relationship where there may be some frequent arguing but despite that they love each other. He's saying all he ever wanted and needed is there in his arms...He wants to enjoy the silence of each other's company. They don't have to speak, it's okay to sit in silence and just enjoy their love with no words that can hurt either one of them even for that moment.
I have always thought he was talking to his daughter "can't you understand, oh my little girl".
It could also be a relationship where promises are made and broken. Like don't tell we're going to be together. Just be with me.
I always took this song as he made vain promises "words" to the mother of his child and eventually divorced her, meaning words are spoken but actions are what matters. The lines "vows are spoken, to be broken, feelings are intense, words are trivial. Pleasures remain, so does the pain. Words are meaningless and forgettable." show this. The part "all I ever wanted, all I ever needed is here, in my arms." is about his daughter which is all he has left after the divorce and all that matters to him.
@@youtpfpm6097 Martin Gore wrote this in 1989 , where he began dating his first wife, so might be her. But also could be anyone :-)
I always viewed it like... Your laying in bed together holding each other not speaking just feeling the love. Then she says... Did you remember the trash? That's when you realize you were alone feeling the love & togetherness, While she was inventorying what got done that day so no job was forgotten.
i sort of get this. i see this song as a bit of uneccessary pillow talk. no words were needed between the couple in question but once uttered break the perfect moment.
Lolz
Omg finally THE MODE!!!!!
This song means a lot to me. During the First Gulf War, early 1991, waiting for the shooting war to start I was in the northern Saudi Arabian desert. Open desert - flat and sandy for as far as the eye could see ... in all directions.
I had a small cassette player and my sister had sent me Depeche Mode's 'Violator' tape. I listened to this as I looked out over the desert. Waiting for the war to start.
I saw and did things when the ground war kicked off, which took me over twenty years to speak to my wife about. This song remained with me.
After the war I had met my soon-to-be wife. We both enjoyed Depeche Mode ... and this particular song took on new meaning for me. "All I ever wanted, all I ever needed - was here in my arms"
"Enjoy the Silence"!! One of the best concerts I ever saw was seeing Depeche Mode!! They are GR8!! Definitely no silence in their concerts!
Remember telling my secondary school friends when "Strangelove" came out... these guys are going to be EVERYWHERE in a few years. Boom. Out came 'Violator'
They were already everywhere years before Violator (in the UK, they were huge throughout the 80s)
@@skeptical_sorcerer In the Europe and to electronic fans in the US maybe. In everyday American households and FM radio visibility... they were still on the periphery. Violator put them into that mass demographic. Few English bands reach that level. It's a phenomenal achievement.
De-PESH mode.
One of their underappreciated songs is "Waiting For The Night to fall"
That's my personal favorite. "Blue Dress" is up there too
I'm craving peach cobbler pie now.
De-PECHAY mo-DAY
@@ViceCityDJ Is that the Dog Latin version of their name? 🤣😂😅😆
Naw it’s dapeach mode
The backdrop of Depeche Mode is basically London-centric early 1980s dance performed initially on keyboards carried from place to place and ultimately experimentation through samplers, leading to further experimentation with guitars and a more brooding sound. It's ultimately savagely European but sold by the bucketloads.
Alan Wilder is Mozart as Fletcher is Clapmaster!
LOVE LOVE LOVE Depeche Mode!!!! OMG such great memories I still have this disc! Unique sound, beautifully crafted club dance music with some western twang folded in. Enjoy the Silence is one of my favorites. I remember dancing to this one getting all sweaty! The club version was definitely longer. Can't remember where I heard it first, might have been Denver.. or Amsterdam. Definitely in a club somewhere back in the 90's, GOOD TIMES!!!!
It's not about overall communication, it's about trying to express those feelings in words, just being there is better than anything else.
yes yes and yess, agreed!
I always get from that song is that is about a toxic relationship where they love each other, but every time they try to talk they end up in arguments, hurting each other. Only when they don't say anything and just hug each is that feelings can truly be expressed. Enjoy the silence.
As an introvert I relate to the line “words...come crashing into my little world”. Psychologists describe introverts as having a very developed inner world they retreat to after extended interaction. And talking can really dampen that peaceful silence we enjoy while reflecting inward...or outward to nature, like Dave does here. Navigating the inner landscape of our minds through introspection or reading books feels much like the images in this video, being kings/queens of our own little world.
this makes my heart melt
I love Depeche mode I'm actually in the concert footage of the last date of the American tour in 1988 July 18th at the Rose bowl California!! You can see my banner that my sister and myself were waving big huge white banner that was an awesome show!. I seen them so many other times but that really was the best show that I saw them in!! 😁
Very envious. Saw them all over in the UK - now that I live in US maybe one day I can seem in Cali

A lot of good music from the 80's, and absolutely a lot of the worst. Too many synthesizers and electronic drums. And some of those hair-do's. Ay yi yi!!!
Don't forget The Smiths, Joy Division and New Order

Really?
Is this the first time youve heard this masterpiece?
Welcome to the devoted😀
My MUSICAL TRUE LOVE! ❤️
(Duh•pehsh Mowd)
This song was originally meant to be one of Martin's gorgeous ballad's (see: Somebody & A Question of Lust)... But Alan suggested turning it into a dance track, which made this a BIG HIT for them.
As for it's meaning... I always felt that it refers to that amazing time & place when you're with someone you love, who loves you too - when you genuinely trust, like, & understand each other - and you can simply BE together...
Just. BE.
No words. No plans. No distractions. And in that silence, together, nothing is missing or boring or 'wrong'. You're perfectly contented, because being together, there, in silence, is ENOUGH. In fact... it's the most precious thing ever, because there's no one else with whom you can share such a simple thing, and be SO fulfilled.
And I've also known MANY guys & men who wanted their partners to KNOW they felt that way... To just be calm, quiet their inner worries for a few minutes, and simply BREATHE - so they could share that simple, special, cosmic/zen moment of bonding together... instead of being wrapped up in trying to make everything perfect or BE perfect... Because it already IS. 💗
Love your comment !
@@ninawildr4207 Thanks!
Debbie Love, You fully understand the brilliance and yet simplicity of this beautiful ballad. Thank You!
This is a great jam. Keep on the 80s train... Look up: Tears for Fears- Everybody Wants To Rule The World
Pale Shelter or Change
Women in chains
Honestly anything by them
Add to that list: Sowing the seeds of love.
Mad world
This is one of their best songs in my opinion. This is one classy band that's been around a long time. Another great group to look at is TEARS FOR FEARS, EVERYONE WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD.
This is it! This is my No.1 Song!

I remember the first time I heard this song. I was it a bar in Italy and it came on the TV. It was Notte music. I fell in love to the song the first time I heard it.
They've been around since the very late 70s, their first big hits came from the album 'Speak And Spell'

Much Love to You ❤️
I feel like you don't really understand that artists do not always choose the story line of the videos that go with their singles. Quite often, a music video producer would come up with some mad idea and the artists would go along with it. Basically, you can't presume that what the visuals are showing is necessarily a match to whatever the song writer was feeling. Videos are an art of their own. The music is much, much, much more important than any video. The music is the message, the video is just one person's vision. Also, song lyrics can't always be taken literally. Sometimes they are nonsense. Sometimes they are metaphoric. Sometimes they are supposed to mean a very specific thing, sometimes they are wide open to a bajillion interpretations. On this song, I don't think he is saying there should never be any communication, just that sometimes, quite a lot of guys wish girls would just shut up and fuck. And probably vice versa! Anyway, no song is supposed to be a guide for life. It's a vibe, a feeling, a moment, an idea. Not a manifesto :)
Love ❤️ your comment!🤣
the video was made by anton corbijn who did more graphic stuff for depeche mode, hes also known for the video of nirvana's Heart-Shaped Box for which he won an mtv award
Yes, often music videos are based more on the feel of the music than the actual lyrics. The worst, most unimaginative videos are the ones where they lyrics are "She looked out the window" and they show a girl looking out the window!
Confusion is sex
You nailed it!! Definitely... that's the problem with this "reactions", they don't have an idea!!
I've never felt that this song is about relationship in general. I feel that its just about the moment when you FEEL the love..and the feeling is so strong that you dont even have/want to say anything. Because when you feel the love that is bigger than the world or anything you can comprehend..the only thing words and speaking can do, is to ruin the moment..when you feel that connection with someone..words are meaningless and forgettable.
The video for me is a metaphorical..everyone thinks KING has to have everything (money, power, admiration, fame, love ect) but he just wants a quiet place to sit and a peace of mind..when in love, people often think its more important what you say to eachother (and in these days how you present your relationship in social media)..and the things that really matters remains undone
Personally I agree with the song, when you've found someone and you really feel a deep connection with that person, you don't need to talk to understand each other and words can interfere more than anything.
Halo next, please?
Can you also react to "People Are People" plz?!
ruclips.net/video/gO1hN2ifJZU/видео.html
I can never remember when I heard Depeche Mode for the first time, I was just a brazilian little kid in the 90's (I was maybe 7 or 8), haven't learned english yet, so I only got the feeling the music got in me, no idea what they talked about, but to this day, this song makes me feel a nostalgic feeling, of a time I didn't really live. Also, this video is one of my favorites in the world.
You usually guess drugs, but this time you guessed relationships.
The lead singer was a heroin addict and this song is one of the most iconic songs about heroin ever made.
Actually no. Martin Gore wrote the song and Dave just sang it. It is about the end of a relationship in its decaying period when two people have nothing else to say to one another that isn't meaningless and empty. "Never Let Me Down Again" is about heroin.
@@charlesswitzer8378
I've heard arguments for both sides of the coin on this, but the album itself is about addiction.
And the lyrics of the song are absolute perfection for heroin.
I mean, it's possible to see it either way.
It's also possible they don't want people to think of it as a heroin song because it is such a beautiful melody they don't want to cause people to fall into that, knowing that they experienced it themselves.
One i asked for. Finally, an upper tier song.
That melody during the breaks between verses is like, the peak of euphoria and true bliss that you can get lost in, love it. I live for euphoric songs like this.
Even in your interpretation of this song, there is a moment of comfortable silence with the right person where no words are needed.
Yes!
One of the best songs of 1990. It's impossible to transport yourself to then and hear it with fresh ears, but this was a HOT track. Sounded amazing.
He's telling his girl how much he loves her (All I wanted, all I ever needed, is here, in my arms) and he knows that words can't make the feelings he has for her any greater, he's afraid they can only do harm (because they're not adequate to describe his feelings). He wants her to know how he feels, but also to know why he can't express himself properly - words are faulty in many ways and can only do damage to a relationship over time because of their inadequacies. For instance, "Vow are spoken/to be broken." You can't trust a person's words, only their true feelings matter.
This is my go to "breathe and calm your ass down" song. Also, the "all i every wanted, all i ever needed is here in my arms" part used to be my alarm song for the mornings... I'd always way up with my cat snuggled with me... bless his departed soul.
Pls react to TEARS FOR FEARS - HEAD OVER HEELS Xx
Yes!
One of the best songs made in history. It was my first Depeche song I heard and saw on TV back in 1990.
Depeche Mode Masterpiece. Love all the silhouette shots of the band. In 1990 I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
I love watching your videos. I try to get people hooked on my favorite songs and I love the fact that you are so open to so many genres of music. Depeche Mode is one of my favorite bands, been a fan since the 80’s. I feel the song means that sometimes, unspoken feelings mean more than any words you can say. Cherish the quiet, loving times where a hug or soft touch says it all. Anyway, thanks for the entertaining videos!!
Just realized this: I think its about being a parent. When you hug your child, at that moment, all you need is silence.
The communication that he speaks of is telepathic. She knows & he knows too.
People are people is a great one, for what's happening today in America! Peace ✌
That was her first Depeche reaction ☺
Too many words make you long for silence.. He's looking for solitude from all the meaningless words.. Thanks for all your vids!!
Depeche Mode...always loved their song Personal Jesus.
My absolute favorite band and song! Hearing it live was one of the best moments of my life. No matter how many time I listen to this song, it always gives me the same feeling. Never gets old
I can't believe this song is 30 years old. It reminds me of hanging out with my cousin as teens. So crazy!
This is one of my favorites masterpiece's from DM! I have been listening to them since the 80's. You will be quite busy if you are recently discovering Depeche Mode!😁
I love your reactions! You are the most genuine!
Strange Love is my favorite song by Depeche Mode
Thank you for reacting to this genius band. They deserve all the flowers and recognition. I was a kid when this song came out and it reminds me of my mom blasting it in the car and then some years later, getting to watch them perform it live during their Devotional tour. An epic electro-pop masterpiece.
I first heard this masterpiece when it 1st came out - I immediately went out and bought the 12" vinyl, and played it to death! Still love it - thanks for your reaction 👏
Depeche mode is not pronounced that way.
Deh peh-sh mode.
De peach😂
IKR! I WANTED TO SAY PRONOUNCE IT LIKE YOU'RE GOING TO SAY "JOE PESCI," GET THAT "PESC" IN THERE,! SHE WAS SAYING IT LIKE SHE WANTED TO SAY PEACH! 😂
Mz. Pinkeyez well, it’s not like she would know like we knew back when it was in the radio.
snob
@@lisacaron7224 I understand that I was just trying to give her something easy to go on by saying the "peche" part if you don't see that oh well I'm sorry!.
the song is about living in the moment - the tragedy of a forbidden love - knowing you both shouldnt be with each other but you are inexorably drawn to each other- who he wants to be with is obligated to be with another for whatever reason and the only time he is truely happy is when he is with that partner.
whatever words spoken are useless - whats most important is simply reveling in the moment he is with them because the minute words are exchanged it will be to say good bye or to promise things that cannot be
Depeche mode is a huge group, i think the only dance and new wave band that plays arenas and stadiums around the world in there genre of music ,so many classics
Thanks for doing this! He’s not talking about a love relationship. He’s simply talking about the Silence itself, that’s all. To embrace it and enjoy it, the all around you, without words nor description necessary
Thank you. I grew up listening to them in the 90s. They are come of the best musicians out there.
Senior in high school when this dropped and it changed my whole perspective. It got me through a lot of difficult night's.
As I understand it, the message is ACTIONS speak more than WORDS. And that intimacy is created in the silences more than through the words. I love Depeche Mode. And as someone else said, their album Violator is a Masterpiece.
The message that I get from Enjoy the Silence... when there's to much talking in the relationship after a while you just say words no meaning behind it. It's in those instances of silence that true feelings come through.
Communication is needed in a relationship when people are unsure of the strength of their relationship... When two people are truly in love they need no words of reassurance because they already KNOW....
his voice is rare, not many singers have that baritone voice, but they have so many great songs, talented band
I was a freshman in high school when this song came out. Damn, I grew up during the best time in music.
One of my FAVORITE songs EVER! This is one of those songs that hooked me immediately, literally from the first few notes. I was 30 when this came out and it still moves me at 60. I should add that I heard the extended version FIRST, and did not see the video, mainly because I just wasn’t into videos. As for the lyrics, yeah they were cool, but it was the dark and melodic tone of the song that intrigued me. If you enjoy this song you MUST listen to the long version (not a remix).
thanks for the video!always so interesting to hear other peoples thought about songs
This is a song about enjoying an embrace of love in a moment and that words can only complicate that moment.
Deh-Pesh-Mode!!! I have seen them in concert 8 times...my all time favourite band.
One of the BEST albums from DM. I can play it back to front and not get tired of it.
In a relationship communication is important, but what is even more critical is the ability to just hold each other in silence and fell the love. If you can not be together in silence and feel the intense love, then no amount of talking will change that.
I was like 20 then this came out, still love this band... They're timeless...........
Depeche Mode, Erasure, The Cure, Anything Box, Joy Division, etc...Dancing to New Wave/Alternative in the Chicago clubs as a teenager in the mid 90's.
I used to love this song! I always took this song as to be from a spiritual angle. Even as a kid lol. Because of the scenery and when you enjoy the silence, you're thinking and reflecting
Actions speak louder than words.
Changed my musical life. Favorite band of all time!
The whole "king" thing I interpret as "look at all this land I reign over (all the stuff i have). But it is empty, barren and without meaning". Turns out all "the king" ever needed he holds in his arms (his girl).
I also do not believe the song is about an entire relationship but a singular moment.
its for me the best band of the world ,and sometimes the silence its gold ,and words are poison , because silence are state of peace of mind ,,,,DEPECHE MODE THE BEST.
This is one awsome group one of my favs...apart of my party days...u need to see the group do it ..awsome...want a fan of the vidio...another fav is..just cant get enough
The basic gist: Talk all you want, but when you are here with me and in my arms, I know you are mine.
Saying you love me, but being somewhere else and being with someone else, means words are meaningless.
Talk is cheap. Actions matter.
Tears for fears...”Change”, extended version!
I can't help but see this song as an ode to heroin. The protagonist is in a relationship with both his partner, and his addiction, and he is choosing his addiction over his partner. All he ever wanted and needed is in the veins in his arms. He doesn't want to be disturbed from his high by his partner shouting at him to try to get some sense out of him. Everything is meaningless and forgettable when he is rushing on his run. Nothing else matters, not even the real world.
One of the most underrated yet best songs ever written. The lyrics are golden and the chorus is something else
As for this music video, it was directed by Dutch artist Anton Corbijn, who's mainly a still photographer, you can see it in the way the images are constructed. DM lead singer Dave Gahan was flown over the world to get the different scenes, wearing a regal robe and crown and carrying a beach chair. Gahan said that he didn't get what Corbijn wanted to say with the video and that shot in the snow covered mountains was indeed as you said bitter cold.
Corbijn told Gahan that the concept was to show how even the mightiest of all men on earth sometimes just need to sit down and rest.
Depeche Mode, here's more of their "Take you on a journey" kind of songs, similar to enjoy the silence
- A question of lust
- Home
- It's no good
- Behind the wheel
The song is saying that there are "some" moments (not all), that need no words. Just let the emotion wash over you. (In silence).
Depeche Mode are my favourite band of all time. Their back catalogue is stunning, especially the way they evolved over the years. So many tracks you could listen to! Shake The Disease, But Not Tonight, Never Let Me Down Again, I Feel You, Barrel Of A Gun, Policy Of Truth, Stripped. I could go on forever 🤣

This is an absolute classic, one of the best songs of the 90s imo. Always get chills listening to it, and that keyboard riff is amazing. Another couple of their songs I recommend are Just Can't Get Enough, and the Hardfloor remix of It's No Good.
