That Sneaky Drum Fill | Drum Lesson

- Alright drummers, in this lesson I will teach you a fun way to sneak a bit of spice into simple fills. This one isn't about blowing people doors off, it's about finding a balance between the chops swimming around in your head, and the fills that you SHOULD be playing when you are on a gig. Enjoy it, practice it and most importantly... make it your own!

your ability to explain and teach is almost as impressive as your drum skills.
Much appreciate Thom! That's my true passion :)
Exactly, you said it right thomaaz!
Lol, yeah. When I started learning to play drums and people are telling me what rudiments are called and how to mouth them, all I said was WTF. That sounds made up lol. It's only until you begin to advance you understand it like your grandfather explaining his bowel functions.
Low key diss
I too did all those wedding gigs, my wife still thinks I am a drummer and I haven't had a kit for about 40 years ( I'm 80 ). But when I sit down my thighs are a set of Ludwigs, a hard surface is my practice pad. Inthe kitchen, I'm Buddy Rich. Wolf Trap is my theme music. I guess once a drummer, always a drummer. Love your RUclips sets.
haha RON your comment made my day! Say hello to your family. Grts from Belgium, and be safe.
@@BobSchoepenjr Hi Bob, thank you for getting in touch with me, so good to hear from you and meet my family. All my best to you all, I'm happy to know you, We drummers, past or present need to stick (no pun intended) together.
Sometimes I get a bit nervous watching drumming videos online because I can find it incredibly daunting watching a really talented drummer play something so great and make it look so easy. But I find you so inspiring. You make me want to continue learning as much as I can on the drums :)

Oh my god, after all of these years - someone has mapped my brain activity
LOL!!! Welcome to the club :)
@@mikeslessons
Feels good to hear it from someone else's point if view, you know? Haha, cheers buddy! 🤘
"Playing with confidence takes so much repetition, that's where the confidence comes from."
I love your example of the "I've been learning that fill," followed by the awkward "yeah"....it's like you know me. 😂
Jonathan, I wouldn't know to say it unless I had been through it myself... MANY time, LOL
@@mikeslessons haha, we probably all have at some point.
@@mikeslessons random question, have you ever listened to the band Lettuce?
@@jonathanbormann5077 Yep, Adam and I are good friends. Lettuce is amazing!
@@mikeslessons should have figured...lol. Listening to their new album and I'm blown away. Lovin it.
I’ve never seen nor heard of this cat. With the ocean of channels like these, I’m SURPRISED to find this guy! He’s “friendly and INforMATIONAL!”
No bad ego; no fronts; no age-inappropriate vines or dyed lettuce; and really unique topic niche (here for SURE). I’m SUBBED! A nice balance between Harry Miree and Nate. 🤘🤙
AJ Constantine Thanks AJ! That means a lot my friend. Glad ya found me :) 🙏🍵🙏🍵
AJ Constantine : we forgive you😂
Finally, an online drum tutor who gets to the point quickly, like it, v cool.
Awe man... thank you so much 🙏🍵🙏🍵
"Ooh I worked on that fill! Here it comes..." 🤣 I thought that was just me! Another great lesson Mike, thank you. Very happy to have found your channel. 👌👍🥁👊
That snare sounds so good I had to re-watch the whole video because I couldn't focus on the fill hahaha
Thanks 🙏🙏🙏 and... NO snare mic :)
@@mikeslessons Exactly why I can't help but listen to it more than the explanation of the fill 😂
For some artists I love their playing, for some I love their representation, for some it's something else. But for Mike... He's the whole package of a great drummer, a great teacher and a guy with keen sense of representation (Visuals, Videography, content, everything... ). I learn so much from him.
I dream to meet you one day, Mike!!! ❤️
You're not "a "drummer.....you're "THE DRUMMER" ...your not lucky To have a gretsch drum kit, the drum kit is lucky To have you!!!😁 you truly are passionate human being , you not only make me wanna be a better drummer , but a better personne To ! I just discover you a month ago , after à few year of stopping playing drum , now i'm going back on the kit !! Merci beaucoup Mike !! Greeting from the province of Québec !!
As a wedding drummer and pop session drummer - @0:08 this is EAXTLY what is going through my head!
LOL! I wasn't kidding at all. Before this career that I have now it was all cover gigs and weddings and man... I was CHOPPING out in my head while playing Girl From Ipanema 😂😂😂
Absolutely love this Breakdown for sneaky fill. But damn son your video editing is something out of Hollywood brother! Talk about adding some “paprika” and “spice”. It's not just in your playing and way of explaining complex Drumming skills but your video editing "chops".... Are stellar! That's some serious spice right there too! 👊👍
How dare you suggest that something like 3:05 ever happened to me?
OK, maybe once or twice. It’s a great way to get the band’s instant attention!
3:05 has that ever not happened to me? 😂😂
5:23 thats me, the best mouth drummer in town.
My man you are an amazing teacher!
I love how he talks about a fill like it’s a person. This dude cracks me up😂
"I'm afraid you have underestimated my sneekyness". Sneeky sneeky. Very cool. Love your enthusiasm and skill .
Ok I’m in. Love your energy.
3:05... I’ve been there more times than I can count 🥵
This is great. Picked it up very quickly and already came up with “my” versions for use from now until the day of time, lol. Thanks Mike
the beginning was hilarious
You’re the man Mike. Your attitude is as accomplished as your chops bud. Stay safe 🇨🇦
3:06 Had me laughinggggggggg
That was great Mike!
So much fun finding your channel! So entertaining, short and to the point, and enlightening for a rusty barely intermediate. Getting back into drums after a 12 year hiatus, being an average wannabe guitarist forever, and learning how to play drums back then from Rock Band. Random youtube suggestion brought me here, and I am having fun digging through the library of fun and helpful stuff! Happy New Year and byeya 2020!
Just started watching a few of your videos and I have to say, I just love your energy and enthusiasm. You make it fun to want to learn new things. Thanks!
Oh man this fill feels good.. I needed something to get me out of the boom deck of Doom
Looove it. Really awesome methodology and great “music” humor. Thanks for putting these videos out
Awesome video, made me laugh a few times. Definitely one of the most laid back, non scripted, authentic drum lessons out there!
Great attitude. Love it.
i just love this guy...always great lessons.
must be around 10 years on from when I started watching you're videos. Spent a bit of time on your live lesson. I'm still learning new things form you!
Cheers for the education!
This is my first time watching any of your videos and I instantly subscribed..
You are a natural, thank you for explaining it so well!!.
Just saw this clip... Infectious fun... Mike, you are a great teacher... Breaking out the metronome today and getting to it!
Thanks...
Great video Mike, sounds very clean and fluid thanks for sharing!
Awesome lesson as always Mike. That solo was insane!
You sir are amazing, mad props to you.
Tasty stuff man! So simple, yet so effective!
Great lesson! flam-floom-shlempy-doom 4:10. Life changing
There really is a whole life worth of lesson in flam-floom-shlempy-doom :)
Am I the only one thats been dying to see him play that monophonic ride up on the wall. I think it would pair nice with the transition ride
Are you talking about the one all the way to the right of your screen? That's no Monophonic ride. That's a prototype (1 of 2). I have one and Benny has one. It's the closest thing I've ever heard to an old 60's K ride.
@@mikeslessons wow thats awesome, would love to hear that thing. Cheers
That’s some “flata sloom slipie dome” action
Virada TOP, agressiva e suave ao mesmo tempo👏👏🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
you are such a good teacher !!!
Damn! Just stumbled across this and instantly subbed. Amazing energy, amazing drumming and really motivating to get behind my kit and put in the time it takes to learn this fill. Thank you for really exceptional content! Now off to consume the rest of it:)
Beautiful fill. Talking of spice, Gadd did it ALL the time in terms of sneaking things in, and HOW!
Mike, I've been on your channel since 2005, just wanted to take this time to let you know how positive a dude you are, on too of being a fab instructor and of course, a killer drummer! Hope to meet at 21 Drums some day :)
Oh man, have you ever heard that BOMB he snuck into We're In This Love Together by Al Jarreau? Bananas! Thank You for all the kind words my friend.
@@mikeslessons That, and EVERY Paul Simon record, ever. He's my number 1, and as I get older, I understand why He is Gaddfather. There really isn't a quartet like him, Vinnie, Porcaro and Carlos Vega. Vinnie is an 👽, but these FOUR guys, man: pocket, feel, taste, the RIGHT things for a song. All my life, I have had ONE goal: to be a SONG drummer, and you definitely know what I mean. That's also why I'm a HUGE fan of Ash. I HAVE to meet the bunch of you guys. Damn this pandemic!
Great lick. Thanks so much, Mike!!!
Yes,my man! Another great one!
Your energy is so great in these videos. gets me excited to try and study these things you show. I love it!
I have one critic though... It needs more Juneau!
Just amazing!!!
Hey Mike, Thanks for your lessons, I really LOVE your grooves man, I'm learning a lot and sometimes add some of your grooves into my band's songs. It works great ! Thanks again !

Awesome, thank you!
Such a cool fill! 🙌🏻
This is freaky awesome!
Yer awesome. And ya keep good time and have good timing. I was just going through a confidence thing trying to make a video of my own it's not rocket surgery but sometimes we need to hear what we already know. Keep up the good work and thank you.
Awesome. Thanks Mike !!!
What you said in the intro, is me! Lol.
Oooh this is a really cool fill that I wouldn't know how to break down from hearing (or watching) in full speed. Cool video and thank you!
This is tasteful
And the video is very nice too, you got me
Dude, great teacher!
Your teachings are so
entertaining 🥁😅👍🏼
Your a good teacher.
Thanx for your lessons
Hola Mike.
Qué maravilla envolvente es este fill. Abrazo en cuarentena desde Buenos Aires Argentina.
3:07 resonates with me hard! HA SO TRUE.
Love your energy and enthusiasm. New sub.
Thank you Nathan, that means a lot. Now for the big question... did ya practice it? 🙏🍵🙏🍵
Awesome communication, relevant, and inspiring! Like your enthusiasm, too.
Jim Warnock Man, thank you so so much!
Lovely fill. Will try out.
Dude you are an amazing teacher!
Don't stop!
Gianni Badeau Gianni, I really appreciate that man. I promise to not stop teaching if you promise to not stop practicing :)
Great lesson... Not used to leading with my right hand when I start a fill on the snare... So this is helping with that weakness... Love it man!
Eric E Gutierrez Awe man, that’s so great to hear!
Love your feel! You are a monster
My love for this man and his teachings grows with each video. Can't wait to commit this to muscle memory. Pat Boone is outta here baby! Thank you sir.
You have no idea how much I appreciate that Ozzie! Thank you 🙏 🍵🙏🍵
first time watching one of your videos. love the energy! and what a great lesson, thank you :D
me too.... subbed!!
Awe man... thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Great video, I was intrigued by the title and was sold in the first 20 seconds
Edit: Your kit is also extremely nice too
Awe man, thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed the lesson 🙏🙏🙏
You light up my life
nice lick, thanks for sharing.
Nice lesson! I call it compression and expansion :D
Or tension and release.
cramping a lot of strokes and then the release with a few simple ones.
Much like building tension with dissonance and relieving the listener with the resolution in beautiful harmonics.
I know Mike says he's more of an instructor now, but my GOD this man can PLAY.
So sick! man I love this!!!
🙏🙏🍵🍵🍵
Thank you very much for the great lesson.
Mike, this is why I subscribed to your channel: pure beast licks with devilish taste. Keep it up my man.
Are ya trying to make me cry? 🙏🙏🙏
That thing you did at the beginning is something i do when i want to keep better time :D
Waaaoooowww !!!
X'cellent !!!
So much fun !!!

No where near being able to do this yet, but I did go and get that metronome app! Can’t wait to try it out.
