They're coolants conceived to be used only for shows and they're fine to run for a short time, but daily driving those for months leads to this.
Distilled water and biocide is one of the safest fluids to run, and if you want aesthetics use coloured tubing and fittings
I've used distilled water with EK biocide for years and don't have any rust or other gunk build up really. I'm staying away from colored fluids because they just don't seem to be stable over long terms.

Galvanic corrosion: Is a problem.
Manufacturers: Mixing metals? It doesn't matter because you can have more RGB and "Gaming" in the name!
But you are not forced to mix em or use that stupid soap effect liquid thats made for show room computers and not for real use.
But in this case, it was actually safe mix (copper, nickel and brass) with very low differences in anodic index. It must be a coolant fault, because I'm running an EK loop as well for years and never had any major issues with corrosion...
@@PavelSekerka If he used a silver kill coil, then that is where his problem started. You can't mix silver and nickle (or nickle plated copper in this case) as it will lead to galvanic corrosion.
Yep. Silver is on the edge of safety margin (anodic index wise) when mixing with brass and or/copper. But I haven't noticed any Ag kill coil in the loop though...

I built a custom water loop back in dec of 2011. a 360mm rad and a 140mm rad. Cooling an I7-2700k and 2 GTX580 Hydrocopper 2's. I never cleaned the loop, used mostly distilled water. a few months ago I removed the water system from my machine to upgrade video cards and go air cooling. That's why you don't use colored fluids in the first place
Why not just use car antifreeze? It's colored...and it tastes delicious.
Distilled water with biocide and corrosion inhibitor FTW!!! I've been running open loop water cooling on all my pcs for about 10 years. The only time I've seen any build up or corrosion is when I use dyed or UV responsive coolant/aditives. Last flush was over 2 years on distilled and it looked as clean as it did when I filled it. Im not saying that anyone should go 2 years, just that longevity depends on the loop.
Last time I was this early I still had a clean watercooling loop
It all depends on what dye you use if any in your loop. I tore apart a loop that has been together for 8 years and there is no build up whatsoever only a slight discoloring of the tubes. I used pc ice in that loop which is not made anymore. On my main computer I used just distilled water and PT Nuke and there is no problems. If you use heavy dyes you will clog up your system

"Something a bit more reliable"
Ah, air cooling. Much more reliable, only the fan can fail and nothing will ever corrode, leak, or evaporate.
"Here's an AIO"
Oh. 😐
It is significantly more reliable than one of those screwy "display build" fluids that this custom loop had in it before, though.
Until the pump fails without anyone noticing... 😬 - I speak from experience

As long as there is no clogging and the pumps are moving coolant you should be OK, oxidized copper will still conduct heat very well. My system has been running for 12 years with only 2 coolant changes using only "distilled" water and a silver "Kill Coil" to prevent algae growth. No dye or additives of any kind
This video shows, why I prefer air cooling.
Got a Hyper 612 v2 in the workstation. You?(Air cooling is the best reliability wise! Running it passive!)

@@nickairsoft2922 Or use air cooling and don't worry about disassembly at all.
Chetan Naik it’s not even disassembly. Just run the pump full speed and slightly open the drain valve and use a funnel to fill the reservoir at the same rate you are draining it. Doesn’t take 5 minutes
@@nickairsoft2922 But its simply easier not to do so, and there's barely a performance penalty for it.
Haven't even cleaned out my custom loop in well over a year but mine doesn't look that bad. I mean the thing hasn't been cleaned in so long that the reservoir that I filled up to full when I redid the loop is now half way full. Planning on doing an AIO for both CPU and GPU in the future so I don't have to worry about corrosion anymore. Was fun diving into custom water cooling but doing maintenance is a hindrance in my busy life. The last time I redid my loop (tubes were also full of corrosion so everything was cleaned out and redone) took a whole day.
the solution here is to just go air and forget about watercooling
How often, if at all, should one flush out their aio cpu cooler?
This is the dark side of liquid cooling, it's like a nightmare. Sooner or later you must deal with corrosion, leaking and clogging and the liquid system parts are expensive to replace. Just don't skip the maintenance and hope for the best or use an optimal air cooling solution that gives the same results, though without the looks.
IDK man, as long as you stay away from pastel fluids and use quality parts you should be fine. been running my loop for 4-5 years now and haven't had any issues, I do a fluid drain and refill about once a year.
@@Ender240sxS13 I would just stick to closed loops honestly. I've had one in one machine for 9 years and it still isn't overheating. My current PC is on year 5. When running at 99% load on the CPU it still stays around 40-50C.
@@Alte.Kameraden To each their own. Firstly I am running both CPU and GPU heavily over clocked and I run much cooler with the custom loop than i did under an AIO and obviously GPU is much much cooler than with it's stock air cooler. Secondly I much prefer the aesthetics of a custom loop.
Plus I'm the kind of person that enjoys tinkering with things and I look forward to the yearly task of disassembly and cleaning, it's really quite an easy task.
Additionally I have seen far more AIO issues and failures among my friends than I have seen problems with custom loops. I know two other people with custom loops that are also on the 4-5 year mark with out any issue and I know 5 other people running AIOs, two of which have had pump failures. Hardly an indicative sample size I know, but interesting non the less.
@@Ender240sxS13 To be honest, if you're not overclocking at all there is no point in even having an Closed System Water Cooler. If someone is heavily overclocking to a point that a closed system isn't good enough, perhaps they should reconsider the hardware they originally purchased because 'damn' I can only imagine. Though from what I've seen, it seems to be more for the 'cool' factor than practical. Maintenance just doesn't seem to be worth the effort.
@@Alte.Kameraden 🤣 AIOs only perform as good as high end air-coolers, maybe a bit better if you have an AIO with a 360mm rad, sure you can overclock with them, and sure they will keep your system cool enough. I'm not saying you have to do a custom loop, but they will never keep your components as cool as a custom loop will. Again I'm not saying it's for everyone, if you really think the maintenance is such a big deal then you clearly aren't cut out for it. But to say people should stay away from them is pretty ridiculous.

Hey Kyle, I know you said those radiators and the block probably aren't reusable but I've had luck refreshing parts with corrosion and pastel fluid buildup by running the loop with white vinegar in it for a few days. Something about the acid and the heat just makes them nice and shiny again, including the inside of radiators. Consider trying it, you can look inside a radiator with a cheap plumbing endoscope to see how well it came back.
Conclusion: It doesn't matter how expensive and good are your water cooling parts if you're an idiot who doesn't follow the manufacturer's instructions. EK happens to have amazing content on their website or if you don't like to read, at least watch some JayzTwoCents vids.
This is why I only use distilled water mixed with a bit of biocide. No buildup, no growth, no corrosion, changing the water is as easy as a quick rinse and then re-fill
Oh i'm so sooooooooooory Doc! mine is on air!
What did you put in the loop to cause galvanic corrosion? Nickel plated blocks and fittings with a copper/brass radiator should have been fine.

I've put pastel in my loop ONCE and I won't do it again EVER. It was EK-Cryofuel Solid and after the flush (10L of distilled water) all pipes were disgustingly dirty, fittings had stains on threads and GPU block (incidentally form EK) has some reaction with the coolant that had to be opened to clean the stain.

Dr pc the pc doctor
is always politically correct
I strongly recommend reading about distilled/di-ionised water. It is highly corrosive (very acidic) in pure form. However all the additives should make it more pH neutral. However in your case (pun intended) maybe it was still way to acidic? You may be also correct calling it galvanic corrosion, as you have dissimilar metals in the loop :/. Check the pH of your mixed cooling solution as this may solve some mystery. However, I would say "corrosion" you see is due to cavitation... anyway, good job doctor :)
ran a loop with just distilled water and a biocide for more than 6 years... I think I replaced the water maybe once a year, sometimes a bit more. I built a new loop when I upgraded my system. I disassembled the cpu and gpus blocks when I took everything apart just to see how everything went and the parts were flawless. I understand that colored fluid and all that is pretty but I don't think it's worth the price of destroying your parts like that. I reused the same radiators for a new loop with new gpu and cpu block and today, a year later, again with distilled water and liquid utopia this time around, my blocks look brand new (corsair blocks this time around).
Ahem you owe me a new keyboard ... mine shorted out at the 1:00 mark when you said "carried out by highly skilled, trained and extremely good looking professional.", and water shot out my nose onto it. It was a Logiten MX800 Performance. ... hahaha
Simple answer to this: NH-D15
The only air cooler i have seen outperform any of my custom loops and AIO's and its way easier to maintain via compressed air! No disassembly required. Oh and its cheaper than 95% of the water coolers out there EVEN most lower tier water coolers (If it can fit your case)
Basically if you aren't doing any extreme overclocking I don't know why anyone would opt for water cooled. Looks maybe? Not having a big ass heatsink in the box? I use a Noctua D-15 Chromax. Its huge, its ugly, but it performs amazingly.
I put distilled water and 20% Bosch car coolant in a cheap chinese water cooling loop and didn't open it for 5 years, had to open just because the liquid went down a bit. Changed the thermal compound, checked the loop and no sign of corrosion, closed it again and made the same mix, distilled and 20% Bosch car coolant, the same one my Chevrolet Vectra uses, its been 5 years again, no sign of corrosion or liquid loss, I will be changing the thermal compound next week.
The only AIO I've ever had, clogged up in less than a year, custom loop here I come!!!
Kyle: Tells us to clean loop
Also Kyle: "Should not be tried at home" 0:58
My loop has been running for 7 years without maintenance, apart from occasional top up of the res. Just pure distilled water and a silver coil. Additives are just more trouble than they are worth.
I like the fact that a custom cooling loop provides a ton of customization options, I wouldn't want to do it for my build. The biggest reason being that the loop requires a lot of maintenance. You're also looking at spending a chunk of money to replace parts when they go bad. If you want to liquid cool your CPU and not have to put up with the maintenance of a custom loop, I would recommend an AIO cooler. I've been using them for years and haven't had any major issues with them.
I wonder how well that closed loop will do, gonna open it up in a year and check it out? I like custom loops with a drain and fill port to make life easy with quick disconnects and ball valves, good for getting air out too. Or external radiators to get the heat out completely, cool show and fun theme.
I'm glad he put "upgrading" in quotes when talking about the 1080 being replaced with the 2060 super.
Liquid cooling is neat and all, but if your environment is cool, then a regular heat sink and fan does the trick and has for years. The only maintenance I do to my pc’s is the occasional dusting and thermal reapplication after some years of running.
ultimate reliability would be a noctua or be quiet air cooler. i was using aio and my pump died after 6 years so i rediscovered big air coolers lately and forgot how silent they can go.
