  • In Episode 1 of "The Last Of Us," a doctor talks about viral outbreaks and pandemics in the '60s. The main concern isn't bacteria; it's fungi. This fungus, named Ophiocordyceps camponoti-floridani, can control its host like a puppet, with the fungus itself pulling the strings and controlling the host. It's a scary prospect that sets the stage for our story.

From Season 1, Episode 1: "When You're Lost in the Darkness"
20 years after a pandemic has radically changed known civilization, infected humans run wild and survivors are killing each other for food, weapons; whatever they can get their hands on. Joel, a violent survivor, is hired to smuggle a 14-year-old girl, Ellie, out of an oppressive military quarantine zone, but what starts as a small job soon transforms into a brutal journey across the U.S.

Everything except the colour scheme. The whole teal-and-orange look is a modern-movie, post-digital-grading phenomenon. TV broadcasts never looked like this. If anything, it was likelier to be a bit magenta-heavy, but mostly it was always a very neutral/natural colour scheme (whites being #ffffff white), just a bit under-saturated.

Before that you can seperate all talk of a zombie like plague to fiction, even one caused by a fungus with sound science... but throw in the also scientifical fact of global warming and the very real posibility of fungi evolving... suddenly fiction blends in with reality and creates palpable tension and horror. I’m all honesty, this show kinda sucks. There are some things about it that are great but in essence it’s kind of a disappointment.
Also, the episode with that completely revolves around two gay lovers was completely unnecessary to the plot and obviously a way to push a political agenda. I am not judging the show based on that episode yet it was still completely pointless and stupid.

The problem is this was all nonsense. There are dozens of fungi that infect humans right now. The species that cordyceps parasitizes right now are not even remotely 1% infected. If infection was widespread it would affect the survival of those species and that would kill the fungus. That means that when cordyceps first evolved to infect those species it was terrible at it and those species immune systems mostly handled it easily and that has remained the case (this is true for functionally all fatal parasites).

      @le_petit_renard 16 дней назад +1

@@jjones9822the first paragraph I read of your comment and I immediately knew where it was headed and wasn't disappointed lol.
This show isn't perfect, there are a few scenes that I found questionable, but it's far from "sucks", and episode 3 was definitely a well written and well directed episode. It's okay, not everyone is used to seeing gay relationships, but don't undermine the entire show just because you can't stand to see same-sex relationships. That episode, btw, wasn't intended to push the plot, but rather give depth to the story and characters. It's okay, not everyone can understand it...I mean, not everyone can understand the movie Oppenheimer as well and found it boring.
P.S. Bill and Frank are a gay couple in the game it's based on as well, so no, it's not an agenda just because you're afraid to be "converted".

Its just so chilling, and more so given that we've all recently lived through an epidemic of our own. I'd this had released in April 2020... I think people would be making amateur case studies on the subject. Given how pivotal Covid-19 was, we've all moved on from it rather quickly. I would have expected there to be a new wave of lockdown/pandemic related movies out to explore the human condition and how we coped with the world ending, either real or fictional... but no.

@@smittyssnippets1358 It's not impossible, but extremely unlikely.
The fungus has to infect mammals instead of insects, which is a huge leap.
The fungus has to grow much, much larger to infect every part of a human body. That will take a long time during which the fungus has to survive in the body without killing or completely disabling it.
Then the fungus somehow has to control this huge body. Muscles, bigger than hundred of ants, have to move in a coordinated manner to move us around. Fungi are smart, but they need to be a lot smarter to move a human.
And the fungus has to achieve all of this through a series of random mutations that might take millions of years to occur naturally.

To add to what others said, it's also possible to cure and prevent. He says it's not possible and it adds a lot to the scene but that's not true. Some grain processing plants use electron-beam processing to destroy anything organic. It's not everywhere because its expensive, but it wouldn't seem expensive if this started being a problem.

There's also preventatives and cures and it is possible to make them. it's my favorite part of this scene but its untrue as well. Not only medical treatments, but some processing plants for grains and dry bulk(how the fungus spread in the show) they use electron-beam processing. Literally a particle accelerator that shreds anything organic with high energy electrons as the grain passes through on a conveyor. It's not everywhere, but it could be if suddenly we needed it.

The way the two seniors are leaning forward in their seats with blank expressions on their faces….they look zombie-like in that moment.
That whole series of quick cuts to the audience members as he talks about the fungi taking control of billions of them, poisoning their minds and bending them to the will of the fungus, ending with that shot of the seniors…masterfully creepy and eerie 👌

The fungus that infects ants, does travel to the ants brain, where it directs the ant to a particular place, right temp, right humidity, right shade and moisture.
Once there, the ant is directed to just stand,
Where upon the fungus devour it slowly before it reproduce.
Real pictures of this can be seen on the Internet.
Oh, and the fungus in the amozon covers hundreds of square miles, and appears to live as one entity.
