  • How does each accent affect how you perceive my 1) Intelligence 2) Attractiveness and 3) Friendliness? I was asked by a Psychology class to do a vid comparing a British accent to a Californian one using their short script. The study will be conducted scientifically at their university, but comment, share, let me know what You think!

Your Californian accent is so good. It’s not insulting like a lot of imitations are, while staying true to the whimsy.
Your pronunciation is mildly stilted, but we do sound that way when we’re offended or uncomfortable, so that’s how I took your characterization. Nice job :)

Wow, that was amazing! Bang-on perfect Aussie accent - and as an Aussie Linguistics graduate, I was listening super closely! It was also interesting to see how I felt as though I liked or disliked you more with the different accents (my order of preference was the same as your order of delivery - but the level of ‘attractiveness’ of various accents would change depending on each listener’s personal linguistic background). Well done, Amy.

Amy Walker, I’ve been watching a bunch of your videos and your accents are amazing, I’m learning so much! Your Aussie accent is particularly impressive. I’ve watched a few videos of you speaking with an Australian accent and it’s almost perfect. Just one small note - at ~0:59 on this video when you say ‘environment’ it has a hint of American English in it. We wouldn’t have the ‘n’ in ‘onm’ so pronounced so it sounds like you’re saying ‘en-vine-ment ’ but we say ‘en-vire-ment’

  • @MultiBassbuster

It’s hilarious that most comments are on the Australian accent (which is fantastic), but on the British & California samples, I’d say Intelligence and Attractiveness go to former, and Friendliness slightly to the latter, as the Brit is a little more intimidating. Keep the videos coming! (Btw, could you do one on a Maine accent, as it’s very rare to hear a good impersonation of it?)

Hello Amy, I love your videos! My thoughts are as follows: it's difficult-because both are you, both are fabulous. But, here goes: 1) Intelligence-no difference 2) Attractiveness-I find the British accent that you chose to be softer. The American sounds are a bit harsh. For example, the "r" in "Walker" and vowels such as the "a" in "graduate", the "ow" in "town" and the "o" in "dog", grate a little in the US version. 3) Friendliness-I prefer this British accent for the same reasons. I find a softer approach to speech more inviting. Merci! Anna

I think, like many people I have also discussed this with, that the RP British accent definitely rates higher for sounding more intelligent. As you speak it, it sounds friendly, but I think most of us would perceive the California accent as friendlier. Being from South Carolina -- the Upstate region which is quite rhotic (hard "r"s) , as opposed to the coastal accent which is non-rhotic with soft "ah's" -- I can tell you that many people from other regions perceive Southern rhotic-speakers especially as though they were quite unintelligent. Though certainly there are some who are, it's no more than in any other accent category. And though I get why, it has always been a very unfair comparison. I love your work, Amy, and your ability to switich from one authentic accent to another so fluidly is stunning! Thanks for sharing your talent! BTW -- do you ever have trouble staying in your own accent?

  • @henryl955

The second I hear G of the Day I knew you’re doing the Aussie accent.
Question: to my knowledge I learnt that for American accents the “generic” ones anyways tend to relax their dialect especially LA in the west coast. Unlike how some British accents does it as if they’re posh. Am I sort of right?

  • @davidmccormack99
    @davidmccormack99 4 года назад +5

Of the two accents you do at the end (not the full-on Aussie intro), the first one is confusing me. Most of the comments here seem to think it was an RP English accent. If it was, there were a few words which had a decidedly Australian twang. The first was the surname “Walker” which had a more open-mouthed second syllable like an Aussie would say. Then there was “home town” in which both words, to me ear at least, had diphthongs tending in the Antipodean direction. Lastly there was “dog” which didn’t sound RP English to me. It sounded like the accent you were doing was of a middle class Home Counties girl who moved to Australia at maybe 13-14 years of age and went to a posh school in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs.

    • @ArdinVincent

I have nothing intelligent to add to this but just wanted to say that I love love love that fact that whenever you do a 'standard' British accent you totally nail my own accent- which I have never been able to understand or pin down myself. It's an English accent, but it's not RP but it's nearly RP. It's a tiny bit estuary, but not that either. A bit East Anglian maybe? People can never place my accent... It's definitely not the accent of my home town...I guess it's just generic, and I never seem to hear it in films or on TV, but Amy, I do hear it when you do your standard British accent, so, thank you!

Your Aussie accent is spookily good. It's one that non-Aussies always seem to struggle with, I suspect because of a lack of exposure. The best non-Aussies I've heard do the accent are usually Brits who grew up watching Aussie soaps on UK TV. :)
One note, though: the one flaw I heard was "environment", and I know exactly why. Your brain is saying "non-rhotic, remember to do it non-rhotic" so when you hit an R between two vowels, which Aussies _do_ vocalise, you skipped over it. 100% understandable mistake in an otherwise near-perfect Aussie accent.

Very good on all, Ms Walker. Not many can get the traditional Aust as close. Its dying out, as the younger gens pick up other forms, from multi-media and the influx of immigration. I noted the higher intonation at the sentence end (typical newer Aus). The UK RP, spot on (parse for pass). :)

Personally i feel that the first accent portrays a smart, educated and sophisticated woman, friendly and open minded, but also very .....let's say "aware" of herself in terms of how she wants to be percieved by others. If that makes any sense to you 😄 The second accents portrays (imho) a friendly, outgoing woman who is more careless or free spirited, if you will. Though i do not imagine her as less educated, she appears to me as if it doesn't matter to her if she is seen as intelligent or not. As for attractiveness i have two different types of women in mind when i hear the accents and personally i'd favour the first one a bit more.

Yes, they do, and it drives me bananas! Can anyone say Internet, or is it always Innernet? How about den'l and men'l for dental and mental? That lack of t in the middle of words is such a downer. WHY can't the Yankees teach their children how to speak? This leaving out the "t" sound, it drives me up a creek!

@@erpollock There are examples of elision in all sorts of accents that most people do unconsciously. We'll have to find the ones in yours too, then tease you about it! It'll be fair then. :)

Any answers we give are necessarily coloured by previous exposure to those national accents. As an Aussie, it's hardly surprising I'd find the Australian accent nicer than the others and I wouldn't infer anything about intelligence from any of them.
Hollywood has often used Aussie actors to play British characters, going way back to the days of Errol Flynn. Maybe they just liked the look of them, but sometimes the softer accent was useful too.
