    I think a really interesting video idea for someone as talented as yourself might be to take video clips from your followers and break down their accents, figure out what influences they have in their voice.
    missed this live but good to see peoples thoughts on your previous vid.

      I love audiobooks but the narration is everything. I will “return” a library audiobook within a few minutes if…the narration is going to be a problem. Agree you should do. Mesmerized by your videos, am an American not an actor, love sharing these with my friend who is a nonnative English speaker. I notice people often refer to that Minnesota/Wisconsin accent as midwestern. Grew up in Iowa and Missouri, didn’t have that quality but can’t remember what it sounds like :) I know I still struggle not to put an r in wash, but mine now is probably California accent otherwise. Thanks, love your channel.

    If you Google the phrase "how accents affect our attractiveness" you will find a few interesting articles on this subject. I have a fun idea for a video, but I think you would do the video better than I would. Have an eclectic group of people speak various accents, while a panel of people rates them on attractiveness. However, the catch is that the people speaking will be hidden, so the panel will only be able to rate their accents based on their voices! When I was studying psychology and mathematics in college, one of my part-time jobs was a telemarketing position. I remember how amazing it was that I could not judge what a person looked like based on that person's voice. It was really interesting.

    As a British person your American accent sounds like an ‘intelligent well educated american’ to me. Of course that’s a very generalised comment but you can tell what is considered a more ‘posh’ American accent and a slightly more ‘common’ American accent.
    I have a southern uk accent which is basically the British accent you did, however there are a mix of different levels of ‘poshness’ within the south here, is it the same for American accents?

      Sarah yes it is, though we have a stereotype for each accent. Both positive and negative. For example where I am from we see Louisiana and Utah and Minnesota accents as less intelligent, but they are fun and friendly.

    • @aphr0d
      @aphr0d 5 лет назад +14

      Sarah poshness is generally associated with class. Americans don’t really have very different accents based on class. Sometimes certain accents may seem more or less educated. It really depends. It’s definitely not as present (or really even cared about) in the culture as it is with the UK.

    Hi Amy! Its been a while since I check in on you and your channel! I love love love what you do because I have always been interested in these things! I watched the Story of English when I was a teenager and got the BBC book that came out way back with the documentary series. Have you seen that? Just curious! THere was a segment if I recal correctly after so many years about an experiment where they had children with a variety of English accents reading the same script and then they were basically judged on intelligence via their accent. The RP or posh accent always was pegged as the most intelligent even though the content was identical to the little kids with a regional accent. Ahhh that made an impression on me. So unfair! And yet there is an aesthetic at work in all things! Combined with cultural programming we are basically taught to think one thing is 'better" no?
    I am from Florida with one English (Cheshire) and one American (Tennessee) parent. I studied French intensively in secondary school after a childhood spent in Fla. and Puerto Rico. My husband is of Jamaican origin but sounds American and we met in university in Scotland where he studied Arabic! Its pretty fun swimming in all this linguistic variety. Scottish is our favourite to try and emulate!!! Ha ha!
    And by the way your Southern is just PRECIOUS!!!!! Uhhhh I love it!!! I live in Washington DC for the last 12 yrs also hearing that southern is just luscious. The Midwest one is hysterical. It always takes me a sec when I meet someone from the midwest. Ha ha!
    Dirty south!! Atlanta! Georgia?? How about Black Englishes - there are lots no?
    I am surrounded by Aussies right now so LOVING learning so many fabulous expressions! Like "rock up" and "your're a legend" etc.
    OK thanks for being a kindred spirit! Come see us In Washington DC anytime! Aimee xo
