  • Napoleon: Total War 1vs1: Foot vs Young Guard
    Nation: Great Britain vs France
    AI Strength: normal
Foot are Great Britain's standard line infantry: ubiquitously available from even basic cantonments and, by British standards, cheap. They are the best standard line infantry among all factions, outclassing their counterparts in nearly every category (Russian Musketeers have better charging and melee skills but are much worse in most other categories) and even beating out most unique line infantry. Foot are so good that they are only slightly inferior to French Young Guard, who themselves are elite infantry. As with all line infantry, Foot are numerous, possess good morale, and are resistant to morale shocks, making them suitable for holding the line of battle. They can form squares to fend off enemy cavalry, but are vulnerable to longer-ranged skirmishers and light infantry, artillery fire, and being attacked from the flanks or rear. One small disadvantage of Foot is that they benefit from experience gains from higher tier military buildings than other line infantry. French Fusiliers of Line and Prussian Musketeers are recruited with two chevrons of experience with Drill Schools, while Foot have to wait till tier-4 Military Academies are built. The difference is small, however, and the British regain their advantage in the late game.
The Young Guard are elite troops in the French unit roster, boasting superb skills in every category. While they are inferior statistically to the Old Guard and the Guard Seamen as well as the elite infantry of other factions, they are still heads and shoulders above most other line infantry, and they have the advantage of having a relatively generous regiment cap at 8 units, making them a much larger presence in the wars against the Coalition than their superior counterparts. Despite their (relatively) unremarkable stats, Young Guard inspire nearby units, making them a very valuable addition to the line of battle. In the Campaigns of the Coalition, France begins the campaign with one regiment of Young Guard at its capital. This unit is absent in the Napoleon's Campaigns version, however. In Peninsular Campaign, The Young Guard is available for French forces in The Peninsular Campaign too. They are the best line infantry available to France in the Peninsular Campaign, and the only infantry units in the French unit roster that can inspire nearby troops. Compared to the British, however, they suffer: the British have nearly the full roster of elite infantry available to them in the Peninsular Campaign, and without the Old Guard, the Young Guard fight an uphill battle against their equivalents.

2:10 "arrêtez de brailler comme une femelette, on meurt en silence" : "Stop crying like a pussy, we die quietly."
Yeah, the lines were just gold back then.

Mind installing a sound pack for napoleon or empire (recommend general Andy’s musket sound mod) the vanilla musket sounds soo bad after playing with mods for so long

Pretty much unhistorical. The Young Guard would advance in column ("The French, particularly, have never been able
to march steadily in deployed lines." - General Jomini). If stationary, they would rarely be drawn up in three lines (always 2 after 1813). There would normally be a swarm of skirmishers. The British line regiment, usually in two lines not three, would remain silent, probably in a fold of ground, and perhaps lie down to minimise casualties from artillery. They would probably fire just one volley and then charge with the bayonet. Alternatively they would fire by platoons from the right or left. If under pressure, one rank would fire while the other retired through them, reloading as it did so. The drums and fifes would be just behind the lines, along with the two regimental standards (escorted by a small defence party), not in the front line.

Indeed but this is a demo of firepower and base morale, nothing more. The Young Guard of course were the best recruits headhunted from line regiments and made into "super recruit" battalions, but they were still recruits, just highly motivated ones.
The game formation dimensions don't allow the British to form into two man deep lines, just a programming limitation I would think, not unless you have much smaller British unit size. That wouldn't end well....
Games like this have to compromise on details. Having regimental colours for example. What would be the point? in reality these "armies" are tiny so what would you suggest the programmers did there? Have two flags for every unit? Have a specific unit with two flags, musicians and body guards that add next to zero for the battle game play?
A bit of realism ground has to be given to make a game playable. For example , it should actually take 50 plus campaign turns to build a first rate of the line ship but who's going to play that? The British army regiments only had two battalions and one of those stayed at home. Should the player be forced to do likewise? And so on....
Hardcore wargamers are never going to be happy with a game that can be sold in quantity, but then they'll play a table top wargame with piles of dice, thick book of rules and where 4 painted figures with physical proportions of garden gnomes "represent" hundreds of men. That's realism apparently.
