It's remarkable just how faithful the Saturn port of Sega Rally is compared to the arcade original. Even more so when you consider how much more powerful the Model 2 arcade board was over the Saturn's internal hardware. I played this game to death on Saturn. Easily one of the most playable home console racers to this day. The handling of the cars was just perfect. The Saturn port remains the best home version of Sega Rally for me.

Same here brow ... I bought the Saturn because of the Sega arcades , I was nuts for them .. and when it came bundled with a demo disc which had the second track to play time attack as u want , I just got nuts about it! A few months latter I bought the full version and loved it even more, me and my dad plays it to death this game! What a sound track ! The handling ... everything in this game is just great! What amazes me about this port is that despite the limitations of the Saturn, nothing is really missing here. (OK transparency on the windows, but that's minor)
The resolution is lower and it runs at a locked 30fps but other than that this is a damn fine port. They even added textures to some things that the arcade is missing. Like the flags lining the start line. The draw distance is pretty close to what the arcade was too. Close enough to not be all that noticeable really. The road textures take a hit, but obviously some concessions had to be made here.
A lot of love was put into this and it really shows.

While there's a massive power gap between Model 2 (the most powerful gaming hardware at the time) and Sega Saturn hardware. Virtua Fighter 2 and Sega Rally were great ports. It goes without saying.
Model boards (doesn't matter which one) were top of the line, most expensive and most advanced hardware of their time. Boards that were, we could say... especially custom-crafted for high end arcade experiences.
They were a dream back then, and they still are.
Because some of their games haven't got a decent port yet, and probably never will.
Not to mention the complex logistics and excessive amount of money you needed to buy one arcade machine back then, and even more so now.
    All that said...
Sega Saturn's Sega Rally was and still is OUTSTANDING. Feels like the arcade, and to my 12 year old self... it looked just like the arcade, heck anything on the Sega Saturn was a dream come true, even some sub-par ports like the first Virtua Fighter or the original blocky-no-field-of-view Daytona's port.
Also the 30 fps downgrade, low res textures and grainy graphics of Saturn's Sega Rally were just circumstancial and a product of their time as a game from the very first years of an extremely complicated hardware to program for. I'm pretty sure that with an extended time of development they would achieved 60fps.

M1XART a shame. The DC port of sega rally 2 was rushed to the market. Dreamcast can receive a much better port if it wasn't rushed to the launch

Christian Palmer so true. The same happened with Tomb Raiders 4 and 5 on DC with terrible framerates, bad graphics for a 128-bit console and long loading times...

The differences are noticeable. Look at the Skybox on the Saturn version. It’s a straight up pre rendered image that just sort of floats in the background. The pop in is definitely noticeable. The poly count is noticeably reduced and the frame rate cut in half.
But with all that said, it holds up surprisingly well. Considering the model 2 was so far ahead of everything at that time and the Saturn was drastically underpowered by comparison, it’s still a damn good port job that captures the game completely with a few cut backs.
The frame rate is solid and rarely seems to dip unlike the early Daytona USA port. The sense of speed is still there. The handling is still there. The pop in is drastically improved over the early Daytona USA port.
AM2 really did get to know the Saturn hardware better than anyone else and I think they consistently got the best results out of it.

Sega Rally in the arcade was a revelation almost on the level of Daytona USA for me. In some ways, I liked Sega Rally better because the handling was more realistic and easier to master. The power sliding just felt right, unlike a lot of arcade racers which made a habit of turning cars to ridiculous angles.
The Saturn version is a very good port. That said, this port goes to show that the promise of arcade-quality graphics wasn't quite there, at least when comparing Model 2 games to Saturn conversions. It's a little odd that the Saturn architecture strayed so far from Sega's arcade hardware at the time, although the Model stuff was really expensive and not likely to have translated to a home console easily at anything close to a reasonable price. Games like Virtua Fighter 2 got impressively close, but Sega Rally is just so smooth, sharp, and fast. The Saturn port gets amazingly close, but is still a little rough. Having the choice today, since the Saturn version doesn't really add anything to the arcade game, I'll play the Model 2 version every time. But for 1995, the Saturn port was a great game to have and play. It's really impressive when you think about how close they managed to get it that early on in the console's life. WAY better than the Daytona USA port.

Other than resolution and draw distance, this is as close to an arcade perfect port that I've seen on older consoles. This is way better than Daytona USA's console port.

I played the saturn version over and over, but the arcade with 4 times the resolution, double the framerate, filtered textures, transparencies, better draw distance, higher polygon models with round courves, perspective correct texture mapping and analog controls is absolutely beautiful!
Saturns music is much better, tho.

It took an original Xbox to convert this game properly.
Not a Sega Dreamcast, which came close, but still couldn't show it in full force.
I know this cause of the arcade game Killer Instinct, which was released in the same time period as Sega Rally Championship.
I had a SNES in that time, and although the gameplay was converted 1 on 1, it didn't came close near the arcade quality, with its semi-3d arena's.
We got a 1 on 1 conversion of Killer Instinct on the original X box.
So my guess is only an Xbox could recreate Sega Rally's Championship original.
The Dreamcast had a port of SRC, but it felt like a spin off, probably cause they couldn't port it 1 on 1.
The X Box was the first console that could play all these arcade games 1 on 1. 🙂😉
