      @ironmike southern but there are less colours on the saturn too.
      you can tell in the fmv. the saturn fmv has some compression artifacts which look like jaggies in the video. they are not dramatic but they are there and the psx video is smooth.

      Nitpicking you say? I'll give you nitpicking
      PlayStation looks stretched compared to the Saturn
      Saturn has no darker lighting used to hide pop-up
      PlayStation has polygon bending (ofc)
      Saturn seems to drop frames more often (both do though, notably in the tunnels)
      PlayStation seems to run slower overall
      Saturn has dithered shadows

    PS1 has better FMVs but apparently Saturn has more cutscenes. More importantly: once in-game (4:43) the PS1 version has bad aspect ratio, the graphics look all wrong, stretched like a SNES game. Does this game runs in the PS1 low resolution mode? On the other hand the PS1 version has real transparency for the car shadow and more solid 3D. The sound is better on Saturn, the sound fx stand out more.

      Interesting observation seeing how the Saturn has primitive occlusion culling for subpixel rendering. This is most noticable at 4:47 when the large buildings suddenly appear immediately on screen whereas the PlayStation gradually (smoothly) fades them in.

    No Saturn o Jogo tem umas falhas
    gráfica q aparece na sombra do carro no PlayStation o carro fica com os gráficos tremendo o mais interessante é que a sombra do carro na versão do sega Saturn está transparente e não toda preta solida
    isso é um tapa na cara de quem fala que o Saturn não faz transparência
    pode até ter dificuldade para gerar transparência mas programando de forma certa parece que era possível fazer transparência no console Sega Saturn.

    • @bizarroeddie1
      @bizarroeddie1 7 месяцев назад

      O problema do Saturn é o VDP1 fazer transparência sobre algo gerado pelo VDP2.
      No caso, polígono sobre polígono ele faz transparência tranquilo, mas deixa de ser transparente a partir do momento que a transparência é sobre o fundo do cenário ou sobre um plano gerado pelo VDP2.
      Pandemonium é o exemplo prático disso. Já Sonic R a sombra é em areia porque apesar de o chão na maioria das vezes ser gerado pelo VDP1, de vez em nunca se percorrem trechos gerados pelo VDP2, e pra não ter a sobra mudando pra preto do nada fizeram assim.

    My personal comparison:
    FMV Cutscenes: I think PS1's ones are better than Saturn's ones. PS1 has more colours on screen, a better framerate and it looks less pixelated. The cutscenes on Saturn look really compressed, with less colours on screen and a lower framerate.
    Menus: I have nothing to say. Both versions had the same menus with no difference between them (minus some minor colour and text changes).
    Gameplay: This part shows a bit of contrast. Both versions run at 30FPS, with light downs at certain points. PS1 has a more stable framerate but the controls on Saturn had a better input in my opinion. The sense of speed is better on Saturn, while drifting and turning feels more natural on PS1, in Saturn there is more information on screen during a race, as well as a way more dense traffic, while in PS1 there is slightly less traffic and more opponents.
    Graphics: A bit of contrast as well. Car models look FAR better on PS1, both player and traffic vehicles. The backgrounds and highway elements look more colourful and detailed in Saturn.
    Sound: Both versions are equal, they feature the same music and SFX.

    Playstation has less pop in, no dithering on the shadows. Proper transparency effects the Saturn lacks. The Saturn to my eye, looks to be running slightly higher resolution. It also appears to me Playstation is pushing more colours, wider palette. In lit tunnels with how flat and one coloured the road looks on Saturn. Saturn's road textures and various textures may have more colour compression or just less colours. Saturn has better background sprite scrolling. Either seems fine but this game is a little primitive in general for PlayStation, It is really a Saturn game ported to PSX. Dedicated PSX racers by this time looked quite a lot better. E.G Rage Racer came out before this title, and it's another world in terms of visuals, blows this away

Do some pausing on the Car selection and you can see the wheels looking really rough on saturn and textures just aren't as clean as the playstation as well, and everything thing just looks a little duller on saturn. Both versions are more or less identical, differences are minor quibbling. PSX has a slightly longer draw distance and shadow effect to hide polygon pop-up, but its screen image is strangely squashed. The Saturn version has the polygon pop-up, but it's minor and in keeping with the era, and its graphics engine doesn't have any wobbling or glitching. God Bless Playstation, but that system couldn't draw a straight line to save its life.
    Overall, I'd be tempted to give a slight edge to Saturn, but that's mostly out of pity. There are very few times where Sega beat Sony in the polygon contest. And once Gran Turismo and Ridge Racer 4 dropped, PSX pulled away for good and Saturn was left choking on the fumes. For most players, both versions appear to be the same experience and everyone should have a fun time.

    The Saturn version looks smoother...but the highway looks like a river in some areas. The PS version has better texture mapping and lighting effects. I give the slight edge to the PS version.

    • @alexmcc-art7768
      @alexmcc-art7768 5 лет назад +3

      "better texture mapping"
      sure, better textures, but not mapping. Look at the PSX version at 4:58 (the side of the bus, helps to pause the video) and compare to the Saturn version at 5:26 and you'll see that the mapping on the Saturn is far superior. This is down to the way the two systems handle polygons, Saturn draws them as quads and PSX drew them as tris. This is the cause of the nasty texture distortion the PSX suffered, and why you don't see it on Saturn.

    saturn sadly no ..most of the games on the saturn on 3d lacks some are awful mess..on 2d department the saturn is a little overrated also .did had advantages on some 2d games with the extra ram cart ..other than that .the ps1 was capable of doing 2d games well

    Saturn did better in japan for a reason. More in house releases that knew the hardware well. Apparently there were a lot of mistranslations and devs couldn't figure out a lot of important points. I think it isnt so much that the hardware was hard to work with, its more that they really had no usable reference.

    I don't know could it just be me or does the Saturn look a little bit and perform a little bit better. If you look closely you can even tell that the game plays a little bit wider. Look at the screens. The Saturn vehicle looks a slight bit smaller but wider. Which means the screen itself is wider . look at the PlayStation the car is a little bit fatter. And less view area around the vehicle. Plus I don't know why it looks more brighter maybe even better on Saturn. And don't give me that about dithering I'll take dither over transparency beard but to be honest look at the transparency underneath the vehicle? It's not even really transparent if you look closely it's still dithering it's just a little bit more detailed in the detering. It's not even really transparent.

    I love the Saturn but if I'm being 100% unbiased, PS1 wins. The difference is so slight though I personally wouldn't care either way if I had to play one or the other. Chose PS1 due to not as much popup and shading looks a teensy bit better to me.

    Psx has better video quality but doesn't have the extra footage. The saturn wins on music quality though. I think you wanted to have a smoother graphical experience like how there is a smooth option on the ps2 for psx games.
