Fitting Gowesty 2wd lift springs to a VW T25/T3/Vanagon

- These days people are using their T25/T3 vans for travel rather than sitting in a field at a VW show doing not very much at all. In the past lowering vans was a trend that hung around for a while but with limited ground clearance these vans were useless for anyone looking for adventure. At CVC we have been watching what people have been doing in the USA for quite a while and last year we became the UK and EU importer and distributor for Gowesty in America. As a result we have been selling lots of Gowesty lift springs for the T25/T3 van and as we are the only people selling these springs in the UK and Europe we figured it was about time we filmed how to fit them yourself for when you buy a set.

I’ve got that same spring compressor- it’s gold - makes strut and spring jobs much easier. Stretching the brake line like that not so good. And using the factory jack without jack stands? Suggest taking caliper off and hanging it.

For the rear springs, I had to drop the CV joint at the engine to get mine in place. The angle was too steep and my spring compressor wouldn't fit in the space. I also had to use a floor jack to compress the spring to put the shock back in place. My bottle jack was too tall.

Thanks for the helpful walkthrough. Really appreciated it, all these years later since the original post. Just did the job over the last day and now I think I've made an error. Resting my whole front end on jack stands, both front wheels are off, new shocks and springs in place, but with the camber, can't seem to figure how to put the wheels back on. When I jack up under the LCA, it wants to take pressure off my other stands. Any advice? I've got two 6-Ton jack stands, one 3-Ton floor jack, and the stock vanagon scissor jack. Cheers!

I reckon a through inspection of the rubber brake hoses are in order. If not replacement; given the conditions at 5:57, and age.

As a newbie to this T25 thing, can I ask what size of wheels you have put onto this red camper which is in the video?
Charles Finnie Hi Charles. The wheels are 15" Mefros, they are actually German caravan or trailer wheels but they are very strong. We used to use the 15" wheels from a Mercedes but we found them a bit soft. The tyres are 215/75/15 BF Goodrich all terrain's, They are a very good tyre that is rated for the van. You should get around 40,000 miles out of a new set.

Love your videos, I'm a DIYer and I use them to maintain my own VW Westy. Love the springs, but my biggest question is where do you get the camper top? Never seen one like it before.
floydiod Its a beauty hey Floydiod. I couldn't resist getting Angelo to pop the roof up at the end. The conversion is unknown but Reimo did a very similer one in the 80's. It is the best of both worlds.
Would it be possible to list the mm sizes of Sockets needed to do this job? My current set only goes to 17mm so I need to know what else I'll need. Thanks!
Getting ready to put the springs on the front of my van. I have a cheap pair of compressors that scare me though haha. What brand makes the ones you are using in this video? Great video by the way, I've been looking for some help for a while, and this did the trick in showing me!

A small Info, is the van running with a LSD or diff lock? or just managing with a stock GB.
+narendravw Thanks for the kind words. The van has a LSD. It was fitted a while back in the vans history and we found it completely by accident. What a result!

One more of your experience Info needed, I'm fitting a German LSD for my T3..How does it fare, in comparison with USA's Pelican LSD?
the suspension system on these vans are so small compaired to my 4runner, it must be tough though to handle all the weight.

The rear is the same so real easy, the fronts are a little more involved.

Thanks a lot for the exceptional Video, I have two questions to lift my Westfalia T25 (I wish it will look like a Syncro...dream):
1 - What size of wheels did you used to use before? (I read down here that the new ones are 215/75/15) (I am using 195 R14 in my Westy T25 rigth now)
2 - Did you masure how many inches did it lift?
3 - How about Rim 16? What do you think?
4 - What was the hight of the new Shocks/Springs again?

Great video! What was the purpose of removing the 11mm drum bolts? I'm about to tackle this on my van, just curious.
I was wondering the same thing. It was mentioned very briefly with zero details
You will find that the 14” rims won’t hit the 11mm bolts but the larger 16” rims will and will not sit flush against the drum if they are not removed
great video! 5 years later i know but, did you have to changes your CV's in the front? or the stock one is ok? saw somewhere that we may need to install front 944 CV's.. thanks!
This is a 2wd van.
Yes, the CV's in the rear will eventually need to be changed. The stock ones don't allow as much angle flex as the 944's do so once you add lift springs the CV's can start to wear out within a year...so I've been told. Also heard you can wait until they start making noise before worrying about replacing them.
How does the van handle in corners after the lift? Did you notice any more body roll compared to the -30mm you had on previously? Thanks for the nice vid!

Just curious about the two bolts "holding he brake drum on." Why take them off? What is holding the brake drum now? Does that have to more with the oversize wheels rather than the springs?
Hi,
Yes that is for the wheel size. When you put the wheel back the wheel itself pushes against the drum and stops that from falling off of course. I am not quite sure why that bolt is on there anyway.. Maybe during the factory assembly it was used as to get the drum off without the bolt on a used van can be quite a job sometimes.

Probably a little late for a reply but I just bought 215/70R16 for my new 16" wheels from GoWesty. They are slightly wider than stock (7.5")
spare wheel under sill panel for safety ;)
I've never seen a brake hose stretched like that before, you might want to remove the caliper next time lol

Do These parts come with any test cirtificate or an operating licence?In Germany it is hardly restricted and regulated what is allowed to change on your vehicle and what not but i'd like to put These on my 2wd as well. What was the hight of the new Shocks/Springs again?Regards

No TUV unfortunately but we do sell quite a few of them to Germany. There must be some way around it I guess.

what's the largest tires you can run on a stock height 2wd van with 16" rims?
215/60R16 maybe? You lose a lot of side wall tire height if you don't lift 1.5"

Could have really done without the excessively long "intro" and excessively long "exit" of the video. Also this is more of a basic overview not an in depth video. Handling coil springs in the wrong way can kill you. Do not attempt this repair/upgrade without reading and or watching a more in depth explanation.
