    Very cool! My parents had a blue Vanagon in the early 80's. We spent a summer traveling around the western US in it. A bunch of states, 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 big dogs. Popping the top like we were sleeping in a tent in the woods. Fun times.

    Good your man is a mechanic. Mine is a 1990. Love it. Make sure he flushes the cooling system as it is extremely important in these babies. (First thing my guru VW mechanic had us do-and bleeds the system properly) You’re going to love it! Following.

    • @mattofstie9298
      @mattofstie9298 4 года назад +2

      Yes! Thanks for the tip. I've been reading about the cooling system being an Achilles heel in these things and having problems with corrosion on the heads. Less than two years ago the engine was rebuilt and new heads installed. All the coolant lines were also changed and updated to the GoWesty lines. It obviously got fresh coolant at the time so we at least have a good starting point

    My girlfriend and I just got an ‘85 vanagon camper ourselves, manual 4 speed. She is just learning in it and it’s going better than expected. The gears can be hard to find, but the clutch is very forgiving! We put an aftermarket stove, sink, and fridge in ours. Now we need a freezer for the longer trips, and maybe more storage

    • @mattofstie9298
      @mattofstie9298 4 года назад

      Awesome, sounds like you have a pretty sweet setup! I also found the clutch quite easy to work in the few manual Westys that I've driven. But finding gears was like moving the shifter through a bowl of Jello. Though I'm sure it would become easier with a bit of practice.

    It looks like it had a respray (the hinge of the sliding door has been painted), but it looks good inside. the fridge is almost always repairable, don't replace it, it will kill the original look of the interior.
    It works on 12V only when the motor is running. on gas it might need a cleanup. So take it out and clean the burner. While it's out, turn it upside down for a night.

    Our fridge works perfectly on propane. The trick is to get it serviced (cleaned). Sometimes put a vacuum down the vent to clean it out. Then we use a camera rocket blower on the lower site hole to get enough air into the fire box. Theyre tricky little buggers but once you get the hang of it, theyre awesome.

    • @mattofstie9298
      @mattofstie9298 4 года назад +1

      Yes you're right about the pilot light for the fridge, but we couldn't manage to get it lit. We read the original manual and online forms to make sure we were following all the steps correctly and spent a long time trying over and over. Apparently it's not uncommon and they can be quite difficult to get working if they haven't been used on propane for a long time.

    I am very glad that you do enjoy driving the van. I hope you get a chance to listen to some good mix tapes from 1987! 🎸🥁
    Since the seats are right above the front axle, road noise will be a problem. Perhaps a rubber shim at the seat mounts, spray-on rubber undercoating in the wheel wells, or sound deadening film under the floor mat? Sound deadening is expensive and a chore to put in, but it is impressively effective. Somewhere I have a video of the stages of improvement when I upgraded my previous car...

    Had a 72 type 2 camper, always wanted a vanagon model. Just have to convince my wife to let us buy one. 😆

    Enjoy the Van, love mine though a bit older and custom they are a lot of fun. I bet that fridge works fine. Mine is an 82 and my fridge works great. Follow the instructions, I bet it works fine.
