If you read the book, you get that whole story- he said that he had a big surprise for her and then he took her on an outing, then ran away leaving a note saying he was leaving
not to be a put down or anything but this song helps me especially when I sing it. I have problems with depression and cutting and I an relate to this even if its about a different thing completely because I thought my life would be "So different from this hell im living" (I thought it would be better) And "there was a time, then it all went wrong" (When I started cutting) and also "and life worth living" (Sometimes I think about how it would be without me) Also "I dreamed that god would be forgiving... But I was young and unafraid" ... "But the tigers come at night." (That's my 'thoughts')... not to be put down. I just had to say this song helps me...
Same here. I have depression and honestly I can relate totally to the song. The story behind I can't but the song yes. I had such big dreams only years ago and now....there is no hope. I can relate to having a dream and a sense of hope but all the sudden having taken away and see the dark side and only the dark side of this world. I saw this cover of two young girls singing this song (they were 16 and 20). They said that they should sing this song because "they don't understand" and "they are too young" but I'm only a teen still and I can relate. Heck why do we have to go through the exact same things in life to relate or understand something. I can feel the power, emotions, and meaning of the story and song. None of the singers of the song can "relate" really because I doubt they had to go through what the character went through. Right?
I can relate to you in so many ways. Just remember you aren't alone. There are so many of us just like you, but we are here for each other. And just remember, God is on our side. He is always there. Everything will be okay. I promise.
I only have a voice for musicals... I sing a modern song and I sound terrible, but I sing classics like this and I bring my fam to tears.. Musicals should never die... So much love, Les Miserables's....
If you FEEL her pain, the words with your tears/heart you'll understand the meaning in this song. Sorrow and regrets are a part of life but hopefully it's lessons learned that you may move on and live your dreams of happiness. This truly a very powerful song even if it is sad to the listener. Peace!
@@jacobprater4578 from an acting perspective, yes. from a technical perspective she did not nail it at all and definitely did a lot of damage to her voice doing that. It's very damaging to cry while singing, it coats your vocal chords in mucus, which makes it much much harder to sing safely and produce a good sound. She performed the song much better when she wasn't crying
I love this song so much, and I spend so much time working on my voice literally so I could sing this and Defying Gravity. They are both in my comfortable range now, which really goes to show that practice, dedication, hard work, and a TON of honey can really make your dreams come true.
It's a testament to how powerful this song is that someone like me who stops crying when listening to a song after a few times of hearing it still cries.
When you come here cause you have literally a few hours to learn this whole song for your school audition and just found it was tomorrow!!! Pray for me
My dream was to have a loving relationship with my father, but at age 16 he left me emotionally, and admitted that he did not love me. I will be singing this song soon, and I will dedicate it to my dad. He turned my dreams to shame, and he was gone when Autumn came.
There was a time when men were kind When their voices were soft And their words inviting There was a time when love was blind And the world was a song And the song was exciting There was a time Then it all went wrong I dreamed a dream in times gone by When hope was high and life worth living I dreamed, that love would never die I dreamed that God would be forgiving Then I was young and unafraid And dreams were made and used and wasted There was no ransom to be paid No song unsung, no wine untasted But the tigers come at night With their voices soft as thunder As they tear your hope apart As they turn your dream to shame He slept a summer by my side He filled my days with endless wonder He took my childhood in his stride But he was gone when autumn came And still I dream he'll come to me That we will live the years together But there are dreams that cannot be And there are storms we cannot weather I had a dream my life would be So different from this hell I'm living So different now from what it seemed Now life has killed the dream I dreamed
I saw it last night with my dad and my friend. I sobbed through the entire second half, the car ride home, and about forty minutes after I got home. The ending was so beautifully heartbreaking....
A song I relate to very much. One of the most beautiful and meaningful songs I have ever heard. It is such an inspiring song in these days of uncertainty when a person cannot control his destiny as he once could.
Im in year 7 and the girl who sings this part is older and all I want is to get my teachers attention for one second I im trying to learn this of by heart and I have alredy learned at the end of the day of by heart
Honestly, Fantine, you shouldn’t be dreaming of him coming back to marry you. You should be dreaming of him coming back and you smacking him around the head for using you and leaving you alone with a baby!
I remember singing this for a college talent show and I bombed it. I was only 22 years old at the time and I didn't know a damn thing about this character's pain. Now (30 years later) i'm 52 and though I don't have the pipes I had at 22, I know exactly the pain of this character. Isn't that ironic?
Anyone who has suffered for love or for any other reason in which life has not been benevolent should listen to this song. He will realize that he is not the only one to suffer, but that in the world there are many who deserve that the dream should come true, at least once.
In terms of transportation - and being transported we can compare singers to cars. Some are safe rides and some are not. Still the crazy drivers who scare us can be stronger in performance than a flawless SUV. This is why improvisation can beat wellrehearsed acts carried out with academic precision.
I have had my dream stolen away as a young teenager, but now that I am older, I have regained a new dream and set new goals for my life! Such an exciting time in my life!
to the ppl that haven’t seen Les Mis, this song will be 1000x sadder I love this song and listened to it before watching Les Mis, and the story behind it is heartbreaking
I love singing to musicals but this is the only song I can't get past without crying. I've seen the play and they were fine, but when I read the book, it was so hard. Oh, poor Fantine deserve so much better.
I love this song! Thank you for posting the lyrics! When it seems one dream dies another dream is born...I can rise to dream yet again...one day will link my dreams together and I will see my life the magnificent dream I dreamed become reality ♥
I really don't think I've ever heard a rendition of this song I didn't like. The music and lyrics are just so iconic and beautiful, and I've loved every interpretation I've heard.
Such a beautiful song of life's struggles and why dreams are so important. "But in the end, there are dreams that cannot be and storms we cannot weather". I love this song! I don't like no it when some artist abbreviate it.
I dreamed a dream I could sing like this...but that was gone when I tried. :)
Lol you're not alone.

Your comment just made me laugh despite the song being very sad....whyy... xD
I just tried it now and butchered it.
I have never watched Les Miserables yet I am obsessed with this song.
Scarlet LOL same!! And my name is Scarlett!!
I’m crying very badly when she says “now life has killed the dream I dreamed”
Spoiler: don't get attached....to a lot of characters....
And also Hugh jackman and Russell Crowe were wonderful.
I'll watch it with you and we can listen to Melanie Martinez lol
He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonders
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when Autumn came😯😢
My name is noor as well. Thank god u understand what she actually meant there.

This is by far my FAVORITE rendition of "I dreamed a dream."
Ya
Mine too.
I cry every time i hear it.
Teresa Mullooly right in the feels.
How do theatre actresses not cry when they sing emotional stuff like this? I would be in a state.
Too focused on the techniques they have to use to get the right sounds and emotions to come through.
Alot of them do
believe it or not but you gotta burn yourself out emotional and find the inner rage within
See the 2012 movie Anne Hathaway nails it

But the tigers come at night... with their voices soft as thunder...
Literally every thought I've ever had
The lyrics are just so moving... they make me cry.

And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid

As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame
