- Every shot from my round at the West Monmouthshire Club in Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire, on 9th May 2024.
A beautiful spring day with only a gentle breeze was a perfect way for me to introduce me to the great course at West Monmouthshire. Situated on the hills between Brynmawr and Ebbw Vale, the course uses the natural contours of the hillside superbly in creating a challenging, open course that is exposed to the elements but offers a great challenge to your golf game.
A gentle first two hole introduction gives way to the long uphill third that tests your lungs but the climb is well worth it as you begin to get the big views of the surrounding area that is visible on all the holes from there on. There are several standout holes, with the 14th (the highest tee in Great Britain) and 16th (a long par 3 with 100 foot drop) being my highlights.
I actually played really well and managed to get a few birdies today which helped my card immensely. The weather helped for sure, with only a light breeze and a pleasantly warm sun helping me round, but I can imagine when the wind picks up, the course would become a beast, especially any exposed holes into the wind.
It's also great value for money with green fees being really reasonable. It's certainly a course that I was really pleasantly surprised with. Looks can be deceptive as they say, and the course, although it can look very open and even a little bleak in places, it plays the total opposite and offers you a great challenging round of golf.
Don't forget to pop into the clubhouse afterwards to get your highest tee certificate after hitting your drive off the 1518 foot high 14th tee!

Good knock. I shall be up there monday for my first video of the season. The greens will be in good form by then. They never get too quick because of being exposed to the wind but certainly the 6th can bite you hard.

@@CeeegeT Having had the gear blown over again recently I vow to play when it's not windy. That's good for our scores 🤣🤣🤣 The par 3's are amazing up there. I don't know whether I like 16 or 17 best.
Good video, great views. Some very short par 5's with a very long par 3. What's your handicap sir?
Thank you! The short par 5's don't feel it as they are all uphill. Neither does the par 3 16th (with little wind). It's a great course though and I'm sure an absolute beast with stiff breezes or more.
I don't have an official handicap but like to think of it around 10 (ish!). If I break 80 I'm more than happy 😎

All graphics are done in Adobe After Effects. I'm a bit of an IT nerd so made them myself to fit what I wanted in the videos. It's then easy to plug them in to Adobe Premiere Pro for editing 📽
You have a bad habit of looking up straight after you strike your puts. I think you could shave a few more shots off by having a set routine on the greens. What do you think? Cheers
