I've watched a lot of your videos and they are all pretty good, but this was a paradigm shift. The key to consistency is via repeatability and I cannot think of a way to create better repeatability than this. This will solely be what I focus on for my short game via experimenting with set up changes and keeping swing the same.
Watched this about 10 times and i learn something new each time lol..... This time I learned that the upper body pivot/turn is the MAIN 'driver' of the action and the arms and wrists go along for the ride, which promotes a nice consistent shallow angle of approach into the ball. Such a great lesson!!
I’m jumping on the wagon. I watched this a few months ago and can confidently say that this video lowered my handicap 2-3 strokes. Watch it, implement, watch again, rinse and repeat. Thank you!!!!
Dude, this was so good. I've been spending so much time with the Dan Grieves 3 releases, and this is so much easier for the regular player to technically implement. Love it!
@@nickgiles1991 consistent conditions? it rains here plenty, and when it rains it's proper downpour. Not that north-west England drizzle. And our courses are cheap (most under 30 british quids) so you get cloggers duffing big pitch marks around the greens and not repairing them. For what it's worth, the 3 releases is still a technique I think is a necessity to learn. My point was that for someone just starting to focus on short game, this is an easier entry point, technically.
@@marbles8901 hey bro, yeah, i get it... anything that demysitifies the game is good - i had a recurrence of the shanks recently.... only pitch shots not irons... worked out that it is dan grieve advice to have loose arms in pitching... but longer pitches seem to stretch the arms out a bit with the weight of the swing... puts hosel in play... so now i am keeping trail arm tucked in to stop the arms stretching out.. seems to work!!... what a game
To be fair this was refreshing. It’s body driven but the arms and wrists are allowed to flow naturally. The outcome you require is primarily determined by your set up. It’s also the only short game lesson I’ve seen on you tube that didn’t mention “ use the bounce “
So good. If you watch Short Game Chef he touches on some of the basics of using the body rather than hands but this really hammers home the overall concept - change the easy variables, not the mid-swing ones! Genius
This is exactly how I do it after coming back from a 18 year hiatus. Before quitting golf I used different clubs with a putting style motion which was inconsistent. If only I could read greens.
Love the simplicity of this. However, do you have a video on difference lie types and how it fits in with this please? To my mind, a ball sat down in thick rough will need a different release pattern to that on a tight lie on the fairway. Thanks
Out if the rough you can put the ball back a little and have your weight a little left, open the club to suit. Hardpan same deal, ball back a little and don't use sandwedege because of the flange; you want to hit down a bit more.
Excellent video. Seems all these instructional videos have a student that is already a good player. Wish they’d get some 10 handicapper that uses way too much hinge and digs into the ground.
There is a significant amount of quality information here, and the principles behind the stock shot are the same principles I use for a standard pitch. However, this instruction is among thousands, which never answer the question that every player/student is sure to ask. Hands ahead, equal to, or behind the ball at impact for a standard pitch ? I have all 3 shots to one degree or another as most players do. And all 3 misses. None of those 3 ever really leave me in a place of peace in regards to the pitch. Any of the three present clear and present dangers. Imo, it is the reason why you see players with 45 years of experience, like me, who hit a wide variety of shots around the green. From those, the least frequent selection is the standard pitch. The summer of 1986, I was fresh out of High School Golf, preparing a walk on attempt to a Pac-10 school. With only 8 years bagroom experience, and 9 years playing experience, I managed to land a gig looping for the late great ChiChi Rodriguez. Chichi taught me to roll the ball around the greens via a number of shots which were new to my game. That wasn't a shot we learned growing up in the mountains of Oregon. I frequently use the ChiChi taught shots to this day. Crazy to think about. Smh. It's like, for a modern day equivalent in regards to accomplishments and player popularity, landing a gig on John Dalys bag ! He took a bit of a liking to me, helped me with my game and mindset, and maybe more than anything he treated me like I was a good player. I had always thought of myself as an average player. ChiChi thought that I was better than I thought that I was. In hindsight I ended up playing mini tours and section events and open qualifiers for most of my adult life. Now I like to think that he was right about my game's potential, more right than I was. Don't remember what we were talking about, but thanks for congering up the old memories. 😎✌️⛳️🏌♀️🙏🧑🌾
I was a volunteer at the Houston Open last week and almost every pro I watched used this method. How do you keep the ball from going right as you open the face? Do you lower the handle?
@@golfslump Great Video! This fits my swing thought much better. What is Grant's standard for the loft to use? Opening a 60° wedge can quickly get to 64° plus, which seems excessive. Using a 56-58° would give the most versatility for using one club.
Closed stance, mega flared left foot, ball slightly more toward the back foot, open or slightly close the club face depending on what shot you want to play and go. You can basically play any shot you want from here. Get off the couch, stop watching videos and start practicing, you will get better, just be prepared to get worse first. 😂 Took me around 25,000 balls over 3 months to get the FEEL and understand the golf swing, now 90 yards has become my bitch, 80 yards are terrified of me, 70 yards gets hit 8/10 times. 60 & 50 yards sometimes I own them, sometimes I’m left with a bad one which is 16ft from pin, 40-30-20-10 yards is a piece of cake and I play on cow fields, when I go to the range and get to hit off a mat, I’m tour standard.. 😂 I live in England so we don’t get to play off hard fairways, everything is heavy & wet under foot…. It’s gross. 🤮
Dropping the right foot back is a runners stance. Saw it a lot more decades ago. Why does Cam Smith not use it for the full swing? If he could improve his long clubs he would be hard to beat.

Great tip. IT just makes sense. I am looking forward to working on this.
Keeping the same swing… I love it! My brain is too small to change every time
This is the best short game tip ive ever had ,thanks .

Thanks for sharing this great video. Very consistent technique. Love it!
Just tried this on my indoor mat. Contact much more consistent and feels much more controlled! Thanks mate!
That’s great to hear man!!
Make necessary adjustments 'at set up' depending on shot requirements, low/high etc, then keep swing motion the same! Simple method, LOVE IT!
That’s right!!! Don’t change your swing but rather, change the loft and stance and speed throughout the shot!
Yes! and speed through body rotation, not arm/wrist speed as he was saying! Awesome man, awesome!@@golfslump
great video, my swing improved from these tips forsure
Added this to my training notebook. If you see me on the training area trying to be you, say gday. Great video.

@@golfslump yes sir!!
Great Lesson!
This is great information ❤
Check out the rust on that wedge 😮
This is awesome! When he is saying to add loft are you just opening up the face but then gripping it at that position?
Yeah so everything about the set up and swing stays the same except by just changing the loft and speed through the shot
Are you aiming more left when increasing club loft? Or should the ball stay on the same line?
Love it.. Works !!!
Excellent video!

Very interesting! Does this work also for a bunker shot?
Sorry if I missed this in the video, what club are you using for this lesson? Love your content!
I to learned from this information. Does this swing technique apply to full swing and driver?
I’m pretty sure Grant teaches this for every aspect of the golf swing so yes!
I think I had a eye opening moment 😂
How great was this?!!
great video ; did Grant say anything about ball postiion , or how to 'add loft ' at address ?
I think I need an Australian golf coach now
Do you reckon this same technique would work in soft/hard bunkers? I struggle with greenside shots!
Another enjoyable video!
What club were you using?
I was using a 60!
