- Quick video to show how a bad exhaust gasket can sound from behind the wheel. Clicking sounds like it could be tappets or injectors, but in this case it was definitely a bad gasket. Car: 1981 BMW E24 635 CSi
7 years later and this information is still great. I took off my oil pan to confirm my rebuild was solid after hearing a scary ticking noise. Noticed exhaust soot outside of the gasket on the down pipe when I took it off to remove the pan, and this video sounds a lot like the sound I have on my H22A4, gets a lot better after it’s warm. Thanks!

It's a pretty mundane video, but the sound drove me crazy for ages and I thought it was worth sharing for anyone else in the same situation. Thanks for the comment.
If it stops after being warmed up it could also be a turbo failing
Mine also stops after driving it hard for half an hour. Also there are sometimes misfire during cold starts as well as smell of gas when driving. Also the annoying ticking sound. Today Ive got under the car while it was cold. Put a wrench on the pan. Shit man I thought my bearings going bad or something but If it did it would be loauder. Also I think I felt some kind of breeze of mair near the cat and the pan. Im gonna check the manifold tomorrow. I feel like Ive finally found the problem. It was driving me nuts for the last 8 thousand kilometres. The car drives its all fine when warm . But its a mess when cold. Also there is a loss of power like it has a stroke under 2.5k rpms when colder and engine just starts warming up. Man so many of these problems seem to align with the symptoms.
It stops after warming up because as it heats up the metal expands and seals hairline cracks
it is annoying me so much that certain people can’t hear exhaust leaks and when I try to explain it they look at me like I’m crazy
it slowly eases into the sound over a long period of time so they just think it’s normal

Thank you. This is definitely the sound, and my car it's only really audible at around 1800 RPM give or take 100. I figured that was the manifold but this video definitely confirms it.

Sounds exactly like my Patrol. Got a call from the mechanic confirming this was the case. What a relief! I thought it was something much worse.

Feel the change in compression of the pipe on the floor board and especially the gas pedal when hammering down. It's like a spuddering.

My car makes the same noise but only when i pass 4500rpm but its abit louder.. im pretty sure its an exhaust leak because i can smell it when the car isnt moving (02 acura rsx 5 speed manual)
My 2006 Lexus IS250 does this. I can only hear it when the windows are down and im driving at a slow steady pace. It is a very faint ticking sound and the pace increases when I tap on the gas pedal to accelerate.
Probably an easy fix. it's just finding the leak and then patching it up with some JB weld in a lot of cases. You can find the leak by blowing air through the rear exhaust with a vacuum on reverse, and then put soapy water where you might expect to find leaks around the manifold and the areas the bubble, patch those
I was wondering about this myself, It must be the click of the fuel injectors we are hearing right? It was really bad for me then I cleaned them and they are sounding much quieter but still too loud.
Try playing sound from outside next time
I have a similar one, but with a small petrol car, and it always gives a knock sensor error after deletion(p0325). I changed the injectors, knock sensor, ecu wire, but no change.

Well my 04 Marquis sounds like this permanently now, too expensive for me to want to fix right now. Broken bolt caused the gasket to blow and it's close to a grand to fix. At least my intuition was correct lol
I have something like this except it's only when the engine is cold, once it warms up the clicking goes away my guess is the leak is small enough where once everything expands from the heat it closes the leak, I don't think it's a lifter, but if it is I have plans to put an aftermarket cam in and will replace all the timing/valvetrain parts with it as preventative maintenance

My car ticks something shocking and I was sure it was my injectors! This makes me rethink that cause my injectors are only 6 weeks old and I thought I might have gotten bad ones
Mine has that sound to!!! But only from like 2000-4000ish rpm's !!! Hope this is the problem
That annoying clicking sound correct? Thats what im hear from the right side of my cabin but not on idling only when driving on any gear above 2000rpms

My 99' Crown Vic LX makes that same noise lol. It happens under acceleration/ load. But, it dwindles down when cruising.
My Vic 04 LX doing the same i just don't want to spend money fixing it right now lol

@@a.kblur04 a leaking manifold gasket comes with ALOT of downfalls! Leaking exhaust fumes in your engine bay which then flood in through your air vents causing you to breathe the fumes in, decreased engine performance, higher fuel consumption and of course all the annoying sounds that comes with it ie the ticking
Omg bro! I hope this is wrong with my hemi ! It sounds exactly! exactly like this !!! It goes up with the rpm’s and I’ve taken such great care of my engine. It started ticking but I can barely hear anything on start up only when I’m driving

Same - 2007 Hummer H3. Two broken manifold bolts. Ticked just like a lifter.
I have this noise after 2-3 weeks of installing my test pipes on a 2014 audi a6 i thought it was my timing chain going out i will confirm in the next day or so if my pipes are loose or gasket is leaking from manifold to pipes
My pipes do rattle at certian RPMs so im guessing the rattling might have cause the nuts on the studs to get loose

Mine has similar leak sounds but I found 2 small holes on the catalytic converter 😂 that’s probably why I can smell exhaust fume when I turn the went on.
Does this noise happen when a valve gasket is bad too?
No; the gasket is usually compressed. You'll see oil leak out the valve cover before you hear anything.
Does the Engine Shake when you drive ?
How about when not accelerating Im trying to figure out if thats whats wrong with mine,I changed the cat and repaired a hole on the pipe but, I hear that sound like you got,Im hoping its nothing bigger,first it was only doing it when accelarating now it does simetimes without accelerating
I'd check the manifold for cracks and the gaskets for breaks.

The high pitched clicking sound is from the broken exhaust manifold gasket.

as2k3w you mean the intake manifold? Not exhaust. Or was it the exhaust manifold. I just had my head gasket replaced and now hear the same ticking but only when my window is down and the rpms are under load. It goes away at cruising speed. Can't hear it when the window is rolled up, so honestly I don't know for how long this has been happening. It was a nice day today, had the window down.

@@ejgracia7732 This is a BMW 635. Part of the gasket was blown out and was replaced.
Hold a small piece of paper near the manifold to see if there actually is a leak.

thats not manifold its damaged resonator or donut replacement
This was 100% blown manifold gasket on cylinder 6. I fitted the new one myself.
