I had totally forgotten what a stunning song this is and what a genius of a musician Mike Oldfield is..... Tubular Bells cannot be bettered as a completely solo piece of work.
Mike has always been one of greatest guitar genius of all time. Plus, he re-invented the guitar technique, mostly with his unique use of the right hand and a still mysterious coordination between both hands. I'm a solo guitar player and I can tell this for sure, since I accompany Mike's work since the very beggining, in the early 70's. But unfortunately most of the world "guitar community" - much more conventional 'rock' and jazz influenced - fails on recognizing him as one of the best... The same happens to the other guitar genius as Steve Hackett, Robert Fripp, David Gilmour, Edgar Froese (Tangerine Dream), etc.
This is sublime. Mike's playing is smooth, lyrical and other-worldly. And I'm stunned by the singer! That's Helen DeMacque from Pepsi & Shirley. I had no idea she had worked with Mike Olfield. What a voice!
Amazing performance with an absolute solid band, such a beautifull song with deep timeless lyrics cant het enough of it ! 😃😃😃thanks for sharing. Greetings and much love and light from the Netherlands everyone ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

@@pleun315 i can tell you know next to nothing about playing guitar, sultans of swing is in no way a copy of highway star, sure ritchie blackmore is a great guitar player, but calling mark knopfler a student is a very large understatement. Oldfield is clearly something of a guitar geek. Did anyone else pick up on the fact that he switches guitar in the middle of the song from a red Fender Strat (at 1:51) to a sunburst hollowbody PRS for the guitar solo (at 2:11) ? This is not a criticism but to me this just enhances how wonderful he is as a guitarist and musician.
You don't see that often - the only other time I've seen this was Queen at Live Aid. Brian May uses three different guitars on Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Isn't this more to do with losing a string or an other issue? Unless you've written it into the set while your faffing around swapping out there's gaps in output and it sounds bad.
@@craigmurphy1204 Really ? Must re-listen with the headphones - Ok just did - the sound of the Strat does disappear at 1:54 (you can hear Oldfield finger picking just before) but this could have more than one explanation. He could have broken a string or he could just have turned the volume pot down before switching to the PRS. The later has such a sweet tone (and, believe or not, costs 5x more than the Fender) that I think this switch was scripted....
Love the solo (in two parts) and this version of the song, and how Pepsi delivers it. Its entirely possible to like the original and this one. As for Oldfield's playing - he's written more impressive solos, but this one is perfect for this song, which isn't really a big guitar piece by his standards.
