Superb video - thank you for bringing out what is such an exceptional song. Huge favor, can you build on Mike’s guitar solo that he does at concert (varies by concert) but those solos take the biscuit. Would really appreciate it. Thank you!
Definitely most underrated. Although not under-appreciated, because his fans cherish him; but he should have a far more prominent place in the _guitar scene_ nowadays
Mike Oldfield is a greatly underestimated musician. I have been to see him on several occasions in the UK and Europe. I'm 68 this year and have been listening to him since 1973. Moonlight shadow is a great hit.
Mike Oldfield is the best musician of the twentieth century. Incredible genius and multi-instrumentalist. For me the best guitarist ever. Great melodies, sonorous instruments combined with such beautiful Celtic music. Mike Oldfield's music is not primitive rock n roll music to drink beer and sing along to in any bar. His music is very intelligent and considered music creation on a completely different level. Like Franz Schubert, Johann Sebastian Bach or Bethoven. I'm a musician myself and a big fan of Mike Oldfield.
I looked up the bassist, and learnt that Phil Spalding only passed away recently, in February 2023. He reportedly also played bass on the legendary Right Said Fred track "I'm Too Sexy".
Mike was my first love in music. 'Tubular Bells', 'Hergest Ridge' and - especially - 'Ommadawn'. I have enjoyed his forays into pop, too: this song, 'Heaven's Open', 'Portsmouth', 'To France', 'In Dulci Jubilo', etc. I love his cover of 'Sailing', too!
This song will always play a big part of my life as it was playing on the radio as my wife was giving birth to our first son, it’s safe to say it’ll stay with me forever
There’s a version Live in VH 1 Studio where Mike Oldfield plays with his fingers. He is an exceptional guitarist then you have to remember he can play about 50 different instruments what an absolute genius
@@Tbhsixty5 A friend of mine lived in the same place Oldfield composed Tubular Bells in when he was 16/17. His bedroom was in the loft, and he rarely came out for a number of months while he worked on the sections that he would eventually put on a demo tape. His dinner would be brought to his door. I listened to that album over and over as a kid.
That solo is one of the best i know because it bring back so many fond memories, waking up as a kid on a nice summer day to my father blasting Mike Oldfield....Ah those were the good old days. That solo and those memories still warm my heart :)
Mike Oldfield is the vehicle that music has to manifest itself. In fact, he has been able to create any style of music and play any instrument he could think of. No one has played the guitar like him, but because he has been considered more of a multi-instrumentalist than a guitarist he has not been appreciated as he deserves in this respect.
The Bass player died some weeks ago. He was such a nice person. Always funny and in a good mood. What a loss. Miss his daily posts in Facebook terrible
beautiful music from Mike Olfield and maggie reilly. I've been inspired all my life of the way how Mike plays the guitar. But that scarry bass player Phill spalding was a incredible tallent bass player, he used drugs and in that time who dind't, but he played with alot of famous artists like Seal, Mick Jagger, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Elton John, Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue and alot of other musicians. And Phil Spalding also recorded all bass tracks on The Lion King soundtrack studio album. I had the privilege to have him as a good face book friend but last year February 5th he passed away caused by hepatitis unfortunately, he realy was a good guy and will be missed by many
These can you play episodes are great, such an original take on a very popular type of series. Your style of breaking them down and teaching is unique and ill be stocking around to learn more :)
What a lovely song... the intro but offcourse that two part guitar solo is awesome (edit: so beautiful!) But all in all it is the total package, her vocals, the composition, the lyrics.. I Remember in my childhood I used to keep the radio on at night and one night waking up to the sound of this great song.. Can't really recall whether it was actually four AM in the morning, I didn't yet have a notion of the lyrics then
Sadly Phil Spalding left us earlier this year. I had the pleasure of seeing him with Mike play this live at Wembley in 1983. I have been able to play a lot of Mike's riffs, including Ommadawn but Moonlight Shadow seems to be my blind spot as I just can't get that solo. It's the strings bend that gets me.
Beautiful Tones and Notes. Somewhat Mark Knofler-esque. Always good to hear a MK vibe. Brings me back to the first time I heard SOS; one of those “I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard that” moments
I heard this track randomly on the radio in my car a couple of months ago and remembered how much I liked it, especially how clean and sweet the guitar solo was. Thanks for this one Pilgrim!👍
Mike Oldfield is by far my favorite musician, since 1987, when I first heard a song by him (Shine, with Jon Anderson). What's crazy is that many years later, my younger son ended up being in the same class with his son Jake, even going to his house for a birthday party. And Mike being Mike, was ocassionaly picking his son from school on his motorbike, despite the teachers' concerns about safety :)
Beautiful video. This song came out when startet learning the electric guitar. And this was one of the first solo parts my guitar teacher has taught me back then. Lately when I was noodling during TV Comercial break the beginning came back in mind. What a great and melodic piece that solo is❤
Lol the bass player was Phil Spalding... he was bonkers and yes around that time he had help with substances to make him so. I met him at a Mike Oldfield convention in 2013 and he was one of the nicest down to earth guys I've ever spoke to. I was friends with him since then on Facebook and had a few chats. He sadly passed away a couple of months back.
Thanks so much for this video. I always have wanted to play the solo of "Moonlight Shadows". Its one of my favourite guitar solos ever and I hope, within the next few days I will have mastered it. Btw, the part that reiminds you of "Jumping Jack Flash" is a technique from Spanish Guitar called Rasqueado, where you let the fingers of the right hand slide over the strings one after another. Mike Oldfield plays Spanish Guitar quite frequently on his albums.
man you are SOOOOO great ... this was what i was searching for a long time. someone who could explain ... the why !!! keep it up my friend !!! i am a follower of you 🙂
Interesting to note how similar Oldfield’s and Knopfler’s techniques and sounds are, lots of solos based around chord shapes. Oldfield also looks worryingly like the T1000 terminator in the second movie of that name!
Due to the similar chord structure, there is even a clip where the soloist adapts the solo from the Sultans of Swing to Moonlight Shadow (alas with little success): ruclips.net/video/WoxLCZB8g70/видео.html
They do have similarities. I think one thing that makes Mike sound different is his violin vibrato - the Tubular Bells live in Montreaux performance shows it off beautifully.
The first few notes of the intro triggers the intro to Friday I'm In Love in my brain. Theey are not the same, but it happens every time I try to play this.
It's a shame in this vid they were miming, mike's axe is not plugged in... But yes a genius musician... Great video great skill.... Have a great day everyone 👍
Aren't there double strokes at the start of the melody, or is it just my brain doing tricks one me ? 😊 Been listening to that track a million time since I heard it first in 1983.... hehehe I am old! Btw... I think Mike was having a love affiar with Maggie, and maybe the bass player had the hots for her at the time, and let his feelings out on the video? ❤😁 Another thing is Mike usually use his strong fingers for the vibrato, but in this video, you can see him using the Stratocaster vibrator quite a bit. I like songs with inventive solos that go beyond the meldy of the song itself. I like the song by Limahl "Neverending Story", because you can easily do the keyboard part and transition to the guitar part. Very satisfying as a guitar player, because you have to have fun learning the instrument, There is a Danish band from the 1980s who had a cute song called "Ridder Lykke" which had a solo section by the keyboardist, but you can learn it on the guitar, and it is a good piece to learn if you are a beginner guitarist! 😊
There is also an extended version of MS with a very beautiful alternative or parallel pre-intro (twice!), which hints of what is coming 😊 And one where they keep repeating this theme 6 times or so, which is too much 🙄
To my ear(that means nothing) Oldfield sounds like someone who meticulously composes his guitar rather than just compiling a few take of improvisations.
Although many people think it is about John Lennon's murder, I havbe always felt it was about the loss of his omther and younger brother and her barbituate addiction. THe comment full of joy , eh? Fun fact - the drums were reused in the song "man in the rain"
Hank Marvin was a master of muting the melody line on the higher strings... Just listen to early Shadows tunes. The solo has a a Mark Knopfler vibe to it....and yes the bass player looks like a serial killer.
