Could you use a few straps to re-create a door curvature that matches the barrel, and then weld in a few rods/bars as struts on the underside of the door to hold the correct shape?
Chud! You need to make plans and sell them to build offset smokers! For us outside the US its impossible to buy a Chud pit and there's nothing comparable in Canada or almost. I'd be your first customer!
🤠Hey Brad, I'm sure you get this all the time. Take a look at getting a quality plasma cutter (maybe reach out to some brands to sponsor one?) Its gonna save you so much time and cut off wheels getting through those doors! 😎 ☁Happy Smokin☁
X2 on a plasma cutter. Sounds like with the amount of smokers you build you would pay off the plasma cutter, make life easier and it will do a cleaner job.
I watched a video where a guy cut the barrel lengthwise to release the "spring" in the cylinder. Then he welded in a 2" or so wide flat piece to fill in the gap. That flat piece became the bottom. Then when he cut the doors out like you did, no deformation occurred. I've never done it, but just something to check out. Great video and thanks for the content!
Wow, must say there are great improvements in your work and your welding since you started out, really love this smoker you are making :) Enjoy all the content you are making.
Fabricator tip: use the grinder the other way when possible. sparks towards you. when the grinder decides to catch, it will go away form you vs coming toward you Nice Work
Maybe take a bigger pipe and slot into the round stock you're bending so you dont need to worry about heat into the gloves? That's what I tend to do when bending metal like that, it really helps. Looks like maybe a long 1/2" socket extension would fit.
@@Spatchcock2 I'm not a big fan of tuning plates, and the idea that the cooking grate does not have cooler areas (as with a traditional offset smoker) kinda makes it a bit more tricky to smoke different meats at the same time.
I am really enjoying the build series. Cannot wait to see that thing in use. I have a 36 and a 60 Lang reverse flow smoker. I've experimented with many smokers and I find the reverse flows seem to produce a more consistent product. But that is probably more of a issue with the user then the smoker. Keep it up Brad.
48D owner here. Love the Lang but one thing I don’t like is the firebox is too small to burn full splits. Chuds box looks big enough to burn splits without having to reduce their length. He also has a MONSTER exhaust stack on this thing! Very curious to see how it drafts.
Love it!! I started a 150gal traditional build a couple years ago. I stopped when I was shell shocked by the cost of outsourcing the firebox. Watching you build this is resparking my interest. I can almost smell the hot metal😂
With all of the plasma tables out there today you could probably find someone that can cut it out for you to weld together for a reasonable price. If you have a metal supermarkets near you they may be able to do it as a lot of those stores have a plasma table. I am a share holder in 2 of my local ones, if you can't get it done locally we may be able to cut it and ship the pieces to you.
Thx for showing how you heat and bend the round bar with your handheld torch. I don't have an oxy/acetylene torch set. I'm stuck cold bending round bar. I didn't think my handheld torch would have enough heat, but you proved other wise. Thanks for the show and tell. rocket.
I have a reverse flow smoker in central Austin. I am liking the design of this one, it solves one of my basic gripes in that it gets hot at both ends of the smoker. I am also liking the v design of the firebox that is a great idea for the square firebox, I have been looking for a way to fix that. @chuds please let me know if we can rehab my pit😊
My college I am working at should pay you a royalty because you really make me want to enroll into their Welding courses... This series is really great! Good stuff!
Loving your video's. Only been watching for a few days but I will catch up to all of them. I am working on my first propain grill built to sell to a friend. I have invested so much money into this build equipment, I can not event think about building just one grill. Hope I enjoy the process like you seem too. We only work on the side line stuff on the weekends so we should be finished with our first grill next weekend possibly the next.
So many useful tips to help someone like me to build my own smoker. So timely for me. Thanks so much for this series! And then, to top it off, you made some beef ribs! Awesome!!!
Love the series! I see all the comments saying plasma cutter. My opinion, (I know, I know!) I would use my Evolution metal cutting circular saw. Clean cuts, easy to keep straight, and you wouldn't need dozens of cutting discs.
Idk if it will help, but my dad and I used to use the grinder to do the corners and then use a reciprocating saw to do the straight edges of the doors.
Thank you for this series as I am going to start a 250 gal. tank and 100 gal. fire box smoker build in about a month after I lay the flooring in my brothers house ahem 9000 sq. ft. worth. But I will for sure send some photos to show you the progress. You are inspiring.
Brad, i recommend the metal disk based diamond edge metal cutting disks. After having a few of the fiber ones explode and the dust they make. Give it a go. Love me some pit action
Loving the build series! I started building a hybrid direct heat cooker and offset this winter, nearly done! I’m curious how much welding wire you normally go through on a build?
Have you thought about using a plasma cutter to cut your doors? Or would it not be as clean of a line? But if you use the flat bar to cover it would it matter?
Lookin' good! I like your technique for welding the curved pieces of flat bar; a better end product, despite the bit of excess material that goes in the scrap pile.
Nice work! Look forward to seeing what you think of its performance. I'm really happy with the RF I built with an 80 gallon air compressor tank, but I've never cooked on an offset to make a comparison. Also have a small window to use it during our short Alaskan summers. If you find yourself with some cash burning a hole in your pocket, a plasma cutter will change your life!
I'd invest in a little oscillating multi tool. I bought a Fein way back when they came out for far too much money. As a carpenter, I don't need it all the time, but when I do, it's indispensable. Would have knocked that cut you did with the hacksaw blade out, without burning precious calories. Cheers, thanks for the video.
Hey chud, good shit ma boi , quick tip the way you use the angle grinder… if it catches it’ll pull itself towards you, I learnt to cut with them blowing the sparks toward me so if it binds and catches it’ll at least go the other way, love your sh keep it up Edit: and for dang sakes invest in a rose bud and oxy acetylene torch!!
you can fix the issue with your doors by heating with an oxy-acetylene torch, you run a horizontal row of heat, to red/yellow depending, and it'll cool and "warp" so you can control the warping to realign the door with the tank. This is common among metal workers who have a large plate that deforms with some welds, if you consider that welds dump a LOT of heat into a small spot of the metal, cumulatively they create "tension" in the grain of the metal by pulling on it where they cooled and contracted. If you don't have a torch, you could try welding to deform and grind off your welds too. Not sure how effective the second suggestion would be.
Try cutting your corners then the sides weld your flat stock to the sides before cutting the top and bottom. The flat stock should help keep your curves
I almost built my own , but I found workhorse pits , and for what they would sell, and ship me an offset for , I thought it was money well spent ,because of the time it would take me to build one, but the wait list is killer, ordered at the end of February ,and they told me an estimate of October to start with, they say they will probably beat that date but wow.
What goes into your decision on one or two doors? I've seen your videos where your 115 Chudpit has one door and this one has two. It looks a little bigger, but not much.
I've worked in heavy industry most of my life and have seen some horrendous injuries when people don't use PPE. Remember what your Mama always said, it's all fun and games till someone loses an eye.
To avoid the doors warping grind until you get to about an inch from each corner and stop. Let the metal cool down completely then after finish off the corners.

Love your use of the safety squints and the look away while cutting techniques 😂
Chud Squint
*Fun fact: This video is OSHA approved, and endorsed.
Ave approved.

Man you are a great builder on your pits . I've never built a fire box with the V shape on the inside the box
Really loving this series, hope they gain some traction on the channel and we can get more content like this. Keep killin it guys!
I could see a chain and pulley setup added on with a counter weight to help control the opening/closing of the hatches. cool rig
My kinda Renaissance Man. Love your work.

As somebody who has had this happen and been hit in the face with a running grinder I approve this message.
It's coming out really nice Bradley. If I had the money I'd buy one from you.

Invest in a plasma cutter would cut time in half! Or in a third.
Loving this series mate 🤝
I am not a fan of the reverse flow smokers, but with Chud doing this I am totally interested to see how it turns out and his take on how it cooks.
Why not? Just curious.
@@Spatchcock2 I'm not a big fan of tuning plates, and the idea that the cooking grate does not have cooler areas (as with a traditional offset smoker) kinda makes it a bit more tricky to smoke different meats at the same time.
@@NorthernThaiGardenGuy you don’t need tuning plates. In reverse flow it’s just one solid plate
@@colemeachem4869 That's even worse.
Also very pleased to know im not the only american that welds, forges and fabricates while wearing flip flops.
Loving this series
If you use a soapstone to mark metal, it doesnt burn.
Please make a playlist. I love that you show how you making it
A true man. No need for safety glasses just look away when cutting lol Love it!
Brad!....The oxy/ace torch is tailor made for cutting those.doors

Sweet build! Good god do you need a plasma cutter! Those are long cuts to do with an angle grinder, but I love your approach!
I adda picture frame trim around my doors as I'm cutting them out. Do a side at a time, haven't had a door spring out of shape in a while
Beautiful work! Obviously you have been around the welding block a few times and it shows!
I bet the T-edge of a speed square would fit into the grooves you cut to help you quickly align your hinges with the doors.

Bradley makes things radley.
You can ratchet strap the doors and beat the inside with a sledgehammer to reshape doors to match the tank radius. Just did it on an offset build.

“I don’t know what pilates are.” 😂. I want that on a Chud shirt. Nice work dude, lookin’ good to me!
Love my reverse flow in the right cook. Doesn’t draft as much as my offset, but doesn’t dry out the meat nearly as easy either.

Weld a flat bar inside the door on each side before you cut it completely so it keeps the same round shape.
