I love all the little features that large grill manufacturers don't think about. The notch system for the firebox door (although you might want to cut the sharp point off of that thing), the little pegs to hold a water pan, the grill on top of the firebox, the extended handle for the stack, etc. You can tell just by looking at it that a true long-time enthusiast took pride in designing it.
thought the same thing re " (although you might want to cut the sharp point off of that thing) " then at 7:25 I thought " Laceration time!" as he picks up the box and nearly drives the pike deep into his bicep.
Great video! A couple things you might want to do is cut the sharp point off the adjustable firebox system. Something I was told when I started welding many years ago no sharp corners round them off. It saves blood, Doctors bills, time off work. Also convert from flux core wire to gas it doesn't take much. The savings on grinding disk will pay for the conversion. Maybe a clean out door on the bottom of the fire box to aid in cleaning out the ashes.
This was a joy to watch! Great ideas. I've got a 250 gallon old fuel tank and a 75 gallon round tank. You gave me the perfect setup and ideas. THANK YOU FOR THIS VID!!!!
That's a damn good idea with the V shape in the firebox I like that a lot. you could actually put some grading across the bottom and it'll give it air flow when the logs breakdown in fall to the bottom.
Your husband is likely going to say this guy needs to wear some sleeves if he doesn't want skin cancer. Agreed that it's a cool project though. I'd personally fully insulate the firebox so you have to burn less wood and keep the temperatures more stable.
@@BitsOfInterest there are pros and cons to San insulated fire box. Insulated fire box won’t produce as much smoker and tends to run hotter. Insulated will definitely help out in cold environments.
@@kirkchatwin6160 He's not wrong. If you want steel shipped to you, you're going to pay an arm and a leg. You are pretty much bound to whatever your local steel yard offers in pricing. Figure out what lengths/pieces you need and call your local steel yards to get a quote.
Nice job on this video and your smoker build. This is the best condensed timeline video of how these things can be built that I've seen yet. Kudos to you man!
I would like to see a video on what the pros and cons are on the pipe style smoker and the tank style smoker. Looking at building my own larger patio style smoker for the home and have been considering a 250 gallon tank style but would love to see a true comparison. Thanks! And keep up with the great videos. One of my favorite bbq channels all together and definitely my favorite “newer channel” by far!

Great construction! 6:46 Great leg killer too!! Thanks for sharing to us!
Thank you very much for inspiring me to have a go and make my own bbq. New to welding and keep coming back to this video. Thank you again man. Much love from Australia.
This was an amazing video. Question on the charcoal grill though. Since ash traps moisture and therefore you need to remove the ash the day after a cook on the charcoal grill...are you more/less forced to use a shop vac to clean the ash?
Fantastic build my friend. You've got some skills. I love building smokers and grills. I built a 48x24 octagon offset smoker a few years ago and I love cooking on it. I never did paint it so now it has a light coating of rust on it and I've been thinking about wire brushing it and seasoning it like you did. I really like your video and your personality so I think I'll subscribe to your channel. Have a great New Year.
Wow you be gotten talent!! I built your brisket recipe (foil boat) today and it was awesome. Now I come to find that you have fabricator skills. I love dis stick burner!!
That's about the coolest video I have ever seen. I'm not joking. If you knew my Brothers and I, you would know I'm being sincere. There is nothing better than a bad-a$$ smoker/grill, and watching you build one was a thrill. I'm a new subscriber now.
I’ve got a great idea. On top of the fire box you weld a piece of round tubing, then make the top portion of the tortilla press but with a rod that comes out of the back and turns and fits into the tubing to act as a hinge. Then you could use that flat top as a tortilla press when you want or take it out when you want to use it for charcoal. It’d be a cool accessory.
Love your Smoker build! Wondering how you determine how large/high/low you put the firebox and the cutout onto the pit itself? Is it a standard measurement or different by the size of the cooker? Do you ever add a damper to kill the fire when you are finished cooking,?
Recently purchased a BGE and discovered this channel while looking for recipes. Absolutely love it, and just ordered a T-shirt to prove it. Keep the content coming!
Amazing content. After watching the entire video I feel like I can build my own smoker too! You make it look easy. Time to get meself a welding machine.
Dear lord tiny baby Jesus, I'm so damn happy that you're in Austin Texas! That smoker is the shiznit and I want one. I'd feel much better, you making it than me. I'm worried all my welds would just pop right off.. hehe. Cash buyer! :)
I use an old towel and soak it in some sunflower oil or grape seed oil and wipe my smoker down inside and out before each use. Has a great shine to it , no rust and looks/works great.
Love this video but man that firebox door latch catch scares me. I can't imagine the amount of blood when some drunk idiot falls into that sharp point.

Even though I’m not an offset smoker guy I’ve been wanting to build my own for several years and try it. I have the exact welder too! My issue is still the money for the materials but mostly finding the materials. More specifically something for the main body.
Watching this makes me feel like I picked a lofty first project. I'm working on my... 250gal tank style. Also the cook top on my fire box is 1/2" thick, I hope that doesn't warp
You should try a build that’s a pellet smoker but built like an offset, like the heat source comes from the side instead of from underneath. Maybe a hybrid with a fire box on one side and pellet box on the other.
Grab yourself a cheap plasma cutter even just for the chimney cut-outs Brad - more easiers, mo betta. I built a small 20 gallon charcoal burner so I can make my own charcoal for barbeque - the flavour is totally different than the bought stuff - everyone notices the "best flavour" a pure natural hardwood coal imparts.
This was super impressive. Love seeing craftsmanship. Had no idea you could weld! You could honestly make a little business selling hand built smokers for your subscribers. I’m sure you could get some good business for some of your down time
The fact you did this with a flux core welder is blowing my mind. Granted you have a nice model, but you have some TALENT! Oh and what an eye for design! I have a smoker in my garage that I chopped up with the vision of it looking like this. About to toss on my shop clothes and get that sucker finished!
So, with a little more steel, you could, purely for fun, of course, make a micro-Chud box on your firebox. Creating the world's first offset/hill country combo grill ever!!!
I'd love to hear the difference between pipe vs tank smokers. Never seen it covered on a video before.
He ever do a video with this comparison?
@@Frank6289 not that I've seen
On his q and a he kind of goes over the difference between the 2 its not a full on comparison but touches on it briefly
Ok pipe is round sides a flat steel . Tank a little heavyer .pro pain. Thats about it .
